George Sellers
Oct. 2, 1924 ­ Jan. 13, 2001

VANDALIA ­ George I. Sellers, 76, of Vandalia, died at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Moscow Mills.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia. The Rev. Bob Hoehn and Dr. Roger Thomas Sr. will officiate. Burial will be at Vandalia Cemetery.

Mr. Sellers was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Louisiana to Lyman and Sarah F. Carpenter Sellers.

He was married to Alyce Mabry on Aug. 6, 1966, in Hannibal. She preceded him in death Nov. 15, 2000.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Sellers Cooper of St. Louis, Janet Sellers Dickman of Chantilly, Va., and Kimberly Sellers Ferguson of Moscow Mills; one sister, Rosalie Murr of Louisiana; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Sellers and Everett Sellers, who died as infants; and two sisters, Irene Wilhelm and Pearl Sisson.

Mr. Sellers was a field engineer with Hercules Inc. in Louisiana for 20 years before his 1982 retirement. He had lived in Vandalia since 1990.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sellers was a member of First Christian Church in Vandalia. He had been a Mason for more than 50 years and was a member of Perseverance Lodge No. 92, AF & AM in Louisiana. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Vandalia Country Club.

Mr. Sellers was a 1943 graduate of Louisiana High School.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in Vandalia.

Pallbearers will be Bill Wooten, Wayne Lynn, Phil Robertson, Richard Rentfro, Jim Elzea and Russell Reading.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Brinkman, Louis Schulze, Don Hoover and Larry Wheeler.

Margo Conboy
March 19, 1924 ­ Jan. 13, 2001

MONROE CITY ­ Margo Conboy, 74, of Monroe City, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Stuart Manor House in Centralia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City. Father Bill Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City. A Rosary service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Conboy was born March 19, 1924, in Stoutsville to Eugene Daniel and Mary Gertrude Spalding Kelly.

She was married to James Thomas Conboy June 1, 1946, in Monroe City. He preceded her in death Dec. 30, 1994.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Conboy of Paris, James Conboy of Quincy, Ill., and Joseph Conboy of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Kathleen Yakes of Columbia and Karol Dinwiddie of Centralia; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Daniella Kendrick of Quincy, Ill.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Jelinske; one brother, Father Eugene Kelly of St. Louis; and one grandson, Corey Yates.

Mrs. Conboy attended Holy Rosary schools in Monroe City, graduating with the class of 1941. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Church and the Altar Society.

She worked many years for her father at their gas station and then as a clerk in the banking business in St. Louis.

Memorials may be made to Holy Rosary School.

Pallbearers will be Craig Yates, Jared Yates, Josh Conboy, Jess Conboy, Mike Conboy, Paul Conboy and Tyler Dinwiddie.

Alicia Grant King

SHELBINA ­ Alicia Grant King, 91, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Jan. 9, 2000, in Phoenix.

Graveside services for Mrs. King will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Shelbina.

Mrs. King was born April 7, 1908, in Shelbina to George C. and Virginia Swearengen Grant.

She was married to James F. King. He preceded her in death in 1953.

Mrs. King moved to Arizona to join Valley National Bank in 1956. She was an assistant vice president and officer in the bank's customer care department and the personnel department. Mrs. King had a journalism degree from the University of Missouri.

Mrs. King was a member of the board of directors of the Samuel Gompers Memorial Rehabilitation Center in Phoenix, a board member of the Arizona Mental Health Association, a member of the Phoenix Personnel Management Association, the National Association of Bank Women and the American Society for Personnel Administration. She spent a number of years as a career advisor for the Phoenix high schools.

After Mrs. King retired from banking, she became an avid golfer, traveled throughout the world and was active in her church.

Ruby E. Sweet

HANNIBAL ­ Ruby E. Sweet, 95, of Hannibal, died at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19, 2000, at Levering Regional Heath Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Anna Kathleen Jett

ELSBERRY ­ Anna Kathleen Jett, 74, of Moscow Mills, died Jan. 17, 2000, at Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield. The Rev. Mike Ryan will officiate. Burial will be at the Winfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Jett was born May 27, 1925, in Moscow Mills to Clarence L. and Laura Virginia Argent Sitton.

She was married to Charles Troy Jett on Nov. 6, 1948, in Troy. He preceded her in death June 6, 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Jett of San Diego, Calif., and Billy Jett of St. Charles; four daughters, Janet Owens of Waukegan, Ill., Virginia Jett of Troy, Karen Flieger of Leadwood and Brenda Richter of Moscow Mills; 10 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Eugene Sitton; and one sister, Norma Kay Sitton.

Mrs. Jett was a 1943 graduate of Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis. She was a homemaker.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 3838 East Highway 47, Winfield, Mo. 63389.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Owens, Mitch Owens, John Maxwell, Garry Richter, Wayne Wampler and Donald Wells.

Sandra Jean Wheeler
Jan. 9, 1952 - Jan. 18, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ Sandra Jean Wheeler, 49, of Hannibal, died at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Gerald Begley will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wheeler was born Jan. 9, 1952, in Kansas City, Mo., to Robert E. Elsie Sr. and Dorothy Moss Elsie.

She was married to Randy K. Wheeler Sr. on Sept. 25, 1998, in Hannibal. He survives.

Other survivors include her grandmother, Irene Smith of Hannibal; her father of the state of Louisiana; her mother, Dorothy Shepard of Hannibal; two daughters, Charlene Jones and Veronica Dryden, both of Hannibal; one son, Chuck Jones Jr. of Hannibal; three stepsons, Kurt Newsome of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Randy Wheeler Jr. and David Wheeler, both of Palmyra; four brothers, Robert Elsie Jr. of the state of Louisiana, David Elsie of Quincy, Ill., Clinton Shepard of Hannibal and Donnie Shepard of Payson, Ill.; one sister, Sharon Davis of Big Neck, Ill.; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Susan Elsie; and her stepfather, Donald Shepard.

Mrs. Wheeler was self-employed as a painter and interior decorator. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and attended Holy Family Church.

The family also wishes to include a special thank you to Jackie Mook and Kathy Newsome.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Program.

Pallbearers will be Jim O'Donnell, Roger Mastin, Jerry Mastin, Joe Hays, Steve Hays and Ronnie Key.

Dr. Eugene Brezany Sr.

NORMANDY ­ Dr. Eugene Edmund (Breezy) Brezany Sr., 94, of St. Louis, a dentist who formerly operated the Quincy Drive-In Theater at West Quincy, died Jan. 18, 2000, in St. Louis.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Ann's Church in Normandy.

Visitation began Thursday at O'Sullivan Muckle Mortuary in St. Louis and will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services today at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 225 S. Meramec, Clayton, Mo. 63105.

Ernest Dennison Jr.
May 12, 1912 ­ Jan. 20, 2001

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. ­ Ernest Howard (Denny) Dennison Jr., 88, of Ellisville, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at All Saints Acute Care Center in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Mr. Dennison will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church near Arenzville, with burial at St. Peter's Cemetery.

The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Dennison was born May 12, 1912, in Downing, to Ernest H. and Lutie Randle Dennison Sr.

He was married to Lena Hammer on Oct. 17, 1931, in LaSalle, Ill. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Anita Dennison Johnson of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Randle Dennis of Chesterfield and Larry Dennison of Creve Coeur; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dennison graduated from Dowling High School and attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. He joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1937, one of 36 chosen from a group of 7,500 applicants. He began duty on July 1, 1937, in Kirkwood, and served in troops in Unionville, Hannibal, Macon and St. Louis. He attained the rank of lieutenant. He retired to Sarasota, Fla., in 1972, after 35 years of service to the patrol. He returned to St. Louis in 1998.

Mr. Dennison was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manchester, Sons of the American Revolution and the Masonic Lodge of Hannibal. He organized the first adult men's Sunday school class (King's Men) at St. John Lutheran Church in Hannibal.

Mr. Dennison competed through the United States and Canada in Senior Olympic and athletic competitions from 1988-1999, beginning at the age of 76. During that time he won 170 gold medals, 48 silver and 16 bronze. He competed in shot put, discus, javelin and 25-pound weight throw. He set a new U.S. Senior Olympic record in the shot put in St. Louis during the June 1989 national competition. In July 1992, he set a Canadian record in the 25-pound weight throw in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manchester. The Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.

Larry G. Painter Jr.
Nov. 12, 1978 - Jan. 22, 2001

MONROE CITY ­ Larry George Painter Jr., 22, of Monroe City, died at 1:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, as the result of injuries he suffered in an auto accident in Marion County.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. Pastor Kenneth Schamber will officiate. Burial will be at the Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Marion County.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.

Mr. Painter was born Nov. 12, 1978, in Hannibal to Larry George and Mary Beth Redman Painter.

Survivors include his father of Monroe City; his stepmother, Jodi Reynolds of Monroe City; his mother of Monroe City; two brothers, Kevin Painter of Monroe City and Steven Painter of Aurora, Ill.; one stepbrother, Luke Reynolds of St. Louis; one sister, Joan Place of Charleston, W.Va.; three stepsisters, Julie Cook of Columbia, Crystal Polutio of Monroe City and Elizabeth Payton of Anchorage, Alaska; his maternal grandmother, Lucille Redman of Monroe City; his paternal grandmother, Alta Painter of Monroe City.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, George Painter and R.E. Redman.

Mr. Painter attended Monroe City High School with the class of 1997 and was currently attending Vatterott Technical College in Quincy, Ill. He was a member of the Monroe City Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Brian Wisdom, Jimmy Wisdom, Chad Osbourne, Adrian Painter, Bruce Ryan, Johnny Havermale, Josh Edwards and Shawn Keller.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.

Milburn Bender

SHELBINA ­ Milburn Bender, 80, of Clarence, died at 3:30 a.m. Jan. 21, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Funeral Services for Mr. Bender will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Shelbina. The Rev. Weldon Frazee will officiate. Burial be at Shelbina Cemetery.

Mr. Bender was born in Macon County on April 2, 1919, to Lonnie Adolphus and Agnes Loraine Nelson Bender.

He was married to Betty Sue Phillips June 16, 1940, in Clarence. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Melba Sue Howard of Phoenix, Ariz., Rena Bailey of Huntsville and Brenda Ross of Cairo; one son, Phillip Bender of Clifton Hill; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bender was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Bender.

Mr. Bender was a member of Maud Christian Church and enjoyed playing pitch at the Clarence Senior Citizens Center.

Visitation for Mr. Bender will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina.

Memorials may be made to the Dialysis Clinic at 3300 Lemone Blvd., Columbia, Mo. 65201.

Pallbearers will be Randy Howard, Theron Howard, Shane Bailey, Troy Christine, Chad Bailey, Earl Christine and Jeff Bender.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Totten, Dwaine Totten, Steve Totten, John Quinley, Lyle VanHouten, LeRoy Proper and LaRue Baker.
