Robert Addy, 80, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died at his home in Apache Junction, Ariz., on Nov. 16, 2000. Private services were held in Arizona,with interment in Sleepy Eye at a later date.
He is survived by son, Robert, Jr., of Greenwood, Ind., and his wife Paulette and their children Aaron and Jason; daughter, Jan Petzel of Springfield, Ore., and her son Patrick; and son, Steven of Hastings and his children Justin and Lyndsay of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Caroline Addy of Sleepy Eye; his wife, Dela Addy; and a brother, Richard Addy.
Robert was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Omaha, Neb. He was a World War II veteran and held a variety of jobs.

Lillian Ludewig, 87, of Morgan, and formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Gil-Mor Manor Nursing Home in Morgan where she had been a resident since June 1997. Services were Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Sturm Funeral Home chapel in Sleepy Eye, with burial in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Rev. Gary Wees officiated the service.
Lillian was born Dec. 9, 1912, in Minneapolis to Joe and Inez Hammond. She grew up and attended school in Minneapolis, later working for Harold Jones' parents, On Feb. 21, 1931, she married Harold Jones in Redwood Falls. They lived in various places, mostly in the Sleepy Eye area. Following Harold's death in December of 1952, Lillian continued to live in Sleepy Eye. She married Felix Ludewig on Dec. 10, 1963, in Sleepy Eye. Lillian entered Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan in June 1997 and enjoyed her stay there. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Felix Ludewig of Sleepy Eye; children, Lois Bloemke of St. James, Frank Jones of Good Thunder, Evelyn and Bill Birkemeyer of Sleepy Eye, Harold Jones of Morgan, Helen Kimmel of Springfield, Fred and Marie Jones of Swansea, Ill., Edward and Bonnie Jones of Rochester, William and Sharon Jones of Rochester, Mary Helin of Fridley, Francis Jones of St. Peter, Robert Jones of New Ulm, Donald Jones of Mankato; and Virginia and Fred Coners of Springfield; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a brother, Sam and wife Inez Hammond of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Jones; and daughters , Florence (Katie) Jones and Emma Scherer.
Casket bearers were John Jones, Nathan Jensen, Shawn Jones, Tim Birkemeyer, Fritz Coners and Darren Hacker.

Lorene Savage, 92, of Sleepy Eye , died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000 at Season's Hospice in Rochester. Private services were held Nov. 28, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. The Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Rex and Linus, both of Rochester; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Claire Dalidio of San Luis Obispo, Calif. Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James, in 1947; son, Donald, in 1990, three brothers, Joseph, Eddie and Clifford; and two sisters, Bessie Maxson and Betty Jungles.
Lorene was born Aug.t 1, 1908, in Highmore, S.D. She later moved to Sleepy Eye with her family. She married James Savage on Jan. 17, 1933, in Comfrey. They farmed around the Comfrey area and later moved to Sleepy Eye. Lorene graduated from Sleepy Eye High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Mankato State University. She taught 41 years in both country schools and special education in New Ulm. She retired in 1974. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Teachers Retirement Association, Old Sleepy Eye Collectors Club of America, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, Christian Mothers and Lady Foresters
Memorials are preferred to Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

Agnes Schroepfer, 97, a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye and formerly of New Ulm, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Mass of Christian burial was be Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
Agnes is survived by her daughter, Irene Richert of Hendersonville, North Carolina; a son, Gerald E. Schroepfer and his wife Arlene of rural Sleepy Eye; 14 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and by sisters-in-law, Frieda Haas of Sleepy Eye, and Angie Sturm of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norbert Schroepfer on May 13, 1984; her brothers, Leo Rubey and Henry Rubey; a granddaughter, Sandy Sellner in June of 1998; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank and Louisa Zwaschka, Edmond and Martha Windschitl, Michael Sturm, Leo A. and Minnie Schroepfer, Henry Haas, and Anthony and Brigetta Schroepfer.
Agnes was born Jan. 20, 1903. in Stark Township, Brown County, to Anton and Mary (Petinzer) Rubey. She attended Iberia Country School and later St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. On Sept. 11, 1923, she married Norbert Schroepfer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage they farmed in Sigel Township, Brown County, for 30 years. They moved into New Ulm in 1953 and she lived there until moving to Countryside Apartments in Sleepy Eye in 1995. She had been a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center since July of 1998. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and the Christian Mothers Society in Sleepy Eye, and a member of the Christian Mothers Society in New Ulm, and a past member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.

Myrtle M. Hale, 98, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral service were Nov. 25 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in Fort Ridgely Cemetery in Cairo Township, Renville County. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Velma and Arnie Schweiss of New Ulm, Nancy and Paul Diederich of Broomfield, Colo.; son, Nathan Hale of Winona; daughter-in-law, Beverly Hale of New Ulm; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great -great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Tesrow of rural Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Hale; sons, Robert Hale, Harvey Hale and Joseph Hale; and daughters, Betty Hale and Opal Hale.
Myrtle was born on May 20, 1902, in Home Township, Brown County, to Nathan and Abbie (Tewsksbury) Tesrow. She married Joseph Hale. After marriage they farmed in Home Township. On April 17, 1984, she became a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye and had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Sleepy Eye.

Letitia Helen Beech, 92, of New Brighton, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the Innsbruck Health Care Center in New Brighton. Services were Nov. 25, at Union Congregational Church, UCC in Sleepy Eye, with burial in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Letitia was born April 16, 1908, in Prairieville Township near Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Charles and Isabell (Garrioch) Palmer. Her family moved from the farm to Sleepy Eye where Letitia lived and attended school. After graduation from high school she received her Normal Training and taught country school. She married Oren R. Beech on Nov. 29 (Thanksgiving Day), 1928, in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in New Richland until moving to Sleepy Eye in 1938. They moved to Bloomington in 1945 where she and her husband started a plastic business. Letitia was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ and the Order of Eastern Star in Sleepy Eye. She played the bass viol in her husband's orchestra and enjoyed art and making greeting cards.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth and husband Joseph Hembd of Coon Rapids; four grandchildren, Gregory of Phoenix, Ariz., Nancy of Randall, Iowa, James of Richfield, and Joan of Boone, Iowa; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oren, in 1987; and sister, LaDonna.
Casket bearers were Gregory Hembd, James Hembd; Junior Reinke and Bruce Greene.

Dolores Ann Platz, 83, of Springfield, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at Springfield Medical Center. Services were Nov. 25 St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield handled the arrangements.
Dolores was born Aug. 14, 1917, in North Star Township to Oscar and Barbara (Hillesheim) Juenemann. She attended District #56 country school. Following school, Dolores worked for the Henry Platz family until marriage. On Feb. 20, 1937, she married Ervin Platz at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. Following marriage, she and Ervin continued to live in North Star Township on the Platz homestead, where they farmed until retirement. She was a lifetime member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, a long term member of St. Anne's CCW and St. Monica's Catholic Order of Foresters. Dolores also worked with the St. Raphael's Craft Ladies doing quilting. She enjoyed flowers, especially African violets, gardening, canning, was an excellent cook and baker, reading, quilting, playing bingo, her family, being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visiting with others, and the independence of farm living,
She is survived by her husband, Ervin of Springfield; a son, Gilbert and wife Helen Platz of Waskish; a daughter, Marlys Platz of Springfield; grandsons, Gerard Platz of Springfield, and Steve and wife Julie Platz of Loretto; great-grandchildren, Russell and Courtney Platz; brothers, Ralph and Willard Juenemann of Springfield; sisters, Marilyn King of Estherville, Iowa, and Rosemary and husband Norbert Ochs of Walker; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Juenemann of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gerald, Delbert and Jerome; and a sister, Irene Groebner.
Casket bearers were Mike Ochs, Joe Groebner, Steve Platz, Mark Roiger, Gerard Platz, Steve Schmidt, Ken Huebert and Ronnie Groebner. Honorary casket bearers were Leona Platz, Jackie Roiger, Sherry Groebner, Kathy Huebert, Margaretha Winkel and Elvera Schumacher.

Lucille Paa, 84, of Springfield, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 29, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with interment in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield handled the arrangements.
Lucille was born Oct. 31, 1916, in New Ulm, to Andrew and Elizabeth (Dewanz) Wolf. She attended school in New Ulm. Following her education, Lucille worked as a caretaker/housekeeper for families in Blue Earth and Minneapolis before marriage. On Oct. 30,1948, she married Frank Paa at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. They lived in Sleepy Eye in the late 1940s, moving to Springfield in the 1950s. Lucille was a long time member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church and St. Anne's CCW. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading and caring for her husband, Frank.
She is survived by a brother, Art and wife Lucille Wolf of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Marcella Wolf, Ann Dittrich, Fran Reinhart and Charlotte Savat of New Ulm; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, in 1982; and brothers, Melvin and Stanley Wolf.
Casket bearers were Brian Wolf, Brian Boettcher, David Wolf, Bob Dittrich, Vern Ahrendt and Florian Dittrich. Honorary casket bearer was Alesia Fenger.

Sylvester P. Hertling, 77, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the New Ulm Medical Center. Services were Tuesday, Nov. 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Sylvester Paul Hertling was born Sept. 8, 1923, to Frank and Adelaide (Brown) Hertling in Guthrie, Minn. He and his family moved to Wabasso in 1937, and later to Redwood Falls. He attended school in Guthrie, and farmed with his parents before being drafted in the U.S. Army in 1944. On June 25, 1946, he married Monica Steffl at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Sylvester was discharged from the service in January 1947. He farmed north of Sleepy Eye and did custom corn shelling and combining for many years. Following retirement in 1996, Monica and Sylvester moved to their present home just east of Sleepy Eye on Hwy 14.. He was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Sylvester played softball for many years and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards, but especially spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Monica of Sleepy Eye; children, Allan and wife Suzanne Hertling of Orangevale, Calif., Doug and wife Barb Hertling of St. Cloud, Robert Hertling of Sleepy Eye, Laurie and husband Robert Seifert of New Ulm, Cindy and husband Vern Haala of Sleepy Eye, Steve and wife Rita Hertling of Sleepy Eye, Dave and wife Lisa Hertling of Sleepy Eye, Ronald Hertling of New Ulm, and John and wife Deb Hertling of New Ulm; 18 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Florence and husband Wess Westeberg of Walker, Lorena Nygard of Virginia, Bernice Killian of Woodbury, Catherine and husband Leonard Eller of Flandreau, S.D., Alice Frank of New Ulm, Albert and wife Dolly Hertling of Glenwood, Bernard and wife Donnie Hertling of Redwood Falls, Rose and husband John Schwerin of Redwood Falls, and Frank and wife Irene Hertling of Redwood Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Adelaide Hertling; son, Tom, in 1974; grandson, Danny, in 1991; and brothers, Richard, Leonard and Gilbert (Toby) Hertling.

Dustin "Dusty" Lloyd Nachreiner, 17, of Sleepy Eye died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in rural Sleepy Eye as the result of an auto accident. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his parents, Terry and Theresa Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye; sister, Melissa Nachreiner and special friend Matt Serbus of Kimball; grandparents, Leon and Betty Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye and Lloyd and LaDonna Havemeier of Sleepy Eye; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dusty was born March 29, 1983, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Terry and Theresa (Havemeier) Nachreiner. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and attended Sleepy Eye Public School. Dusty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and a past member of FFA. He enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, weightlifting, hunting, fishing--specially ice fishing, waterskiing, camping and being with friends. He also enjoyed helping his grandfathers and farmers in the area.
Casket bearers were Dan Braulick, Matt Ibberson, Mike Portner, Keith Braulick, Dean Nessett, Jeremy Reinhart, Nick Braulick and Brandon Hinderman. Honorary casket bearers were the class of 2001.

Arden Melzer, 63, of rural Hanska, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the New Ulm, Medical Center. Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 4, at Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm. Burial, with military honors conducted by the Madelia American Legion Post #19 and Madelia VFW Post 43842, was in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Survivors include his sister, LaVerne Melzer and brother Henry Melzer, both of Hanska; sister-in-law, Audrey Melzer of Sleepy Eye; nephews, Howard Melzer and his wife Christie of New Ulm, James Melzer and his wife Mary of Eden Prairie, Dale Johnson of Waterville; and great-nephew, Jeremy Melzer and great-niece, Megan Melzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerold Melzer, and nephew, Darrell Johnson.
Julius Arden Melzer, the son of Henry and Gertie (Hanson) Melzer, Sr., was born March 15, 1937, in Madelia. He spent his youth on the family farm, attended country school, and graduated from Madelia High School in 1955. For three years he studied at St. Olaf College in Northfield and the University of Minnesota. He entered the United States Army in 1961. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Hanska area where he joined his father in raising purebred hogs. He continued producing, showing and selling hogs until the mid 1980s. He was the recipient of many honors and trophies at national shows and sales for his work. He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska and enjoyed working with youth, and teaching Sunday school and Bible school. He also assisted 4-H and FFA members with their various projects. Arden was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed football, baseball, basketball, and horse racing.

Aletha V. Friton, 96, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center. Services were Monday, Dec. 4, at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Aletha was born Oct. 27, 1904 in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Frank Louis and Maud Louisa (Heath) Ebelsisor. She grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye, graduating from high school in 1923. She attended Normal Training in 1924 and taught school for three years. Aletha married Ellsworth "Pork" Friton on Oct. 20, 1927, in St. Paul. The couple made their home and farmed in Home Township until retiring and moving to Sleepy Eye in 1979. Ellsworth preceded her in death in 1998. Aletha was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and the Martha Circle in Sleepy Eye. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, needlework, embroidery and crocheting. She especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis and husband Eugene Schimschock of Chaska; grandchildren, Mike and Linda Brandl of Sleepy Eye, Doug and wife Deb Brandl of Sleepy Eye, Denise and husband Scott Hooper of St. Cloud, David and wife Jane Schimschock of Chaska, and Douglas and wife Karen Schimschock of Baltimore, Maryland; 10 great-grandchildren;one great-great-grandchild; and brother-in-law, Lloyd and wife Dolores Friton of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellsworth; daughter, Joyce and husband Willard Brandl; grandson, Daniel Schimschock; and two sisters and one brother,
Casket bearers were Doug Brand, Angela Fischer, Mike Brandl, David Schimschock, Anna Brandl, Denise Schimschock, Sam Hooper and Danielle Schimschock. Honorary casket bearers were Joe Brandl, Rob Brandl, John Brand, Austin Fischer, Heather Brandl, Doug Schimschock, Brian Schimschock and Emilee Schimschock.

Helen Loeck, 62, of New Ulm died Monday, Dec. 5, at her home. Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. John's Catholic Church in Searles, with burial in New Ulm City Cemetery. Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Donald of New Ulm; her mother, Irene Grossmann of Searles; sisters, Gloria and her husband Larry Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Diane and her husband Kevin Roschnoffky of St. Louis, Mo.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Georgie and Roger Grossmann.
Helen Dorothea, the daughter of Albert and Irene (Grathwohl) Grossmann, was born July 25, 1938, in New Ulm. As a child she moved with her family to farm near Hanska and attended St. John's Catholic School in Searles and New Ulm High School, graduating in 1956. She worked for Tony Downs Foods in Madelia for 23 years. She was united in marriage to Donald Loeck Aug. 6, 1988, at St. John's Catholic Church in Searles. They made their home in Balaton for four years before moving to New Ulm in 1993. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Searles.

Herman A. Radloff, 95, of New Ulm died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
The funeral service was Monday, Dec. 11, at United Church of Christ in New Ulm, with burial in the City Cemetery, New Ulm. Full military honors were conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.
Herman is survived by his sisters, Hilda Fritsche of New Ulm, Eleonora Haber of Sleepy Eye, and Edna Sear of New Ulm; also by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alice Fick; and by brothers-in-law, Paul Fritsche, Earl Haber, and Elmer Sear.
Herman was born Sept. 29, 1905, in Home Township, Brown County, to Frederick and Bertha (Vogel) Radloff. He attended District 21 country school in Home Township. After school he was a ham radio operator in Sleepy Eye. He enlisted in the Volunteer Communication Reserve in 1929. In 1940 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Ranger, USS McCawley, USS Weaver and the USS Metcalf. He lived in St. Louis, Mo., most of his life, returning to New Ulm several years ago. He was a member of United Church of Christ in New Ulm, the Brown County Historical Society, and the Sleepy Eye Historical Society.

David Wilbert Wischstadt, 41, of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital from a severe asthma attack. Services were Wednesday, Dec. 13, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
David was born Oct. 24, 1959, in Minneapolis. He grew up with his parents, Wilbert and Beverly (Carnes) Wischstadt, in rural Sleepy Eye. David attended District 18 country school for one year and then attended Sleepy Eye Public Schools, graduating in 1978. He drove semi for Fred Kiecker and Leonard Malecek for four years while he farmed with his father. David married Marleen Matter on Dec. 6, 1981, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye and David continued to farm. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the FFA and MTA. David enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, ice fishing, trapping, farming and raising cattle. He especially enjoyed being with his family and teaching them to hunt and fish.
David is survived by his wife, Marleen of Sleepy Eye; sons, William and Darren, both at home; parents, Wilbert and Beverly Wischstadt of Sleepy Eye; sister, Kathleen Beverly Speckman of Elk River; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; aunts and uncles; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by is mother-in-law and father-in-law, Martha (Pfarr) and Erwin Matter; a nephew; and two nieces.
