Elmer M. LaFleur
A memorial service for Elmer M. LaFleur was held Dec. 10 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by Murphy-Johnson American Legion Post.
Mr. LaFleur, 79, of Rushford, died Thursday (Dec. 6, 2001) at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Elmer Maynard Alton LaFleur was born Oct. 9, 1922, on a farm southwest of Rushford, the son of Eli and Sophia (Wifall) LaFleur. He grew up there and attended South Rushford School. Mr. Lafleur served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a technical sergeant in the Army Engineers.
He married Virginia Fosness of Barton, N.D., at the Rushford Lutheran Church parsonage on Jan. 17, 1947. After his discharge from service he worked for Roverud Construction, Quarve and Anderson Construction, and Sterling Dairies of Austin. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church where he was an usher for many years and also taught Sunday School. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He also served on the city of Rushford Variance Board and Election Board, the North Star Telephone Board and the South Rushford School Board. He enjoyed making craft items and going to craft sales.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Maynard and Alan (Elizabeth), both of Rushford, and Curtis (Brenda) of Rochester; three daughters, Anita (Leonard) Blazejewski of Newfolden, Minn., Eileen (Mike) Barry, and Diane (Craig) Vogen, both of Rushford; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harley I. Larson
Harley I. Larson, 90, of Rushford, died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
He was born July 11, 1911, in Money Creek Township of Houston County to Hans and Ida (Omodt) Larson. He lived and farmed all of his life in the Rushford area until entering the nursing home in 1991. He married Jeannie Kalouner in August of 1956. She died in 1987.
Mr. Larson was an avid pilot who learned to fly in the 1940s. He was a member of the Flying Farmers Club. He and his twin brother Irving were instrumental in the making of the Rushford Airport. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rushford. Mr. Larson serviced on the Farmers Elevator board, of which he had been chairman at one time.
He was a member of the Rochester Shriners Clown Club. He enjoyed parades and entertaining children with balloon sculpturing. He was a Scottish Rite mason and a member of the Mystic Star Lodge 69 of Rushford, serving as master in the early 1960s.
Mr. Larson was a writer, and a had a weekly column in the Tri-County Record. He was a man of integrity who was a mentor and a hero to all who knew him, especially his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie and three brothers, Vernon, Irving and Ralph.
A memorial service was held Dec. 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Rushford, the Rev. Robert Drier officiated. Burial of the cremated body will take place at a later time.

Arnold S. Berge
Arnold S. Berge, 76, died Wednesday (Dec. 19, 2001) at the Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
Arnold Sheldon Berge was born May 26, 1925, in Dennison, Minn., to Amund and Esther (Strand) Berge.
Mr. Berge served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his military service he moved to Minneapolis where he worked as a forklift operator for a paper products company.
He moved to Rushford in 1987 and had been a resident of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home for the past four years. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW in Rushford.
Survivors include his sister, Elaine (Darrell) Erickson of Rushford; one niece; one nephew; great-nephews; and a great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Willis and Robert, and a sister - Marian.
Funeral services were Dec. 21 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, the Rev. Paul Johnson officiated. Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Larry G. Jertson
The funeral for Larry Jertson was Jan. 8 at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, the Rev. Karen Grandahl officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jertson, 50, of rural Lanesboro, a farmer, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Oct. 24, 1951, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Ole and Evelyn (Swiggum) Jertson. He attended Big Spring School and graduated from Peterson High School.
He was a collector of John Deere memorabilia and bought and restored old John Deere machinery. He was a lifetime member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church.
He is survived by an aunt, Almira Swiggum; an aunt-in-law, Myrtle Duffield; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Charles.

Jared Joseph Hammell
The funeral for Jared Joseph Hammell, 17, son of Bernard and June Hammell of Chatfield, was held Jan. 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield, the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield.
He is the nephew of Mike (Judy) and Chris (Laurie) Hammell of Rushford.
He died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) as the result of a one-car accident near Chatfield.
He was born July 24, 1984, in Rochester. An 11th-grader at Chosen Valley High School, he was active in wrestling, was a peer helper and a member of FFA. He worked for Hammell Equipment Inc. of Chatfield.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Lucas and Brandon, both at home; maternal grandmother Carol Gavin of Caledonia; and paternal grandparents Walter and Betty Hammell of Caledonia. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather.

Glen Hjalmer Eide
The funeral for Glen Hjalmer Eide was held Jan. 7 at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, the Rev. Karen Rossing Grandall officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Eide, 71, of Lanesboro, a retired farmer, died Friday (Jan. 4, 2002) at his home.
He was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Lanesboro. He graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1949.
He married Marjorie Northouse on Jan. 14, 1950, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro. They lived in rural Lanesboro until moving into the city one year ago.
He was past president of North Prairie Lutheran Church, a former member of the cemetery board, a former member of Farm Credit Services, a past Fillmore County Commissioner, a past member of the Lanesboro School Board and a DAC board member for 18 years. He enjoyed bowling and fishing and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gary and Keith (Charlene), both of Lanesboro, and Kevin (Sandy) of Mahtomedi, Minn.; two daughters, Gayle Burdick of Rochester and Beth (Ryan) Vitse of Peterson; 15 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two step-granddaughters; two sisters, Lois Ulrich of Rushford and Corrine (Len) Speltz of Palos Verdes, Calif.; a special caregiver, Jenny McGrath of Dungarvan, Ireland.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
Memorials are suggested to ALS or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Leonard D. Carlson
Leonard D. Carlson, 69, of Winona, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Gundersen Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., from complications due to cancer.
He was born March 28, 1932, in La Crosse, Wis., to Alfred and Alice (Nerison) Carlson. On July 24, 1954, he married Darlene Mae Leslie at Money Creek Methodist Church.
He graduated from Winona Senior High School and Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis. He was employed with Minnesota DOT for 33 years as a senior engineer technician. He was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona; AFSCME 1309 Union and was also a delegate; and the Rod & Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Winona; two daughters, Darcey (Dave) Wera of Prior Lake and Janelle (Jim) Larson of Wauwatosa, Wis.; four grandchildren; two brothers, John (JoAnn) Carlson of Caledonia, and Kenneth Carlson of Caledonia; two sisters, Lyla (Gerald) Dragvold of Spring Grove, and Shirley Skree of Caledonia; mother-in-law, Winifred Leslie of Winona; sister-in-law, Kay (Verlyn) Raaen of Prior Lake, and a brother-in-law, Darrell Leslie of St. Paul.
Funeral services were Mar. 6 at McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona, the Rev. Shirley Duncanson officiated. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

William R. ‘Bill’ Peterson
William R. “Bill” Peterson, 86, of Houston, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
He was born on March 5, 1916, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Paul and Martha (Humble) Peterson. Bill was raised on the family farm near Thief River Falls and graduated from Thief River Falls High School.
As a young man, Bill moved to Winona to work. It was then that he met Candace Torgerson. He and Candace were married on November 25, 1940.
He farmed for many years in the Houston area. Following his retirement in 1978, Bill took up the hobby of clock making. Bill was a volunteer at the A.B.L.E. Group Home in Houston as well as being a volunteer for driving those who needed a ride to their doctor appointments. Bill was a very active member of the Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston, where he especially enjoyed being active in singing for the choir and quartet. Bill also worked for many years with the Gideons organization.
He is survived by two sons: Ron (Deanna) Peterson and Dan (Debbie) Peterson both of Houston; two daughters: Marlene (Rich) Sather of Houston, and Carol (Dave) Hilken of Winona, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two grandchildren, Ricky and Megan, seven brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were March 9 at the Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston, the Rev. Kris Fahey officiated. Burial was at the Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Houston.

Elizabeth A. Hegland
Elizabeth A. Hegland, 62, of rural Peterson, died Monday (March 11, 2002) at her home.
Born on May 7, 1939, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Arvid and Selma (Humble) Kjos, she grew up in the Peterson area and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1957. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics in 1961.
She married Roger Hegland on September 1, 1962, at North Prairie Lutheran Church. They lived at the same farm in rural Peterson all of their married lives.
Mrs. Hegland was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ruth Circle and W.E.L.C.A. group. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in Rushford.
Mrs. Hegland enjoyed going to her sons’ cattle shows and F.F.A. activities. Her interests included flowers, sewing, traveling, and especially spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; her father, Arvid Kjos of Peterson; three sons: Brian (Renee) Hegland of Bakersfield, Calif., Darin (Nancy) Hegland of Northfield, and Martin (Shari) Hegland of Algona, Iowa; and one granddaughter.
Her mother and two grandchildren preceded Elizabeth in death.
The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at the North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro with the Rev. Karen Grandall officiating.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Following the funeral service, her body will be cremated. Burial of her cremated body will be in the church cemetery on a later date.
