HANNIBAL ­ John W. Holman, 43, of Hannibal, died at 1:36 p.m. Jan. 3, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services are pending at James O'Donnell Funeral Home.

Everett Fredrick Bell

BOWLING GREEN ­ Everett Fredrick Bell, 69, of Curryville, died Jan. 3, 2000, at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Kirks Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green.

Mr. Bell was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Ashley to Herman and Sallie Parsons Bell.

He was married to Dorothy McQuay. She survives.

Also surviving are seven sons, Guilford Hawkins, Larry Hawkins and Donnie Bell, all of Boise, Ind., Nathan Hawkins and Michael Bell, both of Quincy, Ill., Darrell Bell of Bowling Green and Julius Jerome Bell of Hannibal; seven daughters, Patricia Fuller of Des Moines, Iowa, Shelia Thompsons and Leslie Bell, both of Hunnewell, Janet Baker of Hannibal, Kathy Dyson of New London, Kelly Gadsden of South Carolina and Lisa Rouse of Quincy, Ill.; 46 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Richard E. Kean

HANNIBAL ­ Richard E. Kean, 61, of Hannibal, died at 12:31 p.m. Jan. 7, 2000 at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Graveside services for Mr. Kean will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. The Rev. Ron Allen will officiate.

Mr. Kean was born Aug. 13, 1938, in Quincy, Ill., to Wilburn and Helen Ruth Billings Kean.

Survivors include two brothers, Jerry D. Kean of Nathalie, Va., and Dwaine C. Kean of Chase City, Va.; and two sisters, Diana Allen and Tina Philbert, both of Hannibal.

Memorials may be made to the Hannibal Nutrition Center.

Honorary pallbearers will be Philip Allen, Jeremy Allen, Joe Ogden and Eric Woodside.

William C. Kaden

PALMYRA ­ William C. Kaden, 84, of West Ely, died at 9:40 a.m. Jan. 7, 2000, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.

Funeral services for Mr. Kaden will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Ely. The Rev. Kenneth Schamber will officiate. Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in West Ely.

Mr. Kaden was born July 30, 1915, in Marion County to Godfrey and Martha Schmedt Kaden.

He was married to Marie Lehenbauer on Nov. 7, 1942, in Monroe City. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Carl W. Kaden of Hannibal, Norman Kaden of Macon and Melvin Kaden of Palmyra; one daughter, Kathy Dent of St. Charles; one brother, Fred Kaden of Monroe City; one sister, Dorothy Bethke of Buffalo, Minn.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kaden was a dairy farmer in the West Ely community for most of his life. He retired recently due to ill health. He had attended Immanuel Lutheran School in West Ely. Mr. Kaden was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Ely.

Visitation for Mr. Kaden will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery.

Lorene Mae Bartling

KIRKSVILLE ­ Lorene Mae Bartling, 86, of Kirksville and formerly of Hannibal, died Jan. 2, 2000, at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bartling were Jan. 5 at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville. Ed McCurley officiated. A graveside service was Jan. 5 at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. The Rev. Walter Reed officiated.

Mrs. Bartling was born June 20, 1913, in Marion County to Charles and Edna Steele Creason.

She was married to Carl Bartling on Sept. 13, 1934. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons, John Bartling of Kirksville, George Bartling of Panama City, Fla., and Okinawa, Japan, Carl Bartling of Lake Charles, La., and Jim Bartling of Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, June Moore of Lake Saint Louis; one brother, Arthur Creason of Hannibal; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Bartling graduated from high school in Ilasco, lived most of her life in Hannibal and was a homemaker/care giver. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Hannibal where she was active with the church nursery for a number of years. She moved to Kirksville in 1988 to make her home and was a member of the First Christian Church where she was involved with the nursery and Bible study group.

Memorials may be made to the Adair County Library Building Fund, in care of the Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, Mo. 63501.

Mary Frances Amberg

QUINCY, Ill. ­ Mary Frances Amberg, 59, of Quincy, Ill. died at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 5, 2000, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Funeral services for Ms. Amberg will be at noon Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Quincy. The funeral procession will leave the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. John Carberry will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Quincy.

Ms. Amberg was born March 20, 1940, in Hannibal to Albert and Anna Sunderlik Venditti.

Survivors include her mother of Ilasco; one son, Michael C. Amberg of St. Louis; and one sister, Armenia Engelmeyer of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her father; and infant twin sons.

Ms. Amberg worked as a secretary and receptionist for the Hannibal Police Department for two years. She most recently worked part-time in the deli at County Market in Quincy. She received a certificate in secretarial training from Gem City Business College in Quincy.

Ms. Amberg was of the Catholic faith and attended Transitions.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m., today at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Transitions or Blessing Hospital.

Edward L. DeLaPorte

HANNIBAL ­ Edward L. DeLaPorte, 78, of Hannibal, died at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 4, 2000, at Willow Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services for Mr. DeLaPorte will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Free Methodist Church in Hannibal. The Rev. Dan Parry will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Mr. DeLaPorte was born April 16, 1921, in Ralls County to Julius J. and Edna Mae Webster DeLaPorte.

He was married to Stella V. Kerns on Oct. 5, 1940, in Hannibal. She preceded him in death May 27, 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Charles DeLaPorte of Hazelwood and Marvin DeLaPorte of San Jose, Calif.; two brothers, Carl DeLaPorte of Albuquerque, N.M., and Richard DeLaPorte of Hannibal; four sisters, Mildred McCuan of Sutters Creek, Calif., Virginia Sagitto of Imperial, Glenna Rothweiler of Crystal City and Donna Conrad of Hannibal; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Mr. DeLaPorte was retired after having worked for more than 40 years in Hannibal as an auto mechanic. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Memorials may be made to the Free Methodist Church of Hannibal.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Smith, Charles DeLaPorte, Donnie DeLaPorte, Maurice Leap Jr., Jerry Conrad and Robert DeLaPorte.

Clayton Gosney

MONROE CITY ­ Howard Clayton Gosney, 78, of Monroe City, died at 3:50 a.m. Jan. 5, 2000, following a structure fire at his home.

Funeral services for Mr. Gosney will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. The Rev. Kenneth Schamber will officiate. Burial will be at the Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Marion County.

Mr. Gosney was born July 17, 1921 in Shelby County to Yancey Howard and Ora Helen McGaffin Gosney.

He was married to Phyllis June SeCoy Nov. 21, 1942 in Hannibal. She preceded him in death Oct. 11, 1994.

Survivors include three daughters, Naomi Elliott of Palmyra, Bonnie Miles of Quincy and Leta Faye Schenck of Hannibal; nine grandchildren, Tessy Buckman, Howard Schenck, Zelda Schenck, Troy Platt, Paula Sue Lindquist, Heather Miles, Clay Foster, Kenneth Foster and Steven Foster; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Gosney of Monroe City.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Durad Earl Gosney.

Mr. Gosney attended the Hunnewell School and was a member of the Union Chapel Methodist Church in Shelby County. He was a Marion County farmer and stockman for many years before retiring in 1990. He assisted in building many homes and buildings with the L.L. Wood Construction Co. of Monroe City. He moved to Monroe City in September 1998.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Pallbearers will be Troy Platt, Howard Schenck, Clay Foster, Kenneth Foster, Steven Foster and Brad Watson.

Edward L. DeLaPorte

HANNIBAL - Edward L. DeLaPorte, 78, of Hannibal, died at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 4, 2000, at Willow Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services for Mr. DeLaPorte are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Beulah (Bea) Trumbo

CLARENCE ­ Beulah (Bea) Trumbo, 84, of Clarence, died at 6 p.m. Jan. 3, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Funeral services for Mrs. Trumbo will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Clarence. David Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, Calif.

Mrs. Trumbo was born June 6, 1915, in Mound Valley, Kan., to Samuel Theadore and Minnie Mae Gwartney King.

She was married to Robert Trumbo on April 24, 1957, in Las Vegas, Nev. He survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Vivian Schuman of Clarence; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother; and three sisters.

Mrs. Trumbo was a Baptist by faith. She had been a claims adjuster for the U.S. government in California.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Clarence Nutrition site.

Virginia Drake

SHELBINA ­ Virginia Drake, 97, of Shelbyville, died at 2:25 p.m. Jan. 4, 2000, at Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina.

Funeral services for Mrs. Drake will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Shelbina. Entombment will be at the Shelbina Mausoleum.

Mrs. Drake was born Oct. 29, 1902, near Lentner to Henry and Mary Neuschafer von Thun.

She was married to Mark Hanna Drake on June 6, 1925, in Quincy, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1957.

Survivors include one daughter, Cara von Short of Springfield, Ill.; one son, Ned J. Drake of Roseville, Calif.; six grandsons, Bentley Drake, Sherman Drake and Barry Drake, Mark Short, Matthew Short and Jonathon Short; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna Gibson, Helen Miller, Bertha Clark and Mary Evelyn Schwada.

Mrs. Drake attended Freeman Rural School, was a 1921 graduate of Shelbyville High School, continued her education at Missouri University, Polytechnical Junior College in Kansas City, Mo., Kirksville Teachers College and received a degree in education from Culver-Stockton College in Canton. She taught a number of years in Shelby County and also taught in Concordia Public School in Concordia and Becky-David Elementary School in St. Charles. She was an active member of the Shelbyville Baptist Church and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Retired Teachers Association and Chapter M PEO.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home in Shelbina.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Pallbearers will be Mark E. Short, Matthew B. Short, Jonathan Short, Ken Patterson, Herb Short and Rogers Hewitt.

Gary Dale Ness

PARIS ­ Gary Dale Ness, 52, of Paris, died Jan. 2, 2000, at Moberly Regional Hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Ness will be at 10 a.m. today at the Agnew Funeral Home in Paris. Burial will be at the Asher Cemetery in St. James, with graveside services at 2:30 p.m. Pastor Herbert Mathews will officiate. Fellowship for the family will be at the Winkler Baptist Church after the services.

Mr. Ness was born Feb. 14, 1947, in Cook Station to Wayne and Mary Ness.

He was married to Anita Kay Whitson on Nov. 26, 1975. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Jason Robert Ness of Columbia; his mother of Cook Station; three brothers, Stanley Ness of Columbia, and Larry Ness and Dewey Ness, both of Cook Station; and two sisters, Ruth of St. James and Francis of Salem.

Mr. Ness attended high school in Steelville and entered the U.S. Army at the age of 17, where he earned his GED. He served his country in the U.S. Army where he obtained the rank of SP4. He was honorably discharged as a Vietnam War veteran, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and was classified as an expert M-16, sharpshooter pistol 45 and sharpshooter M-14.

Mr. Ness and his wife spent several years in Wichita, Kan., and Dodge City, Kan., where he worked heavy equipment and spent his spare time with his family and racing race cars. After moving to Missouri, he went to work as a heavy equipment operator and valued the friendship of his employer J.D. Kelly. Mr. Ness and his wife owned farms in Paris and Clarence, where they raised Simmental cattle. Mr. Ness enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, and caring for the cattle with his wife.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
