HANNIBAL - Emma Jean Penick, 92, of Hannibal, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Private services will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hannibal. Pastor Richard Ingmire will officiate. Burial will be at Payson Cemetery in Payson, Ill.

No visitation is planned. James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Penick was born May 5, 1910, in Concordia to Francis F. and Mary E. Huffman Bannan.

She was married to Frank A. Penick on Aug. 1, 1965, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1984.

Survivors include two daughters, DeLores Jensen of Hannibal and Virginia Holmes and husband, Charles, of Conyers, Ga.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by nine sisters; and one brother.

Mrs. Penick was a retired nurse who had worked at Carrollton Hospital. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church.

Shirley Hooper
May 17, 1936-Jan. 4, 2003

SHELBINA - Shirley Hooper, 66, of Hunnewell, died at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Shelbina. Burial will be at Morris Chapel Cemetery west of Shelbyville.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hooper was born May 17, 1936, in Center to Thomas Dale Hawkinson Sr. and Frances Helen Flowers Hawkinson.

She was married to Bert Hooper on Dec. 13, 1954, in Shelbyville. He survives

Also surviving are seven children, Angie Ferguson of Philadelphia, Harold Hooper and Marie Harper, both of Hunnewell, Tina Kiser of Shelbyville, Kevin Hooper of Clarence, Travis Hooper of Allen, Texas, and Laurie Hooper of Monroe City; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, James Hawkinson; one adopted brother, Travis Hawkinson; and three adopted sisters, Linda Murch, Tonia Harrington and Julia Cain.

Arthur E. (Bud) Poppe
Nov. 10, 1917-Jan. 3, 2003

PALMYRA - Arthur E. (Bud) Poppe, 85, of Palmyra, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra. The Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.

Mr. Poppe was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Marion County to Henry John Poppe Sr. and Fredericka Seitz Poppe.

He was married to Edna Heitholt on Oct. 6, 1957, at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Freda Ruth Janvrin of Franktown, Colo., and Janice Bowling of Ocoee, Fla.; five grandchildren, Gail Janvrin, Curtis Janvrin, Victor Janvrin, Brandy Bowling and Lance Bowling; one great-grandson; his nieces and nephews, Larry Heitholt, Gerald Heitholt, Kenny Heitholt, Linda Peer, Ann Barnett, Betty Shanks, Esther Kraft, Helen Dennison, Vivian Drebes, Jane Schaefer, Dorothy Page, Robert Peiter, Harold Poppe, Cathy Schade and Shirley Bramblett; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Poppe, Henry Poppe and John Poppe; and four sisters, Anna Minor, Lillian Peiter, and two who died as infants, Marie Poppe and Louise Poppe.

Mr. Poppe was service manager at Lovegreen Motors for 36 years. He retired in 1980. He attended school in West Ely. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra. He enjoyed camping, hunting, especially coon hunting, and fishing. He loved animals.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers will be Larry Heitholt, Steve Peer, Steve Barnett, Michael Schaefer, Bob Peiter and Max Schaefer.

Ina Marie Winters
June 22, 1931 - Jan. 27, 2003

HANNIBAL - Ina Marie Winters, 71, of Hannibal, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Thunderbird Samaritan Hospital in Glendale, Ariz.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate. Burial will be at Clarendon Hill Cemetery in Darien, Ill.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Winters was born June 22, 1931, in St. Louis to Orville Otis Sr. and Hazel Alma Mitchell Campbell.

She was married to Ray Winters. He preceded her in death Sept. 8, 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Richard M. Vaughn of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Tod R. Winters of Rochester, Mich.; one daughter, Linda J. Anderson of Glendale; two brothers, Tom Campbell of Hannibal and Orville Otis Campbell Jr. of Nashville, Ark.; nine grandchildren, Sherri, Brent, Julie, Debbie, Jaime, T.R., Kevin, Kelly and Jake; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis James Vaughn; and one brother, Art Campbell.

Mrs. Winters worked as cashier and cook at the Becky Thatcher Restaurant in Hannibal. She was a Christian by faith.

Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation.

Kenneth Werr
Nov. 15, 1931 - Jan. 30, 2003

SHELBINA - Kenneth Werr, 71, of Shelbyville, died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Shelbyville. The Rev. Kenneth Schamber will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina.

Mr. Werr was born Nov. 15, 1931, in Shelbyville to Eversz Edgar and Dorothy Heinze Werr.

He was married to Betty Ralls on May 16, 1952, in Shelbyville. She survives.

Other survivors include four children, David Werr, Rhonda Berry and Larry Werr, all of Shelbyville, and Linda Pedersen of Blue Springs; 10 grandchildren, Andy Werr, Stacey Werr, Dustin Berry, Brandi Berry, Ashley Werr, Lee Werr, Emma Werr, Jana Werr, Kirby Pedersen and Jami Pedersen; one brother, John Werr of Shelbyville; and one sister, Marilyn Prange of Shelbyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepmother, Mary Werr.

Herbert E. Glascock

HANNIBAL - Herbert E. Glascock, 83, of Hannibal, died at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Willow Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Burial, with military rites by the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post, will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at the funeral home and will include Masonic services.

Ruth M. Francis
April 13, 1912- Jan. 29, 2003

BOWLING GREEN - Ruth M. Francis, 90, of Bowling Green, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Moore-Pike Nursing Home in Bowling Green.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Kirks Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green. The Rev. David Land will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Zion Cemetery in rural Bowling Green.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Francis was born April 13, 1912, near Bowling Green to James and Flora Hardy Moore.

She was married to Alvin Francis. He preceded her in death June 24, 1978.

Survivors include one son, Harold Francis of Bowling Green; one daughter, Mary Sutterfield of Huntington, Ark.; eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nellie Brown of Bowling Green.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Flora Mae Francis and Rosa Lee Francis; and one sister, Bessie Ashcraft.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Pallbearers will be Lyle Tullock, Rick Francis, Lee Tullock, Tommy Langley, Jeff Langley and Lonnie Tullock.

Carol Jean Franklin
Feb. 2, 1934 - Jan. 21, 2003

PERRY - Carol Jean Franklin, 68, of Perry, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Twain Haven Nursing Home in Perry.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Perry Christian Church. The Rev. Dale Jorgenson will officiate. Burial will be at Lick Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry.

Mrs. Franklin was born Feb. 2, 1934, in Perry to Rolla and Zelda Marie Six Nett.

She was married to Richard Eugene (Shorty) Franklin on July 2, 1954, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death Oct. 5, 2000.

Survivors include one son, Graylon Franklin of Vandalia; two daughters, Sheila Street of Geneva, Neb., and Gina Gaskell of Otterville; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Nett and Don Nett; and one sister, Marjorie Jackson.

Mrs. Franklin was a lifetime area resident and member of the Perry Christian Church and the church's CWF. She had been employed by Twain Haven Nursing Home for 20 years. She loved to play cards and bingo and to go bowling.

Memorials may be made to the Perry Christian Church or Lick Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dean Harrison, Gayle Stuart, David Levings, John Carter, Elmer Coleman and Elmo Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Martha Harrison, Lois Hodges, Lois Stuart, Jane Zimmerman, Becky McCollum, Shirley Levings, Joyce Winfree, Joyce Coleman and Catherine Carter.

Catherine McConnell
March 16, 1925 - Jan. 19, 2003

CLARENCE - Catherine (Katy) Virginia Poole McConnell, 77, of Clarence, died at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, with a service to follow immediately at the Clarence Christian Church. Brother David Johnson will officiate.

Mrs. McConnell was born March 16, 1925, in rural Shelby County near Emden to Adelbert Lee and Susie Gertrude Calvert Wood.

She was married to Robert Marvin Poole on Dec. 25, 1953. He preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1961. She was married to Leon (Pete) McConnell on Aug. 16, 1969. He preceded her in death March 3, 1999.

Survivors include one daughter, Laura Lee Poole of Cape Girardeau; one son, Robert Gregory Poole of Pittsburg, Kan.; one sister, Geraldine Lackey of Shelbina; and one brother, Leonard Wood of Monroe City.

Memorials may be made to the Clarence Christian Church or Hospice 2000, 902 E. LaHarpe, Suite 100, Kirksville, Mo. 63501.

Holly Dye Troutner

PALMYRA - Holly Dye Troutner, 41, of Emden and formerly of Palmyra, died at 2:18 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in the emergency room at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services are pending at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.

Grace Marie Miles
Aug. 12, 1906 - Jan. 22, 2003

SHELBINA - Grace Marie Miles, 96, of Leonard, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Leonard Christian Church. Brother Mark Engler will officiate. Burial will be at the Church of the Brethren Mennonite Cemetery.

The Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Miles was born Aug. 12, 1906, in Hardin to Jesse A. and Maggie E. Mason Early.

She was married to Leroy H. Miles on May 16, 1936. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two children, Hazel Lee Lauver of Kansas City, Kan., and Russell E. Miles of Leonard; two sisters, Vera Williams and Ruth Early; two brothers, Loyd Early and Harold Early; one son-in-law, Charles Lauver; one daughter-in-law, Norma Miles; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Beulah Wear; and one brother-in-law, Joe Fifer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Lena Temple Early; one brother; one sister; and one granddaughter.

Donald Richard O'Brien
Aug. 9, 1928 - Jan. 23, 2003

PERRY - Donald Richard O'Brien, 74, of Farber and formerly of Perry and Center, died at 1:44 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at his home.

There will be no services or visitation. The Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O'Brien was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Pike County, Ill., to William Lawrence and Myrtle Anderson O'Brien.

He was married to Betty Marie Davidson on Nov. 22, 1947, in Hannibal. She preceded him in death Dec. 16, 1992.

Survivors include one son, Richard (Dickie) O'Brien of Hannibal; three daughters, Dee O'Brien of New London, Brenda O'Brien of Farber and Debbie O'Brien of Perry; four sisters, Angie Poage of Center, Mae Sheffield of Perry, Betty O'Brien of Columbia and Helen Dixon; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy O'Brien and Johnny O'Brien; three brothers, Russell O'Brien, Chester O'Brien and Lawrence O'Brien; and two sisters, Josephine Leonard and Marie Arnold.
