Kenneth Lawrence LeMay
Kenneth Lawrence LeMay, 81, of Grand Rapids, and Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Duluth, died Sun., June 6, 2004, surrounded by family at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids.

Ken was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Cromwell to William and Frances LeMay. Ken attended school in Duluth, and as a young man served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked at a number of jobs as a welder and mechanic, including a shipyard during WW II, McDonald Motors, and Goldfines Trading Post. He retired from National Iron-Pettibone on Dec. 1, 1981. He married Della Jean McIlwain on June 30, 1978.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clifford and Donald.

He is survived by his wife, Della of Grand Rapids, children Kenneth (Michele) LeMay and Dennis (Denise) LeMay, both of Saginaw, and Karen (John) Wainio and Konnie (Bob Berg) LeMay, both of Duluth, stepchildren Wallace 'Corky' McIlwain and Barbara McIlwain, both of Grand Rapids, Gary (Judi) McIlwain and Jack 'Jake' (Kathy) McIlwain, both of Bovey, brothers Warren LeMay of Wis. and Jack LeMay of Duluth, sisters Elaine Storm, Mary-Lou Childres and Shirley Anderson, all of Duluth, and Joyce Weight of Calif., 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine, Minn.

Sylvia Irene Paulson
Sylvia Irene Paulson, a 1932 graduate of Proctor High School, died Mon., June, 7, 2004, at the Rennes Nursing Home, De Pere, Wis. She was 90.

She was born in Van Buskirk, Wis., to Otto and Ida (Lindstrom) Waldo. After graduation, she was employed at several businesses in Superior and Duluth. On Feb. 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Arthur O. Paulson. Working together, they were owners and operators of the Burnett Store and Post Office, retiring in 1977 after 30 years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Culver.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Arthur in 1989.

She is survived by her daughter Verna (Roberto) Molina and their children Lucas and Nicolas of Green Bay, Wis., sons Byron (Maria) and their children Michael and Stephen of Bloomington, Minn. and Mark (LeAnn) and their children Tanner and Dylan of Duluth, special friend Marion Jacobson of Duluth, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in the Industrial Cemetery, Culver.

Myrtle Hilda DeMenge
David 'Lefty' DeMenge of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother Myrtle Hilda DeMenge. The Cloquet resident died Sun., June 6, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 82.

She was born in Grayling, Minn., and was a 1939 graduate of McGregor High School. She married David DeMenge on Sept. 9, 1945, in Grayling. Myrtle was a homemaker and had previously managed a restaurant in Aitkin for several years. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cloquet.

She was preceded in death by her husband David in 1991, two sisters and a grandson.

Myrtle is survived by four other sons, three daughters, a brother, 23 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a Godchild Gail Wells.

Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton.

Bernard Oesterreich
Bernard 'Barney' Oesterreich, who was an active member of Forbes United Methodist Church in Proctor until his diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease in 2000, died Sat., June 19, 2004. He was 89.

He was born in Brainerd, Minn. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Duluth, where he was a lifelong resident of West Duluth. He attended Duluth schools and Denfeld High School. As a youth, he worked in the CCC Camps. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps, stationed in Idaho as a military police officer. Barney was an employee of U.S. Steel's Duluth works for 43 years, retiring in 1977.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley, two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include his children Charrie (Robert) Mencel of Duluth, Joseph (Diane) Oesterreich of Duluth, Pamela (Daniel) Thompson of Saginaw, Jeffery (Diane Haugley) Oesterreich of Hastings, Minn. and James (Donna) Oesterreich of Panama City Beach, Fla., brother Eugene Oesterreich of Tenn., 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Military Honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Robert Glen Horton
Robert Glen Horton, who attended Proctor schools until 1941 when the boundary was changed and Hermantown opened their own school, died Dec. 24, 2003, in Victor, Mont. He was 80.

He was born in Duluth and received a bachelor's degree in business from UMD. He married Eleanor Kolojeski. He was in the Pacific theater during World War II. After the service, Bob and Eleanor were 4-H agents. He was a partner in an insurance business in Dickinson, ND. After selling his business they took teams of youth to New Guinea and Haiti to construct buildings for rural churches.

He is survived by his children Missy Murphy of Misawa AFB, Japan, Greg Horton of Grand Forks, ND, Kevin Horton of Mont., and Cyndi Hughes of Norfolk, Virg., 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a sister Audrey Rude of Vancouver and a brother Milton Horton of Grand Junction, CO.

Harold William Samways
Harold William Samways, who was born in Proctor, died on Thurs., June 17, 2004, in Viewcrest Health Care. He was 83.

He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Navy after high school. During World War II, while on the USS Forest, he participated in landings on Normandy, Africa, and others. He worked for Minn. Power until retiring in 1981. Harold was a member of the Salvation Army for 39 plus years, the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1980 as a Senior Chief P.O., I.B.E.W. No. 31, Past Commander West Duluth American Legion, VFW Post 137, Fleet Reserve Assoc. 349, B.S.A. where he received his 50 year Service Award in 1994. He also was a former Scout Master in various Troops, enjoyed stamp collecting and was a member of the Duluth Stamp Club.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Ella, first wife Roberta and his brother Floyd.

He is survived by his wife Darlene, daughters Susan (Morris) Bohlin of Duluth, Roberta (Dennis) Hurmi of White Bear Lake, Linda (Garth) Stoneburner of Kingman, Ariz., Adell-Rae Kinsman of Silver City, NM, Cheryl (John) Sundman of Buffalo, Minn., sons Harold (Linda), Floyd (Susan), both of Plympton, Mass., Randolph 'Randy' (Pamela) of Hermantown, and Mark (Patty) Kinsman of Barnum, a sister Evelyn (Donald) Higgins of Sekiu, Wash., 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Military Honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Vernon Burnell Benjaminson
Vernon Burnell Benjaminson of Parliament Drive, Virginia Beach, died Tues., June 15, 2004. He was 80.

Vernon was born in Browntown, Wis. to the late Selma and Martin Benjaminson. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served during WW II and was honorably discharged as a chief petty officer in 1947. He graduated from Alfred State University in 1950 with an associate degree in dairy science and in 1952 from Clemson University with a B.S. in dairy science. Vernon worked for Sealtest Dairy for 20 years and Miller's Dairy for 17 years. He was a past district deputy, grand master of the 56th Masonic District, past master of Kempsville Lodge No. 196, Royal Arts Mason and Knights Templar of the Grice Commandery.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Catherine, three children, 10 grandchildren and sister Jeanette Anderson of Duluth.

Entombment was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Frank L. Seme, Sr.
Services were held earlier this week for Frank L. Seme, Sr. The Ely resident died Fri., June 18, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was 84.

Frank was born in Ely and was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. He was a member of the United States Navy. He married Mary Bonicatto on June 6, 1946, in Hibbing. Frank was a lifelong resident of Ely and a lifetime member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, a member of Ely American Legion Post 248, Ely VFW Post 2717, Knights of Columbus, Senior Citizens Club, and the DAV. Frank was the owner and operator of Seme's Market in Ely until he started to work at Reserve mining in 1956 retiring in 1984.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Louise and Franny.

Surviving is his devoted wife of 58 years Mary, children Frank Jr. 'Mick' (Sue) Seme of Saginaw, Mary Kay (Wilson) Spence of Pike Lake and grandchildren Ted, Malena, Nick, and Janell.

Alvin G. Schlegel
Services were held last week for Alvin G. Schlegel. Alvin, who was born on May 4, 1928, in Proctor, who had been employed at the First National Bank, passed away on Thurs., June 17, 2004, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. He was 76.

He was the son of George and Esther (Virnig) Schlegel. He served in the U.S. Navy. He attended the Duluth State Teachers College, Georgetown University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin. On June 18, 1949, he married the former Helen Meyer. She preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 2000. Alvin was also employed at Central State Bank of Gary-New Duluth, Park State Bank Morgan Park, Burroughs Corp. Duluth, Hibbing and Chicago, Diebold Corp. in Brainerd and Security State Bank, Pillager, Minn., where he was the president and owner. Alvin was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church in Watertown, past president of the Brainerd Rotary Club, Board of Directors of the Brainerd Community College, Board of Directors of Region 5 of the Economic Development Loan Committee, Camp Confidence Board of Directors, Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge No. 615, Minnesota State Elks Association, where he had served as the Central State President and State President, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Grand Lodge Elks, 3rd and 4th Degree-Knights of Columbus, Brainerd American Legion Post and a 50-year member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

Alvin was also preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his children Craig (Sharon) Schlegel of Plant City, Fla., Maryellen Ancheta of Blaine, Cheri (Mike) Quist of Alexandria, and Jean (John) Heiden of Watertown, grandchildren Jaclyn, Nicole, Amber, Lee, Alex, Emily, Kirsten, Megan and Greg, and also survived by other relatives and friends.

Burial was in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley with Military Honors.

Willie Charles Allen
Willie Charles Allen of Proctor, formerly of Rocky Mount, N.C., passed away Fri., June 25, 2004, at his home surrounded by family. He was 74.

He was born on July 27, 1929, in Rocky Mount, N.C. At birth he was given the initials W.C. and to this day he is known to his relatives as just that. He received the name Willie Charles from his early school teachers and has carried the full name throughout his life. Willie was united in marriage to Nancy Elizabeth Jones on Sept. 16, 1955. To this union one son was born. He brought his wife Nancy and son Frederick to live in Proctor in 1966, while yet serving in the Air Force. Willie was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kansas City, Mo. in 1969. He served as an Elder in the West Congregation of Duluth since 1974. He worked as a sous chef for the Radisson Hotel in Duluth for 21 years and retired in 1991. Willie will be remembered by many who received special cards of encouragement from him over the past years. He was a man who showed loving concern for the welfare of others, putting their needs ahead of his own. Willie loved cooking, music and dancing as well as looking for ways to help others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Nancy, son Frederick of Aurora, Colo., sisters Thelma and Pearl Mae, brother 'Little' Willie, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many cousins and close friends, some who called him 'Papa' and 'Dad.'

Memorial service is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sat., July 3, 2004, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4602 Arrowhead Rd., with Edward L. Staelens officiating.

Judith Annette Mickelson
Lauri (Joe) Kitto of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Judith Annette Mickelson. She died Thurs., June 24, 2004, in her Cloquet home surrounded by her family. She was 67.

Judy was born in Minneapolis. She was diagnosed with lung and bone cancer on June 2, 2004, and fought bravely against the disease throughout the diagnosis. She lived in Minneapolis until age seven, at which time the family moved to Cole Lake. In 1949 she moved to the Cloquet area where she attended Cloquet schools and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1954. Judy graduated with honors from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in 1996 with an Associate in Applied Science, an Associate in Arts Degree, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Judy owned and operated 'The Mustard Seed' consignment and gift shop. Judy's other standout employers were the Multiple Sclerosis Society and The American Red Cross whom she sold pull tabs for at the Lumberjack Lounge and Foundry.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents Axel and Edith Carlson, step-mother Rubye Angell, brother-in-law Eugene Peterson and special friend Bob Amborn.

She is also survived by another daughter, four sons, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, a sister and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Mon., July 5, 2004, in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. Visitation will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tues., July 6, 2004, also at Northland Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Wright Public Cemetery in Wright.
