Lula A. Vix
Lula A. Vix, 88, of Houston, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2001) at Franciscan - Skemp Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born on May 6, 1912, in Houston County, to William and Maude (Johnston) Ray.
She married Lloyd O. Vix in 1930 in Winona. He died in 1987. Lula and her husband were life-long farmers. She also worked for Auto Lite in LaCrosse and Rush Products in Rushford. Lula was very active on the farm and enjoyed keeping up her lawn. She loved to drive her tractors, play cards, go camping and spend time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston where she was a member of WELCA and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the North and South Senior Citizen’s groups in LaCrosse.
Mrs. Vix is survived by two sons: Lloyd J. (June) Vix and Charles (Barbara) Vix both of Houston; one daughter: Ruth (Donald) Boyum of Houston; 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; one sister: Lora (Kenneth) Schlabach of Holmen, Wis.; and one sister-in-law: Thelma Ray of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister Lila Arnett, five brothers: Lea Ray, Lloyd Ray, and Lyle Ray, and two brothers who died in infancy.
Funeral services were Jan. 31 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hokah. The family prefers memorials be directed to the Valley View Nursing Home or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.

Roy A. Overland
Roy A. Overland, 77, of Richfield, a native of Rushford, died on Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001).
He was born April 18, 1923, in Harmony to Selmer and Gena (Hegland) Overland.
He served in the U.S. Marines in World War II and was employed at Pillsbury Company for 35 years in Minneapolis. He was a member of the Wold-Chamberlain American Legion Post 99 in Richfield.
On May 25, 1948, he married Marilyn Kilgern.
He is survived by wife Marilyn; daughter Sandra of Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law Nancy of Rothschild, Wis.; sister-in-law Marilyn Overland, Plymouth; two grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly (George) Simpson of Rochester and Geraldine (Charles) DeCorsey of Bloomington; nieces; nephews; cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dennis and brother Gordon.
Funeral services were Feb. 2 at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Richfield. Funeral services were also Feb. 3 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, near Rushford, the Rev. Rodney Nygren officiated. Burial with military rites were held in Highland Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.
Casketbearers were Robb DeCorsey, David Overland, Eric Overland, Todd Overland, Tryg Overland and Al Wieloch.

Herbert Lawrence Prudoehl
A funeral Mass for Herbert Lawrence Prudoehl was held Feb. 2 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston, the Rev. Peter Schuster officiated. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Wilson.
Mr. Prudoehl, 86, formerly of Lewiston, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Winona County. On July 2, 1940, he married Gertrude Anna Wessel in Wilson. Mr. Prudoehl owned and operated Wyattville Feed Mill for 18 years and then was a custodian at St. Teresa’s College in Winona until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston and the Knights of Columbus, where he was a 4th degree knight.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis of Rushford; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Norma Kiese of Rochester. Four sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.

Luellen E. VanGundy
Luellen E. VanGundy, 95, of Houston, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born on April 27, 1905, in Ostrander to Peter and Isabella (Hagen) Olson. Luellen was raised in the Ostrander and Grand Meadow areas.
She married Carl VanGundy on Sept. 6, 1923. They moved to Houston shortly after their marriage and farmed in the area for many years until their retirement. They moved to Houston in 1956.
She cooked at various restaurants in Houston and worked as a volunteer at the Valley View Nursing Home. Mrs. VanGundy was a member of the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, church circle and ladies aide, the Iris Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by eight sons, Harold (Dolores) of Houston, Donald (LaVon) of Houston, Wesley (Dorothy) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Francis (Shirley) of Houston, Junior (Donna) of Houston, Robert (Laurel) of St. Paul, Allen (Loretta) of Hokah, and Larry (Patty) of Houston; two daughters, Lois Quillin of La Crescent and Judy (Steve Mrachek) Ledebuhr of Winona; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Selma) Olson of Togo, Minn., and Willis (Thelma) Olson of Apache Junction, Ariz.; two sisters, Edith (Wayne) Guy of Ostrander and Arletta Jurasinski of Mountain View, Calif.; four sisters-in-law, Carrie Sue Olson of Phoenix, Ariz., Joyce Olson of Rochester, Marie Olson of Winona and Elizabeth Puterbaugh of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two grandsons; one son-in-law; six brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services were Feb. 2 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, the Revs. Lane Zaffke and Louise Stromberg officiated. Burial was in the Money Creek Cemetery.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to Valley View Nursing Home, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or A.B.L.E. Group Home.

Frieda Behmler
Frieda Behmler, 87, of Mound, Minn., passed away Sat., Feb. 3, 2001, at the Presbyterian Homes Care Center in Spring Park. Funeral services were Feb. 6 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mound, with Rev. John Rogers officiating. Interment was in the Union Cemetery in Mound.
Frieda Alice (Peterson) Behmler was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Rushford to Helmer and Lettie (Bathrick) Peterson. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her faith in 1928 by Reverend Walter Wang at the Rushford Lutheran Church.
She received her post-secondary education in Beauty School and held a beautician’s license most of her life.
On June 5, 1935, she married Edward J. Behmler from Jordon, Minn., in Decorah, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Maureen and John. The couple resided in Rushford and Glenwood, before settling in Mound in 1938. They moved to Mound when her husband accepted a position with the school system.
Mrs. Behmler was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mound since 1938, the Westonka Seniors group, and the American Legion Auxiliary for 50 years.
Survivors include daughter, Maureen Hantge of Hutchinson, Minn.; son, John (Ann) Behmler of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren; five great-grandsons; a sister, Ardis (Allen) Meinecke of Donna, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother John Peterson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Casketbearers were grandchildren Robert Hantge, Richard Hantge, Jennifer Behmler, Elizabeth Behmler, Nick Hantge, Andrew Hantge, Michael Hantge, Gavin Hantge and Jay Hantge.

Ellenore Boyum
Ellenore Boyum, 81, a long-time farm homemaker, died Feb. 10 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran home in Rushford.
Ellenore Holland was born Jan. 11, 1920, at Sebeka, Minn., Ottertail County, to Elmer and Inger (Agrimson) Holland. She graduated from country school, and Sebeka High School in 1946.
On Oct. 10, 1940, she married Chester Boyum at the Paddock Bethel Church in Sebeka. They farmed at Utica, Minn., until Chester died in 1992.
She had many talents. Family and friends were important in her life. She was a member of Arendahl Lutheran Church, Peterson Garden Club, Iowa State China Club and the Sons of Norway, and served in various offices and committees.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Boyum of Rushford and Shirley (Orvin) Helgemoe of Utica; four grandchildren, Tim (Laurie) Helgemoe of Utica, Mark Helgemoe of Lake City, Matt Helgemoe of Utica and Sara (Brian) Beck of Ramsey, Minn; one sister, Bernice Swanberg of Golden Valley, Minn.; one brother, Silas (Lillian) Holland of Peterson; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her twin sister, Evangeline; and one brother, Amos.
Funeral services will be Fri., Feb. 16 at Arendahl Lutheran Church with Peter Huggenvik officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes-Cook Rushford Chapel on Thur., 5 to 8 pm, and one hour prior to the funeral service.

Bruce L. Meistad
Bruce L. Meistad, 51, of Houston, died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) of an apparent heart attack while at work in Rushford.
He was born on March 20, 1949, in Chippewa Falls, Wis., to Gordon and Betty (Walters) Meistad. He was raised in Arcadia, Wis., and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1967.
Mr. Meistad married Kay Pfister on Oct. 31, 1970. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in 1971, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting. He worked for the Internal Revenue Service for two years. Mr. Meistad worked for the Riverland Energy Cooperative in Arcadia from 1975 to 1982. He moved to Houston, Minn., in 1982 and served as the Chief Executive Officer of Tri-County Electric Cooperative in Rushford from 1982 until the time of his death.
Mr. Meistad was a member of the Onalaska United Methodist Church in Onalaska, Wis., the Houston School Board, the Houston Economic Development Authority.
His interests included woodworking, yard work, and travel.
He is survived by his wife Kay; one son, Lane Meistad of Houston; one daughter, Angela Meistad of Houston; six sisters, Karen (Gaylord) Metzler of Whitehall, Wis., Kathy (Bob) Erickson of Arcadia, Wis., Jean (Rick) Reuter of Waumandee, Wis., May Gilbertson of Arcadia, Wis., Beth (Charlie) Loeffler of Geneva, Ill., and Terri Mynhier of Norfolk, Vir.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Feb. 12 at the Onalaska United Methodist Church in Onalaska, Wis., with the Rev. Bruce Bartel officiating.

Curtiss D. Danielson
Curtiss D. Danielson, 75, 404 22nd Ave. S., Moorhead, died Feb. 10 in his home.
He was born in Fillmore Co. on Nov. 25, 1925 to Clarence and Tillie (Olson) Danielson, and grew up in rural Fillmore Co. He attended school in Peterson, graduating early, and joined the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945. He then attended the Winona Business College and the University of Arkansas.
In 1953 he married Helen Marie Korsness of Hesper, Iowa. They moved to Moorhead where he worked at Concordia College holding various administrative positions until he retired in 1989.
Curtiss was also active in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Helping Hands, Kiwanis, and Dollars for Scholars.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, David Danielson, Minneapolis, and Steven (Rhonda) Danielson, M.D., St. Cloud; two daughters, Debra Danielson, Minneapolis, and Nancy Danielson, Falcon Heights; two brothers, Donald (Charlotte) Danielson, Summerfield, FL, and Myron (Nancy) Danielson, Hayfield; one sister, Norma (Merlin) Halverson, Rushford; and five grandchildren.
His funeral was Feb. 13 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead. Interment was at Moorhead Memorial Gardens.

Helen M. Dvorak
Helen M. Dvorak, 87, of Rushford, died Feb. 15, 2001 at the Bremmer Suites of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
She was born on May 1, 1913, in Mason City, Iowa to John and Johanna (Ryan) Tracy. She moved with her family as a small child to the Rushford area.
She graduated from Rushford High School in 1931, and married Edward Dvorak on October 5, 1938, in Rushford. She and Edward then moved to the Dvorak family farm east of Rushford, which they farmed until moving to Rushford in 1990.
Helen moved into the Bremmer Suites one year ago. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford, and the Altar Society.
She is survived by her husband Edward; one son, Paul (Luanne) Dvorak of Rushford; one daughter, Rose Marie (Harvey) Anderson of Woodbury, Minn.; six grandchildren: Michael, Matthew, Teresa, Tim, Brian, and Chris; and one great-grandson, Samuel.
She was preceded in death by her sister Frances and her brother Gerald.
There was a Funeral Mass on Feb. 17 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. William Kulas officiating.
