Jan Symmonds, 84, formerly of New Ulm died Thursday, June 3, 1999 in Lebanon, Ore.
Mass of Christain burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
She is survived by her sister, Lucille Garland of Springfield; and a brother, Louis Frechette of Tracy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Symmonds; a sister, Irene Barnes; and her brother Andre Frechette.
She was born May 17, 1915, in Irwin, Ill. to Ephrem and Marie (Vigneault) Frechette. She graduated from Tracy High School in 1933. She then trained to be a nurse at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Having contracted tuberculosis while a student, she was forced to give up her training. Following treatment, she worked as a photographer's assistant in a portrait studio in New Ulm. She returned to Minneapolis, this time to learn and develop her skills as a portrait colorist and retouch artist. Her work won her recognition of her industry peers and several awards from Professional Photographers of America.
She married Harold Symmonds and returned with him to Astoria, Ore. in 1971. There, she became an active member and Eucharistic Minister at the St. Mary's by the Sea parish. She spent time raising and breeding registered Dachshunds. Upon the death of her husband Harold, she moved to Lebanon, Ore. and then later to Albany, Ore.
Jan had lived for the past four years at Villa Cascade Care Center in Lebanon, Oregon and the Mennonite Home in Albany, Ore.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany, Oregon and also a Catholic Daughter at the church.

Donna M. Leikam, 72, of Searles died Saturday, June 5, 1999 at New Ulm Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Searles with burial in St. John's Catholic Cemetery rural Searles.
Visitation is 4 -9 p.m. today and continues 7:30- 10 a.m. Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Willard Leikam of Searles; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Steve Zupfer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bonnie and Vern Schmitz of St. Cloud, LaNette Leikam of Minneapolis; son, Brian Leikam of Littleton, Colo. ; grandchildren,
Jennifer McKenzie, Shawn Zupfer, Amanda Schmitz, Jessica Schmitz, and Kallie Kociemba; sister, Loretta Laurence of Oakland, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Cliff and Muriel Jeske of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter and son both in infancy.
She was born Dec. 1, 1926 in New Ulm to Herman and Olga (Gutknecht) Jeske. She attended country school in Linden Township, Brown County. She graduated from New Ulm High School in 1944. She attended Mankato State College and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education. On Oct. 20, 1951, she married Willard Leikam at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles. They lived in Searles and she taught country school in the New Ulm area for 17 years before becoming a teacher at New Ulm Public School in 1967. She retired in 1985 but continued to be a substitute teacher in New Ulm, Hanska, and Searles. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Searles, the Christian Mothers Society, a member and past treasurer of the Council of Catholic Women (CCW), a member and current treasurer of the Brown County Retired Teachers Association, and a current member and the first president of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 15 in New Ulm. She was also active at the state level with the DAV where she was an officer. She was a member of the Searles Senior Citizens Club. She had compiled and wrote the Searles 1999 Centennial Book. She was a volunteer for the New Ulm Clothing Depot and at Harkins Store.

Roger Rohlik, 48, of Seaforth died Saturday, June 5, 1999 in Underwood Township, Redwood County, Minnesota.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the American Legion Hall in Seaforth with burial of cremains in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Funeral Home in Echo and continues Thursday one hour prior to services at the Seaforth American Legion Hall.
He is survived by his wife Terri, son Lewis Rohlik and wife Mandy of Belview; daughter Rose Rohlik and fiancee Roger Sward of Franklin, mother Leona Rohlik of Seaforth, four grandchildren; brothers and sisters, JoAnne Bernardy and husband Nick of Lucan, Allen Rohlik and wife Diane of Renville, Mike Rohlik and wife Annette of Lucan, Ed Rohlik and wife Lorraine of Granite Falls, Larry Rohlik and wife Charlene of St. Louis Park, Greg Rohlik and wife Theresa of Wabasso, Mary Rohlik of Willmar, Carol Rohlik of Willmar, Frank Rohlik and special friend Beth Sage of Belview, and Randy Rohlik and wife Linda of Wabasso; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence, and brothers William, Louis, and Kenneth.
He was born May 14, 1951 in Marshall to Lawrence and Leona (Crouse) Rohlik. He attended Vesta Public School. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1969. He entered the U.S. Army in January of 1971 and served for two years and then he served in the Army Reserve. On February 26, 1977 he married Terri Sater in Seaforth. They lived near Lamberton for two years until moving into Seaforth in 1979. He worked as a carpenter for Dale Haag, Harry Horne, Nick Walters, Grain Dryer Services, Fagen Construction and recently worked for the Seaforth Salvage. He was a member of the Ralph Lamb American Legion Post 275 of Seaforth, and served as its commander. He was a member of the Seaforth Volunteer Fire Department of over 20 years, and he served on the Seaforth City Council.

Grace Jorgensen, 82, of Gaylord, died on Friday, June 4, 1999, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ in Gaylord, with burial in the Gaylord Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord and one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Vigness of Mankato, and Dyna and Paul Bents of Green Bay, Wisc.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Isabelle and Ervine Mauch of Meringo, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.
She was born June 14, 1916, in Lamberton, to Milo and Lulu (Meyer) Kenyon. She married Maynard Jorgensen on Oct. 25, 1939 in Chokio. They lived in Sleepy Eye for many years and were very active in the Methodist Church. They moved to Gaylord in 1959. She worked for the Gaylord Good Samaritan Center and later for e Arlington Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 28 years as a nurse's aide. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Gaylord and was active in the Priscilla Circle.

Robert Rickert, 101, of Winthrop, died on Friday, June 4, 1999, at Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Penn Township, rural Brownton, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Josephine, of Hutchinson; daughter, Margaret Lofthus, of Winthrop; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hulda; brother, Fred; son-in-law, Reynold Lofthus; and a granddaughter, Patricia Rickert.
He was born May 15, 1898, in Round Grove Township, Brownton, to Henry and Emma (Kujas) Rickert. He grew up in Round Grove and attended country school.
He married Hulda Furst on May 25, 1920, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township. They farmed in Round Grove Township. He retired from farming in 1946 and moved to Winthrop. He was a sub mail carrier for the Winthrop Post Office for 23 years, starting in 1950. He lived in his home until 1995, then was a resident of Amberfield Apartments and Sibley Estates until December 1998 when he was transferred to the Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop. He was a life member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He held various church offices and sang in the choir. At age 90 he started a tradition by singing a solo in church on his birthdays through age 100. Most recently he sang two solos on his 101th birthday at the Good Samaritan Home.

Cathryn M. Kastanek, 74 of Hillman Township, Morrison County, died May 30, 1999.
Mass of Christian burial were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz.
She is survived by her husband, Jrwin of Hillman; daughters, Colleen of North Branch and Charlotte of Sartell; son, Allen of St. Paul; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was born Nov. 24, 1924 in Lake Hanska Township to George and Eleanor (Dietz) Gulden. She grew up in Pierz where she received her education. She graduated from St. Gabriel's School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1945. She worked at several Minnesota hospitals including Redwood Falls and at one time worked with the Navajo Indian Nation. She retired in 1989. She married Jrwin Kastanek on July 2, 1951. They resided on the family farm in Hillman Township after their marriage. She was active in numerous civic and cultural programs as well as being an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pierz. She was a member of the German-Bohemian Heritage Society.

Elise Klinow, 94 of St. James, formerly of Mountain Lake, died June 5, 1999 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.
Services are 1:30 today at Eifert Funeral Home in Mountain Lake with visitation before the service starting at 8 a.m. Burial is in Springfield City Cemetery.
She is survived by children and their spouses, Lawrence and Marie Kleinow of Meosho, Mo.; Elizabeth and Floyd Johnson of Arlington; Edna and Orval Curry of Taylors Falls; Raymond and Delores Kleinow of Burnsville; Phyllis Roehl and Giles of St. John's, Mich.; and Richard and Lise Kleinow of North Oaks; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sisters, Aliede Evers of Mountain Lake, Fannie and her husband Wesley Werner of Lamberton; brothers, Ben H. Junker, Rudolph and wife Dorothy Junker, all of Mountain Lake, and Uko and his wife, Clara Junker of St. James; sisters-in-law, Ella Junker of Sleepy Eye, and Amanda Junker of Mountain Lake; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Kleinow; two great grandsons; two sisters, Henrietta Junker and Carrie Lingbeek; and two brothers, Henry H. and Gustav H. Junker.
She was born Aug. 21, 1904 in Selma Township, Cottonwood County, to Hinrich and Fenna (Garrels) Junker. On Feb. 26, 1929, she married Albert Martin Kleinow in Comfrey. They farmed near Comfrey until 1968, and lived in Montrose. They retired to Malvern, Ark.; later to Mack's Creek Mo. They returned to Mountain Lake in 1978. She entered Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James in September 1996.

Maynard Beilke, 84, 917 9th South St., in New Ulm died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and continues one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Beilke, a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm; daughters-and-sons in law, Marvis and Donald Winkelmann of Springfield, Mardell and Herman Solle of Rockport, Texas; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and step children and their families.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Eleanor, on March 2, 1967; daughter in infancy; sister, Elaine; and brother, Rueben.
He was born Oct. 27, 1914 in Eden Township, Brown County to August and Rosa (Menk) Beilke. He married Eleanor Dehn on May 15, 1941. He married Esther Patzer Stelter on July 1, 1970. He farmed in Eden and Prairieville townships, Brown County. From 1954 until retirement in 1973, he farmed in Courtland Township, Nicollet County and then moved into New Ulm. He worked as a janitor for many businesses in New Ulm and at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He also drove bus for the New Ulm school district. He was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and had been a past member of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Elders. He had been a resident of St. John Lutheran Home since October of 1998.

Braden Francis Soukup Private family graveside service for Braden Francis Soukup, infant son of Jeremy and Katherine (Meier) Soukup of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Braden was stillborn June 3, 1999, at the Gerald Champion Hospital in Almogordo, N.M.
Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents; maternal grandparents, Tim and Darlene Meier of New Ulm; paternal grandparents, Ron and Donna Soukup of New Ulm; maternal great-grandparents, Arthur and Dorothy Gramstead of Spooner, Wis; paternal great-grandparents, Raymond and Marjori Meier of St. Paul, and Clarence Soukup of Sleepy Eye; and aunts and uncles.

Evan V. Nelson, 80, of Rt. 1, Lafayette died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at New Ulm Medical Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and continues one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Nelson of rural Lafayette; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Don Bentz of Gibbon; sons and daughter-in-law, Darrell Nelson and his fiancee Jo Gergen of New Prague, and Gary and Margaret Nelson of Mankato; seven grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Erna Nelson of Lafayette, Morris and Lailah Nelson of Winthrop, Kenneth and Opal Nelson of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Selma Olson of the Lafayette Good Samaritan Center; and brother-in-law, Clarence Kuehn of New Mexico
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Nelson; and a sister, Verna Foster.
He was born Dec. 15, 1918 in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County to Christ and Emily (Monson) Nelson. He married Mabel Kuehn on July 7, 1946 at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter. They lived in Brighton Township for two years. In 1948 they purchased a farm in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. He farmed until 1978. He also worked at Luebbert Construction in New Ulm for five years, Moorhead Construction for four years, and Lafayette Co-op for five years. He served on the Lafayette School Board, Swan Lake Lutheran Church Council, Bernadotte Lutheran Church Council, Bernadotte Creamery Board, Bernadotte Locker Board, Nicollet County ASC Committee and as chairman of Nicollet County Farmers Union. He was a member of the Bernadotte Town Board for 26 years. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, mostly in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte.
In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to Bernadotte Church Mission Fund or the Cancer Society or to the donor's choice.

Bill Macklin, who chronicled the life and happenings in New Ulm as editor of The New Ulm Daily Journal from 1951 to 1979, died Tuesday morning in a nursing home in Pine River. He was 81 years old.
Macklin, whose career in journalism included stints with the Associated Press in London, St. Louis and Kansas City, found his home and the place to practice his craft in New Ulm. It was a place to raise his three children, and to write the kind of news he loved -- human interest stories and reports on the people and their doings that may not be earth-shaking, but which shape a town. After his retirement in 1979 he continued writing about the little things in life around him near his retirement home on Ten Mile lake near Hackensack. He described the joys of family visits, fishing, harvesting wild rice or collecting maple sap for syrup, and winters in the north woods until his pen was stilled by Alzheimer's disease, which was diagnosed in 1991.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas-Dennis Funeral Home in Walker, with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Congregational Church in Hackensack.
He is survived by his wife Judy, his children, Scott County District Judge Bill Macklin Jr., Tom Macklin and Judy Macklin.
Macklin was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He moved to Minneapolis at the age of six when his father went to medical school, then moved to with his family to Litchfield, where he graduated in 1935.
He was editor of his school paper in high school and worked as a correspondent for the West Central Tribune in Willmar.
His interest in journalism took him to the prestigious University of Missouri School of Journalism. He was editor of the school newspaper his senior year, and a correspondent for the Associated Press. After graduation he went to work for a newspaper in Springfield, Mo., for a short time before hooking on with the AP. He moved into the AP's St. Louis bureau until he was drafted in 1941.
He joined the Army Corps of Engineers. While stationed in Florida he met Elaine "Becky" Beckstrom, who was serving in the SPARS, the women's corps of the Coast Guard. They were married, he was sent to Europe and she went home to Kansas. In September 1946 she gave birth to their son, Bill Jr, who was appointed as a district judge in Scott County after serving in the Minnesota Legislature. When Macklin was discharged from the Army after the war, he landed a job covering sports for the AP in London. Becky and Bill Jr. joined him there, and they lived in England for four years. Their daughter Susan was born there in 1948. Their son, Tom, was born in New Ulm in 1954.
Macklin returned to the United States, working in the AP bureau in Kansas City until 1951, when he was hired as editor by New Ulm Daily Journal publisher Walt Mickelson. He remained editor for 28 years, the longest tenure of any Journal editor before or since.
