Virginia Garness
Virginia F. Garness, 85, of Rushford, died Tuesday (May 1, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home Rushford.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1916, in Rushford to Roy Steven and Susie Mae (Lampman) Otis. She was raised in the Rushford area and graduated from Rushford High School. She married Ernest Garness on Oct. 23, 1939, in Decorah, Iowa.
Mrs. Garness was very active at making crafts for her friends and for area activities. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushford where she was a church elder and Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Peterson Garden Club.
Mrs. Garness is survived by two brothers: James Otis of St. Charles and Byron (Elsie) Otis of Belvidere, Ill.; two sisters: Grace Heublein of Rushford and Lillian (Orley) Rasmuson of Milwaukee, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, and a daughter who died shortly after birth.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tues., May 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushford with the Rev. Robert Drier officiating. Burial of her cremated body will be at Oak Grove City Cemetery at a later date.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the First Presbyterian Church Ramp Fund.
Pearl Bennitta Johnson
Pearl Bennitta Johnson, 82, of Rushford, died at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford on Sunday (May 6, 2001).
She was born on Nov. 9, 1918, in Rushford, to Andrew and Bella (Olson) Rasmussen.
She attended Rushford rural schools. She married Edgar M. Johnson on June 5, 1942. The couple had two sons, Douglas and Max.
Mrs. Johnson owned and operated Pearl’s Beauty Shop in Rushford for 38 years. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church and Rushford Lutheran Church Ladies Aid.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by a son, Douglas (Carol) Johnson of Dodge Center; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Delores (Arthur) Ensberg of Grand Rapids; and a brother, Robert (Lorna) Rasmussen of Rushford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, her parents, an infant sister, and four brothers.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 11, 2 p.m., at Rushford Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 10, from 5-7 p.m. at Hoff Funeral Homes Cook Rushford Chapel, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Walter Howe
The funeral for Walter Howe was May 11 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Rushford, with the Revs. Rod Nygren and Jules Erickson co-officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Howe, 92, of Highland Prairie and Stewartville, a retired electrician, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Born May 6, 1906, to Carl and Inga (Christenson) Howe in Highland Prairie, he attended Bridge Creek School and farmed at Bridge Creek until joining the Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater.
On Aug. 23, 1944, he married Gladys Kopperud in Highland Prairie. They lived at their farm home in Highland Prairie and in Stewartville. Mr. Howe was an electrician for Norman’s Electric for more than 30 years. A life-long member of Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, he as an active volunteer and served on the church council. He was a 50-year member of the Rushford VFW and American Legion, and was active in the Senior Center. He enjoyed yard work, trips to Norway, and playing cards and pool.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Kenneth (Elizabeth) of Stewartville; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alette Dahl of Rushford.
A sister and five brothers preceded him in death.
Memorials are suggested to Highland Prairie Lutheran Church or Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund in Stewartville.
Mabel F. Grover
Mabel F. Grover, 88, of Rushford, died Sat. (Mar. 17, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born on Aug. 19, 1912, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Carl and Bertha (Harm) Kriese. She grew up in LaCrosse, graduated from LaCrosse Central High School and attended nursing school in LaCrosse.
She married George Grover on June 24, 1932, in LaCrosse. Following her marriage Mabel and George moved to Rushford, Minn. where Mabel lived the remainder of her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Hobby Club in Rushford. Mabel was an avid reader, loved caring for her home, and was a very nurturing grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by two sons: Jerry (Diane) Grover of Rushford, and Don (Verna) Grover of Taylors Falls, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Frey of Arizona; one sister-in-law, Adeline Kriese of LaCrosse; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one great-granddaughter, one brother, Jule and one sister, Dorothy.
Funeral services were Mar. 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushford, the Rev. Robert Drier officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford.
The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church.
Milton Haslerud
Milton Haslerud, 72, of Lewiston, Idaho, died March 10, 2001.
He was born to Albert and Esther Haslerud in Peterson.
He retired as a glazier, member of Local 1324.
Survivors include sons Brett of Robbinsdale, Blair (Sarah) of Plymouth; one grandson; a brother Glenn of Engelwood, Fla.; a sister Adeline Ungerman of Norfolk, Vir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and four brothers.
The family will receive friends between 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 24, at 4350 Trenton Lane, Plymouth, and requests memorials to the Cancer Society.
Lucille A. Loken
The funeral service for Lucille A. Loken was Mar. 16 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Rushford, with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial was in Stone Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Loken, 82, of Rushford, a longtime area farm homemaker, died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
Lucille A. Pederson was born April 21, 1918, in Amherst Township, Fillmore County. On Oct. 19, 1938, she married George Oliver Loken in Lanesboro. They farmed in the Houston, Hokah and Caledonia areas before purchasing a farm south of Rushford. A member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and belonged to ladies aid and ALCW.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Larry (Maryann Moham) of Rushford, Roy (Dixie) of Rollingstone, Dennis (Cindy) of Mankato, Robert (Sue) of Dakota, and Jeffrey (Freida) of Stewartville; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Deloris (Harold) Blagsvedt of Spring Grove; and two brothers, Dale (Beverly) Pederson and Carroll (Gladys) Pederson, both of LaCrosse, Wis. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, three brothers and a sister.
Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.
Clarence Peterson
Clarence Peterson, 92, of Readstown, Wis., passed away on Thursday (Mar. 1, 2001) at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.
He was born at Montgomeryville, in Crawford Co., Wis., on Oct. 11, 1908, to Milton and Nellie (Maybee) Peterson. He married Millie Spurrier on July 9, 1929, in Winona. For the first few years of their marriage, they worked at the Kickapoo Development Company Farm near Gays Mills. He also served as a truck driver for the apple orchards of the farm. In the late 1930s, they began farming in Crawford County. They retired in 1968 and lived at Sugar Grove. Mr. Peterson loved to hunt, fish, tinker and swap stories.
He is survived by his wife, Millie of Readstown; one son, Arlan Peterson of Soldiers Grove; two daughters, Arlene (George) Alexander of Soldiers Grove and Kay (Allen) Howe of Rushford; 17 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Roger; his parents; one sister, Nora Ward; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Valery T.
‘Buster’ Ronnenberg
Valery T. ‘Buster’ Ronnenberg, 77, died Monday (Mar. 12, 2001) at the Watkins Home in Winona. He was born on Feb. 1, 1924, in Rushford, to Fred and Elizabeth (Lekivetz) Ronnenberg.
He farmed in the Fountain City, Wis., area prior to moving to Winona. He managed the Motor Inn and AAA Service in Winona.
He is survived by three sons, Andy of Winona, Alex of Galesville, Wis., and Mark Ronnenberg of California; five daughters, Angela Knoblock, St. Cloud, Valerie (Dale) Mauss, New Albin, Iowa, Patty (Doug) Schulte, Hazel Run, Minn., Irene (Tom) Sonsalla, Stoughton, Wis., and Christine (Joseph) Gorghuber, St. Cloud, Minn; 10 grandchildren; and one brother, Leeland Ronnenberg, Greenley, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Niles Ronnenberg; five brothers; and three sisters.
Services were Mar. 15 at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Rushford, in the spring.
Gladys B. Tangen
Gladys B. Tangen, 93, of La Crosse, died Tuesday (Mar. 13, 2001) at Hillview Health Care Center.
She was born in Rushford March 1, 1908, to Oscar and Cora (Swenson) Fossen. She had been a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in LaCrosse.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Beverly Rubin of La Crosse, one adopted daughter, Kathy Scholze of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one granddaughter; one grandson; one sister, Mildred (Mim) Dubbs of Rushford; one sister-in-law, Barbara Fossen of Winona; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lenard Jorgenson; her second husband, Marvin Tangen; two sisters, Lillian James of Rushford and Olive Stark of La Crosse; and one brother, Gordon Fossen of Winona.
Funeral services were Mar. 15 at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse; the Rev. Rachel Thorson-Mithelman of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Patricia Lee
Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Patty, Mrs. Mark Lee, 46 of rural Ortonville.
Patty died Sept. 16th at her residence due to cancer.
A mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Sept.19th at 2 p.m. in the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.
Father Wilfrid Lambertz, OSB officiated and burial was in the Mound Cemetery at Ortonville.
Patricia Marie (Brotzel) Lee was born Feb. 3, 1956, at Milbank, SD; the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Scheff) Brotzel.
