HANNIBAL - Hugh Marvin Haskins, 71, of Hannibal, died at 3:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Dorothy J. Winhold

PALMYRA - Dorothy J. Winhold, 94, of Palmyra, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.

The Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra is in charge of arrangements.

John R. Abbey Jr.
Dec. 12, 1947 - Jan. 17, 2002

HANNIBAL - John R. Abbey Jr., 54, of Hannibal, died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Graveside services, with military honors by the Clarence Woodson American Legion Post 155, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Hope Cemetery in Hannibal. President Matt Shuck will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Mr. Abbey was born Dec. 12, 1947, in Lincoln, Neb., to John R. and Clara Minter Abbey Sr.

He was married to Maria A. Robinson on March 9, 1996. She survives.

Other survivors include his mother, Clara Jones of Hannibal; two sons, Walter Johnson of Champaign, Ill., and Aaron Norfolk of Fulton; five daughters, Robin Wells and Michelle Watson, both of Davenport, Iowa, Victoria Johnson of Quincy, Ill., Katrina Ballard of Bowling Green and Taylena Norfolk of Fulton; six brothers, Boyd L. Snoddy of the state of Illinois, Virgil L. Snoddy of Hannibal, Randolph Snoddy of Moberly, Irvin Childs of St. Louis, Dennis Childs of Macon and Robert Childs of Fulton; four sisters, Mary King of Columbia, Teanna Snoddy of Hannibal, Michelle Donnan of Peoria, Ill., and Rhonda Kerr of Vandalia; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Abbey was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam war. He worked for Ferro-sil in Keokuk, Iowa and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Lon B. Smith
Nov. 30, 1916 - Jan. 17, 2002

SHELBINA - Lon B. Smith, 85, of Quincy, Ill., died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Leonard Cemetery. The Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina is in charge of services.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Leonard to Munro and Neoma Burges Smith.

Survivors include one sister, Marjorie Stuart of Quincy; one sister-in-law, Ethel Smith of Hanna City, Ill.; one brother-in-law, John McEwen of Leonard; and his companion, Jan Torbeck of Quincy.

The family wishes to include as survivors, nieces and nephews who were very special to him; and some very special friends, Dottie Huseman and John Bestman, both of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn McEwen; and two brothers, Gary Smith and Fred Smith.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Leonard Christian Church and a 1934 graduate of Leonard High School. He lived most of his adult life in Quincy working at Moorman's Manufacturing Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 with ETO with Company C 47th Infantry 9th Division Combat Infantry. He was a member of Lambert Lodge 659, Quincy Shrine Club, Quincy VFW and Quincy Moose Lodge.

Memorials may be made to the Leonard Cemetery Fund or Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.

Hazelee Barr
July 30, 1907 - Jan. 21, 2002

HANNIBAL - Hazelee Barr, 94, of New London, died at 12:50 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Levering Regional Health Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Hannibal. The Rev. Steve Lake will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Barr was born July 30, 1907, in Pike County to Willie and Addie Houchin Sparks.

She was married to Clifford F. Barr on Dec. 20, 1930, in Hannibal. He survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Lawina L. (Tike) Harlow of Edina; three grandchildren, Dennis Harlow of Edina, Cheryl Solari of St. Louis and Cathy Moore of Charleston, Ill.; six great-granddaughters; one stepgreat-grandson; and two stepgreat-great grandchildren.

The family wishes to include as survivors, one son-in-law, John Harlow; one granddaughter-in-law, Rita Harlow; and two grandsons-in-law, Mark Solari and Scott Moore.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gene Barr; and one brother, Rollie Sparks.

The Barrs farmed for many years in Ralls County before making their home in New London. Mrs. Barr was a member of the First Christian Church in Hannibal and was active for many years in the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 550, New London. She also served as deputy grand matron of Missouri.

Memorials may be made to Levering Regional Health Care Center.

Robert E. Hammel
Aug. 9, 1929 - Jan. 21, 2002

KEOKUK, Iowa - Robert (Bobby) Eugene Hammel, 72, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk. The Rev. Bill Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ill.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with family meeting friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. An Elks memorial service will be at 7 p.m.

Mr. Hammel was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Keokuk to Oscar J. and Louise Dietrich Hammel.

He was married to Alice Brown on Jan. 20, 1950, in Keokuk. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Conn of Hannibal and Linda Hammel of Keokuk; two sisters, Betty Morgan and Shirley Bell, both of Keokuk; three brothers, Bill Hammel of Bettendorf, Iowa, Lester Hammel of Keokuk and Chuck Hammel of Hamilton, Ill.; five grandchildren, Todd Conn, Trevor Conn, Tanner Conn, Denise Holmes and Shawn Holmes; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia LeMaster and two in infancy; and one brother in infancy.

Mr. Hammel was employed at Electro Metals in Keokuk from 1946 to 1972, and from 1972 to 1975 by M & C Distributing in Keokuk which became Watson Distributing in Fort Madison, Iowa. He retired from Watson Distributing in 1995 after 20 years of service.

Elizabeth Windeguth
Aug. 19, 1913 - Dec. 19, 2001

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Elizabeth Clare Swigert Windeguth, 88, of Carbondale, Ill., and formerly of Hannibal, died Dec. 19, 2001, in Carbondale.

Graveside services will be at a later date at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Hillside, Ill. Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Windeguth was born Aug. 19, 1913, in Rensselaer to Joseph and Caroline Swigert.

She was married to Fred Windeguth in Hannibal. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, John Windeguth of Arlington Heights, Ill.; one daughter, Bess Shannon of Carterville, Ill.; and three granddaughters, Yvette Windeguth of Arlington Heights, Carrie Shannon Rigdon of St. Peters and Janet Windeguth of Woodstock, Ill.

The family wishes to include as survivors, two daughters-in-law, Eve Windeguth and Karen Windeguth; one son-in-law, Ray Shannon; and one grandson-in-law, Terry Rigdon.

She was preceded in death by one son, Kent Windeguth.

Mrs. Windeguth was a graduate of Rensselaer High School. She attended nursing school in Hannibal, but graduated from nursing school in Quincy, Ill.

Mary Jane McWilliams

FLORISSANT - Mary Jane Held McWilliams died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Valley of the Flowers Mortuary in Florissant. There will be a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Dismas Church. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the mortuary.

She was married to Joseph P. McWilliams Jr. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include six children, Patrick McWilliams, Kathleen Spence, Daniel McWilliams, Michael McWilliams, Mary Fletcher and Anne McWilliams; one brother, Donald Held; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Augustine
July 15, 1913 - Jan. 19, 2002

TROY - Dorothy A. Augustine, 88, of Troy, died at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The body was cremated. Burial will be at Stephens Cemetery in Silex. The McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Augustine was born July 15, 1913, in Silex to Albert and Minnie McDowell Stephens.

Survivors include two sisters, Norma Roeder of St. Louis and Alberta Perrigo of Kewanee, Ill.

The family wishes to include as survivors, nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Wier and Mary Kramer.

Mrs. Augustine had worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill., and retired from Silex Community Care as director of nursing. She graduated from Missouri Baptist School of Nursing in St. Louis and received her master's degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Ira Ed Smock
March 7, 1918 - Jan. 21, 2002

PARIS - Ira Ed Smock, 83, of rural Holliday, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Shelbina Cemetery. Agnew Funeral Home in Paris is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smock was born March 7, 1918, near Hannibal to Frank and Edith Smock.

Survivors include one sister, Eleanor Blackaby of Shelbina; and his ex-wife, housekeeper and companion, Jean Livers.

The family wishes to include as survivors, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Eddie Franklin Smock.

Mr. Smock was an avid trapper, hunter and outdoorsman. He farmed in Granville for most of his life. When he was young he attended Granville Christian Church.

James W. Brothers
Jan. 6, 1925 - Jan. 22, 2002

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - James W. Brothers, 77, of Kansas City, Mo., died Jan. 22, 2002, at St. Joseph Health Center.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at McGilley Memorial Chapel in Kansas City.

Mr. Brothers was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Quincy, Ill., to William and Ellen Doyle Brothers.

Survivors include four children, Maureen, JoEllen and Jim F. Brothers and Peggy Brothers Dodge; two sisters, Sister Marie Vincent, S.S.N.D., and Sister Marie Kevin, S.S.N.D.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The family wishes to include as survivors, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1984; his second wife, Norma, in 2000; one son, Kevin; and two brothers, Paul and Vincent.

Mr. Brothers attended the University of Missouri after graduating from McCooey High School in Hannibal. He served in the U.S. Army and went on to a career in insurance, retiring from Marsh and McLennan Inc. He volunteered at St. Joseph Health Center and as an election judge for the city of Kansas City, Mo. He participated in Public Links Seniors Golf of Kansas.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Health Center Auxiliary or St. Thomas More Memorial Fund.

Mary Louise Laws
Aug. 21, 1923 - Jan. 22, 2002

PERRY - Mary Louise Laws, 78, of Perry and formerly of Quincy, Ill., died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Twain Haven Nursing Home in Perry.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. William Catholic Church in Perry. Father M. Christopher Smith will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery in rural Center. Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Laws was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Ralls County to John and Ruby Louise Leake O'Connor.

She was married to William Thomas Laws on Jan. 23, 1946, in Perry. He preceded her in death Sept. 21, 1995.

Survivors include six sons, David Laws, Robert Laws, Donald Laws and Jerry Laws, all of Quincy, Jack Laws of Berkeley, Calif., and William Laws of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Diann Aden of Golden, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed O'Connor, Fred O'Connor and Don O'Connor; and two sisters, Virginia Hulse and Anna Ruth O'Connor.

Mrs. Laws was a 1941 graduate of Perry High School and a graduate of Gem City Business College in Quincy. She moved to Quincy in 1941 and returned to Perry two years ago. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Quincy.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Cemetery.
