Lillie K. Danielson
The funeral for Lillie K. Danielson was Aug. 28 at Henrytown Lutheran Church, rural Canton, the Rev. Jeff Forbes officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Danielson, 85, of Lanesboro, a former housekeeper and pie maker, died of complications of heart surgery Saturday (Aug. 24, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she had been a patient 10 days.
Lillie K. Honsey was born Apr. 1, 1917, in Peterson and married Hiram Danielson there on July 22, 1940. Before moving to Lanesboro in 1969, she lived in rural Chatfield, rural Peterson, Waukon, Iowa, and Canton. She was a housekeeper for several doctors in Rochester and made pies for the Chat-and-Chew Cafe in Lanesboro. Her husband died July 10, 2001.
Mrs. Danielson was a member of Henrytown Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle, Sons of Norway and Lanesboro American Legion Auxiliary, and was a volunteer for Relay for Life.
Survivors include five sons, Carrol (Lois) of Harmony, Gary (Debbie) and Ronnie (Sandy), both of Lanesboro, Dennis (Phyllis) of Rushford and Michael of Austin; seven daughters, Sharon Mickelson of Harmony, Mavis Dion of St. Paul, Janet (Dean) Burdick of Chanhassen, Julie (Glen) Jensson, Susie (Walter) Bradley and Lolly (Doug) Kessel, all of Lanesboro, and Helen (Miles) Edmundson of Ramsey; 29 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Lois) Honsey of Lanesboro; and a sister, Sylvia Moberg of St. Paul.
A great-granddaughter, three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Alice Marie Meyer
Services for Alice Marie Meyer, 97, of Winona were August 27 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wilson, with interment in the church cemetery. Mrs. Meyer died Saturday (August 24, 2002) at Lake Manor Nursing Home.
Alice Marie (Lanz) Meyer was born August 26, 1905, to Herman and Marie (Papenfuss) Lanz in their farmhouse on Stinson Ridge near Ridgeway. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Nodine, and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, Ridgeway, the church organized and built by her father and seven other men in 1908.
She became a member of Wilson Trinity Lutheran Church in 1934 when her family moved to Wyattville. She attended Golish District 83 country school, graduated from LaCrosse Central High School and earned her teaching certification from Winona Normal School (now Winona State University).
She taught grades 1-8 at six different one-room schools in rural Winona County from 1923-1934. She then worked on the U.S. Government Corn Hog Program in Lewiston until 1936 when she became a full-time farmer’s wife and homemaker.
Alice married Henry F. “Hank” Meyer on June 10, 1936, at Wilson Trinity Lutheran Church. He died September 13, 1985. She continued to live on the family farm until July 1999 when she moved to Alterra Sterling House in Winona. She was a Sunday school teacher, 4-H adult leader, member and officer of Ladies Aid, Women’s Missionary League, Sunshine Club, and Homemakers.
Survivors are four children: David (Marie Karasch) Meyer of Wilson, Ardell Doering of Wykoff, Eugene (Sheri Lundgren) Meyer of Wilson, and Carol Lynn (Lyle) Ziemann of Chesterfield, Mo; 12 grandchildren; brother Raymond (Phyllis) Lanz; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters Gladys (Robert) Stinson and Evelyn (Alfred) Brandt; brother Arnold (Rosie) Lanz, and son-in-law William Doering.

Phyllis J. Froiland
Phyllis J. Froiland, 73, of Rushford, died Thursday (Aug. 22, 2002) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Mar. 1, 1929, in Houston to Clinton and Grace (Ensrud) Virock. She was raised in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School. She attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
On Jan. 22, 1949, she married Alfred W. Froiland.
Mrs. Froiland had worked at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home for several years. She also worked at the National Bank of Rushford for 25 years as a loan officer, retiring in 1996.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Froiland had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed reading, current events, sports, and politics.
She is survived by one son, Daniel Froiland of Marine on St. Croix, Minn.; two daughters; Kathy Froiland of Houston, Tex. and Mary (Brian) Baker of San Antonio, Tex.; two grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ronnenberg of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Funeral services were Aug. 26 at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial was in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Clair O. Overland
Clair O. Overland, 74, of Rushford, died Sunday (Sept. 1, 2002) at his home.
He was born January 30, 1928, in Fillmore County, Minn., to Hans and Emma (Carlson) Overland. He was raised in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School in 1946. He worked at the Rushford Creamery for several years after high school.
On May 2, 1952, he married Ellen Maland. Then he worked at the Hart Creamery and Farm Service in Hart for 20 years. He started the M.S.I, Insurance Company Office in Rushford in 1972. He worked in the M.S.I. office for 20 years and was still working in the insurance business until the time of his death.
Mr. Overland was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church and the Men’s Club there, the Rushford Lions Club, of which he was past president. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, golfing, boating, fishing, camping, and especially following his grandchildren’s activities.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons: Phil (Mary Anne) Overland of Rushford and David Overland of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Pam (Jerry) Klema of Roseau and Lori (Perry) Benson of Houston; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; three step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Thelma Hughes of Houston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Boyum; two brothers-in-law Robert Hughes and Erdman Boyum; and one son-in-law, Jerry Bunke.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday (Sept. 6) at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial of Clair’s cremated body will be in the church cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel.

Cleve Williams
Cleve Williams, 64, died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California on August 18, 2002.
He was born April 1, 1938 in Saginaw, Mich. He married Sybil Betz of Rushford on August 24, 1977.
Mr. Williams completed his education at San Jose State University. He began his career in parks and recreation working for the cities of Palo Alto and San Jose. From 1969 to 1972, he taught at the Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California. He then became director of Parks and Recreation in Seaside, Calif. and moved on to director positions with the cities of Portland, Oregon, and Oakland, Calif. His most recent position was as golf manager for the city of Los Angeles, which gave him the opportunity to create a new golf division for the largest municipal golf operation in the United States.
Mr. Williams was active in many community organizations. He was appointed to the 1st Agricultural District by former Gov. Jerry Brown and served for several years as a director of the Monterey Jazz Festival. He also served on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club, SW Regional Center, and Orange County Black Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of California Parks and Recreation Society, the National Forum of Black Public Administrators and served as president of the Ethnic Minority Society. In 1999, the Orange County NRRCP honored Mr. Williams as the African American Citizen of Distinction.
His passions were golf, jazz, and promoting youth activities. He took every opportunity to spend time at his home on the Monterey Peninsula and to vacation with his family on his favorite beaches in Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife, Sybil Williams of Monterey and Santa Ana, Calif., his mother, a brother and two sisters of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julianne Williams, and his father.
Memorial services were held at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana on Aug. 21, and at the Paul Mortuary Chapel in Monterey on Aug. 24, 2002. Burial was held at Monterey City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions were suggested for the Cleve Williams Tregnan Academy Youth Golf Scholarship in Los Angeles, the Monterey Jazz Festival Education Fund of Monterey, Calif, and the Get a Grip Foundation of Irvine, Calif.

Cora M. Holger
Cora M. Holger, 85, of Rushford, died Monday (Sept. 16, 2002) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
She was born Oct. 28, 1916, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Carl and Mary (Stensgaard) Dahl. She was raised in Yucatan and rural Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School in 1934. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. for one year and returned home to help her parents with the farm.
On June 8, 1946, she married Kermit Holger at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, Minn. they built a home in South Rushford and Mrs. Holger lived there until shortly before her death.
Mrs. Holger was an active member of Rushford Lutheran and its women’s groups. She was co-president of the Miriam Circle for many years. Mrs. Holger was an excellent cook, an accomplished seamstress and an avid gardener. She was a member of the Rushford Garden Club until it was disbanded. Mrs. Holger will always be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by four children: David (Willa) Holger of Ames, Iowa, Mary (Gregg) Larson of Eagan, Minn., Carl (Sue) Holger of Rushford, and Ann (Larry) Bartelson of Rushford; eight grandchildren: Beth (John) Toth, Katherine Holger, Jon Joseph, and Jaclyn Holger, Andrew and Karen Bartelson and Erik Larson; one brother-in-law, Morris (Clarrisa) Holger, and one niece, Karen (Dennis) Peterson. Mrs. Holger was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother-in-law, John (Lorene) Holger, and one sister-in-law, Agnes (George) Overland.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 20, at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday At Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Clifford Hatlevig
Clifford Hatlevig, 82, died Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born May 17, 1919, in Arendahl to Clarence and Marie (Dahle) Hatlevig. He was a lifelong farmer and member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. He will be remembered for his love of his ponies and his two dogs.
Mr. Hatlevig is survived by his three sisters, Ruth Arndt and Evelyn (Eugene) O’Brien, both of Winona, and Jean (Ike) Keliipio of Milwaukee, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Melvin; and one sister, Ester.
Funeral services were Dec. 4 at North Prairie Lutheran Church, the Rev. Karen Grandall officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Anna M. Mueller
Anna M. Mueller, 82, of rural Lewiston, died Monday (Dec. 3, 2001) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Sept. 25, 1919 in Peterson to Martin and Olga B. (Quickstad) Boyum. She graduated from Peterson High School.
Anna and Paul A. Mueller were married on Apr. 13, 1940 in Decorah, Iowa. The couple farmed near Fremont their entire married lives. Paul died Sept. 28, 1978.
Mrs. Mueller was a member of North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lanesboro, the Fremont Sunshine Club and was active in church and school activities. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, collecting antique dishes, and bowling. She was active in diagramming and registering their Holstein Herd. Mrs. Mueller enjoyed traveling, was an avid Twins and Vikings Fan and kept busy chauffeuring for and attending her grandchildren’s activities.
She is survived by her five children, Jack Mueller of Utica; Dave (Mary) Mueller of Lewiston; Jerry (Jean) Mueller of Houston; Patti (Art) Raak of St. Charles; and Dan (Diane) Mueller of St. Paul, 16 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Paul, a brother Lorin Boyum and a sister Myrth Deitz preceded her in death.
Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at North Prairie Lutheran Church with the Revs. James Peterson and Karen Grandall officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoff Funeral Home’s - Lewiston Chapel. They may also call one hour before services Friday at the church.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation.

Helen G. Bjorge
Helen G. Bjorge, 82, of Rushford, died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born on April 9, 1919, in Fillmore County to Jense and Gertrude (Pederson) Braaten.
She married Gynther Bjorge on June 11, 1935. He died this past September.
They had two children: Joanne and Virgil. When they married, they decided that their house was too quiet, so they started their many years of foster care. They had 14 foster children all together. They adopted Pamela and Rosie. They farmed together for many years.
Mrs. Bjorge also worked at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home as well as working in day care. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crafts and especially children. She was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Bjorge is survived by one son: Virgil (Nancy) Bjorge of Hokah; three daughters, Joanne (Hollis) Heiden, Pam (Les) Wangen, both of Rushford, and Rozella (Gregory) Wilkemeyer of St. Charles; three foster children: Ronnie, Joan and Roxie, who Gynther and Helen had still considered as their family; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer (Arlys) Johnson of North Dakota, and Harry (Ruth) Braaten of Nevada; two sisters, Gladine Tollefsrud of Arizona, and Rosella Nelson of North Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Dec. 13) at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Cook Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.
