Cordella Evelyn
Maland Benson
Cordella Benson, 91, of Peterson, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born Sept. 26, 1908, to Andrew and Martha (Swiggum) Maland. She graduated from Peterson High School and attended Waldorf College and Winona State Teachers College, where she received her degree. She taught at Big Springs Country School and at Peterson Public Schools. She married Clifford Benson in 1938 and lived her entire life in Peterson.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson, WELCA and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son, Paul (Lorraine) Benson of Peterson; daughter, Joan (William) Kosters, of Cresco, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Jodi (Alan) Armstrong, Brandon Benson, Kimberley Kosters and Katie Kosters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and one sister.
The funeral service was held August, 19, at Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson with the Rev. Frank Kerkemeyer officiating. Burial was in the West Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Peterson.

Edythe A. Iverson
Edythe A. Iverson, 84, of Rushford, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born on March 27, 1916, in Rushford, to Conrad and Hjalma (Gunderson) Iverson.
She graduated from Rushford High School. After graduation, she moved to St. Paul, where she began work for the State Printer. Edythe then worked for North Central Broadcasting. She worked as a legal secretary at Briggs and Mogan Law Office in St. Paul, serving as Mr. Morton’s secretary for 39 years. In 1981, Edythe retired and moved back to Rushford.
She was a very kindhearted person who loved people. Edythe’s interests included golf, music, reading and her dog, Buttons.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Rushford.
Edythe is survived by two brothers, Lyle (Betsy) Iverson and Richard (Mairine) Iverson, both of Modesto, Calif.; one sister, Betty (Rees) Johnson of Rushford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Eleanor Colby; and one brother, Robert Iverson.
The funeral services were held Aug. 19, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rushford, the Rev. Lawrence J. Green officiated. Burial was at the Rushford Oak Grove Cemetery.

Norman A. Eide
Norman A. Eide, 66, of 827 E. Ninth St., Winona, died on Sunday, August 13, 2000, at the Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born on September 2, 1933, in Winona County, to Julian and Agnus Jonsgaard Eide. He married Jean Brabbit on October 27, 1956, at North Prairie Lutheran Church. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church.
He worked at Gorman Foundary prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Steven Eide, Winona; daughters, Rita (Dennis) Frahm, Winona; Norma Jean (John) Schriever, Bay City, Wisconsin; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Alvin Eide, Rushford; Lawrence (Lila) Eide, Winona; Milton (Bette) Eide, Rushford; Ronald (Janette) Eide, Rushford; Elmer (Viola) Eide, Winona; Clifford (Rosemary) Eide, Rushford; Maynard (Eva) Eide, Rushford; and a sister Leone (Darrel) Block, Winona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Ovedia.
Funeral services were held Aug. 16, at the Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Roger Knudson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Casketbearers were John Schriever, Dennis Frahm, Mike Kohner, Scott Williams, Darien Heimermann and Randy Williams.

Gynther Bjorge
Gynther Bjorge, 87, of Rushford died Sunday, (Sept. 2, 2001) at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
Mr. Bjorge was born May 27, 1914, near Homestead, N.D., to Olav and Issabella (Ringsrud) Bjorge. He married Helen Braaten June 11, 1935. They had two children, Joanne and Virgil.
When they married, the couple decided that their house was too quiet, so they started their many years of foster care. They had 14 foster children all together. They adopted Pamela and Rosie.
Mr. Bjorge farmed for many years, later working for Ace Telephone. In his retirement, he loved his garden, roses, children and visiting with friends and family. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Virgil (Nancy) Bjorge of Hokah; three daughters, Joanne (Hollis) Heiden of Rushford, Pam (Les) Wangen of Rushford, and Rozella (Gregory) Wilkemeyer of St. Charles; three foster children, Ronnie, Joan and Roxie, who Gynther and Helen still consider as their family; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Bjorge of Texas and Robert (Jane) Bjorge of Greenfield, Wis.; two sisters, Betty Bjorge of LaCrescent and Hazel (Swanee) Preston of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Funeral services will be today (Sept. 6) at the Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. David G. Watson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call today from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the Rushford Lutheran Church or to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.

Phyllis L. Johnson
Phyllis L. Johnson, 77, of rural Lanesboro, died August 16, 2001, at Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following a two-week illness.
Phyllis L. Wangen was born July 5, 1924, in Lanesboro. On Nov. 25, 1947, she married LaVerne Johnson in Lanesboro.
A lifetime resident of rural Lanesboro, she was employed by Rushford Bank in Rushford, Harmony Health Care Center, Fillmore Place in Preston and as a home health care aide in Fillmore County. She was a member of Highland Lutheran Church, deaconess of the church council, publicity chairman of the Root River Lutheran Conference Committee, member of Eunice Circle and Lanesboro American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband; one brother, Donald (Dolores) of Lansboro; and one sister, Alice Johnson of Dodge Center. She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Funeral services were Aug. 21 at Highland Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dean Johnson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

David Carl Hardy
David Carl Hardy, 53, died on Monday (Sept. 3, 2001) due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
David Carl was born on March 19, 1948, in Detroit, Mich., to Frank Willis, Jr. and Vivian Louis (Sholz) Hardy.
He graduated from Berkley High School, Berkley, Mich., in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, he moved to Rushford, where he was currently employed at TRW of Rushford.
He is survived by three children: two daughters, Lynn (David) Liedel of Madison Heights, Mich., and Kimberly Hardy of Berkley, Mich., and a son Benjamin Hardy of Berkley; his mother, Vivian, Hardy of Winona; a brother, Rick (Kim) Hardy, of Pickwick; his girlfriend, Polly Drazkowski, of Winona; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Willis Hardy, Jr., and a brother, Dan.
Services were Sept. 7 at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, the Rev. Timothy Dost officiated.

Dorothy B. Berg
Dorothy B. Berg, 87, of Winona, died peacefully with her family at her side Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at Lake Winona Manor.
She was born Mar. 18, 1914, near Arendahl, rural Peterson, to Andrias and Emma (Quickstad) Boyum.
She married Edwin H. Berg April 20, 1940, at Central Lutheran Church, Winona, where she was still an active member. For 23 years She was employed at J.R. Watkins Company. She then worked for 13 years in the food service for Winona School District 861.
Mrs. Berg is survived by her husband, Edwin, of Winona; daughter, Laurel (Timothy) Laib of Winona; two granddaughters; a sister, Myrtle Fenney of the Good Shepherd Home, Rushford; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services were Sept. 14 at Central Lutheran Church, the Revs. Wade E. Davick and Michelle Rern officiated.

Ruth E. Erickson
The funeral for Ruth Erickson was Sept. 14 at Zumbro Lutheran Church Memorial Chapel in Rochester, the Rev. Wayne F. Vogt officiated. Burial was at Highland Prairie Cemetery.
Mrs. Erickson, 93, of Lake City, a former Rochester and Rushford homemaker, died Tuesday at Lake City Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. She entered the nursing home in 1997.
Ruth Evelyn Dahle was born May 2, 1908, in Rushford. On May 13, 1927, she married Clarence B. Erickson in Rushford, and they farmed in the Rushford area. They moved to Rochester in 1955; her husband was a custodian at Mayo Clinic until his retirement. After Mr. Erickson’s death Jan. 21, 1997, Mrs. Erickson moved to Lake City. She was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church and its circle, and enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Wilda (Emery) Prigge of Lake City; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and three sisters.

Paula Jane Gappa Ernster
Paula Jane Gappa Ernster, 55, of Winona, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2001) at her home.
She was born in Winona Jan. 1, 1946, to Irvin and Wilma (Carlson) Gappa.
She is a graduate of Cathedral Grade School and a 1964 graduate of Cotter High School. She earned a bachelor of science from Winona State University and did graduate work at the University of Minnesota.
She was an elementary teacher, having taught in several districts around Minnesota. From 1992 to 1998 she was an instructor in the Head Start Program in Minneapolis, then from 1998 to 2000 in English as a Second Language at Cedar Riverside in Minneapolis.
She is survived by a son, Matthew L. of Minneapolis; a daughter, Michele “Miki” (Brian) Loosbrock, Wilmont, Minn.; one grandson; a brother, Jeff Gappa of Rushford; sisters, Judith Gappa, Irvine, Calif., Sara Sue (Chester Kluzik, and Zoe Ann (Rick) Podjaski, both of Winona; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were Sept. 15 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church.
