Edwin G. (Fat) Kaseforth
Edwin G. (Fat) Kaseforth, 82, of Springfield, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Springfield Medical Center, Springfield. Services were Nov. 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Kaseforth of Springfield; daughters, Marsha and husband Charles Schmidt of Springfield, Donna and husband Clyde Schmidt of Springfield; son, John and wife Roseanne Kaseforth of Springfield; four grandchildren, Tammy and husband Brent Hatlestad of Willmar, and Matthew Schmidt, Allison and Johnny Kaseforth of Springfield; brother, Ervin and wife Helen Kaseforth of Springfield; sisters, Viola Johansen of Montevideo, Elizabeth Hansen of Spicer, Cleona and husband D.C. Bliss of Seaforth, Lillian and husband Alvin Schiller of New Ulm; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law, Stanley Hansen and Delmar Johnson.
Edwin was born Oct. 8, 1917, on the family farm in Stately Township. He was a lifelong farmer, moving into Springfield in 1984. He attended Dotson Rural School District #88. On Sept. 20, 1947, he married Ruth Ohlemann at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He was on the board of directors for the Springfield Elevator, ASCS office and Stark Farmers Mutual Insurance Agency of Sleepy Eye. He was also an insurance representative with Stark Farmers and North Star Mutual Insurance companies. He was a current member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. Edwin enjoyed hunting, fishing, his grandchildren, puzzle books, bird watching, making beer can chairs, and tinkering and fixing anything and everything.
Casket bearers were Mark Roiger, Ken Kaseforth, Duane Wendler, Virgil Kettner, Matthew Schmidt, and Greg Gangelhoff. Honorary casket bearers were P.J. Schmidt, Mel Cook, Anthony Guza and Emil Wendler.

Richard Joseph Mathiowetz
Richard Joseph Mathiowetz, 64, of Leavenworth.Died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m., at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a K.C. rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 8 p.m., both at the funeral home on Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Mathiowetz of Leavenworth; children, Brian and Ronda and their children, Brett, Rachel, Stacy and Chad Mathiowetz; Glen and Lana and their children, Ashley, Matthew, Molly and Sean Mathiowetz; Dean and Judy and their children, Bridget and Ellen Mathiowetz; Julie and Paul and their children, Jordan and Victoria Anderson, all of Sleepy Eye; and Suzann and Troy and their children, Abby, Mitchell and James Hendricks of Bemidji; his mother, Louisa Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Roman Mathiowetz of St. Paul, Rosemary and James Rathman of Comfrey, Rita and Patrick Morgan of Elmore, Reinhold and Connie Mathiowetz of Marshall, and Alma Mathiowetz of New Ulm; and many uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin; a son, Leon, at the age of 19 in 1979; a brother, Rudy; and several in-laws and nieces and nephews.
Richard was born in Sleepy Eye on Oct. 23, 1935, the son of Martin and Louisa (Moldan) Mathiowetz. He was raised in Leavenworth where he resided his whole life. Richard attended District 12 school in Leavenworth Township and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Sleepy Eye in 1953. He married Mary Lou Koll on Oct. 30, 1956, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan. They made their home in Leavenworth.
Richard began his career at the age of 18 for the Martin-Mathiowetz Construction Co. He enjoyed playing baseball for the Leavenworth baseball team in his youth and continued his involvement as a board member throughout his life. He and his family spent many enjoyable days together relaxing at their lake home and camping in the early years. He was an avid fisherman and world traveler, visiting more than 40 countries. Hunting and wildlife were his passion. He was a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, MN Deer hunters Association, Paynesville Sportsman's Club and Koronis Lake Association. He took this involvement to a personal level by restoring a hundred-plus acres of his own land to natural habitat by planting thousands of trees and replenishing wildlife.
Richard was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs Catholic Church in Leavenworth and a 26-year member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a philanthropist in many ways, orchestrating many charitable projects including: the building of Sleepy Eye Hockey Arena, Divine Providence building improvements, Schoenstatt on the Lake facilities, the athletic field lighting at Sleepy Eye Public School, Leavenworth baseball and softball fields, the Stark ball field, the all weather track at Sleepy Eye Public School and the St. Mary's football field. Richard's benefactors include the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, St. Mary's Church and Schools, Crosier Seminary, St. John Vianney Seminary, San Lucas Tolliman Mission in Guatemala, MN Citizens Concerned for Life, Brown County Historical Society, and many other missions and charities.
He was an advocate and tireless worker for the transportation and farming industry. He served on the board of directors for MN Transportation Alliance, Associated General Contractors of MN, Highway Construction Industry Council and the MN Agri-Growth Council. He was also affiliated with the MN Asphalt Pavers Assn., Concrete Pavers Assn, and many others.
Richard was first and foremost a loving husband, then a son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His legacy will be the family he loved and nurtured and the roads he built.
The family would prefer memorials to the Richard and Mary Lou Mathiowetz Foundation.

Herbert F. Scobie
Herbert F. Scobie, 86, was remembered in a memorial service held Oct. 15, 1999 at St Matthew's Episcopal Church in Evanston, Illinois. He died Aug. 14 in the Evanston Hospital after suffering a series of strokes.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Taylor Scobie of Evanston; daughter, Taylor Humphrey of Winnetka, Illinois; a brother, George, of Rochester; and a sister, Jeanne Hornbrook of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Scobie, his mother Alma Witt Scobie; and a sister, Elizabeth Scobie.
Herbert was born in Sleepy Eye to Frank and Alma (Witt) Scobie. He was an Eagle Boy Scout and in high school won first place state prize as a flutist. He graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School and attended the University of Minnesota where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a master's in metallurgy. At the university, he was a member of the marching band, the Sigma Xi honorary science society and Triangle engineering fraternity. He served in several leadership positions for the fraternity, including national executive director and editor of the fraternity's magazine, Triangle Review. The fraternity's national annual leadership school is named in his honor. Herbert was an honorary life member of the Fraternity Executives Association.
After earning his bachelor's degree in 1935, Herbert worked as a chemist for American Hoist & Derrick in St. Paul. He returned to the university for graduate study, to teach, and to run the foundry control laboratory and work as a consultant for a number of war-related metal processing firms. He wrote the college textbook, "Chemical Analysis for the Foundry Control Laboratory." He joined the American Foundrymen's Society in Chicago in 1947. Initially he was education director and became founding editor of Modern Casting magazine.
In 1956, Herbert became executive director of the Non-Ferrous Founder's Society until 1962 when he established his own management organization in Evanston. Following his retirement, he was director for the Wilmette Chamber of Commerce and worked as a counterman and writer for Schaefer's Wines, Spirits and Gourmet Foods in Skokie. He also traveled to Scotland to learn more about his heritage as a member of the Clan MacKay.
At a later date, Herbert's ashes will be interred near Sleepy Eye and also in Clan MacKay country in the highlands of Scotland.

Larry C. Stewart, 59, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, October 29, 1999, at his home. Funeral service was Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Stewart; sons, Scott and Sean Stewart; daughter, Stephanie Stewart, all of rural Sleepy Eye; parents, Raymond and Florence Stewart of Courtland, Kansas; brother, Steve Stewart and wife Bonnie of Hampton, Iowa; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emmett and Regina Burke of New Hampton, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Ray Burke of Edina, Jerry Burke and wife Carol of Manchester, Iowa; Tim Burke and wife Sue of Apple Valley; Joe Burke and wife Connie of New Hampton, Iowa, Piet Maarsen of The Netherlands; sisters-in-law, Kay Allen and husband Tim of Duluth, Melanie Burke of Eagan; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Marcella Maarsen.
Larry Charles Stewart was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa. He spent his youth in Courtland, Kansas, where he graduated from Courtland High School in 1958. He attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and the University of Eau Claire, earning his bachelor of science degree in biology and master's degree in ecology. He taught school in Plainfield, Iowa, for 15 years. He moved to New Ulm in 1977.
Larry married Arlene Burke May 15, 1982, in Duluth. They made their home in Sigel Township, Brown County. He taught school in Springfield for a year. He worked for the State of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a fisheries technician.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He was also a member of the New Ulm Hockey Association, New Ulm Baseball Association, New Ulm Figure Skating Association, and the Izaak Walton League.

Rodney John Stoneberg, 60, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in Minneapolis. Services were Monday, Nov. 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his sister Marilyn and husband Jerry Fromm of Cambridge; sisters-in-law, Patricia Stoneberg of Tracy and Phyllis Stoneberg of Sleepy Eye; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dennis in 1984 and Jerome in 1996.
Johnnie was born June 6, 1939, in Cambridge Township in Minnesota to Rodney and Laura (Hesch) Stoneberg. He grew up in the Sleepy Eye area, attending St. Mary's Schools. Following school he worked for Pietrus Foods for a period of time, moved to Minneapolis to work in road construction, later returning to work at the Orchid Inn and Meyer's Bar and Lounge until his health no longer allowed him to work.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Aid Association. Rodney enjoyed working on puzzles, watching Twins baseball and Vikings football, gardening, shopping, visiting with friends about old times, and especially visiting with the elderly. He enjoyed old time and country music.
Casket bearers were Dan Fromm, Tim Fromm, Rick Fromm, Bradley Stoneberg, Douglas Stoneberg and Mark Stoneberg.

Linus Louis Helget, 73, of Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, October 30, 1999, at New Ulm. Services were Wednesday, November 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Helget of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Shirley and husband Leon Sellner of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Bradley and wife Jennifer Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Randy Sellner of Sleepy Eye and Tammy Sellner and fiance Jeff Hinderman of Sleepy Eye; great-grandson, Samuel Sellner of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Valeria Brey of Klossner and La-Verna and husband Leo Gulden of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Linus was born Dec. 14, 1927 in Stark Township, Brown County, to Joseph and Loretta (Haala) Helget. On May 7, 1947, he married Florence Braun at Fairfax. Linus lived his entire life in Stark Township, Brown County, on the family farm.
He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, attended school in Albin Township and St. Mary's School. He enjoyed farming and raising Black Angus cattle.

Ida Herwick, 98 of Bozeman, Mont. formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Nov. 18, 1999, in Bozeman. Services are Saturday, May, 6, at 1 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
She is survived by her daughter, Gretchen Kleimer of Bozeman; son, Bill and wife Jane Herwick of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother, Fred and wife Esther Zimanski of Hutchinson; sister, Minnie Lander of St. Paul; son-in-law, Charles Watson of New Brighton; grandchildren, Tom and Marsha Mann, John and Sandy Rysgaard, Susan Zweig, David and Sara Herwick, Bill "Sonny" and Marge Herwick, Johnny Herwick, Steve and Cindy Kleimer, Mark and Carol Kleimer; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil; daughter, Marge; brothers, Leonard and Alfred; and sisters, Pauline and Aluena.
Ida was born March 29, 1901, in Sleepy Eye to Louis and Emma Zimanski. She grew up on the family farm and completed the eighth grade in school. She worked as a housekeeper until her marriage to Emil Herwick on Aug. 11, 1925, in Sleepy Eye. Ida lived in Sleepy Eye until the death of her husband, Emil, in 1980. She moved to Coupeville, Wash., in 1982 to be near her son Bill and his family. While living in Coupeville for 10 years, she was an active member in her Senior Citizens Club, played in a card club and enjoyed tending to her roses. Ida moved to Bozeman in May 1992 to be near her daughter Gretchen, who took care of her until her death. Ida was a source of great joy, wisdom and love to all who knew her. She walked daily, visiting with people along the way. Ida loved gardening, especially tending to flowers, crocheting afghans for family and friends and playing cards. Ida loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family very much. Children always made her day.

Lucille Helget, 81, of Springfield died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at Mercy American River Hospital in Carmichael, Calif. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Dec. 4, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. St. Anne's rosary will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the church and there will be a parish prayer service on Friday evening at the funeral home.
She is survived by sons, Thomas and wife Phylis Helget of Eagan, Charles Helget and friend Mercy Parker of Carmichael; a daughter, Connie and husband John Erickson of Broomfield, Colo.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Leo Pelzel of Sleepy Eye, Ervin Pelzel of Sleepy Eye, Melvin Pelzel of Sleepy Eye, Bernard and wife Maryo Pelzel of Vermont; sisters, Leona Lowinski of Sleepy Eye, Irene Meyer of New Mexico, Marian and husband Frank Mueller of Missouri, and Lorraine and husband Mel Tauer of Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin, in 1997; brothers, Arthur, Ed and Roman.
Lucille was born Feb. 16, 1918, in rural Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Clement and Augusta (Engel) Pelzel, and was raised on a farm near Sleepy Eye. Following marriage to Martin Helget on April 23, 1941, they moved to Springfield. She became a nurse's assistant and worked at the Springfield Hospital and then for Dr. Frank Boyle for over 20 years.
She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church since marriage and was active in church activities and the CCW. Lucille was a member of the Springfield Garden Club and a birthday club for many years, and enjoyed community activities. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, reading, baking, and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The past few years, Lucille has lived with her children.
Casket bearers are Scott Trana, Roger Stiff, Joe Wetschka, A.J. Wetschka, John Erickson and Mike Erickson.

Adella Lambrecht, 76, New Ulm died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at the Lafayette Good Samaritan Center in Lafayette. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery, New Ulm. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral. There will be a rosary by the St. Anne's Court at 6:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., both Thursday evening at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Norman Lambrecht of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Francis Rieger of New Ulm; son, Rodney Lambrecht and his fiancee Roberta Grossmann, both of New Ulm; grandchildren, Marc Rieger and Brittany Rieger, both of New Ulm; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arline Krambeer of New Ulm, Mildred and Clarence Blumhoefer of Fairfax; and brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Eleanor Mertz of rural New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Adella was born March 14, 1923, in Sigel Township, Brown County, to Jacob and Catherine (Flor) Mertz. She married Norman Lambrecht on June 17, 1947, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. She had worked at the Woolworth Store in New Ulm and later as a sales clerk at various stores in downtown New Ulm.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Anne's Court #389, N.C.S.F. and the Christian Mothers Society.

Miranda May Wurtzberger, 21, of Sleepy Eye died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, in Sleepy Eye. Services were Tuesday, Nov. 30 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her parents, Daniel and Lisa Wurtzberger of Sleepy Eye; brother, Jesse Wurtzberger and special friend Jennifer Fleck of New Ulm; sisters, Heidi and Katie Wurtzberger of Sleepy Eye; maternal great-grandmother, Marion V. Domeier of New Ulm; maternal grandparents, Dennis and Florence Saffert of New Ulm; nephew, Quinton Wurtzberger of New Ulm; and numerous aunts and uncles and many very special friends. She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Melvin Domeier, and her paternal grandparents, Florian and Eleanor Wurtzberger.
Miranda was born May 1, 1978, in New Ulm, to Daniel and Lisa (Saffert) Wurtzberger. She attended and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1998. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.
She worked briefly for AUI in Sleepy Eye and Carlson Craft in Mankato, before joining the 3M staff in New Ulm.
Miranda enjoyed her family and friends, snowmobiling, motorcycling, four-wheeling and swimming.
Casket bearers were Joe Saffert, Brandon Saffert, Eddie Wurtzberger, Randy Fehlman, Tony Wurtzberger and Randy Wurtzberger. Honorary bearers were Joleen Kral, Malinda Tauer, Heather Brandl, Alaina Helget, Rachel Tauer and April Tauer.

Carol June Reiner, 63, of Springfield died Dec. 7, 1999, at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield. Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye with interment in St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield. Visitation is from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. Visitation continues for one hour prior to the service Friday at St. John's Ev. Church in Sleepy Eye.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Reiner of Springfield; five daughters and their families: Roxanne and husband Mark Malecek of Redwood Falls and their children, Alyssa, Amanda, Abby and Ahnna; Linda and husband Wayne Henriksen of Springfield and their children, Landon and Cody; Rhonda and husband Dean Evers of Comfrey and their children, Marlayna and Carissa; Sheila and husband Jon Roiger of Springfield and their children, Maren and Maleah; and Stacie Reiner of St. Louis Park; brothers, Dr. Curtis L. and wife Susan Meinert of Baltimore, M.D.; and Gerald Dean and wife Elayne Meinert of Sleepy Eye; brother-in-law, Henry Kaping of northern Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Maynard in childhood, and sister, Bonnie.
Carol was born June 28, 1936, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Christensen) Meinert. She grew up and attended District #36 country school in Prairieville Township. She graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1954 and following her schooling she worked at Haas Printing in Sleepy Eye. She married Richard Reiner Aug. 6, 1957, in Sleepy Eye and the couple made their home in Bashaw Township where they farmed until 1992. Carol worked with Rich in the auction and real estate business for many years. They moved to Springfield in 1992 where they have lived since that time.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and the Ladies Guild. Carol thrived on spending time with her family, especially being part of her grandchildren's lives. She had countless interests and loved everything there was to love about life.
Casket bearers are Dean Evers, Jon Roiger, Mark Malecek, Thomas Johnson, and Wayne Henriksen.

Vivian D. Axenty, 87, of Sleepy Eye died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999 at Sleepy Eye Care Center. Services were Saturday, Dec. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Interment will be at a later date in Pacific Crest Cemetery, Redondo Beach, Calif. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Sally Timm of Sleepy Eye; a half-sister, Irene Loose, and a half-brother Ronald Schutt, both of Lomita, Calif. Also surviving are nephews, Richard Schutt of St. Louis and Bruce Lee of Idaho; nieces, Janet May of St. Louis, Betty Cole of Texas, Bev Yardley of California and Sharon Todd of Oregon; sister-in-law Jean Browning and brother-in-law Dave Axenty, both of California. She is also survived by several cousins and assorted relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, half-brother Forrest (Sandy) Schutt, and niece Dianne Lee of Idaho.
Vivian Dorothea Schutt was born Feb. 7, 1912, in Bemidji, to Edward Albert Schutt and Marie Janet (Siems) Schutt. They lived on a homestead in Schoolcraft Township near LaPorte where her father also ran the lumber yard. Upon her mother's death in 1914, she went to live with her maternal grandparents, Louis and Meta Siems in Chicago, Ill. At the age of 10 she came to live with her father and step-mother in Sleepy Eye. She grew up there and attended high school and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1929. After graduation she worked at various jobs in St. Paul and Vadnais Heights. She married Carl Herman Jorgenson of Chicago, and, after his death in 1940 she moved back to Sleepy Eye. She worked in food service at various Sleepy Eye cafes and ran the lunch counter at the Hollmer Drug Store. She moved to California in 1961 and was head pastry cook for South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach, Calif. She married Robert Axenty in 1964 in California. After his death in 1972, she eventually moved to Springfield, Minn., in 1987 and moved to Sleepy Eye in 1990. In 1994 she became a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center, where she resided until her death.
