Sara Jo VanGundy
Sara Jo VanGundy, 21, of Houston, died Friday (Mar. 15, 2002) at The Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., following an asthma attack.
She was born on May 28, 1980, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Dennis and Janet (Moberly) Van Gundy. She lived in Waterloo until shortly after the death of her mother in 1984, when she and her father moved to Houston.
She graduated from Houston High School in 1998, where she enjoyed participating in sports and cheerleading. Her interests also included horseback riding, camping, the outdoors, and spending time with her friends and family. Sara especially enjoyed being with the most important person in her life, her seven-month-old son, Deven.
She worked at various companies in the area, most recently at WinCraft in Winona.
Sara is survived by her son, Deven; father, Dennis (Cindy) VanGundy of Houston; paternal grandparents, Harold and Delores VanGundy of Houston; maternal grandmother, Rose Moberly of Waterloo, Iowa; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her mother; grandfather, Henry Moberly; and uncle, Gary VanGundy, preceded Sara in death.
Funeral services were Mar. 19 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiated. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery.
The family prefers memorials to Sara’s son, Deven.

Rev. Walter F. Lieder
The Rev. Walter F. Lieder, 92, of Winona, died Sunday (Mar. 31, 2002) at Sauer Memorial Home.
He was born April 26, 1909, in Detroit, Mich., the seventh son of Henry and Mary Lieder.
He was a graduate of Northwestern High School and Concordia College. He enrolled at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and graduated in 1931.
He married Dorothy Schave on June 29, 1935 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyandotte, Mich. He served many churches through the years. Upon his retirement in 1978, he moved to Winona, where he served several years as visitation pastor at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. He also served as vacancy pastor at several parishes in the Southern Minnesota District.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carol (Loren) Krueger of Minnetonka; four sons, David (Patricia) of Cottonwood, Ariz., Charles (Elaine) of Red Wing, Paul (Merlene) of Mahtomedi, and Walter John (Jean) of Bloomington, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and six brothers.
Funeral services were April 3 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. Timothy Dost officiated. Interment was at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Lewiston.
Memorials may be made to the Walter Lieder Scholarship Fund at St. Martin’s Lutheran School, the Student Aid Fund of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, or Sauer Memorial Home.

Ordell Gary Hanson
Funeral services will be held for Ordell Gary Hanson at Grace Lutheran Church at Peterson on Friday, April 5, at 2 p.m. Visitation at the church from 12:30 until time of service.
Hanson, 63, died Monday (April 1, 2002) at Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis. He lived in Wadena.

Manvel L. Olness
Manvel L. Olness, 93, of Rushford and formerly of St. Charles, Minn., died Sunday (April 7, 2002) at Winona Community Memorial Hospital in Winona, Minn.
He was born on August 3, 1908, in Arendahl Township of Fillmore County to John L. and Bertha (Hermanson) Olness. He attended Peterson School until staying home to work on the family farm.
Mr. Olness married Margaret Johnson on January 2, 1932. They farmed in Saratoga Township, south of St. Charles for many years. They retired in St. Charles in 1972. Mrs. Olness died in 1987.
He was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro. He enjoyed fishing carpentry and upholstery work. He is survived by one son: Curtis (Elsie) Olness of San Angelo, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Berdine Highum, Olive (Palmer) Peterson, and Evelyn (Ron) Bremseth all of Rushford.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son; Dale; three brothers: Maynard, Conrad, and Joseph.
Funeral services were Apr. 10 at the North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, the Rev. Karen Grandall officiated. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.

Pamela Kay (Zacher) Salis
Pamela Kay (Zacher) Salis, 38, of Waukon and formerly of Houston, Minn., died Wednesday (April 10, 2002) at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa.
She was born on February 15, 1964, in Milwaukee, Wis, to Donald and Beverly (Simpson) Zacher. She moved with her family as a baby to Houston, and graduated from Houston High School. She had also lived in Rushford Minn., and Hokah, Minn.
In November of 2001, Pamela married Timothy Salis in Waukon, Iowa, where she resided until the time of her death. She loved spending as much time as possible with her husband and children.
Pamela is survived by her husband, Timothy; father, Donald Lacher of Houston, Minn.; six children: Joshua, Eric, James, Alyssia, Melina, and Annastasia; two brothers, James Zacher of Houston, Minn. and Gerald Zacher of Whitesburg, Tenn.; and one sister, Christine Draper of Fountain City, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly, and her grandparents.
Funeral services were Apr. 15 at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel in Houston. The Rev. Lane Zaffke officiated. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.

Ordell Gary Hanson
The funeral for Ordell Gary Hanson was held Apr. 5 at Grace Lutheran Church at Peterson. Burial was in the West Grace cemetery.
Ordell Gary, 63, of Wadena, died Monday (April 1, 2002) at Fairview-University Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Oct. 5, 1938 in LaCrosse, Wis. He grew up in the Peterson area and graduated from Peterson High School. He and Luanne Rude of Peterson were married Feb 14, 1959 in Peterson.
After graduating from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1960, he worked in sales and marketing in the health care industry. In 1977, the family moved to a farm at Wadena where he also worked in the health care division of Homecrest Industries in Wadena. He enjoyed wildlife, reading and genealogy research.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Brian (Joni) of St. Cloud, Brad (Emily) of Bloomington; a daughter, Laurie (Wayne) Klitzke of Park Rapids; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren; a brother, Eugene (Bernice) of Peterson; and three sisters; Clarice (Robert) Highum of Rushford, Betty Rasmussen of Winona and Olive (Don) Leland of Alexandria.

Dale E. O’Bieglo
Dale E. O’Bieglo, 41, of Mabel, died Thursday (Apr. 18, 2002) at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born Mar. 5, 1961, in Whitehall, Wis., to Angeline Sonsalla. He attended grade school in Arcadia, Wis., and graduated from Rushford High School in 1980. He attended the Winona VoTech and then lived in Milwaukee for a short time before moving to the Mabel area in 1984. On Apr. 8, 1989, he married Lisa Fossum in Mabel. He farmed with his brother until 1991 when he went to work for HyView Feed where he was working until recently. He enjoyed playing co-ed softball and coaching the Girl Scout soccer program.
Mr. O’Bieglo is survived by his wife Lisa and two children, Kayla and Collin, of Mabel; four sisters, Evadine (Maynard) Eide of Rushford, Mary (Richard) Waniorek of West Alice, Wis., Phyllis Moonen of Milwaukee, and Caroline Schulze of Winona; two brothers, Roger of Milwaukee, and Conrad “Butch” (Donna) of Caledonia; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, a sister and a brother.
Funeral services were Apr. 23 at Mabel First Lutheran Church, the Revs. Allen Hermeier and Gene Hermeier co-officiated. Burial was in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery.

Donald Willis Lueth
Donald Willis Lueth, 91, of LaCrosse died Monday (Apr. 22, 2002) at Bethany Riverside Nursing Facility.
He was born Jan. 6, 1911, in LaCrosse to Clinton and Mattie (Sandbergen) Lueth. He was a lifetime resident of LaCrosse and never desired to live elsewhere. He was a 1929 graduate of Logan High School.
On June 6, 1938, he married Cora Bartlett Floe of Peterson. They were wed 61 years before her death in 1999. They lived a simple life enjoying visits from and traveling to see family and friends.
Mr. Lueth was employed as a milkman for many years working for Modern Dairy, Consolidated Dairy and Borden’s. He enjoyed meeting and talking with people. At the time of his retirement he was working as a grocery clerk for Super Value.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, United Food and Commercial Worker’s Union, and, when it existed, the Odd Fellow’s Lodge.
Survivors include his son Wallace (Anne) Floe, Freeport, Ill.; five granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Clinton (Sarah) Lueth, Houston, Tex.; many nieces and nephews; special friends, the Dick Morgan Family and his caregivers at Bethany Riverside.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Henry Lueth, sisters Mabel Mohlzan and Lucille Gilles, and nephews David Lueth and Doug Lueth.
Funeral services will be today at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson, LaCrosse. Rev. James Pfannensteil will officiate with entombment to follow at Gardens of Peace Mausoleum.

Esther H. Kuhlmann
Esther H. Kuhlmann, 82, of Rochester died of cancer April 19, 2002, at her home.
Esther Harriet Fleischfresser was born July 14, 1919, in Winona. She married Darwin Kuhlmann on Sept. 1, 1941; he preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1980.
She was born and raised in Winona. She worked for WinCraft Manufacturing for many years. Her husband was a barber.
She was a Pocahontas in the Redman Club of Winona.
Survivors include two children, Sharon (Frank) Ellenz of Winona and Debra (Dean) McConochie of Rochester; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, LuAnn Wenzel of Lewiston, and Bernice (Bob) Danzeisen of Rosemount.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin, and one son.
There was a memorial service held Apr. 22 at Northgate Plaza in Rochester. A memorial mass was held Apr. 23 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Winona. Her cremated body will be buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona.

Richard D. Gerard
Richard D. Gerard, 67, of Eugene, Oregon, and formerly of the Mabel and Spring Grove areas, died Wednesday (April 17, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Gerard was born April 15, 1935, in Lanesboro, to Phillip and Hazel (Vickerman) Gerard. He attended school in Lanesboro. On November 20, 1954, he married Roggie Peterson in Preston. They were later divorced. He lived and worked as a logger in Washington until 1976 when he moved to Spring Grove. In 1980 he married Carrie Brown in Spring Grove. She later passed away in 1993. He lived in Spring Grove until 1982 when he returned to Oregon where he retired. On Nov. 19, 2000, he married Melodee Lee in Eugene. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska.
Mr. Gerard is survived by his wife Melodee of Eugene; a daughter Rita (James) Yonts of Rushford; four sons Ron (Wendy) of LaPine, Oregon, Rick (Lorie) of Dakota, Russell (Mary Lou) of Spring Grove, and Robin (Lisa) of Sonora, Calif; a step-son Marvin Brown of Craig, Alaska; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milton (Cora) of Newburg, Minn., and Robert of Olympia, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife Carrie; a sister Phyllis Sorenson; and two brothers Charlie and Eldred.
Funeral services will be today at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, with Steven Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Henry Cemetery in rural Canton. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. before the service at the funeral home in Mabel.
