Jan. 8, 1911 ­ Dec. 31, 2000

SHELBINA ­ Opal Gander, 89, of Shelbina and formerly of Leonard, died at approximately 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Leonard Christian Church. The Rev. Jim Bilbro will officiate. Burial will be at Leonard Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Gander was born Jan. 8, 1911, in Shelby County to Pierce and Anna Belle Winget Oaks.

She was married to Raymond Gander in May 1927. He preceded her in death April 11, 1999.

Survivors include two sisters, Leone Guarjdo of Brea, Calif., and Ilene Perrigo of Edina.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Duff; and one infant sister.

Mrs. Gander had worked at restaurants in Leonard and Bethel. She also worked at the Senior Citizens Nutrition Site in Shelbina.

She was a member of Leonard Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to Leonard Cemetery.

Helen Eichschlag
April 19, 1903 ­ Dec. 29, 2000

SHELBINA ­ Helen Eichschlag, 97, of Shelbina and formerly of St. Louis, died at approximately 11:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelbina. Father Chris Cordes will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Florissant.

No visitation is planned. Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eichschlag was born April 19, 1903, in St. Louis to Walter and Eleanor Cartan Workman.

She was married to Harold Earl Eichschlag on Sept. 2, 1926. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Delores Schilling of Florissant and Sally Lorey of Shelbina; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Louise; two sons, John Eichschlag and Donald Eichschlag; one grandson, Steven Schilling; and two great-grandsons.

Mrs. Eichschlag had worked for the U.S. government in an ammunition plant.

She was a member of Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Florissant.

Memorials may be made to Salt River Nursing Home.

Hensil (Hank) Peak
Dec. 27, 1933 ­ Dec. 30, 2000

BOWLING GREEN ­ Hensil (Hank) Peak, 67, of Bowling Green, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green. John Veach will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Frankford.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Peak was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Pulaska, Va., to Henry Jackson and Effie Cox Peak.

Survivors include four sons, Brian K. Peak of St. Charles, Curtis Lee Peak of Bowling Green, Danny Peak of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Dennis Peak of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Brenda Kay Peak of Wellsville; three brothers, Estil D. Peak and Henry J. Peak, both of the state of Pennsylvania, and Jerry W. Peak of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Jewel M. Kino of Litchfield, Ohio, and Jeraldine Oliver of Cleveland; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur J. Peak and Kenneth Peak; and one sister, Eula Maxine Muscatello.

Mr. Peak lived in Pulaska, Va., until serving in the U.S. Army.

He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he lived until moving to Bowling Green 15 years ago.

Mr. Peak was a Baptist by faith. He was an avid walleye fisherman.

Memorials may be made to the Hank Peak family.

Pallbearers will be Justin Peak, Michael Peak, Ellis Perkins, Tom Hays, John Denk and Bill Parrott.

Anna M. Glover
Jan. 25, 1913 ­ Dec. 30, 2000

HANNIBAL ­ Anna M. Glover, 87, of Quincy, Ill., and formerly of Hannibal, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hannibal. Pastor Richard Ingmire will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church.

James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Glover was born Jan. 25, 1913, in West Ely to Everett C. and Gertrude Bick Tillitt.

She was married to Earl J. Schnitzlein in March 1939. He preceded her in death Sept. 10, 1962. She was later married to Calvin F. Glover on May 31, 1979, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death Oct. 8, 1991.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Nauber of Quincy, Ill.; one stepson, Earl L. Schnitzlein of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and five stepgrandchildren.

The family wishes to include as survivors one son-in-law, Bill Nauber of Quincy; and one stepdaughter-in-law, Virginia Schnitzlein of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert J. Schnitzlein; and one brother, Robert J. Tillitt.

Mrs. Glover was retired from Sears, where she had worked for 16 years. She later worked part-time at Wards.

Mrs. Glover was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers will be Bill Tucker, John Niehoff, Dick Altheide, Walter Hunt, Al Lehenbauer and Pastor Richard Ingmire.

Mary E. Dowell
Oct. 21, 1921 - Jan. 28, 2001

MONROE CITY ­ Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Dowell, 80, of Monroe City, died at 7:24 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. The Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate. Burial will be at St. Jude Cemetery in Monroe City.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dowell was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Marion County to James and Burda Jewell Tully Finney.

She was married to Alfred Lee (Bo) Dowell on Dec. 22, 1942, in Monroe City. He preceded her in death May 29, 1982.

Survivors include two sons, Alfred (Sonny) Dowell and Harold (Shorty) Dowell, both of Monroe City; two daughters, Pat Gupton and Carol James, both of Monroe City; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harold D. Finnery of Hanceville, Ala.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Thomas and Richard Eugene Dowell; one brother, Jake Spencer; and one sister, Dorothy Colliver.

Mrs. Dowell attended Hunnewell grade schools and graduated from Monroe City High School. She worked for Henderson Produce Co. in Monroe City, she and her husband farmed and she also worked for her son at the Dowell Coop Service Station for many years. She was a member of the Monroe City VFW and the Rebekahs. She was an avid bowler.

Memorials may be made to the Monroe City VFW.

Pallbearers will be Sam Potterfield, Kenny Taft, Stan Thompson, Daren Dowell, Jon Gupton and Scott Dowell.

Marie Deagen Shulse
Feb. 1, 1911 ­ Jan. 27, 2001

PERRY ­ Marie Deagen Shulse, 89, of Mexico and formerly of Perry, died at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry. The Rev. Dale Jorgenson will officiate. Burial will be at Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until time of services today at the funeral home.

Ms. Shulse was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Center to Roy Clifford and Daisy Madge Stuller Shulse.

Survivors include one brother, Woodrow Shulse of King George, Va.; and four sisters, Alma Burneita Clark, Edna Drake and Lila Mae Poyser, all of Perry, and Margaret Ruth Shields Snow of Lamar.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Lee Shulse, Eugene Clark Shulse and Wade Alfred Shulse; and one sister, Helen Ailene Hogg.

Ms. Shulse had been a machine operator at factories in Kansas City and in Texas.

She was reared in the Perry area and graduated from Center High School. She returned to the area after her retirement.

Ms. Shulse was a military veteran, who had served at the rations office at Camp Davis Air Force Base in North Carolina. She had lived at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico for the past several years.

Ms. Shulse was a member of Vandalia Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Ralls County OATS organization, Retired Senior and Volunteer Program, Perry DAR and Perry Senior Citizens. She enjoyed making quilts.

Memorials may be made in care of Jane Zimmerman, Box 342, Perry, Mo. 63462.

Pallbearers will be Richard Poyser, Louis Ames, Donald Ames, Mike Todd, Leonard Zimmerman and Max Tilt.

Marianna Foster Lewis
April 20, 1926 ­ Jan. 19, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ Marianna Foster Lewis, 74, of Hannibal, died at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lewis will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Park United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jan Bond will officiate. Burial will be at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry, Ill.

The Smith Funeral Chapel in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lewis was born April 20, 1926, in Hannibal, to Jesse and Anna Hart Foster. She was married to Ike N. Lewis on June 27, 1964, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1991.

Survivors include one son, Harvey Lewis, New London; two daughters, Sherryl Kelley, Blue Springs, and Tammy Dye, Chillicothe; four grandchildren, Brian Dye and Brice Dye, both of Chillicothe, Lacey Fertch, New London, and Jessica Kelley, Blue Springs; and two sisters, Bernice Rushton, Fort Meyers, Fla., and Helen Biselx, Eldon.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Byers.

Mrs. Lewis was a beauty operator at the Mark Twain Hotel for many years. In 1976 she opened the Ice Cream Parlor and Cheese Shop at 318 N. Main St., in the Historic District. She retired in the spring of 2000.

During World War II she served as secretary for a U.S. Government office in Washington, D.C. She was a 1944 graduate of Hannibal High School and a member of the Park United Methodist Church. She was one of the founders of the Hannibal Arts and Craft Association and Shows.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or to the organization or charity of the donor's choice.

Pallbearers will be Mike Haught, Ron Haught Jr., Bob Mitchell, David Tate, Hamer Tate and Mark Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Dye and Brice Dye.

Barney E. Hatfield

Canton Dec. 3, 1922 ­ Jan. 19, 2001

CANTON ­ Barney Eugene Hatfield, 78, of Canton, died at 3:44 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Boone County Hospital in Columbia.

Funeral services for Mr. Hatfield will be at 2 p.m. today at the Butler-Fulton Nickles Funeral Home, 22 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services. Burial will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.

A memorial visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.

Mr. Hatfield was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Kansas City, Kan., to Charles and Esther Beatrice Loomen Hatfield.

Survivors include a close friend for more than 20 years, Ruth Ann Wolf of Canton; one son, Barney Eugene Hatfield Jr., Excelsior Springs; two daughters, Deanna Lou Gramling and Debbie Petersheim of Sturgeon; five stepchildren, Stephenson D. Edwards of Kansas City, Mo., Alan Wolf, Sue Wolf and Kim McDermott, all of Canton, and Lynna Miller, Montreal, Mo.; one brother, Robert Hatfield; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Margaret I. Golian
Jan. 3, 1918 - Jan. 2, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ Margaret I. Golian, 82, of Frankford, died at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Grand View Funeral Chapel in Hannibal. The Rev. Edwin Hampton will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Golian was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Ashburn to George A. and Naomi I. Stout Ploesser.

She was married to Andrew Golian in 1948 in St. Louis. He survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Larry Dean Jolley of Laddonia, Gary S. Jolley of Perry and David A. Golian of Center; two daughters, Carol Harrison of Mexico and Margaret Ann Cook of Frankford; one brother, George A. Ploesser of Bowling Green; two sisters, Marie Patrick of Hannibal and Louetta Jones of East Alton, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by an infant son; and one grandchild, Deanna Marie Jennings.

Mrs. Golian was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Ashburn and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Memorials may be made to the Pike County Home Health Agency or the Pike Pioneer Meals on Wheels.

Pallbearers will be Brad Cook, Doug Jennings, Keith Golian, Andrew Golian, Mark Jennings, Mike Jones, Jeffrey Jennings, Garrett Jolley, Steve Jolley and Shannon Jolley.
