Robert Eugene Pearson
Robert Eugene Pearson, 50, of 35 Erie Lane, Goodview, died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at his home.
He was born June 8, 1951, in Winona and has been a lifelong Winona resident. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class.
He married Elaine C. Andring May 17, 1980, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona.
Mr. Pearson worked for six years as a laborer for Lester Builders, then for 18 years as a machinist at Brom Foundry. From there, he went to RTP as a machinist for six months, retiring due to disability.
He loved fishing, Viking football and ocean cruising.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; brothers, Wayne (Carol) Pearson of Homer, and Daniel Pearson of Winona; sisters, Sharon (Larry) Kanz of Virginia Beach, Va., Marilyn (David) Bronk of Stockton, and Jean (Wayne) Nielsen of Rushford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today (Nov. 8) at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, the Rev. Msgr. Roy Literski officiating.
Members of American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct a flag presentation after the religious ceremony.

Gertrude E. Newland
Gertrude E. Newland, 85, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at Lake Winona Manor.
She was born Dec. 9, 1915, in Hart Township, Winona County, to Herman and Meta Bergman Runge.
She married Robert F. Newland on June 21, 1939. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1981.
Mrs. Newland farmed with her husband in Pleasant Hill Township. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid and Bible study group.
She is survived by a son, Charles (Mae) Newland of Joliet, Ill.; daughters, Roberta (Willard) Warnken, Irene (Dennis) Rislove and Mary Newland, all of Winona; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Milda (Laurence) Laumb, and Florence Runge of Rushford.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Tveten.
Funeral services were Nov. 3 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ridgeway, the Rev. David Pries officiated. Burial was in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway.
Memorials may be directed to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Robert L. ‘Pat’ Burke
Robert L. ‘Pat’ Burke, 82, a retired Marine Corps captain and a former purchasing agent with Melpar E-Systems, died of lung cancer July 31, 2001, at the Hospice of Northern Virginia. He lived in Vienna, Va.
Mr. Burke was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Rushford to Mike and Katherine (Jensen) Burke.
Me married Vesta Leathery of Washington D.C. March 3, 1956.
Mr. Burke, who came to the Washington area in 1962, served 23 years in the Corps before retiring from active duty in 1962. He worked for Melpar E-Systems until retiring a second time in 1984.
The Minnesota native was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941. He served in the Pacific during World War II and in Korea during the conflict there.
He was commissioned during the Korean War and later served as a supply officer. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California when he retired.
He had been a member of the International Country Club since 1963.
Memorial services were held Aug. 9 at the Fort Myer Chapel. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery. Among those attending the memorial service were Lois Larson of Winona, Lucille Burke, Luanne Dvorak and Nancy Snyder of Rushford.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Vesta Leathery Burke, a son, Michael E., both of Vinenna; a daughter, Sandy Burke Nunnally of Ashland, Va.; and a sister, Lois Larson of Winona.

Esther I. Johnson
Esther I. Johnson, 80, died Wednesday (April 8, 2001) at her home in Peterson.
Esther Irene Johnson was born April 9, 1921, in Peterson to Christ and Ella (Koljord) Johnson.
She lived in Minneapolis and worked for Dayton's for 37 years. Upon retirement she moved back to the home farm in the later 1980s. She was a member of North Prairie Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.
Survivors include: one sister, Cora Johnson, of Peterson; two brothers, Obert Johnson of Peterson and Norman (Hellen) Johnson of Winona; several cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents.
Funeral services were April 13 at North Prairie Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Frandal officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Yong Hui Boutelle
The funeral for Yong Hui Boutelle was Aug. 20 at United Methodist Church in Lanesboro, the Rev. Marilyn Loken officiated. Burial was in the Lanesboro Cemetery.
Mrs. Boutelle, 50, of Lanesboro, died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester following a lengthy illness. She had been in the hospital since Aug. 6.
She was born Nov. 24, 1950, in Seoul, South Korea. On Aug. 28, 1975, she married Gary Boutelle in Seoul. The couple lived at Fort Dix in New Jersey and Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo., before moving to Rochester, where they lived for six years They then moved to Peterson, where they lived for 10 years, and for the last five years have lived in Lanesboro. Mr. Boutelle is employed by the Rochester post office. Mrs. Boutelle worked for the Kahler Corp. in Rochester, Rush Products in Rushford and the post office in Lanesboro. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lanesboro and Korean Bible Study Group in Rochester.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Robert (Amy) of Peterson; a daughter, Jennifer Boutelle of Rochester; three grandchildren; and a sister in South Korea.
Her parents preceded her in death.

Doris Hovland Miltz
Doris Miltz, 74, died Aug. 4, 2001, after a long illness.
She was born to George and Laura Hovland on Jan. 21, 1927. She attended and graduated from Rushford School.
She was married to Merwyn Miltz 56 years ago and they lived in Yuma, Ariz., for about 40 years.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Dwylia Hamilton; two sons, Donald in Phoenix, Ariz., Darwyn (Connie) in Arkansas; three grandsons; three brothers, Bert of Rushford, Lloyd of Denver, Colo., and Raymond of Mack, Colo.; two sisters, Marion Colbenson of Rochester and Evelyn (Hugh) Gleason of Saratoga, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Earl (Lois) of Bloomington.
The funeral was Aug. 9 at Johnson Mortuary Chapel in Yuma, Ariz.

Virginia B. Horsnell
Virginia B. Horsnell, 70, of Winona, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at her home.
She was born Aug. 1, 1931, in Waumandee, Wis., to Frank and Josephine (Jaskola) Grulkowski.
She married Douglas C. Horsnell Jr. on July 14, 1973, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona.
Mrs. Horsnell was employed at Hal Leonard Publishing Co. for 16 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.
Survivors include her loving husband, Douglas of Winona; two daughters, Mary (John) Kahoun of Rushford, and Ann (Beaj) Kujak of Winona; three sons, Stephen (Billie) Rudnik and James Rudnik, both of Winona, and Robert Rudnik of Coon Rapids; two step-daughters, Lisa (Marty) Johnson of Horicon, Wis., and Andrea (Dave) Ellings of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Roman Grulkowski of Cochrane, Wis., and Emil (Josephine) Grulkowski of Winona; and five sisters, Mary Steihl of Winona, Frances Rotering of Arcadia, Wis., Antoinette (George) Baures of Winona, Rose Ann (Robert) Berberich of Circle Pines, and Margaret (Alfred) Schlesser of Arcadia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Gertrude Passe; two infant brothers; and two infant sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 27 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with preliminary services at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiated.
Pallbearers were Bill Schlesser, Frank Baures, George Baures, Jeff Hundt, Ron Passe and Larry Stiehl.

Jesse Philip Carrier
Jesse Philip Carrier, 27, of Rushmore, died Friday (July 6, 2001) in Worthington Township as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born Nov. 24, 1973, in Winona, to Jeffrey and Peggy (DeBates) Carrier.
He graduated from Adrian High School, Worthington Community, and attended Southwest State University.
He married Rhonda Dammer in 1994. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Adrian.
Mr. Carrier is survived by is wife, Rhonda; four children; parents, Jeffrey and Peggy Carrier; paternal grandfather, Charles Carrier, Houston; maternal grandfather, Edward (Dianne) DeBates, Sioux Falls, SD; maternal grandmother, Esther DeBates, Marshall. Aunts and uncles include: from Rushford, Ron and Kathy Carrier, Jerry and Barb Laumb, Marlin and Mary Ann Carrier; from Houston, Kurt and Jill Olloff, Todd and Lily Carrier, and Ken Carrier.

Elizabeth Savre
Elizabeth (Betty), 82, of Columbia Heights, passed away July 14, 2001.
She was born Elizabeth Julsrud in Rushford. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1940 after which she taught Home Economics in Ellendale, N. Dak., and Chatfield, Minn. In Dec., 1942, she moved to San Francisco to marry Graydon Savre, who was serving in the armed forces. After the war she settled in Minneapolis and then Columbia Heights.
In 1968 she returned to teaching at Columbia Heights High School until she retired in 1979.
She and her husband spent their time traveling, volunteering at church and enjoying friends.
She was preceded in death by three brother and two sister.
Survivors include her husband, Graydon; and their four children, Susan (Jon) Derksen, Steven, Scott (Lori), Sonja (Michael Stiegier); six grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
Funeral services were July 18 at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery.
