Eldora K. Austad
The funeral for Eldora K. Austad was in Memorial Chapel at Zumbro Lutheran Church, the pastors of the church officiated. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Austad, 89, of Northgate Plaza, Rochester, a former housekeeper and dietary worker, died Wednesday evening (Feb. 21, 2001) at Saint Mary’s Hospital.
Eldora Kathryne Hellerud was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Choice, Fillmore County, to Hjalmer and Cora (Hoel) Hellerud and grew up in the area. On Dec. 5, 1932, she married James. O. Austad in Mabel. They lived in Minneapolis and she was employed in the dietary department at Lutheran Deacons Hospital. They returned to Rochester in 1974. Her husband was a maintenance worker at Lutheran Deacons Hospital, a cab driver and a motel operator. He died on May 16, 1996. Mrs. Austad was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church and enjoyed needlecrafts and traveling.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine R. Corey of Rochester; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, a daughter and a brother.
Memorials are suggested to Zumbro Lutheran Church.

Gilma J. Ekern
Gilma J. Ekern, 83, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
Gilma Jeanette Nordness was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Rushford to Gilbert and Josephine (Daley) Nordness.
On Nov. 11, 1943, she married Charles Ekern in Highland Prairie. He later died Oct. 28, 1986.
Mrs. Ekern was a life-long homemaker in Rushford. She was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church as well as its Ladies Aid and Helping Hand Club. She took great joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be remembered for her excellent cooking and baking.
Survivors include a daughter, Corrine (Carroll) Hill of Rushford; two sons, Roger (Susan) Ekern of Rushford and Arland (Tami) Ekern of St. Michael; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arthur (Dorothy) Nordness of Bonanza, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Alice; and a brother, Elmer.
Funeral services were Feb. 24 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Eino Adolph Maki
Eino Adolph Maki, 84, formerly of Winona, died Monday (Feb. 26, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Rushford.
He was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Virginia, Minn., to Aleksis “Alex” and Maria (Pokkyla) Maki. He attended Roosevelt High School and at age 16 joined the CCC program, working in the Ely area. Eino was a World War II veteran of the Navy. On Jan. 27, 1944, he married Anne Marie Nurmi in Brooklyn, New York. She died on March 27, 1999.
After the war ended, Eino attended RCA Institute NYC and received a degree in radio, television and telephone communications. In 1946, he was hired by the New York Telephone Company, as a switchman. He later became a Bell Laboratory design team engineer, and his department was involved in implementing and perfecting the technology of “direct dialing.”
During this time, Eino and Anne lived in Staten Island, where they raised their family. Eino coached Little League baseball, and enjoyed many years as a Boy Scout troop leader. He also bowled for the NY Telephone League.
In 1977, Eino and Anne retired to Duluth, where they also spent time at their cabin on Island Lake. Eino was always happy to have family and friends come for coffee and sauna. He was an avid sports fan, liked pitching horseshoes, and fishing for walleye. He was proud of his Finnish heritage, and devoted to his family. Eino will be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who enjoyed spending time with family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren.
They moved to Winona in 1991. In 1998, Eino joined Good Shepherd and was always seen wearing a baseball cap, and enjoying the activities.
Survivors include a daughter Marylin (Lyle) Kiral of Lewiston; a son William (Linda) Maki of Montvale, New Jersey; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Ermi (Sulo) Ronback of Duluth, Nellie Maki of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Ethel (Martin) Hudson of Virginia.
Besides his parents, Eino was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; and brothers, Edi, Walter, Edward, Bruno and Victor.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating.
Military honors will be provided by the VFW Neville-Lien Post #1287.
Memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd Activities Department.

Inez Sylvia Peterson
Inez Sylvia Peterson, 92, of Winona died Feb. 28, 2001 at Winona Community Hospital.
She was born on March 12, 1908, in Lanesboro, Minn., to Ole Peterson and Hannah Anderson. She married Arthur Melvin Peterson in 1930 in Crocker, S.D. They farmed in the areas of Lanesboro, Yucatan and Canton until 1971 when they moved to Spring Grove, and then to Winona.
Inez was a member of the Highland Lutheran Church of rural Whalan. She treasured her family and church. Among other things she’ll be remembered for her kind and thoughtful ways, her excellent cooking and baking, entertaining, gardening, reading and sending cards and letters.
She is survived by two sons, Everett (Winnie) Peterson of Winona and Duane (Bonnie) Peterson of Rushford; two daughters, Marilyn (Willis) Boyer of Winona, Darlyne Kennelly of Boca Raton, FL; one daughter-in-law Linda Peterson of Houston; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister Celia Peterson of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son David; three sisters, Mabel Bergey, Ella Simonson and Doris Peterson; and one son-in-law Thomas Kennelly.
Funeral services were Mar. 3 at Highland Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Paul Johnson officiated.

Ruth M. Goergen
Ruth M. Goergen, 81, of Winona, died Monday (Mar. 19, 2001) at her home.
She as born Oct. 8, 1919, in Winona to Carl and Elizabeth (Hilbe) Goetzman. She was married to Clarence M. Goergen on Oct. 8, 1938.
Mrs. Goergen was employed by Winona Printing Co. for 20 years prior to retirement. She as a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish.
Survivors include her five children, Mary (Jon) Mullen, Winona, Stephen (Sherri) Goergen, Rochester, Bernard (Vicky) Goergen, Fountain City, Wis., Martha (John) Korupp, Peterson, and Beth (Mark) Parma, Rollingstone; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Carpenter, Wabasha, and Irene Gallagher, St. Petersburg, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter Judy, one brother, four sisters, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was Mar. 22 at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home in Winona, the Rev. John M. Sauer officiated.

Bethany (Betty) E. Gaustad
Bethany (Betty) E. Gaustad, 80, died Tuesday (Nov. 2, 2004) at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Bridge Creek Valley, Rushford to George and Ella (Dahl) Gorder. She was a life long resident of the Houston area.
She married Alvin (Jimmy) Gaustad on Feb. 28, 1945.
Mrs. Gaustad was a true farm wife. She was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed doing “chores”; she milked cows for 45 years, along with tending the home and being a wonderful cook. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, 4-H, the Garden Club and the American Legion Women’s Auxillary. She enjoyed cooking, baking, especially making lefsa and gardening.
Mrs. Gaustad is survived by her husband Jimmy; a son, Larry (Debra) Gaustad, Houston; a daughter, Laurie (Gaustad) Nord and her fiancée Royce DeCook , Rochester; one-grandson; three step-grandchildren; a sister Lyla (Mrs. Bernie) Gaustad, Rushford.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Richard.
Funeral services were Nov. 6 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Houston. The Rev. Lane Zaffke officiated. Burial was in Stone Church Cemetery.

Cheryl ‘Cherrie’ Lee Tudahl
Cheryl “Cherrie” Lee Tudahl, 50, of Rushford, died surrounded by her family Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born March 12, 1951, in Rushford to Henry O. and Clarice O. (Haugen) Tudahl. She was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church. She attended Rushford Public School and lived all her life in Rushford.
Her greatest joy was her family and taking care of her mother and little children. Her special charges were her great-nephew Devin, and his brothers, Elijah and Luke, Cheryl was also an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.
She is survived by two brothers, Curtis (Audrey) Tudahl of Rushford and Milton (Leslie) Tudahl of Joppa, Maryland; four sisters, Beverly Hallum, Patricia (Mervin) Stennes and Rebecca (Alan) Hanson, all of Rushford, and Janice (Ken) Gaustad of rural Houston; a brother-in-law, Bill Wolfe; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Delores Zitzman, Bettie Wolfe and Elizabeth Tudahl; and three brothers-in-law, John Hallum, Carrol Hanson and Jerry Holter.
Funeral services were Jan. 29 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Alpha O. Thompson
Alpha O. Thompson, 95, of Rushford, died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born on Aug. 12, 1906 near Highland in Fillmore County, Minnesota to Hans and Isabell (Johnson) Hungerholt. She was raised near Highland.
In Dec. of 1924, she married Arthur G. Thompson. They farmed in the Bratsberg area until his death in Jan. of 1973.
Mrs. Thompson stayed on the farm until entering the nursing home in 1989. She enjoyed farming, reading, flower gardening, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons: Harley (Edith) Thompson of Rushford, and Dale (Geraldine) Thompson, Sr. of Harmony; two daughters: Ioen (Berton) Paulson and Marilyn (Errol) Osmonson, both of Houston; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers, five sisters, one granddaughter, and one grandson in infancy.
Funeral services were on Jan. 26 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home chapel in Rushford with Alpha’s granddaughter, the Rev. Lora Sturm officiating. Burial was in the Hungerholt Cemetery in rural Peterson.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Hungertholt Cemetery or the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.

Sylvia G. Mollenkopf
Sylvia G. Mollenkopf, 83, of East Palestine, Ohio, passed away Sunday (Dec. 16, 2001) at the Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient for the past week.
Mrs. Mollenkopf was born May 26, 1918, in LaCrosse, Wis., a daughter of the late Martin and Ella Gaarder Thompson. She was raised by her Aunt Gina and Uncle Gynther Overland in Rushford, where she attended school. She graduated from the Cook County School of Nursing, Chicago, IIl., and had at one time been employed with St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, as a registered nurse.
She and her husband, Dr. Arthur D. Mollenkopf, whom she married May 8, 1940 and preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1997, moved to the East Palestine area in 1945, from Petersburg, Ohio.
Mrs. Mollenkopf is survived by her four daughters and two son-in-laws, Patricia Madden, Sandra and Bob Chaplow, Loren Stoll, and Karen and Bruce Jordon. She also leaves nine grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kay and Lyle Erickson, and Lucille Burke,
Mrs. Mollenkopf was preceded in death by a grandson, Brett Rowe, a brother, Milford Thompson, and a sister, Georgia Overland.
A Memorial Service was held Dec. 20, at the Centenary United Methodist Church with Reverend Ronald C. Spore officiating.
