Margaret M. Brotzman
The funeral for Margaret M. Brotzman was May 21 at the Baptist Church in Houston, the Rev. Donald Range officiated. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Brotzman, 82, of Winona, formerly of Rushford, died Monday (May 17, 2004) at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
Margaret M. Bleisner was born March 21, 1922, in Arcadia, Wis., where she grew up and attended school. She and her husband, Basil Brotzman, lived in Mondovi, Wis., Durand, Wis., and Arcadia before moving to Rushford in 1957. Mrs. Brotzman was a member of the Houston Baptist church and the Rushford VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include one son, Richard (Lonnie) of St. George, Kan.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, a brother and four sisters.

Lillian R. Rasmuson
Lillian R. Rasmuson died Wednesday (May 12, 2004).
She was born in Rushford on Sept. 4, 1922, to Roy and Ruby (Lampman) Otis. She graduated from Rushford High School in 1940.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Orley; son, James (Sue), Kenneth (Nancy) and Glenn (Odette); six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Heublein; and two brothers, James Otis and Byron (Elsie) Otis; a sister-in-law, Eva Bakken (Mel).
She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Garness.
Funeral services were May 17 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Pastor Barbara Rasmussen officiated.
Interment as at Arlington Park Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Harold ‘Bud’ John O’Donnell
Harold “Bud” John O’Donnell, 79, of Rushford, died Tuesday, (May 4, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, following a seven month battle with cancer.
He was born to John and Mary (Saunders) O’Donnell on April 17, 1925, on Vinegar Hill, Houston County, Minn. Bud attended Vinegar Hill Country School, District 89. He married Dorothy Kryzer on April 24, 1951, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford.
Mr. O’Donnell had a variety of careers throughout his life including farming, mechanic, logging, truck driver, road construction and owner and operator of Bud’s Coffee Shop. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, The Rushford Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and the Hardwood Country Sportsman Club. He enjoyed trapping, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. Bud especially enjoyed socializing with his friends at Stumpy’s.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy; two sons: Jack (Jill) O’Donnell and Jim O’Donnell, both of Rushford; Seven daughters: Kathy Zacher, Pat (Ken) Georgens, Nancy (Robin Rislove) O’Donnell, all of Rushford, Teresa (Dave) O’Donnell - Ebner of LaCrescent, Mary Neyers of Minnesota City, Joan (Tom) Kauphusman of Winona and Christi (Tim Brand) O’Donnell of Dakota; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Rose Mary Randall of Houston; and one niece, Rose Ann Laumb of Rushford.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one niece, Mary Lou Duffy.
There was a Memorial Mass on May 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford, the Rev. William Kulas officiated.

William A. Schreiber
William A. Schreiber, 69, died Friday (May 14, 2004) at Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 27, 1935, in Winona to Adolph A. and Modesta (Rozek) Schreiber. He was a graduate of Cotter High School. He served in the U.S. Army and later farmed with his brothers, Bernard and John, in the Hart area. Mr. Schreiber was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish, a board member of Tri-State Breeders Association, a member of the Wilson Creamery and the Winona County DHIA.
Mr. Schreiber is survived by two brothers, John “Jack” of Winona and Bernard of Rushford; his sister, Joan (James) Vondrasek of Winona; nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Sylvester Mullen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
A memorial Mass was held May 18 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, the Rev. Eugene Klein officiated.
Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Archie Anderson
Archie M. Anderson was born May 5, 1926, in Rushford to Sam and Julia Sauro Anderson.
He attended public schools in Rushford. Following high school, Mr. Anderson moved to California.
On Mar. 6, 1948, he and Helen Hougher were married in Las Vegas, Nev. Following their marriage, they moved back to Minnesota, finally settling in the Twin Cities area.
In Minnesota he worked in the concrete business as a truck driver. He was a member of Teamsters’ Local #221 and Eagles Aerie #34, located in Minneapolis.
He passed away at the age of 77 on May 4, 2004, at the Minnesota Masonic Home with his family present.
Services were held Sat., May 8, 2004, at the Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, the Rev. Harry Mueller officiated. Interment took place at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a son, Dennis and brother, Gynther.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Kathie L. Anderson, Doug (Teresa), Ron (Barb), Bob (Sherry), Marian (Tim) Stolberg, Dick (Vickie) and Jeff; daughter-in-law, Karen Anderson; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Kinneberg and Mildred Buross; sister-in-law, Gerry Anderson and by many nieces and nephews and friends.

Karen Ann Hansen
Karen Ann Hansen, 55, of rural Rushford died Saturday (May 8, 2004) as the result of a car accident near Eyota, Minn.
Karen Ann (Francis) Hansen was born on Sept. 19, 1948, at St. James, Minnesota to Owen and Alma Francis. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural St. James. She graduated from St. James High School in 1966, and was active in 4-H, High School Band and City Band during her youth. She attended Mankato State University. After her education, she held various positions with Trimont Cooperative, Watonwan County Farm Bureau at St. James. During this time she was active in the Watonwan County Republican Party.
On Sept. 17, 1983, Karen Married Eugene Hansen and moved to rural Rushford. During the early years of their marriage, Karen was a homemaker, and gave birth and cared for their two children, Nathan (age18) and Michelle (age 16). After several years she took a position with Peterbilt of Winona, and most recently was employed with Winona Agency. During these years at Rushford, Karen was a member of the Lewiston-Altura School Board, active in the local Farm Bureau organization, a 4-H mother/leader, part of the Echo Ridge homemakers group, the Minnesota State A.S.C.S committee from 1988-1992. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining and being around people. Karen’s greatest joy has been attending and supporting her two children in their school and extra-curricular activities.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene; two children: Nathan and Michelle; mother, Alma Francis of St. James, Minn.; one sister, Marci (Gene) Sanford of Faribault, Minn.; one brother, Mike Francis of St. James; two cousins: Joann (Darryl) Jensen of St. James and Val (Terry) Drommerhausen of New Prague; mother-in-law, Billie Hansen of Rushford; and two sisters-in-law: Kathy Hansen of Great Falls, Montana, and Karen Hansen of Minneapolis, and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wilson with the Rev. Paul Stratman officiating. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Gertrude Hanson
Gertrude M. Hanson, 83 died Sat. (May 8, 2004) at Winona Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
Gertrude M. Hanson was born Aug. 28, 1920 to Hans O. and Gertrude (Kjelland) Hanson in Rushford.
After graduating from Rushford High School, she served in the Marine Corps. during WWII. She later graduated from University of Minnesota with a Bachelors degree and was a member of the synchronized swim team. She later received a Bachelors degree from Winona State and her Masters degree from West Kentucky University.
She was a librarian at Texas Lutheran College for 16 years and organized Elderhostle retreats. After her retirement, she returned to Rushford and was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church. She was active in many church and community activities.
She is survived by a niece Katharine Hanson and a great niece of La Crosse, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one nephew.
Funeral Services were May 12 at Rushford Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Rushford Lutheran Church Cemetery on a later date. Hoff Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements.

Samuel Glen Williams Jr.
Samuel Glen Williams Jr., 69, of Money Creek died Wednesday (April 28, 2004) at his home.
Mr. Williams was born on June 2, 1934, to Glen and Hester Williams in Wayne County, Iowa. He grew up in Promise City, Iowa. On September 6, 1953, he married Janet Bonnett of Chariton, Iowa. To this union two sons were born.
After graduating from Corydon High School, he began his life-long career in the telephone industry along with some continuing higher education. Beginning with Northwestern Bell of Iowa in 1952, he then served two years in the U.S. Army. He spent three years with Iowa State Telephone before moving to North West Telephone of Tomah, Wis. From there he moved into management and became General Manager of Cencom, Inc. based in Rushford. This was a holding company with many locations and he served Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada and Alaska companies. Mr. Willians left Cencom in 1978, he spent the rest of his career with Contel of Iowa and Contel of Arkansas. His career spanned 43 years plus five years part-time for Marion Enterprises of Marion, Iowa, covering many aspects of the telephone business. He loved his work and never asked what will I be doing, but rather, when do you want me there?
He was a member of Jaycees and Lions in several places, a member, worker and Sunday School Teacher in the Methodist Church. Upon retiring back to Minnesota in 1995, he joined the Presbyterian Church in Rushford.
Survivors include his wife Janet; son Bradley James (Lorraine) of Houston and Bruce Glen (Melanie) of Rushford; three granddaughters; one great-grandchild; one sister Barb Fetters of Promise City, Iowa; one brother, Jerry Williams of Gordon, Iowa; sister-in-law Liz Bonnett of LaCrosse, Wis. and a brother-in-law, George (Judy) Bonnett of Witchita Falls, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews in Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Twyla Smith and a brother-in-law, Dwight Fetters.
He loved working in the yard and garden, was an avid hunter and fisherman, played softball, golfed and bowled. His passion for country music spanned over 50 years, played guitar, had an excellent voice and entertained at every opportunity.
Funeral services were May 3 at the Randolph Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa, the Rev. Robert Drier officiated. Burial was in the Corydon Cemetery in Corydon.

Barb Wenthold
Barb Wenthold, 62, of Osakis passed away unexpectedly on Wed. (April 28, 2004) at her home in Osakis, Minn.
Barbara Shelien Paulson was born on July 23, 1941 in Chicago, Ill. As an infant she was adopted by Ulrich and Wilma (McGuire) Paulson.
She was raised in Olin, Iowa and was married to Jerry Wenthold on December 30, 1961 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They lived for nine years in Postville, Iowa and then moved and farmed near Rushford. They owned Barb’s Variety store and they also worked as realtors. After completing her LPN nursing training, Barb worked for the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Rushford. In 1994, Barb and Jerry bought the Lakeland Motel in Osakis and have lived there ever since.
Mrs. Wenthold was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis. She was a member of the Osakis VFW Auxiliary, belonged to the House of Prayer and was the president of the local TOPS chapter.
She had many interests and hobbies. She loved to do handwork, such as knitting and crocheting and especially enjoyed making baby blankets, many of which she donated to the church. She liked to play cards, read, watch old movies and was involved in Community Theatre productions. She loved to keep in touch with family and friends, either by letter or by email.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jerry Wenthold of Osakis; children, Karen (Steven) Rislov of Houston, Wayne (Kerry) Wenthold of Black River Falls, Wis., David (Stephanie) Wenthold and Mary Jo (Dave) Rosenow, all of Hopkins, Minn.; three grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Eleanor) Paulson of Olin, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
A Mass of Resurrection was held on May 1 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis, Fr. Dick McGuire officiated.
Arrangements were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis.

Stella J. (Evans) Happel
Stella J. (Evans) Happel, 93 of rural Houston died on Friday (April 30, 2004) at Lutheran Home in Caledonia.
She was born Aug. 22, 1910 on South Ridge, rural LaCresent to Sheldon J. and Sophia C. (Lind) Evans. She graduated from Caledonia High School in 1927, and from Winona Teachers College in 1929.
She taught in rural schools and married Wesley C. Happel on June 14, 1932. She achieved her Bachelors Degree from Winona State College and taught at Houston Public Elementary School remedial reading; and retired after 25 years. She also assisted her husband in farming thoughout the years.
She was a member of South Ridge United Methodist Church and its women’s organization. Stella was also a member of the Houston County Historical Society and Fire Warden for Houston County. She enjoyed reading and writing; she wrote a book/guide on teaching reading, “Stella’s No Nonsense Cookbook”, and many articles for the Houston Gazette in a column titled, “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”. She worked on writing three family trees and her church’s history.
She is survived by two daughters; Yvonne (Julian) Nichols of Sacramento, Calif. and Charlotte (Larry) Braniff of Houston; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter Karen, one son Charles, one grandson, three brothers and twp sisters.
Funeral services were May 5 at South Ridge United Methodist Church in rural LaCresent, with Rev. Lora Sturm officiating. Burial was in Loretta Cemetery.
