Ivan L. Ryan

HANNIBAL ­ Ivan L. Ryan, 90, of Hannibal, died at 7:41 p.m. Jan. 15, 2000, at Beth-Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Father Mike Quinn will officiate. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Monroe City.

Mr. Ryan was born March 25, 1909, in Monroe City to Frank Daniel and Elizabeth Kline Ryan.

He was married to Amelia Whitley on May 25, 1937, in Hamilton, Ill. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Marilyn Galipo of Kansas City; one stepdaughter, June M. Sass of Quincy, Ill.; two brothers, Louis Ryan and Vernon Ryan, both of Monroe City; one sister, Sister Mary Gregory Ryan, O.S.F., of Wheaton, Ill.; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude McMullen, Velma Ryan and Esther Duffy; and two brothers, Carl Ryan and Cecil Ryan.

Mr. Ryan was a retired machinist. He had formerly worked at Gates and Gardner-Denver in Quincy. He also had worked in the Kansas City area.

Mr. Ryan was a member of Holy Family Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation will be from noon until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Joe McMullen, Jack Ryan, Phillip Ryan, Mike Ryan, Nick Ryan and Jamie Ryan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Ryan and Paul (Gene) Ryan.

Wilma Irene Walker

EWING ­ Wilma Irene Walker, 83, of Ewing, died at 8:16 p.m. Jan. 15, 2000, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing. Brother Tim Smith will officiate. Burial will be at Ewing Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Walker was born April 21, 1916, in Ewing to Fred and Ethal Watkins Fohrman.

She was married to Edward Sheridan. He preceded her in death. She was later married to Alton Walker. He also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Sheridan and Stephen Walker, both of Ewing; two grandchildren, Nikole Willer of Liberty, Ill., and Eric Sheridan of Ewing; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur Fohrman; and one grandson, Kent Sheridan.

Mrs. Walker was a beautician in the Quincy, Ill., and Denver area for several years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ewing.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends after 6 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Resources, Lewis County Health Department or First Baptist Church in Ewing.

Alma Nesbitt

HANNIBAL ­ Alma L. Nesbitt, 81, of Hannibal, died at 4:13 p.m. Jan. 14, 2000, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at James O'Donnell Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Mrs. Nesbitt was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Ilasco to Oren and Lela Carpenter Lease.

She was married to B.L. Nesbitt on June 24, 1939, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death Jan. 30, 1972.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Waelder of Hannibal; one son, Wayne Nesbitt of Hannibal; one sister, Wanda Kilby of Hannibal; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Ham and Velma Lease; and one infant brother.

Mrs. Nesbitt had worked for the S.S. Kresge Co. and retired from the Hannibal public schools, after working in the cafeteria at both Eugene Field and Stowell schools.

She was a member of South Side Christian Church.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to South Side Christian Church.

Pallbearers will be Alan Waelder, David Waelder, Deanie Waelder, Michael Nesbitt, Cody Nesbitt, Troy Nesbitt and Lisa Waelder LeFort.

Edna Barnes

ELSBERRY ­ Edna Ruth Barnes, 89, of Elsberry, died Jan. 16, 2000, at the Elsberry Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.

Mrs. Barnes was born July 19, 1910, in Poplar Bluff to John and Mary Scates.

She was married to Henry LeRoy (Bud) Barnes on Sept. 13, 1939, in Palmyra. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1989.

Survivors include one son, James Barnes of Elsberry; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Gene Barnes; three brothers, Harry Scates, George Scates and Melvin Scates; and three sisters, Faye White, Mary Ellen Boeger and Ida Grace Wilcox.

Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and a former member of the Elsberry Garden Club.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 South Fifth St., Elsberry, Mo. 63343.

Wilma G. McCartney

BARRY, Ill. ­ Wilma G. McCartney, 80, of Barry, Ill., died at 8:53 p.m. Jan. 16, 2000, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry.

Mrs. McCartney was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Hannibal to Bert and Sadie Evans Gibbons.

She was married to Walter L. McCartney on Oct. 7, 1945, in Hannibal. He survives.

Other survivors include two sisters, Marge Jeffrey of Palm Dale, Calif., and Iva Wordley of Lynwood, Calif.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill Gibbons, John Gibbons, Virgil Gibbons and Herbert Gibbons; and three sisters, Mary Bagby, Nancy Roach and Betty Cooper.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Evelyn Thurman-Rufener

CLARENCE ­ Mary Evelyn Thurman-Rufener, 75, of Clarence, died at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 13, 2000, at her home in Clarence.

Memorial services for Mrs. Thurman-Rufener will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Clarence. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery in Clarence. Jack Magruder will deliver the eulogy and Beryl Cragg will officiate at the cemetery.

Mrs. Thurman-Rufener was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Shelbyville to William Evertt and Nellie Maude Neff Thurman.

She was married to Robert Rufener on Aug. 1, 1947, in Clarence. He survives.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Leon Thurman, Karl Elman Thurman and Darrell LeRoy Thurman.

Mrs. Thurman-Rufener was an international champion baton twirler, performing and judging in competition throughout the nation. She was also involved in Sigma Sigma Sigma at Kirksville University. In 1943 she assumed the responsibilities of teaching and later founded Beta Tau Delta, an honor society for twirlers whose motto was "Where twirling links learning to living." She also co-founded the Karl Elman Thurman and Mary Evelyn Thurman Memorial Scholarship at Truman State University.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Eugene Durward Sizemore Sr.

LOUISIANA ­ Eugene Durward Sizemore Sr., 91, of Louisiana, died Jan. 14, 2000, at the home of his daughter in Topeka, Kan.

Funeral services for Mr. Sizemore will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Louisiana. The Rev. Jay Frost will officiate. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana.

Mr. Sizemore was born Sept. 17, 1908, in Louisiana to Ernest M. Sizemore and Nina S. Betwars Sizemore.

He was married to Jessie D. Johnson on March 1, 1942, in Louisiana. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Eugene D. Sizemore Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Cynthia Diane Agler of Topeka, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Sizemore started his career in men's retail clothing as part-owner of the Jones Clothing Store in Louisiana. He later owned and operated Sizemore Furniture and Floor Covering in Louisiana until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Louisiana. He was a member of the Louisiana Elks Lodge No. 791, a third degree Mason and had been a member of Perseverance Lodge No. 92 in Louisiana for more than 50 years.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana.

Memorials may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church front entrance fund, in care of Collier Funeral Home, 117 Barnard Drive, Louisiana, Mo. 63353.

Zella Ruth Riding

HANNIBAL ­ Zella Ruth Riding, 70, of Hannibal, died at 7:25 a.m. Jan. 17, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Dorothy M. Akers

QUINCY, Ill. ­ Dorothy M. Akers, 61, of Hannibal, died at 9:45 a.m. Jan. 16, 2000, at her home.

A private family graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, Ill. The Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate.

Mrs. Akers was born April 5, 1938, in Quincy to Charles and Sylvia Pearl Wood Clarkson.

She was married to Eugene D. Akers on March 16, 1968, in Hannibal. He survives.

Other survivors include one brother, Charles (Sonny) Clarkson of Quincy; and two sisters, Sharon Brassell of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sylvia P. Clarkson of Hannibal.

There will be no visitation.

The James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

J. Marvin Shocklee

SILEX ­ J. Marvin Shocklee, 83, of Silex, died Jan. 18, 2000, at the St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Millwood. Father John Mayer will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Mr. Shocklee was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Silex to William Everett and Lula Elizabeth Mudd Shocklee.

He was married to Mary Roberts on July 1, 1946, in Millwood. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Robert Shocklee of Troy; two daughters, Mary Dianne Shocklee of Montgomery City and Carolyn Ann Shocklee of St. Charles; three sisters, Darlene Mudd and Kathleen Roberts, both of Silex, and Delores Carboni of Stark, Fla.; and three granddaughters, Kim Shocklee, Elizabeth Shocklee and Katherine Shocklee.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Joseph Shocklee.

Mr. Shocklee was a lifelong resident of the Silex area where he was a grain and livestock farmer. He was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a member of the Millwood Knights of Columbus Council No. 2009. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. at the Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Silex.

Memorials may be made to the St. Alphonsus School or Masses.

Carl F. Gerding

TROY ­ Carl F. Gerding, 73, of Hawk Point, died Jan. 17, 2000, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy. The Rev. David Stewart will officiate. Burial will be at Warrenton Cemetery in Warrenton.

Mr. Gerding was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Warrenton to Florence William and Luella Brose Gerding.

Survivors include one sister, Doris Gerding of Hawk Point; a special aunt, Rosie Gerding of Troy; and an uncle, Charles Gerding of Dittmer.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph L. Gerding.

Mr. Gerding had been a farmer and cattleman in Hawk Point for more than 60 years.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, and from noon until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice, in care of McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy.

Pallbearers will be James Gerding, Ralph Gerding Jr., Tom Gerding, William Gerding, Paul Weinrich and Jerry Weinrich.
