Elma M. Neyers
Elma M. Neyers, 94, Gibbon, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop. Funeral services were Tuesday at St. Willibrord's Catholic Church, Gibbon, with interment in the church cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the St. Willibrord's handicap entrance fund.
Elma was born March 19, 1908, in Home Township, Brown County, to William and Ida (Zimanski) Lochner. She married Norbert Neyers on Nov. 18, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, the couple farmed in Home Township, Brown County. Elma and Norbert purchased a farm in Severance Township, Sibley County in 1950. They farmed there until 1976, when they retired and moved to Gibbon. Elma was a member of St. Willibrord's Catholic Church, Gibbon, and the council of Catholic Women.
Elma is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Genny Neyers of rural Gibbon; grandchildren, Lena and David Rathke, Connie and Dan Zweber, Alan Neyers, Maria Neyers and Bill Kapolczynski, Paul Neyers and Mona Fraki, Gary Neyers, Kala Neyers and Greg Gaalswyck; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Zaske of Wadena; and sister-in-law, Ines Lochner of Sleepy Eye. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norbert Neyers; two sisters and five brothers.

Joseph Remi Nuytten
Joseph Remi Nuytten, 79, Marshall, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Minneota Manor Health Care Center in Minneota. Funeral services were Monday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church , Marshall, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Marshall. Rehkamp Funeral Home of Marshall handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Prairie Home Hospice.
Joseph was born April 25, 1923, in Ghent, the son of Constant and Leona (Dobbelaere) Nuytten. He attended school in Ghent and married Mary Senden on Oct. 8, 1946, in Ghent. The couple farmed in Clifton Township until his retirement in 1992, when Mary died. Joe moved to Lyon County Retirement Home, Marshall, in 1993, and then to Minneota Manor in 2002. Farming was his life. He loved farming and socializing with people. Joseph did custom farming in the area for many years.
Joseph is survived by his sons, Paul and wife Jane Nuytten of Sleepy Eye; Alan and wife Patty Nuytten of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla, and John and wife Lynn Hanefeld Nuytten of Marshall; sisters, Julia Van Overbeke of Marshall and Marguerite Nuytten of Ghent; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; a daughter; a grandson; four sisters; and four brothers.

Arthur J. Schmidt
Arthur J. Schmidt, 85, Chicago, formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at the Resurrection Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. Internment was Nov. 27 at Abraham Lincoln Veterans National Cemetery in Joliet, Ill. Cards may be sent to Lillian A. Schmidt, 5334 W Winona St., Second Floor, Chicago, IL 60630.
Arthur was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Linden Township, the son of Henry and Louise (Stueber) Schmidt. He moved to Chicago in 1978, to live with his sister, Lillian, where he resided until his heart attack in March of 2001. He was in intensive care for two weeks and then was transferred to the Resurrection Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Arthur served in the United States Army from 1941-1945, and was in the Philippines. He came back to New Ulm and worked as a farm hand and also painted buildings at farm sites. He was a member of the American Legion Post 547 and the Disabled American Veterans of Chicago. Arthur enjoyed old time concertina music and dancing.
He is survived by his sister, Lillian Schmidt of Chicago; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alvera Julia Miller, 92, Sleepy Eye, formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 2, at Sturm Funeral Chapel in Springfield, with interment in Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Alvera Julia Miller was born Sept. 13, 1908, in Brookville Township, Redwood County, to Carl and Augusta (Strasburg) Richert. She was a member of and confirmed at Springfield United Methodist Church in 1922. Alvera was a graduate of Springfield High School in 1928, after which she attended the National Art School in Chicago. On Dec. 26, 1933, Alvera married Andrew Larson at United Methodist Church in Springfield. The couple lived in San Diego for some time, at which time Alvera worked at the Standard Parachute Corporation during WWII. They then moved to Elk River and later to New Ulm. Following the death of Andrew, Alvera married Robert Miller on March 14, 1979 in Carson City, Nev. They lived in New Ulm until ill health forced them to move to Sleepy Eye Care Center in 1997. In her active years, Alvera enjoyed traveling, sewing and gardening.
Alvera is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Andrew Larson and Robert Miller; brother, Ervin Richert and Robert Richert; sister, Mrs. Edward (Lucille) Grabow; and two siblings in infancy.
Casket bearers are Ralph Bielen, Avona Bielen, Ken Richert, Don Richert, Joan Richert and Lanore Richert.
Erma Laura Lang, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will take place Thursday, 4-8 p.m., and 7:30-9 a.m. on Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Erma was born Aug. 4, 1916, in Burnstown Township, the daughter of William and Alvina (Lawrenz) Gramentz. She grew up and attended country school in Burnstown Township. After her schooling, she worked at A.J. Pietrus in Sleepy Eye. Erma married Leonard A. Lang on Oct. 16, 1940, in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye where she worked as a waitress at the Lincoln and also at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital, before retiring in 1978. Erma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, the Elizabeth Circle and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed being with family and friends, dancing, drawing, playing bingo and watching TV.
Erma is survived by her daughter, Connie and husband Paul Steffen of Shoreview; son Jim and wife Gerri Lang of Maple Grove; five grandchildren, Kristine and husband Robert John, Kimberly Steffen, Susan and husband Shannon Schutz, Dawn Haywood and Ronald Keller; six great-grandchildren, Nathan and Mackenzie Schutz, Dillon John, Brandon Haywood, Ashley Groth and Katelyn Keller; brother-in-law, Ray Lang of Sleepy Eye and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard in 1980; brothers, Henry, Ervin, Otto, Arnold, Herman, William and Richard; sisters, Gertrude Hinton, Esther Bobsin, Ella Nelson, Laura Patterson and Alvina "Toots" Schewe.

Helen G. Bruggeman, 77, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 1, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will take place From 7:30-10 a.m. on Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.
Helen was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Fairfax, the daughter of Ole and Edna (Berg) Nelson. She grew up and attended school in Fairfax, graduating in 1941. Helen attended Minneapolis Business School for two years. She returned to Fairfax where she worked as a bookkeeper at the Fairfax Creamery until 1946. Helen married Jack Bruggeman on Sept. 25, 1946, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. After marriage, the couple moved to Sleepy Eye, where they have made their home for many years. Helen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, and the CCW. She was an avid golfer, and golfed on the women's and couple's leagues for many years. She also enjoyed bowling, knitting, reading and her flower garden. Helen especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren and spending time with her family at the lake.
Helen is survived by her husband, Jack Bruggeman of Sleepy Eye; sons, John and Nancy Bruggeman of Wichita, Kans., Steve and Jean Bruggeman of St. Cloud, Joe and Carol Bruggeman of Sleepy Eye, Pat and Sue Bruggeman of Sleepy Eye, and Dave and Julie Bruggeman of North Mankato; 12 grandchildren; sisters, Viola Wahl of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Dorothy Alseth. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret; brother, Roy; and brothers-in-law, Frank Wahl and Ken Alseth.
Casket bearers will be Joe Bruggeman, Pat Bruggeman, John Bruggeman, Dave Bruggeman, Steve Bruggeman and Sean Bruggeman.

Lillian G. Carlson, 91, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 25, at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, with interment in Clear Lake Baptist Cemetery in Severance Township, Sibley County.
Lillian was born May 28, 1910, in Wellington Township, Renville County to Leonard and Ida (Waknitz) Black. She married Lloyd W. Carlson on Oct. 3, 1930, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairfax. After marriage, they farmed in rural Gibbon and then near Klossner, and from 1944-1967, they farmed in Cottonwood Township, Brown County. In 1974, Lillian moved to New Ulm. She later moved to Countryside Retirement Community in Sleepy Eye, and had been a resident of Sleepy Eye Care Center for the past two years.
Lillian is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Glenn Hughes of Big Fork and Betty and Clem Leonard of Pequot Lakes; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Ormal Bleck of Sleepy Eye, and Leon Black of Franklin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd on Jan. 6, 1967; brother, Melvin Black; and sisters-in-law, Addie Black and Evelyn Black.

Ernest J. Kalkhoff, 76, Morgan, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital, Redwood Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Morgan, with burial in the church cemetery. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Morgan handled the arrangements.
Ernest John Kalkhoff, the son of Henry and Kathryn (Fangmann) Kalkhoff was born Dec. 22, 1924, in Templeton, Iowa. He moved with his family to rural Clements at the age of two. He attended District 101 elementary and Wabasso schools, graduating from Wabasso High School in 1942. On May 2, 1950, Ernest was united in marriage to Dorothy Koll at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan. They lived in Clements until 1957. The couple then moved to Olivia until 1960, when they moved to Morgan, where Ernest farmed and worked until the fall of 2001. Ernest was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Catholic Aid and served as financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus for nine years.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kalkhoff of Morgan; children, Kathleen and husband Dave Sellner of Sleepy Eye, and Luvern and wife Marion Kalkhoff of Morgan; grandchildren, Patricia and husband Jason Ericksen of Sleepy Eye, Fay Sellner of Elk River, Sheila Sellner of Apple Valley, and Alicia and Alison Kalkhoff of Morgan; brothers, Bernard and wife Bernice Kalkhoff of Morgan, Jerome and wife Joan Kalkhoff of Clements; sisters, Rita and husband Francis Goblirsch of Wabasso, Beatrice and husband George Serbus of Hector, and Bernice Senkyr of Franklin. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; and a son in infancy.

Lewis Clair Waller, 84, Brainerd, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillman, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.
Lewis was born Sept. 29, 1917, in Barrett, to Arba and Edyth (Lewis) Waller. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Farm School in St. Paul. He married Dorothy Carlson in St. Paul on Sept. 29, 1940. Lewis worked for Lampert Lumber Company in Minnesota and Iowa, retiring to Peavey Lake in Morrison County in 1981. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Lions Club and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillman.
Lewis is survived by sons, Melvin and wife Patricia Waller and Larry and wife Marilyn Waller; daughter, Carmen and husband Leon Moll; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, W. Jean Waller; and sisters, Phyllis Whitney and Betty Kirk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; parents; brother, Arvid; and sister, Mavis.

Bernice Ellanson, 77, Hanska, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at the Madelia Community Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church in rural Hanska, with interment in the church cemetery. Firle Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.
Bernice Ruth Overlie, the daughter of Albert and Olina (Bryggen) Overlie, was born June 19, 1924, in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County. She attended rural District 7 school and Hanska High School. She worked as a housekeeper in New Ulm for a time. She was united in marriage to Horace Ellanson on Feb. 13, 1943, at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church parsonage. The couple made their home in California, where Bernice worked in a hospital, while her husband completed his military service. They returned to the LaSalle and Hanska areas where they made their home the remainder of their lives; Horace died in 1987. She was a member of the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church.
Ruth is survived by daughters, Helene Karstens of New Ulm, and Sharon and husband Dennis Mosser of New Ulm; son, Dean Ellanson of Hanska; grandchildren, Jason Bejarano, and Deanna, Jeremy, Mike and Tammy Ellanson; great-grandchildren, Danielle Roeser and Kati Beach; brothers-in-law, Phillip Ellanson of Hanska, and Duane and wife Leatrice Ellanson of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Ella Ellanson of Hanska; nieces and nephews. She was precede in death by her parents; husband; and son-in-law, Wallace Karstens.
Casket bearers were Jason Bejarano, Deanna, Jeremy, Mike and Tammy Ellanson, Clayton and Donald Olson, and Bruce and Donald Overlie.

Anne Alfreda Kratz, 83, Robbinsdale, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Crystal Lake Good Samaritan Center in Robbinsdale. Funeral services were held at New Hope Lutheran Church, Comfrey, with interment in Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Comfrey. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Anna was born March 11, 1918, in Adrian Township, to John and Karin (Persson) Goltz. John and Karin Goltz came to America from Lund, Sweden in 1912. On Nov. 18, 1943, Anne married Arthur Kratz at the West Sveadahl Lutheran Church. Following marriage, the couple farmed on the Kratz farmstead until retiring in the late 1970's. In 1998, following the Comfrey tornado, they moved into Comfrey Apartments. They then moved to Halter Estates in Springfield, and in 1999, to the Twin Cities. Anne was a former member of West Sveadahl and Faith Lutheran Churches, and a current member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey. She participated in Ladies Aid, Comfrey Garden Club and various church activities. Anne enjoyed gardening, flowers, crafts, needlework and cooking. Her faith and family were very important to her. Anne was a survivor of cancer and the Comfrey tornado.
Anne is survived by her son, Wayne and wife JoAnne Kratz of Maple Grove; daughters, Diane and husband Jim Deutsch of Maple Grove, and Jane and husband Bill Isaacson of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Scott Kratz, Kevin and wife Meghan Kratz, Michael Deutsch and Heather and husband Jake Danaher; great-grandchildren, Dillon and Madison Deutsch and Nathan Danaher; and brother, Ivar and wife Leona Goltz of Hanska. She was preceded in death by 4 siblings in Sweden; her parents; husband, Art; son, Donavon; brothers, Oscar and Bill Goltz; and sisters, Emma, Martha and Elsie.
Honorary casket bearers were Heather Danaher, Kathy Donner, Doug Kratz, Rick Kratz, Robin Schwaegerl, Michael Deutsch, Rick Goltz, Kevin Kratz, and Scott Kratz.

Gertrude Louise Schrieber, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at the Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Gertrude was born Oct. 25, 1909, in Fehmarn, Germany, the daughter of August and Margareta (Busch) Rose. She grew up and attended school in Germany. Gertrude came to America in 1929, where she worked as a nanny in Fairmont. Gertrude married Herbert S. Schrieber Aug. 16, 1931, in Fairmont. The couple made their home in Winnebago before moving to Sleepy Eye in 1932. Gertrude worked at the Palace Clothing Store for 27 years, and also helped Herbert at the Model Shoe Shop. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, and the Friendly Neighbors Home Extension Group. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, cooking, crocheting, knitting, sewing, crafts and most of all her family and friends.
Gertrude is survived by her son, Richard A. and wife Barbara Schrieber of Bloomington; daughter, Elaine M. and husband Dennis Sellner of Wells; grandchildren, Pamela and husband Rollie Warmka, Todd and wife Sonya Sellner, Susan Schrieber and Cindy and husband Mark Swennes; great-grandchildren, Eric, Megan and Callen Warmka, Nikki, Jamie and Ty Sellner, and Brian and Brandon Swennes; brother, Henry Rose of Fairmont, sister, Emma Thate of Fairmont; sister-in-law, Polly Rose of Truman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert on Jan. 7, 1996; 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

John "Jack" George Schumacher, 61, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Friday at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, handled the arrangements.
Jack was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Benjamin and Frances (Poss) Schumacher. He grew up and attended school in Leavenworth and St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. Jack married Carol Neidecker on Oct. 10, 1961, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm. The couple lived and farmed on the home place in Leavenworth Township. Jack took an active role as a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs and in other community organizations. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his horses, golfing, leather work, woodcrafts and building and working on his own computers.
Jack is survived by his wife, Carol Schumacher of Leavenworth; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Kim Schumacher of New Prague, Ken and JoAnn Schumacher of Sleepy Eye, Allen and Susanne Schumacher, and Pat Schumacher, all of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Paul Wieneke of New Ulm; ten grandchildren; mother, Frances Schumacher of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cliff and Bernette Schumacher of Sleepy Eye, Sylvan and Donna Schumacher of Sleepy Eye, Eugene and Marguerite Schumacher of Emily, and Bernard and Kathy Schumacher of Warba; sisters, Doris Johnson of Arden Hills, and Susan and husband Jeff Pelzel of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Lenora Schumacher of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Schumacher; brothers, Robert and Marvin Schumacher; and brother-in-law, Robert Johnson.
Casket bearers were Steve Lax, Wayne Huiras, Jerome Huiras, Davey Ludewig, Joey Hillesheim and Dean Schumacher. Honorary casket bearers were Eddie and Doris Huiras.

Edgar J. Hoffmann, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at his home. Funeral Services were held Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Edgar was born March 14, 1921, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Elizabeth (Boever) Hoffmann. At the age of two, he moved with his family to a farm north of Sleepy Eye where he grew up. He attended St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. After Edgar completed his schooling, he farmed in the Sleepy Eye area. He married DonnaDeane Berkner on Sept. 14, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home southwest of Sleepy Eye, where they farmed for a few years. Edgar then started commercial poultry farming, which he continued until retiring in 1983. They later moved into Sleepy Eye. Edgar was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and especially his grandchildren.
Edgar is survived by his children, Gary and wife Marie Hoffmann of Worthington, Joel Hoffmann of New Ulm, Mark Hoffmann of Sleepy Eye and his fiancee, Sharyl, and Daune and husband Lynn Soukup of Sleepy Eye; daughter-in-law, Germaine Michels of Hanska; 14 grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Bertrand of Sleepy Eye, Catherine and husband Jack Terrell of Sun City, Ariz., Elizabeth "Betty" Henricher of Flandreau, SD, and Hilda Fritz of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Velma Hoffmann of Sleepy Eye, Rosemary H. Kral of Sleepy Eye, and Adeline and husband Bill Harpil of Glencoe; brother-in-law, Paul Branster of Loveland, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, DonnaDeane in 1992; son, Scott; daughter-in-law, Renee Hoffmann; brothers, Leo, Art and Eugene; and sisters, Esther Miller and Leona Branster.
Casket bearers were Corey Hoffmann, Collin Hoffmann, Brandon Hoffmann, Justin Hoffmann, Jeremy Hoffmann and Nicholas Hoffmann. Honorary casket bearers were Adam Hoffmann and Ryan Soukup.
