Eric Joseph Wilson
Eric Joseph Wilson, who lived in Proctor until he was 13 and was a resident of Albuquerque, NM for the past eight years, died Sat., Jan. 7, 2006. He was 20.

Eric was born Feb. 2, 1985 in Wiesbaden, Germany and graduated from Sandia High School in 2003. Eric joined the Marines in June 2003 and served in Okinawa until his assignment to Yuma in 2005.

Eric was preceded in death by his grandmother Jane McDonald of Hermantown and grandfather John D. Wilson of Birmingham.

He is survived by his mother Linda K. Wilson of Duluth, father John C. Wilson and wife Linda of Albuquerque, brothers John (Alli) Wilson of Newport News, Va., Joseph (Dawn) Baca and Jason (Tonya) Baca of Dallas, sister Tiffany Wilson of Georgia, grandparents Daniel McDonald of Hermantown, Odessa Witherspoon, Ella Mae Wilson, Jennie Lovato, and great-grandmother Jessie Wilson, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services were held in Albuquerque in French Mortuary Chapel, Sat., Jan. 14, 2006, with burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held on Sat., Feb. 4, 2006, from noon until 4 p.m. in Peace in Christ Lutheran Church, 5007 Maple Grove Rd., Hermantown. Family and friends are welcome.

Aaron Marvin Kellett
Aaron Marvin Kellett, formerly of Proctor, passed away Wed., Jan. 25, 2006, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 17.

The Esko resident was born on May 18, 1988, in Duluth to Scott and Cindy Kellett. Aaron was diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) in 1995 and lived a lifetime in a few short years. Aaron was an 11th grade student at Esko High School and was known by many as the “mailman”. He loved golf, football, camping and hanging out with his family. Aaron attended the 3M Golf Championship each year and received golf balls signed by many of the pros.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Marvin Ray Kellett.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by sisters Kerri Kellett of Sanford, Fla. and Genna Kellett at home, grandparents Mary Kellett and Marvin and Natalie Johnson, all of Duluth, aunts and uncles Debra and Kent Oliver of Duluth, Greg Kellett of Duluth, Bruce and Julie Johnson of St. Paul, Karen Johnson of Duluth and Liana Johnson of Anoka, many cousins and special friends, special aide Lindy Barta, and his loving dog Sophie.

Services were held last week in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor, with the Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

George Milton Buerke
George Milton Buerke, formerly of Pike Lake, who founded Better Brands in 1959 and operated the business until his retirement in 1988 , died Fri., Jan. 27, 2006, in his Fish Lake home. He was 76.

He was born Nov. 6, 1929 in Duluth, He married Anita Lou Moore June 10, 1950. George and Anita were the owner/operators of the Homecroft Superette Grocery Store. George was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gnesen Township. He was past president of the Hilltop Lions Club, and a past chairman of the United Way Board of Directors. George was also a member of the Elks Club and the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302. He was a past board member of the MN Beer Wholesalers Association. For the past 20 years, he and Anita traveled to their winter home in North Port, Fla. George loved to fish and hunt in the northland.

He was preceded in death by his wife Anita in April 2005, his parents, his brother Calvin, sister Laverne, and his daughter Rosanne.

George is survived by his sons Douglas (Jody) of Fredenberg, Dean of Alborn, and Randall of Esko, daughters Terese (Hector) LaFrance of Saginaw, Liana (Jon) Swenson and Cheryl (Steven) Lehto of Esko, and Donna (Jeff) Stolpe of Fredenberg, 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were yesterday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-Gnesen. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.

Melvin “Gus” Henry Lindquist
Melvin “Gus” Henry Lindquist, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1957 and was planning to leave on January 28 for Antarctica to accomplish his goal of traveling to all seven continents, died Fri., Jan. 27, 2006 in his Moose Lake home. He was 67.

A former Esko resident, he was born December 3, 1938 in Cloquet to Henry and Ellen (Johnson) Lindquist. He was a Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War. On May 4, 1967, he married Nannette Sass. Mel worked as a boilerman at St. Mary’s from 1969 until 1979. He then went to work as a data control processor for WLSSD until retiring in 2000. He was a member of HOG (Harley Owners Group), a life member of the Cloquet VFW #3979, and a life member of the DAV. He was also a member of the USS Radford DD446 Association and a charter member of the USS Carpenter DD825 Association. Mel enjoyed taking walks on his tree farm, spending time with his grandchildren, and traveling the world.

Mel is survived by his son David Lindquist of Spring, Texas, grandchildren Keegan and Kaitlan Lindquist, his former wife Nannette “Nan” Lindquist of Esko, sisters Annie (Rodney) Weiler of Esko, Janet (Edward) Bressler of Carlton, and Carolyn (Gary) Olson of Chisholm, brother Leslie (Marilyn Radakovich) Lindquist of Proctor, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration dinner for Mel’s family and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Fri., Feb. 3, 2006, in the Fireside Room of Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Cloquet VFW Post 3979 or the American Heart Association.

Harry John Smith
Harry John Smith, who retired from the Car Department of the DM&IR Railroad in 1974, died Tues., Jan. 24, 2006 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He formerly lived on South 65th Ave. West and currently resided in the Garden House Estates. He was 89.

Harry was born in West Jefferson, Ohio on July 27, 1916 to William and Fannie Smith. He was a Duluth resident since 1935. Harry was a member of the DM&IR Retirees Association, the Proctor Moose, and had previously attended Forbes United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys.

Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Melissa M. (Henke) Chaney
Former Saginaw resident Melissa M. (Henke) Chaney of Ramsey, Minn., passed away Mon., Jan. 30, 2006 following a courageous battle with (CIP) Pseudo-obstruction, Polymyocitis, and Mitochondrial Myopath-Transport Chain Deficiency. She was 31.

Melissa was preceded in death by her grandfather James Ramsey and her brother Nathanial Henke.

She is survived by her loving husband Victor, father Jack (Cindy) Henke of Saginaw, mother Joni (Steve) Bargel of Montrose, sister Ashley Henke of Duluth, brother Ian Bargel of Montrose, grandparents Harland & Shirley Henke of Farmington, Evelyn Ramsey of Watertown and beloved niece Lilyana Summar of Duluth.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., Feb. 11, 2006 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 700 Western St., Anoka, Mn.

Thomas R. “Uncle Tom” Scanlon
Thomas R. “Uncle Tom” Scanlon, who grew up in Proctor, graduated from its high school and was a welder and machinist for the DM & IR Railroad, died Mon., Feb. 6, 2006 in the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was 58.

The Eveleth resident was born on January 6, 1948 to William Sr. and Jeannette (Strom) Scanlon in Duluth. Tom graduated from Proctor High School and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Tom was also a welder and machinist for Frasier Shipyards and Minntac. Tom enjoyed the outdoors, especially steelhead fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his father William, Sr. and a brother William, Jr.

Surviving are his children Jason Scanlon and Jennifer Scanlon, both of Superior, grandchildren Kamen Deveau and Sydney Scanlon, his mother Jeannette D. Scanlon of Proctor, a sister Marsha Scanlon Stiemke of Marinette, Wisc., a brother John R. (Janet) Scanlon of Saginaw, nieces and nephews Steven, Scott and Michael Scanlon, Anne (James, Jr.) Robinson, Todd W. Stiemke, Lesley L.(Daren) Detry and Jodi (Jim) Kehtel, grandnieces and nephews Stephanie, Rayanna, Mariah, Justin, Jesse, Matthew, Jonny, Brody, Dreya and Ember, a sister-in-law Karen Scanlon Davis, and many special friends including Gloria Johnson.

A service was held Wednesday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home.

Amanda G. Neve
Amanda G. Neve of Boundary Ave., a lifelong Proctor resident and a 1937 graduate of Proctor High School who worked at Stewart’s grocery store and the Proctor Journal, died Mon., Feb. 20, 2006 in Benedictine Health Center. She was 86.

She was born on May 1, 1919 in Proctor to Julien and Irma (Popelier) Vangrysperre. Amanda married James P. Neve on Jan. 24, 1942 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Proctor. Amanda was a homemaker, a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and its St. Joseph’s Circle. She was also a longtime member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and was its local president for 20 years. She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and reading. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothing for others and numerous quilts, especially for her grandchildren. Amanda won many Grand Champion ribbons at the South St. Louis County Fair for her jams, jellies, knitting and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James on March 3, 1979, and a sister Mary Gerber.

Survivors include her daughter Judy (Bruce) Gianunzio of Duluth, sons James P. Jr. (Jackie) of Mound, Patrick (Judy) of Esko and Robert (Vicki Jacques) of Proctor, sister Margaret Mortinsen of Proctor, grandchildren Christine (Brian) Kline, Brian Gianunzio, Joe (Brenda) Neve, David (Jesse) Neve, Chad (Kristi) Neve, Ann Neve, Darren Neve and Nicholas Neve, and great-grandchildren Jacob, Matthew, Alexander, Peter, Colin, Sarah, Jonathan, Daniel, Benjamin, Will and Gavin. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by all.

Thanks, Mom, you are the best. Special thanks to the staff at Benedictine Health Center for the care and compassion given to Amanda.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. today, Thurs. in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor, Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiating. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Russell W. Hanson
Russell W. Hanson of Proctor passed away Fri., Feb. 10, 2006 at St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice Unit. He was 90.

He was born in Duluth on Nov. 24, 1915 to Helmer and Marie (Paulson) Hanson. Russell was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed carpenter for the last 60 years proudly working until he was 85.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents and brother Wallace.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Violet Hanson, niece Jeanne (John) McMullen, nephews Dale (Dian) Hanson and Danny Hanson.

Helen M. Kershaw
Gary (Sandy) Kershaw of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Helen M. Kershaw. The Moose Lake resident died Wed., Feb. 15, 2006 in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. She was 87.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene in 1998, brother Virgil Funke, and grandchildren Rebecca Sue Takkunen and Gene Peterson.

Helen will also be remembered by her other children Sharen Kay (Wayne) Peterson of Moose Lake and Judith Ann (Lyle) Takkunen of Cloquet, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Lorraine Funke of Fla., and a niece and nephews.

Services were held Mon., Feb. 20, 2006 in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Moose Lake. Pastor Larry La Dassor officiated. Inurnment in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Moose Lake.

Arthur Allan Abrahamson
Arthur Allan Abrahamson of Munger, who drove school bus for the Proctor School District and was a former candidate for school board, passed away peacefully from a massive stroke Fri., Feb. 24, 2006 at St. Mary’s Hospice surrounded by his family and friends. He was 79.

He was born May 10, 1926 in Duluth to Arthur and Aili (Ahlgren) Abrahamson. Art was a graduate of Denfeld High School. After high school, Art served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Pioneer Tea Co., American National Insurance, and the Duluth News Tribune. Art enjoyed spending his time gardening, he especially loved tending to his roses. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a son, Glen (Abrahamson) Salem.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years Margaret, stepchildren Deric Absher, Dennette Absher and Dawn (Patrick) Walsh, his children Arthur Abrahamson, Colleen (Dave) Christianson and Carolee (Ray) Bertrand, sister Doris Olson, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Monday with Pastor Daniel Holm officiating.
