Gerald W. Laumb
Jerry Laumb, 51, of Rushford, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at his home due to cancer.
He was born Jan. 27, 1950, to George and Bernice (Thorud) Laumb.
He married Barbara Carrier on March 16, 1968.
Mr. Laumb had worked at Farmers Elevator in Rushford for nine yeas and at Cenex as an LP gas driver for 21 years.
He is survived by his wife, Barb; one son, Jay (Amber) Laumb of Kasson; two daughters, Amy Geiwitz of Houston, and Sarah (Darin) Meyer of Rushford; four grandchildren; seven brothers, George Laumb Jr., Mike (Rena) Laumb; Don (Lexie Boehmke) Laumb and David (Lori Krage) Laumb, all of Rushford, James (Donna) Laumb of Clarksville, Tenn., Richard (Jeanne) Laumb of Texas and Randy (Cindy) Laumb of Washington State; six sisters, Nancy (Lewie) Benson, Debbie (Allen) Heiden and Joyce (Bill) Miller, all of Rushford, Phyllis (Walt) Porter of Orange Park, Fla., Beverly Porter and Lori (Jim) Booth, both of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bernice; mother-in-law, Wanda Carrier; brother-in-law, Jim Porter; and nephew, Jessie Carrier.
Funeral services were July 24 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy G. Mueller
Dorothy G. Mueller, 77, died Friday (Aug. 3, 2001) at the Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy G. Steinfeldt was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Winona County, to Ernest and Anna (Larson) Steinfeldt.
On March 15, 1941, she married Emmett J. Frauenkron in Pickwick. Together they farmed in Ridgeway and Money Creek until Emmett died on Feb. 2, 1972. She then worked for TRW in Rushford for 17 years retiring in 1988. During her retirement she took great joy in cleaning houses and doing other odd jobs for people who needed the help.
She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.
Survivors include two sons, David Frauenkron of Stockton, and Emmett “Pete” (Jeanne) Frauenkron Jr. of Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Irene (Kevin) Reid of White Bear Lake, and Lois Kruse of Houston; special friend, Wallace Senne of Houston; three grandsons; three brothers, Paul (Anita) Steinfeldt of Houston, Edward (Eleanor) Steinfeldt of Winona, and Rolland (Geraldine) Steinfeldt of Houston; one sister, Florence (Russell) Bublitz of Winona; and a sister-in-law, Dorma Steinfeldt of Houston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Emil; one sister, Ellinora; three infant brothers; and one grandson, Leroy.
Funeral services were Aug. 8 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiated. Burial was in the Money Creek Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or the Money Creek Masonic Lodge.

Burdell B. Smith
Burdell B. Smith of Woodbury, MN, formerly of Rushford, passed away to his heavenly home at 63 years on July 31, 2001, after a gallant battle with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He was born November 16, 1937, in LaCrosse, Wis., and attended Readstown High School.
Survivors include his wife, Siri Ann (Solverson) of 41 years; two children, daughter Brenda and partner Marshall of Albany, New York; and son Steven and wife Jody of Glenwood City, Wis.; four grandsons; sisters, Marjorie (Bob) Rowe of Calif., Bettijane (Larry) Gald of Calif.; brothers, Lee (Karen) Smith of Tex.; and Dale (Dorothy) of Okla.; sister-in-law, Odella (Jack) Heal of Viroqua, Wis.; many other relatives and friends who were a special part of his life.
Burdell will be remembered for his unquestioning faith, love of family, and loyalty to the Green Bay Packers.
He served with the 101st Airborne Division as an Army Paratrooper.
In the 1960s, he operated the Rushford Gamble Store and assisted in planning the first Rushford swimming pool.
He began a 21-year insurance career with MSI Insurance and then ran his own Cherokee Smith Insurance Agency in West St. Paul, Minn., prior to his retirement.
He was diagnosed with ALS, Mar. of 2000, just shortly after retirement. Memorials or condolences may be sent to the family at 7581 Teal Road, Woodbury, MN 55125. The family prefers memorials be directed to the ALS Association, Minnesota Chapter.

Joseph Gerhard Westby
Joseph Gerhard Westby died peacefully Saturday (June 30, 2001) at the Clarion Heath Care Center, where he was a resident. He was 94.
Mr. Westby was born on Dec. 18, 1906, to Christian and Dora (Elefson) Westby on their family farm near Rushford. He was the eighth of nine children.
He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1928. For 17 years he taught history and band in several Iowa towns. While teaching in Forest City, he met Blanche Paulson, who was also a history teacher. They married in 1934 and had one daughter.
Mr. Westby earned his master of Arts in music from the University of Iowa in 1940.
He returned to Forest City with his family in 1945 and began employment with the New York Life Insurance Company. In 1965, he became a Chartered Life Underwriter for NYLIC.
While living in Forest City, Mr. Westby served on the school board and the city council as well as several civic organizations. He and his family were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Following his retirement in 1971, Mr. and Mrs. Westby lived briefly in Hot Springs Village, Ark., before returning to Forest City, Iowa.
After the death of his first wife in 1981, he married Vera Frowick Peterson in 1982. They lived in Decorah and Mesa, Ariz., before moving to Clarion in 1992. They lived at the Meadows Retirement Home and attended First Lutheran Church in Clarion.
Musically gifted, Mr. Westby led or participated in bands and choirs throughout his adult life. He was also a very skilled golfer, an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret (John) Wold of Evanston, Ill.; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be July 15 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church near Rushford. Interment will be at Highland Prairie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
Arrangements were provided by Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, and Hoff Funeral Home, Rushford.

Katherine and Daniel Hegland
Infant twins, Katherine and Daniel Hegland, children of Nancy and Darin Hegland of Northfield, passed away shortly after birth on Tuesday (July 3, 2001), at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
Family graveside services were held July 6 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield with Rev. Clay Oglesbee officiating.
Katherine and Daniel are survived by parents Nancy and Darin Hegland of Northfield; maternal grandfather William Neil of Northfield; paternal grandparents Elizabeth and Roger Hegland of Peterson; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Arrangements by Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.

David P. Reed
David P. Reed, 58, of Peterson, died Monday (July 9, 2001) at Winona Memorial Hospital. He had been hospitalized since Saturday.
He was born July 13, 1942. He grew up in Rock Dell Township, and was a graduate of Hayfield High School, class of 1961.
He married Jan Peterson on Sept. 7, 1963, in Rochester. They were later divorced. On July 13, 1984 he married Mary Cichanowski. They were later divorced.
He was employed at IBM in Rochester for 22 years. He was then an over-the-road trucker for Kujak Trucking of Winona, and was presently employed at TRW Automotive in Rushford.
He is survived by two daughters, Dawn Lance and Melissa Reed, both of Minneapolis; one son, Jesse Reed, of Pickwick; two brothers, Eugene (Lucine) Reed, of rural Racine, and Royce (Karen) Reed, of rural Pine Island; and one sister, Amber Fox, in California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Funeral services will be today (July 12) at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville, the Rev. Jules Erickson officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Racine, Minn.

Irene Frances Biesanz
Irene Frances Biesanz, 84, of Winona, died after a short struggle with cancer Sunday (July 15, 2001) at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
She was born April 6, 1917, in Mosinee, Wis., to Michael and Ann (Kronenwetter) O’Connor.
In 1938, she graduated from the College of St. Teresa with a double major in Latin and English and a minor in German.
She worked as a librarian in Great Falls, Mont., for a year, followed by several years of teaching Latin, German and American History in Ocono Falls , Wis., High School.
She married Charles William (Bill) Biesanz Sr., on Dec. 30, 1941, and continued her teaching career through the lives of her 11 children: Charles (Becky) of Winona, Anne (Ted) Roberton of Rushford, Thomas of Winona, Teresa (William) Schumaker of Winona, Philip of Richfield, David (CJ) of Sacramento, Calif., Barbara (Mark) Pozanc of Winona, Francis (Rebecca) of Sleepy Eye, Don (Lynn) of Winona, Robert (deceased) and Julie (Geoff) Gardner of Winona. She has 31 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Dorothy Callaghan of Sacramento.
She served in many capacities throughout her life: She was president of the Community Memorial Hospital auxiliary, president of the Alumnae Association of the College of St. Teresa, and she served on the boards of Viterbo College and the College of St. Teresa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Philip; and son, Robert Paul.
A Mass of Christian Burial was July 18 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, the Rev. John Sauer officiated. Entombment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.

Hiram E. Danielson
Hiram E. Danielson, 88, Lanesboro, a former farmer and park superintendent, died July 10, 2001, at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester. He had been ill with leukemia for four months.
He was born July 29, 1912, in rural Chatfield. On July 22, 1940, he married Lillie Honsey in Peterson. Before moving to Lanesboro in 1969, he lived in the Fillmore County area, including rural Chatfield and rural Peterson, and in Waukon, Iowa. He farmed for 30 years, was Lanesboro park superintendent for 15 years and after retirement worked at the Lanesboro Post Office for eight years.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Carrol (Lois) of Harmony, Gary (Debbie) and Ronnie (Sandy) both of Lanesboro, Dennis (Phyllis) of Rushford, and Michael of Austin; seven daughters, Sharon Mickelson of Harmony, Mavis Dion of St. Paul, Janet (Dean) Burdick of Chanhassen, Julie (Glen) Jensson, Susie (Walter) Bradley and Lolly (Doug) Kessel, all of Lanesboro, and Helen (Miles) Edmundson of Ramsey; 29 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter and eight brothers.
Funeral services were July 12 at Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Canton, the Rev. Audree Catalano officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
