Veronica C. O’Donnell
Veronica C. “Boot” O’Donnell, 81, of Rushford died Monday (April 29, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Home after a brief illness. She was born April 26, 1921, in Houston County to John and Mary (Saunders) O’Donnell. She lived on the family farm on Vinegar Hill in Houston until moving to Rushford. Veronica worked many years at various restaurants in Rushford including Bud’s Coffee Shop, the last place she worked. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford and its Altar Society. She enjoyed growing flowers and caring for her pets.
Survivors include a sister, Rosemary Randall of Rushford; a brother, Harold (Dorothy) O’Donnell of Rushford; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, brother-in-law Alan Randall, and a niece preceded her in death.
A Funeral Mass will be offered today (May 2) at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Reverend William Kulas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church today.

Robert L. Rislove
A memorial service for Robert L. Rislove was held May 15 at Christ Lutheran Church, Preston, the Rev. James Rushton officiated. Burial of his ashes was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
Mr. Rislove, 81, of Preston, died Sunday (May 11, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Rushford and was a 1938 graduate of Rushford High School.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1941 and served primarily in the south Pacific until his discharge as a sergeant in January 1946. On May 12, 1945, he married Grace Amble in Peterson.
Following his discharge, he worked with his father in a family painting business for several years and then became U.S. Postmaster in Peterson.
From 1959 to 1982, he was employed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a state game warden in Fillmore County until his retirement. He often spoke on nature, hunting, fishing and firearm safety at churches, schools, 4-H clubs and sportsmen’s clubs in and near Fillmore County. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a volunteer deputy with the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, gun collecting and restoration, hunting, fishing, trapping and was a Boy Scout leader as a young man.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Dick (Anne) of Edina, Jerry (Jeanne) of Gilbert, Ariz., and Bill (Lori) of Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Sheila) of Rushford; and one sister, Jill Schacht of Dayton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Leif Magelssen
Leif Magelssen, 75, of Rushford, died Saturday (May 25, 2002) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born on August 5, 1926, in Norway Township of Fillmore County, Minn. to Wilhelm and Dora (Solhem) Magelssen.
He served in the U.S. during the Korean Conflict. After the Army, Leif worked at the Rushford Creamery and later worked for many years at what is currently T.R.W. in Rusbford.
He was a member of the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church. He always enjoyed joking and visiting with his friends and family.
He is survived by two sisters: Thora (Richard) Lombard of Rushford and Sonja (Jerome) Kulas of Winona, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Funeral services were May 29 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, the Rev. Wade Davick officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Kenneth G. Lerol
Kenneth G. Lerol, 68, of Pine Island died on Wednesday (May 22, 2002) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Funeral services were May 28 at the Pine Island United Methodist Church, the Reverend Ruth Phelps officiated. Burial was in Pine Island Cemetery.
Kenneth Grant Lerol was born December 2, 1933, in Whalan to Lloyd and Helen (nee Engrav) Lerol.
He attended school in Rushford where he graduated in 1951. After spending two years in the U.S. Army he started his career as an electrician working for Moe Electric in Lewiston and later worked for Koenig Electric in Pine Island for 18 years. He also worked for other electrical contractors and after an accident he retired in 1992.
On November 22, 1969, he married Mavis Noser at the United Methodist Church in Pine Island.
He was a member of the 343 Electrician Union for over 20 years and a member of the United Methodist Church in Pine Island.
Kenneth enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and bird watching.
He is survived by his wife Mavis; one daughter, Cindy (Tim) Sanborn of Mazeppa; one son, Bill Avery of Pine Island; three grandchildren; two sisters, Janice (Eddy) Brown of Winona and Pat (Dave) Johnson of Utica.
His parents preceded him in death.
Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Clinic Kidney Research Foundation.

Lowell Hoff
Lowell William Hoff, 74, of St. Charles died Monday (May 28, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Hoff was born April 25, 1928 in Downing, Wis., to James and Luella (Stoner) Hoff. He graduated from Glenwood City High School in 1946 and from Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in 1955. He served in the Army from January 1952 until December 1953 in the Korean Conflict, stationed in Tokyo, Japan. He and Joan Johnson were married October 18, 1952 in Superior, Wis. They made their home in Superior and Milwaukee, Wis., before moving to St. Charles in 1969 and purchased the Sellner Funeral Home, which became Hoff Funeral Homes, in which he was active until his death.
Mr. Hoff was a member of St. Charles United Methodist Church and past lay leader; member and Past-President of St. Charles Lions Club; 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge belonging to Rising Sun Masonic Lodge where he had served as Secretary for 14 years; Order of the Eastern Star both of St. Charles; Past-President of St. Charles Chamber of Commerce; Past-Commander of VFW; Service officer of American Legion both of St. Charles. He was a member of the Osman Temple Shriners and its Zagalas Car Club; member of Minnesota and Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association; former member of Winona County Fair Board; and a former board member of Winona County Historical Society.
Mr. Hoff loved to travel, he and Joan enjoyed many wonderful trips. His positive outlook is exemplified with his ‘Smiley Face’ flower garden in his back yard. He enjoyed time with his family, his grandchildren will long remember rides with grandpa in his convertible and golf cart.
Survivors include his wife Joan, three children, Lori (Gary) Nelson of Alden, Minn.; Tim (Jenny) Hoff of St. Charles; Gary (Sue) Hoff of Rushford; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl (Ernie) Severson of Glenwood City, Wis. and Shirley Humpal of Boyceville, Wis.. His parents, two brothers and infant twin daughters preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday at Hoff Funeral Home’s - St. Charles Chapel. They may also call one hour before services at the church. There will be a Tribute Service of Remembrance Friday 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The St. Charles Veteran of Foreign Wars and American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

Gilman Gudmundson
Gilman Gudmundson, 79, of Rushford, died Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born March 29, 1923, in Choice, to Gerhard and Stella (Olson) Gudmundson. He was baptized and confirmed at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, was raised the Rushford area and was a graduate of Rushford High School.
He was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church.
Mr. Gudmundson farmed all his life in the Rushford area. For the last 40 yeas he farmed on the Charles Brekke farm. He loved going to dances and visiting with friends.
He will be greatly missed by his family: Edie, Sharon, Corry, John, and Paul.
He is survived by many cousins and was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were June 7 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in the Highland Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Almira K. Swiggum
Almira K. Swiggum, 84, of Rushford, died Thursday (June 13, 2002) at Winona Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
She was born on July 31, 1917, in Arendahl Township of Fillmore County, Minn., to Christ and Isabell (Valde) Swiggum. She was baptized and confirmed at Arendahl Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, where she was a faithful member of the W.E.L.C.A. and Faith Circle.
She sold lefse and was an excellent baker. She enjoyed garage sales and bought a large quantity of children’s clothing which she mended and washed and would then donate to Lutheran World Relief. Miss Swiggum worked in the hotel-motel business in Winona for several years. She enjoyed flower gardening and houseplants. She loved living independently all her life.
She is survived by many cousins.
Miss Swiggum was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ernest; one sister, Evelyn Jertson; and one nephew, Larry Jertson.
Funeral services were June 18 at Arendahl Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, the Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Kenneth ‘Pete’ Hewitt
Kenneth “Pete” Hewitt, 53, of Oronoco, died Monday (June 10, 2002) at his home following a tractor-mower accident. Funeral services were June 14 at Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston with Rev. Carolyn Westlake officiating. Burial was in Webster Prairie Cemetery, Baraboo, Wis.
Kenneth Hewitt was born on Nov. 7, 1948, in Winona, the son of Kenneth F. and June (Mortimer) Hewitt. He graduated from Preston High School in 1967. He worked with his father at Hewitt Motors in Preston. After that he went into business for himself as a new and used tire salesman in Oronoco. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and many outdoor activities.
He is survived by one son, Drew, of Rochester; his mother, June Hewitt of Tuscon, Ariz.; two sisters, Sharon (Mrs. Charles) Strand of Mesa, Ariz.; and Nancy (Mrs. Donald) Pischke of Tuscon, Ariz.; nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Oranda (Jeri) Hoiseth
Oranda (Jeri) Hoiseth, 90, of Rushford died Sunday (June 30, 2002) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
She was born Nov. 11, 1911, on the family farm near Rushford, to Tollef and Guro (Aase) Jorde.
She married Henry Hoiseth at Rushford Lutheran church on December 9, 1939.
Mrs. Hoiseth was a homemaker and helped with many of the duties on the farm. She was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church, WELCA, and a women’s circle. She enjoyed square dancing and country music.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, on June 11, 1987; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were July 3 at Rushford Lutheran Church. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
