Sibert Maynard Olness
Sibert Maynard Olness, 82, of Winona, passed away Monday (April 3, 2000) at his home.
Sibert, known as Maynard, was born June 22, 1917, in Peterson to John and Bertha (Hermanson) Olness. After graduating from Peterson High School as salutatorian of his class, he farmed with his dad on the family farm.
He was married to Corrine Margaret Boyum by Dr. Oscar C. Hanson on June 20, 1945, at the Arendahl Lutheran Church, rural Peterson. After their marriage they settled in Winona, where Maynard was employed at Bay State Milling Co. for 39 1/2 years, where he ran the grain elevator.
He was a member of Central Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Corrine; three children, Bonnie (Robert) Simonet of St. Paul, Susan Frosch of Winona and James of Roseville; five grandchildren; a brother, Manvel Olness of Rushford; three sisters, Berdine (Hubert) Highum of Peterson, Olive (Palmer) Peterson of Rushford and Evelyn (Ronald) Bremseth of Rushford; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a son-in-law.
Funeral services were April 8 at Central Lutheran Church, Winona, with the Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating. Burial was in the Arendahl Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Sawyer, Scott Moran, Wayne Highum, Murton Boyum, Cortland Humble and George Hovland. Former associates of Bay State Milling Co. were considered honorary pallbearers.

Gladys Rostad
Gladys Rostad, 89, of Rushford and formerly of Houston died Monday (April 10, 2000) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born on October 29, 1910, in Houston County, to Oscar and Anne (Jordshaugen) Gaustad. She was raised in the Yucatan area. She married Leo Rostad on October 19, 1930, in Houston.
She enjoyed crocheting; doll collecting and she devoted all of her life to her family.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Delores Thompson of Rushford; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Odin (Dorothy) Gaustad of Houston; four sisters: Clara Ledebuhr of Houston; Agnes Mierau of Rushford, Violet Traff of Houston, and Lillian Collins of Arizona.
Her husband Leo, son-in-law Milford, granddaughter Kathy, and brother Jerry preceded her in death.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 14, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Money Creek Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.

Cora Pauline Woll
Cora Pauline Woll, 96, Cokato, Minn., and formerly of southeastern Minnesota and Litchfield, Minn., died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Cokato Manor, Cokato, Minn.
She was born February 23, 1905, in Hector, Minn., the daughter of Emma (Neubauer) and John H. Rice. In 1932, she married Erwin L. Woll in Hector, Minn. She was a hairdresser in Rushford, Minn., and the surrounding Winona area. Mr. Woll died on July 1, 1993.
Mrs. Woll was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hart, and loved to fish and garden.
She is survived by her two sons, John (Joanie) of Pine City and Lee (Connie) of Eden Prairie; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Mary Jane) Rice of Willmar; and two sisters, Bertha and Orma Pederson, both of Hector.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Gary, three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were Apr. 11 at Faith Lutheran Church, Winona, Rev. Mark Dumke officiated. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Memorials may be directed to Cokato Manor, 180 Sunset Ave., Cokato, Minn., 55321.

Elmer N. Johnson
The funeral for Elmer N. Johnson was Apr. 18 at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, the Rev. Victor Jortack officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Johnson, 87, of Rushford, a former construction worker and firefighter, died Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Arendahl Township, Fillmore County to Hans and Ingeborg (Koljord) Johnson. After his mother’s death he was raised by his maternal-grandmother, Aaste Koljord. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Rushford-Peterson area farmers until moving to Hungry Horse, Mont., in the 1950s and was a construction worker and firefighter in Montana for many years. He returned to the Peterson area a few years ago. In 1958, he married Hilda Thorp in Montana. Mr. Johnson was a member of North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro and the American Legion. His interests included gardening and fishing.
He is survived by cousins. His wife preceded him in death.

Harold A. Pearson
Harold A. Pearson, 94, of Rushford, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at Winona Community Memorial Hospital. He was living at the Good Shepherd Home in Rushford.
Harold was born August 13, 1905, in New Windsor, Ill., the son of Peter and Betty (Hedlund) Pearson. At the age of seven he moved to the Fonda and Newell, Iowa, area. He grew up and was a farmer there.
On September 12, 1927, he was united in marriage to Lila B. Meyers. To this union were born three children: Harold Pearson Jr, Eugene and Sharon Kay. In 1958 they moved to Rushford and continued to farm. In his later yeas Harold worked for the Green Thumb Program.
He was a member of Ellsborg Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, Iowa, and Rushford Lutheran Church in Rushford.
He is survived by his son Harold (Jone) Pearson Jr. of Cherokee, Iowa; a daughter, Sharon Kay (Wayne) Johnson of Rushford; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Gene, and five brothers.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (April 20) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home Chapel in Rushford with the Rev. Roger Knudson officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa, with the Rev. Jack Kahle officiating the committal service.

Arthur G. Johnson
Arthur G. Johnson, 98, of Rushford, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born on Oct. 19, 1902, in Preble Township of Fillmore County to Gustav and Jessie (West) Johnson. He married Myrtle Hanson on Sept. 7, 1933. She died in September 1952.
Mr. Johnson farmed for many years in the Highland area. He then became a carpenter for 20 years, retiring at age 85. He was a member of Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson. His interests included trout fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Joel (Audrey) Johnson and Maynard (Marjo) Johnson, both of Rushford; one daughter, Betty (Loren) Bierbaum of Eyota; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Rexford of Preston; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, three sisters, and one grandson.
Funeral services were April 21 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rod Nygren officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ricky Karlson
Ricky Lawrence Karlson, 42, of Rushford, died suddenly at home on Thursday (April 19, 2001).
Rick was born on August 30, 1958, to the proud parents of John and Sharon Karlson. After finishing school, he pursued his lifelong passion - carpentry work. He owned and operated several carpentry businesses in the Rushford area, quickly establishing a reputation for quality craftsmanship. When not bending nails, Rick could often be found along his favorite trout stream, trying to hook another three-pound brown trout. Like his father, Rick would eagerly devour any history book, particularly if it was a Civil War book.
Rick is survived by one sister: Laurie Johnson of Richfield, Minn.; four brothers: Jeff (Joy) Karlson of St. Michael, Bob (Val) Karlson of Richfield, Steve (Sue) Karlson of Anoka, and Ted (Joette) Karlson of River Falls, Wis.; seventeen nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held April 24 at Montini Hall in Rushford, the Rev. Tom Schoen officiated. Per Rick’s request his body will be cremated with burial at a later date.

George Oliver Loken
G. Oliver Loken, 86, died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born on March 22, 1915, in Canada, to George H. and Minnie (Johnson) Loken. He married Lucille A. Pederson on October 19, 1938, in Lanesboro. Together they farmed in Houston, Hokah, Caledonia and Yucatan areas. He was confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, which is now Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. He was a church custodian at Cross of Christ and maintenance man at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
Survivors include five sons: Larry (MaryAnn Mohan) of Rushford, Roy (Dixie) of Rollingstone, Dennis (Cindy) of Mankato, Robert (Sue) of Dakota, and Jeffrey (Frieda) of Stewartville; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Amelia Stadtler of Caledonia and Eva Wright of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday (Apr. 27) at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Michael, Christopher, Jason, Nicholas, Perry, Anthony, Thomas, Zachary and Joseph Loken.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.

Melba A. Bostrack
Melba A. Bostrack, 81, died Thursday (Apr. 26, 2001) at the Austin Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Peterson, Minn., to Magnus and Amalia Jacobson. She graduated from Peterson High School.
She married Clifford Bostrack Oct. 5, 1937, in La Crosse, Wis.
Mrs. Bostrack is survived by her husband, Clifford, of Austin; three daughters, Carol (Mitchell) Stethem of Minneapolis, Jane (James) Ryan of St. Charles, Kathleen (Greg) Brown of Austin; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Adolph.
Mrs. Bostrack lived most of her life in Austin where she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was an active member and volunteer in the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to Sons of Norway, taught Sunday School, was a Girl Scout Leader and worked at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home. She enjoyed gardening, trout fishing, cooking, music and handwork.
Funeral services were Apr. 30 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, the Rev. James Mikkelson officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
