HANNIBAL - Alice Norfolk, 72, of Payson, Ill., died at 2:47 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Minnie Slaughter
Jan. 18, 1920 - Jan. 26, 2002

ELSBERRY - Minnie Novelle Slaughter, 82, of Elsberry, died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Barnes-St. Peters Hospital in St. Peters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Burial will be at Elsberry City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Slaughter was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Obion, Tenn., to Walter Lee and Adeline Wyatt Matheny.

She was married to Ernest Henry Slaughter on Sept. 19, 1936, in Tiptonville, Tenn. He preceded her in death May 18, 1987.

Survivors include four sons, Ernest Slaughter Jr. of Whiteside, Cecil Slaughter of Milan, Tenn., and Don Slaughter and Calvin Slaughter, both of Elsberry; two daughters, Betty Momphard and Jean Hardy, both of Elsberry; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Mary Corene Johnson of Humboldt, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill Matheny, Raymond Matheny, Alonzo Matheny, Bud Matheny and John L. Matheny; three sons, Preston Henry Slaughter, James F. Slaughter and Billy Wayne Slaughter; and one grandson, Chad Slaughter.

Mrs. Slaughter formerly worked at Forrest Keeling Nursery. She was a member of Elsberry Assembly of God.

Memorials may be made to Great Rivers Nursing Service in St. Peters

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Helen S. Ortlepp
Oct. 31, 1918 - Jan. 27, 2002

WINFIELD - Helen Sophie Ortlepp, 83, of Old Monroe, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Troy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Troy.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at St. Paul United Church of Christ near Old Monroe. The Rev. Jeanne Lischer will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul UCC Cemetery near Old Monroe.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield.

Mrs. Ortlepp was born Oct. 31, 1918, in Old Monroe to Henry and Alma Catherine Goos Ortlepp.

Survivors include several cousins, including Mildred Blackmore and her husband, Robert, of Florida, Erleene Ostmann and her husband, Robert, of St. Charles and Elmer Schroer and his wife, Sharon, of Florida.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Frieda Sophie Ortlepp; and one brother, Armin Herman Ortlepp.

Mrs. Ortlepp was employed for a short time at International Shoe Factory. She was a lifelong resident of Old Monroe and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ, in care of the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Daryl Rhodes, Eric Token, Walter Dickmeyer Jr., Marvin Schacher, Don Bothe and Robert Ostmann.

Ethel V. Ellison
July 25, 1911 - Jan. 29, 2003

LA GRANGE - Ethel V. Ellison, 91, of La Grange, died at 2:33 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in La Grange. Father David Cox will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in La Grange.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.

The Davis Funeral Home in La Grange is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ellison was born July 25, 1911, in Maude to Ellison Barney and Fanney Bell Rice Lewellen.

She was married to Robert L. Ellison on May 8, 1932, in St. Patrick. He survives.

Other survivors include one brother, Roscoe Lewellen of Hannibal; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers; and one sister.

Memorials may be made to Notre Dame St. Mary's Altar Society.

William H. Paschal

HANNIBAL - William Howard Paschal, 85, of Hannibal, died at 7:06 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Services are pending at the Smith Funeral Home in Hannibal.

C.D. Spencer
Sept. 23, 1915-Jan. 18, 2003

MONROE CITY - Clarence Darrell Spencer, 87, of Columbia, formerly of the Indian Creek Community near Monroe City, passed away at 1:18 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at the University of Missouri Medical Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Spencer will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City. The Rev. Lynn Crader will officiate. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Hunnewell.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 20, at the funeral home, and until time of service on Tuesday.

Mr. Spencer was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Hunnewell, the son of Earl and Blanche Couch Spencer. He was married to Frances Sherman Oct. 25, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, the Rev. Clay Spencer, Columbia, and David Spencer, Foxboro, Mass.; six grandchildren, Michael and Thomas Spencer, Foxboro, Mass., and Katie, Sam, Mollie and Matthew Spencer, Columbia; one sister, Mary Bright, Paris, Mo.; and two brothers, Vene Spencer, Paris, Mo., and Jim Spencer, Shelbina.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Spencer; and two sisters, Daisy Fern (Brothers) Cox and Fay Whitney.

He attended the Hunnewell schools. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years including World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served aboard the USS California, USS Witchita, USS Shamrock Bay, USS Kearsarge, USS Hampton, USS Randall, USS Sierra and USS Sandoval. Following his retirement he moved to the Indian Creek Community where he farmed and raised livestock for some 32 years. Three years ago he moved to Columbia to make his home. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the IOOF Cemetery, Hunnewell.

Casketbearers will be Doug and Justin Baker, Jordon and George Bright, Marty Spencer, John and Jim Yates and Chris Quinn.

Walter C. Roland
April 8, 1908-Jan. 19, 2003

HANNIBAL ­ Walter Clarence Roland, 94, of Hannibal, formerly of the Spalding community, died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Beth Haven Nursing Home.

Funeral services for Mr. Roland will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan, 23, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Hannibal. The Rev. Bennett Poage will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Roland was born April 8, 1908, in Spalding to Albert Martin and Della C. Spotts Roland. He was married to Vivian Raye Harris on Jan. 27, 1946, at the home of the Rev. John Golden in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivers include one nephew, the Rev. Bennett Poage, Richmond, Ky.; one niece, Randi Miller of Hannibal; three great-nieces, Nannett Poage-Prater, Hannibal, Wynn Yancey, Bradenton, Fla., and Amanda Miller of Hannibal; and one great-great nephew, Clay Yancey, Bradenton, Fla. Also surviving is a friend and the Rolands' caretaker, Ann Subke O'Cheltree, Hannibal.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Poage; and his brother-in-law, Eugene Poage.

Mr. Roland retired after 26 years as an agent for Ralls County Farm Bureau Insurance in Spalding. Previously he was a partner in The Spalding General Store with his father. He served in the South Pacific with the Navy Sea-Bee's during World War II. He was a member of the Ralls County Farm Bureau and the Spalding Christian Church.

The Rolands assisted in the production of the book, "The History of Ralls County," by Goldena Roland Howard. He was a graduate of Rensselaer Academy. He was a member of the Ralls County Historial Society. Mr. Roland will be remembered by his family and friends as a very good person.

Memorials may be made to the Ralls County Historical Society.

Clarence Monroe Yochum
Jan. 29, 1927- Jan. 15, 2003

HANNIBAL - Clarence Monroe Yochum, 75, of Hannibal, died at 12:08 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, at Big Creek Presbyterian Church in Rensselaer. The Rev. Douglas Darnold will officiate. Burial will be at Big Creek Church Cemetery in Rensselaer.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the church.

Smith Funeral Home and Chapel in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yochum was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Oakwood to Alexander and Ina Mae Alexander Yochum.

He was married to Virginia Glascock on Nov. 23, 1950, in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, John Daniel Yochum of Hannibal and Paul Yochum and his wife, Dawn, of Monroe City; two daughters, Ann Foreman and her husband, Gary, of Withers Mill and Mary Jo Finchum and her husband, Clarence, of Muscatine, Iowa; and eight grandchildren, Drew and Michael Yochum; Emily, Samuel, Alice and Aaron Foreman; and Tyler and Grady Finchum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one half-brother, John D. Yochum; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Glascock McKee and Nancy Senior Glascock.

Mr. Yochum was a lifelong resident of Hannibal and Rensselaer, and a member of Big Creek Presbyterian Church for 52 years. He graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange College, where he was president of the student council. He also attended the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served three years in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Alaska and Mississippi. He was a farmer and also worked at Central Stone and American Cyanamid. Trap shooting and welding were his favorite hobbies.

Jessie Hutchinson

SHELBINA - Jessie Hutchinson, son of Amy Shuck of Hunnewell and Sean Hutchinson of Maywood, was stillborn Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Moberly Regional Medical Center.

Private funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Shelbina. Pastor Patrick Minter and the Rev. Kenneth Shawnburge will officiate. Burial will be at Hunnewell City Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Shelby and Marie Harper of Hunnewell, Mark and Lori Shuck of Philadelphia, Roy Dale Hutchinson of Denver, Colo., and Joseph and Marla Yates of Maywood; great-grandparents, John and Nelly Yates of Monroe City, Burt Hooper and Maurice and Rose Shuck, all of Hunnewell, and Sylvia Harper of St. Louis; stepgreat-grandparents, Donald and Shirley Jackson of Hannibal; great-great-grandmother, Frances Hawkinson of Clarence; and aunts and uncles, Kimberly and Taylor Shuck of Philadelphia, Megan Yates and Roger Hutchinson of Memphis, Tenn., Alan Hutchinson of Denver, Michael Hooper of Maryville, and Dereck Shuck and Tyler Hooper, both of Hunnewell.

Patricia A. Lockhart
June 12, 1937-Jan. 3, 2003

HANNIBAL - Patricia A. Lockhart, 65, of Hannibal, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at her home.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Father Mike Quinn will officiate.

No visitation is planned.

Mrs. Lockhart was born June 12, 1937, in Hannibal to Dorothy Costello.

Survivors include one uncle, John B. Costello of Quincy, Ill.; one granddaughter, Michelle Lockhart; two great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Billy Jack Lockhart.

Mrs. Lockhart worked in restaurants and nursing homes in the Cincinnati area. She was a member of the Holy Family Church in Hannibal.

Glenn H. Duesdieker
Nov. 7, 1918-Jan. 3, 2003

HANNIBAL - Glenn H. Duesdieker, 84, of Hannibal, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Robert Duesdieker will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55 will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Duesdieker was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Quincy, Ill., to Elmer Duesdieker Sr. and Lena Woerman Duesdieker.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean Bylling and husband, Stan, of Denham Springs, La.; one son, the Rev. Robert W. Duesdieker of Boonville; one sister, Dorothy E. Fengel of Quincy; a special friend, Margaret Rhoades of Hannibal; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Duesdieker Jr.

Mr. Duesdieker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked as a B&B mechanic for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. He retired as BMWE general chairman.

He was a Presbyterian by faith and a member of Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55. He was a 32rd Degree Mason.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Shriners Children's Hospital and/or the charity of the donor's choice.

Pallbearers will be Ray Ball, Leo Powell, Russell Maple, Birney Newlon, John Hayden and Jim Barnes.
