Richard ‘Dick’ A. Mays
Richard “Dick” A. Mays, 76, of Rushford, died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Home in Rushford.
He was born on Oct. 4, 1924, in Hastings, Neb., to Claude and Anna (Burnham) Mays. He moved with his family at age three to St. James, Minn. Mr. Mays graduated from St. James High School in 1942. He farmed with his father for many years.
He was united in marriage with Doris Peterson on Aug. 31, 1947, in Westbrook, Minn. They moved to Westport, Minn., in 1960 and in 1967 they moved to Glenwood, farming in both areas. In 1974 the couple moved to Alexandria where Mr. Mays worked in real estate. They moved to Rushford in 1994.
Mr. Mays suffered from a stroke in 1995 and since that time has been at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushford. Mr. Mays was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He enjoyed participating in tractor pulls, refinishing old furniture, and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Doris; two sons, Dale (Sylvia) Mays of Prior Lake and Terry (Janel) Mays of Rochester; one daughter, Debra (John) Bruihler of Rushford; five grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth (Carol) Mays of St. James, Bob (Carol) Mays of Rochester, and Darrell (Lenore) Mays of Owatonna; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Gary.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at First Presbyterian Church in Rushford, with the Rev. Robert Drier officiating. Burial will be 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Cook Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.

Bertram Glenna
Bertram Glenna, 69, of Winona, died Sunday (Nov. 25, 2001) at his home in the Valley View Tower.
He was born on May 26, 1932, in Peterson to Benny and Mary (Thorud) Glenna.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Glenna was a disabled veteran who enjoyed working with and spending time with his family.
He is survived by one brother: Richard (Marion) Glenna of Lanesboro; three sisters: Ovedia Ellefson of Rushford, Norma Haslerud of Roseau, and Muriel (Carlton) Thomson of Austin; and also many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Funeral services will be today (Nov. 29) at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Orvis Carrol Paulson
Orvis Carrol Paulson, 60, died suddenly of a heart attack on Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at his home in St. Louis Park, Minn.
Orvis Carrol Paulson was born on Nov. 24, 1940, to Elvin Ingval Paulson and Emily Gilbertson paulson in Rushford. His childhood was spent on a farm in rural Peterson (Arendahl). He was baptized and confirmed in the Arendahl Lutheran Church. He attended Wraalstad country school for eight years and Peterson High School for four years graduating in 1958. He attended The Lutheran Bible Institute.
He farmed for some years on the family farm near Houston and joined the U.S. Army in 1963 and served in Germany in the Military Police after discharge in 1965. He attended Minneapolis Business College and worked as an insurance adjuster later forming his own company Casualty Property Associates and also worked for General Security Services Corp.
Mr. Paulson was married to Nancy Dummer in St. Louis Park on April 27, 1968. They were later divorced. On March 27, 1999, he was married to Charlene Anderson in Eden Prairie.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Paulson; sons, Brian (Andria) and Kevin (Callie); daughter, Jodi; four grandchildren; stepsons, Keith and Craig VanDerSchaegen; brothers, Gordon and Dennis, Houston; sisters, Sylvia Markegard, Peterson, and Edith Syftestad, Richland Center, Wis.; uncle; aunts; nephew; and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Oct. 4 at Wooddale Church, Eden Prairie. Interment was at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Tammy Hovland
Tammy Hovland, 41, of Oakland, Oregon, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) of cancer. She was born Oct. 5, 1960. She is survived by her husband, Davis Hovland; a step-daughter Nicola; a sister in Texas; and father- and mother-in-law, Bert and Helen Hovland of Rushford.

Silas A. Holland
Silas A. Holland, 83, of Peterson, died Friday (Oct. 12, 2001) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
He was born June 23, 1918, in Sebeka, Minn., to Elmer and Inger (Agrimson) Holland. He grew up and attended school in Sebeka.
Mr. Holland moved to rural Lanesboro in the early 1940s where he farmed. He married Lillian Kvamme on Oct. 6, 1945, in Hawley, Minn. In 1951, the couple moved to Forrest City, Iowa. At that time Mr. Holland started in the trucking business. He and Mrs. Holland moved back to the Lanesboro and Peterson area in 1957, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He retired from truck driving this past June.
Mr. Holland was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Peterson. He had a love for hunting, horses, his work, and his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; four sons: Ellsworth (Karla) Holland of Rushford, Luther (Karen) Holland of Winona, David (Dixie) Holland of Winona, and Daniel (Leanne) Holland of Bloomington Prairie; one daughter: Julie (Gerhard Heier) Franzen of Spring Grove; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice (William) Swanberg of Golden Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Joshua Holland; one brother, Amos; and two sisters, Eleanor and Evangeline.
Funeral services were Oct. 16 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson, the Rev. Paul Johnson officiated. Burial was in the Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery in rural Peterson.

Beulah E. Smith
Beulah E. Smith, 87, of Houston, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Trempealeau County, to Webster and Grace (Wilbur) Calkins. She moved to New Hartford Township of Winona County as a child. She lived in the Houston area for most of her life and married Guy Smith on Sept. 14, 1931.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed gardening, housework, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Nellie (Richard) Boldt of Houston; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services were Oct. 16 at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel, Rev. Kris Fahey officiated. Burial was in the Hiler Cemetery in Nodine, Minn.

Hazel Peterson Buckbee
Hazel Peterson Buckbee, 92, of Houston, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born on July 9, 1909, in Alexander, N.D., to Paul and Edith (Meyers) Lanz. She was raised in North Dakota and came to Minnesota at age 19, where she met Abraham Peterson. They were married in 1930. Mr. Peterson died in 1954. She then married Ira Buckbee in 1955. He died in 1995.
Mrs. Buckbee lived most of her life in Storer Valley. She moved to Houston in 1980. Her interests included sewing, gardening, baking and spending time with her family.
She is survived by one son, John (Helen) Peterson of Stoddard, Wis.; two daughters, Edith Brekke of Rushford and Genevieve (Clyde) Stanfield of Willington, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Grayce Sivertsen of Coupeville, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands; one infant son, Gene; one daughter, Eunice Johnson; one grandson, Steven Johnson; one-great-grandson, Michael Murphy; five brothers, William, Arthur, Harry, Harold and Robert; two sisters, Ruby Morey and Wilma Nelson.
Funeral services were Oct. 19 at Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston, the Rev. Kris Fahey officiated. Burial was in the Loretta Cemetery in rural Houston.

Josephine C. ’Toots’ Halverson
Josephine C. “Toots” Halverson, 89, of Houston, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born on April 3, 1912, in Houston to Christine and Josephine (Jacobson) Virock. She was raised in Houston. She married Ralph Halverson on June 27, 1937, in Houston.
They lived in Rushford for six years and then moved back to Houston. He died in January of 1965.
Mrs. Halverson worked in housekeeping at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. She had a great love for her family, her friends, and her pets.
Mrs. Halverson is survived by two sons: Roger (Sharon) Halverson of Boscobel, Wis., and Richard Halverson and his fiance Diane Soller of LaCrosse, Wis.; two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers: Orton, Deloine, Ruggie and Kenneth Virock.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery in Rushford.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Valley View Nursing Home or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.

Archie L. Anderson
Archie L. Anderson, 89, of Minneapolis died Oct. 12, 2001.
He was born to Hans and Cora (Markegard) Anderson, rural Peterson, on Sept. 8, 1912.
He is survived by his wife, Erma; children, Kathleen Lebra, Keith Anderson and Karla Anderson; three grandchildren including Ronnie Rislove of Rushford; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Maurice; sisters, Hazel Petersen and Bernice McNally; several nieces and nephews in the Rushford area.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Anderson; a step-son, Ronald Petersen; four brothers, Harris, Kermit, Russell and Robert; and one sister, Clarice.
Memorial services were held at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in Minneapolis with interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Millie Peterson
Millie Peterson, 91, of Soldiers Grove, Wis., passed away on Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.
She was born Feb. 8, 1910, in the Town of Kickapoo, Vernon County, to Melvin and Jenny (Jones) Spurrier. She married Clarence Peterson on July 9, 1929, in Winona. He passed away on Mar. 1, 2001.
For the first few years of their marriage, they worked at the Kickapoo Development Company Farm near Gays Mills. He also served as a truck driver for the apple orchards of the farm. In the late 1930s they began farming in Crawford County. They retired in 1968 and lived in Sugar Grove. In 1979, they moved to Readstown. They had a houseboat on the Mississippi River and enjoyed fishing.
She is survived by one son: Arlan of Soldiers Grove; two daughters, Arlene (George) Alexander of Soldiers Grove, and Kay (Allen) Howe of Rushford; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Roger, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, five sisters and her parents.
Funeral services were Jan. 5 at Sime Funeral Home in Readstown. Pastor Joe Adams officiated. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Sugar Grove, Wis.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
