VIRGIL W. RUSSELL SR.

Virgil Warren Russell Sr., 78, Independence, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Russell was born July 2, 1920, in Benton, Ark., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a produce manager for the A&P Tea Co. for 37 years, until 1979, and then was a carpet cleaner for Interstate Carpet for eight years, retiring in 1988. He was a graduate of Andrew Drumm Farm, was a former member of Union Local 782, and was assistant Cub master of Pack 223 in the 1950s. He was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch, the Laurel Club, and was a 25 year charter-member of the Moshome Trailer Club.

His survivors include his wife, LaVone Russell of the home; two sons, Rob H. Russell, Lawrence, Kan., and Virgil W. Russell Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the South Crysler Restoration Branch, 16101 Salisbury Road, Independence, Mo. 64050, Volunteers in Action, P.O. Box 413035, Kansas City, Mo. 64141, or Hospice Preferred Choice, 115 S. Main St., Liberty, Mo. 64068.

VERA L. SELF

Vera Leona Self, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Self was born Jan. 15, 1912, in Naper, Neb., and moved to this area in 1967. She had been a member of the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital Auxiliary, and was a member of the Heritage House RLDS congregation. Her husband, Fremming Self, died in 1984.

Her survivors include a daughter, Dorene McKiernan, and two sisters, Belva Baldwin and Dora Hartford, all of Independence; and two grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Regional Health Center Gift of Hope Hospice Fund.

WAYNE C. TAYLOR

Wayne C. Taylor, 87, Independence, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Taylor was born April 27, 1911, in Enid, Okla., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a service engineer for Rockwell International for 25 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, and a 50 year member of McDonald Masonic Lodge 324. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His survivors include his wife, Katherine Taylor of the home; a brother, Lloyd H. Taylor, Raytown; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel; cremation. Masonic Lodge services will be held prior to the memorial services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.

WALTER J. TOTTY

Walter Jackson Totty, 86, Lathrop, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at the Cameron (Mo.) Community Hospital.

Mr. Totty was born Oct. 5, 1911, in Independence, and lived in Turney, Mo., for 40 years prior to moving to Lathrop six months ago. He was a building supervisor for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 37 years, and a farmer in Turney. He was a cowboy on a ranch in Nebraska as a young man. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Turney.

His survivors include his wife, Frances Totty of the home; a son, Wayne J. Totty, Turney; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Turney cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron.

ROSCOE L. TRUITT

Roscoe Lee Truitt, 68, Independence, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Truitt was born May 4, 1930, in Louisville, Ky., and had lived in Independence for 18 years. He was a brick mason for Jenkin`s Masonary in Louisville for 20 years. He was an Army veteran and a member of Eagles Lodge 385.

His survivors include his companion and caregiver, Ellen Warren of the home; four sons, Roscoe K. Truitt, Dale Truitt and Roger Truitt, all of Louisville, and Paul Truitt, Independence; a daughter, Karen Burke, Louisville; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

MABEL A. TREBEN

Mabel A. Treben, 87, formerly of Mendon, Mo., died Sept. 17, 1998, at the Regency Care Center, Independence.

Mrs. Treben was born July 16, 1911, in Mendon, Mo., and lived in Independence since 1988.

She graduated from Mendon High School. She and her husband Claude farmed in the Mendon area until he died in 1965. She worked as a clerk at the Mendon Feed and Grain Company for several years. She was a member of the Mendon Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Stockwood, Independence, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Gibson Funeral Home in Mendon at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be held in the Mendon cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Mendon Methodist Church.

ROY ALMA SMITH

Roy Alma Smith, 91, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Rosewood Health Center.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 3, 1907, in Lynn, Mo. and lived in Marshall and Sedalia, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1986. He had been an insulator with Standard Oil Co. He and his wife, Gladys, had volunteered for several years at historical sites in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Ill. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had been a pastor at the Buckner and Liberty Street RLDS congregations. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Givens Smith in July 1994 and by Dorothy Hoynak Smith, his second wife, in May 1998.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter Smith, Sedalia, Mo., and Willard Smith, Clarkston, Mich.; two sisters, Ida Bailey, Russelville, Ark., and Mildred Ellis, Carthage, Mo., and many nephews and nieces.

Services will be 4 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Contributions are suggested to the RLDS Temple Fund or the Groves Memorial Fund.

GARY L. HUNTSUCKER

Gary L. Huntsucker, 57, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Independence Health Center.

Mr. Huntsucker was a lifelong resident of Independence. He worked for the Ford Motor Co. for 38 years. He was a member of Loca 249 of United Auto Workers. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed antique cars.

His survivors include two daughters, Shelley L. Recknor and Sharla D. Huntsucker, both of Independence; his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Huntsucker, Buckner; one brother, Bill R. Huntsucker, Cameron, Mo.; one sister, Glenda S. Accardo, Lee`s Summit; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Buckner. Burial will be in Six Mile cemetery, Sibley. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, Mo., 64105.

ROY M. CONKLIN

Roy M. Conklin, 61, Buckner, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Truman Medical Center-West.

Mr. Conklin was born Jan. 20, 1937 in Columbia, Mo. He worked as an iron worker for several years.

Survivors include five sons, Steve Conklin, Overland Park, Kan., Scott Conklin, Kansas City, Stuart Conklin, Grandview, George Conklin and Kevin Conklin, both of Tempe, Ariz.; one daughter, Sara Brown, Kansas City; three brothers, Lloyd Conklin, Buckner, Joseph Conklin and Richard Conklin, both of Kansas City; three sisters, Katherine Todd, Buckner, Louise Tipton, Albertsville, Ala., and Martha Tinker, Buckner; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. A private burial will be in Old Union cemetery, Columbia, Mo. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the funeral services at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 5960 Dearborn, Mission, Kan. 66202.

SANDRA SUE KLEUVER BUTNER

Sandie Sue Kleuver Butner, 40, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at the University of St. Louis Hospital, St. Louis.

Mrs. Butner was born Feb. 17, 1958 in Kansas City and had lived in this area all of her life. She worked as an assembler with Calmar, Inc., Lee`s Summit for 14 years.

Survivors include her husband, Victor Butner, of the home; one son, Joe Butner, and one daughter, Jessie Butner, both of Blue Springs; her parents, John and Wilma Kleuver, Kansas City; one brother, John Kleuver, Seattle, Wash.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel.

MINNIE KATHLEEN BOROUGHS

Minnie Kathleen Boroughs, 86, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Boroughs was born Nov. 12, 1911, near Steele, Mo. She was a regular fan of the Kansas City Royals. She was a 50-year member of the Hornersville Chapter 523 Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church and belonged to the Busy Dee`s, a senior group at the church. She was preceded in death by a daughter and a granddaughter.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita Shultz, Independence; one granddaughter, Nancy Collier, Stillwell, Kan; two grandsons, Jim Shultz, Blue Springs, and Chris Fearl, Aiea, Hawaii; one sister, Ruth Toohey, Vallejo, Calif., four brothers, Guy Harper, Indianapolis, Ind., Frank Harper, Hot Springs, Ark., Bobby Harper, Nashville, Tenn., and Marvin Harper, Jr., Steele, Mo.; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial is in Carpenter cemetery, Chilhowee, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel.

SALVATORE "TUDIE" SOLITO

Salvatore "Tudie" Solito, 86, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Solito was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Kansas City. He worked as a wholesale produce dealer most of his life. He was an Army veteran and received the Bronze Star for his participation in three major WWII campaigns. He was commander and chaplain of American Legion Post #151. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean Solito.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Solito of the home; a daughter, Mary and her husband Steve Barber, Blue Springs; two grandchildren, Stephen and Amanda Barber; one brother, Philip Solito, Kansas City; one sister-in-law, Rose DeSimone, Kansas City; and many nephews and nieces.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 9020 E. 51st Terr., Kansas City. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. and a Campo Manfre Barbieri American Legion Post #151 service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sheil Colonial Funeral Home in Kansas City.

ELSIE W. HADLEY

Elsie W. Hadley, 97, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Hadley was born Feb. 19, 1901, in Macon County, Mo., and lived in Independence most of her life. She worked for Gernes Garment until she retired in 1969. She helped form and was a lifetime member of the International Industrial Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans

Ladies Auxilary and had served as past post commander. During WWII she worked at Lake City as an ammunitions inspector. She was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hadley in 1966, and a daughter, Dorothea Walters.

She is survived by a daughter, Berniece Holmes, Urbana, Mo.; two half-brothers, Dale Walker, Kansas City, and Gail Walker, Hannibal, Mo.; seven grandsons, Phillip E. Burris, Preston E. Burris, Patrick E. Burris, Paul E. Burris, Harold Phillip Walters, David Nathan Walters and Loren Lee Walters; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

BRUCE R. FISHER

Bruce Randall Fisher, 49, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Fisher was born in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1968 graduate of William Chrisman High School and had earned an associate's degree from Longview College. He had been a cartographer for Jackson County for 15 years and was currently employed by Stewart Title Co. He was the second kidney transplant recipient in the Kansas City area in 1973.

His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randall Bruce and Krysti Fisher; a granddaughter, Desiree Nicole Fisher, all of Springfield, Mo.; three brothers, Everett Fisher and Tyler Fisher, both of Independence, and Eric Grimmett, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Kelly Grinstead, North Kansas City, and Kim Bicknell, Atlanta, Ga.; his maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Everett and Hilda Myers, Independence; a stepson, Matthew Johnston and a stepdaughter, Alicia Johnston, both of Independence; two stepbrothers, Pete Whitteck, Kearney, Mo., and Mark Whitteck, Independence; and a stepsister, Judy McGrath, Independence.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Fairmount United Methodist Church, 2119 Holke Road, Independence. In his memory, the family suggests that you support the National Organ Donation Program by signing up to be an organ donor.
