THELMA R. HUFF

Thelma R. Huff, 93, Kansas City, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at The Manor of Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Huff was born Jan. 9, 1905, in Kansas City, Kan., and had lived in Independence for 56 years before moving back to Kansas City, Kan., a few years ago. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Independence. She worked for Curts Market before retiring in 1975. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence V. Huff in 1971.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Leland C. and Helen Huff, Kansas City, Kan.; and grandchildren, Philip L. Huff, Gayle M. Beth and Lee Ann Marks; and great-grandchildren, Kyle P. Huff, Leslee E. Marks, Abby A. Huff and Emily M. Beth.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

JENNIE V. DURBIN KABRICK

Jennie V. Durbin Kabrick, 79, Odessa, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Kabrick was born June 24, 1919, in Atherton, and she had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Kabrick.

Her survivors include a brother, Eugene Durbin, Odessa; two nieces; and a nephew.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

JUSTUS C. BEAN

Justus Conrad Bean, 83, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998.

Mr. Bean was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Sacramento, Calif. He operated the American Upholstry and Design Co. out of his home in Independence for many years and later worked and retired from TWA as a machinist. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Elizabeth Lewis.

His survivors include his wife, Lorean Bean of the home; two children, Justine Gamble, Bakersfield, Calif., and Gerald Bean, San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Jane Brown and Dawn P. Ware, both of Independence; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Cremation and burial on family grounds will be at a later date.

PAUL P. GRUBB

Paul P. Grubb, 81, Bates City, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Western Missouri Medical Center, Warrensburg, Mo.

Mr. Grubb was born May 10, 1917, in Odessa/Chapel Hill area. He had worked at the Lake City Ammunition Plant from 1940 to 1945 and from 1966 to 1979. He had also farmed south of Bates City since the early 1940s. He was a 1936 graduate of the Bates City High School. He was a member of the Odessa Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of the Elm Spring Baptist Church, Kingsville, Mo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Jewell Shafer Grubb on April 14, 1975, and his second wife, Edna L. Murry Browning Grubb, on March 14, 1996; and a son, Phillip Grubb in July 1971.

His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sharon Grubb, Los Angeles; and daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Wendall Estill, Bates City; two stepsons, Robert Browning, Odessa, and LeRoy Browning, Scappose, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Ida Anderson, Odessa, and Joyce Klema, Racine, Wis.; a brother, Henry V. Grubb, and a sister, Mary Ahrin, both of Odessa; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Elm Spring Baptist Church, Kingsville. Burial will be in Elm Spring cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa. The family suggests contributions to the Elm Spring cemetery Association.

EVA K. HAMPTON

Eva Katherine Hampton, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Hampton was born April 2, 1920, in St. Joseph, Mo. She graduated from Benton High School with honors. She and her husband, Elmer D. Hampton, had worked for the DITMCO in Kansas City. She had been in the Messiah Choir for more than 30 years. She had been an active member of the Spring Branch congregation of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and for the past several years a member of the Summit Grove congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer D. Hampton in 1997.

Her survivors include her six children, Gerald E. Hampton, Lamoni, Iowa, Donna Ree Crawford, Independence, Daniel Ray Hampton, Blue Springs, Ethel Mae Essex, Columbus, Ohio, Eva Lee Cartwright, Sibley, and Neva Marie Housknecht, Raytown; a brother, Ray Trotter, Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Helen Trotter, Pasadena, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Gift of Hope Hospice.

HELEN M. HART

Helen M. Hart, 91, Harrisonville, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at the Camden Health Care, Harrisonville, Mo.

Mrs. Hart was born Dec. 12, 1907, in Independence, and had lived in Independence for most of her life. She had been a bookkeeper for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 16 years. She had also worked as a bookkeeper for other businesses in Kansas City area. She was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, the Young Matrons, Kansas City Women's Club and Atheanaeum. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hart, on Sept. 29, 1997.

Her survivors include two daughters, Fran Lowery, Peculiar, Mo., and Sarah Clark, Prairie Village, Kan.; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from noon until service time at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence.

PEGGY "EDITH" McDOWELL

Peggy "Edith" McDowell, 82, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. McDowell was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Kansas City and had lived in this area most of her life. Her husband, Lester McDowell, died in 1994.

Her survivors include one son, Tony George, and one daughter, Kathy Hoskins, both of Independence; one brother, James Boswell, Blue Springs; one sister, Kay Calas, Torrance, Calif.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cremation, with no memorial services planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Gift of Hope Hospice of Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

JACK G. MERRIOTT

Jack G. Merriott, 72, Sugar Creek, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Merriott was born Dec. 23, 1926, in Versailles, Mo. He worked in the maintenance department for the city of Sugar Creek for 23 years, retiring in 1986. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army and received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan) and the Victory Medal.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Alma Merriott of the home; one brother-in-law, Jim Francis, and his wife, Dean, of Versailles; and several cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. Burial will be in Versailles cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home.

DEBORAH L. WAGGONER

Deborah Lynn Waggoner, 45, Marshall, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Fitzgibbon Hospital, Marshall.

Miss Waggoner was born Oct. 28, 1953, in Kansas City, and had been a resident of the Marshall Habilitation Center since 1960.

Her survivors include her parents, George Merle Waggoner and Aliena Bridges Waggoner of Independence; three brothers, Donald James Waggoner, Conyers, Ga., David Wayne Waggoner, Long Branch, N.J., and Kevin Neal Waggoner, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hopewell Baptist Church, Urbana, Mo. Burial will be in Hopewell cemetery, Urbana. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Hopewell cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home, Marshall.

ROSE E. McCAIN

Rose Elizabeth Keltner McCain, 76, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Tucson.

Mrs. McCain was born July 5, 1922, in Stilwell, Kan., and had lived in Independence before moving to Tucson three years ago. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers' College in 1940 and taught for several years in the Stilwell area. While in Independence, she was active in the Blue Ridge Baptist Church of Independence. In Stilwell, she was active in the South Haven Baptist Church of Belton, where she was involved in the Young at Heart senior's group, the Women on Mission Baptist women's group, and the Joy Sunday school class. She was president of the Kansas City Business and Professional Women's Organization in the 1970s. After retirement, she was involved with Project Finish, a Johnson County, Kan., literacy program. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Lathrop McCain, and a son, Charles Ernest McCain.

She is survived by her son, George Edward McCain of Tucson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the E.K. George and Sons Funeral Home, Belton. Graveside services and burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from noon until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to South Haven Baptist Church of Belton.

JOHN W. SCHROEDER

John W. Schroeder, 87, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998.

Mr. Schroeder was born Nov. 24, 1911, in Bucyrus, Kan. He retired from Lake City Ammunition Plant in 1976. He was a member of the Eagles 3717.

His survivors include his wife, Rose Schroeder of the home; daughters, Barbara Ann Hilton, Raytown, and Martha Deaver, Flemington, Mo.; two sons, John W. Schroeder, Anaheim, Calif., and Thomas L. Schroeder, Independence; a brother, Clarence Schroeder, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Patricia Lomax, Gilbert, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons, Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

MYRLE Z. EWALT

Myrle Zuber Ewalt, 102, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Independence.

Mrs. Ewalt was born Aug. 2, 1896, in Low Moor, Iowa, and had lived in Kennett, Mo., and the Warsaw/Clinton area for 20 years, before moving to Independence. She was baptized and confirmed by her father into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and later played a fold-up organ as the accompaniment for the hymns in the church. While living in Kennett, she was the local mid-wife, having delivered close to 100 babies. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Dale Zuber in 1951, her second husband, Henry McKinney in 1955 and her third husband, Allan Leroy Ewalt in 1989. She was also preceded in death by three children, Mary Evelyn Turner, Betty June Payne and Herbert Dale Zuber.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Wanda Zuber, Bennett, Colo.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Bonnie and John Sparks, Independence, Donna and Roland Hughes, Independence, and Kathryn Middleton, Smithville, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 43 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the chapel. Private family graveside services will be Monday at Mound Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Outreach International, Independence.

JAMES FRIZZELL & IMOGENE FRIZZELL

Mr. and Mrs. James Frizzell, Gladstone, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the North Kansas City Hospital.

Mr. Frizzell was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Deepwater, Mo. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 to 1950. He worked for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad from 1952 to 1963. He had also worked at the ADM Milling Co. He retired in 1988 as a security guard from the Commerce Bank of Kansas City. Since 1997, he had worked for the OATS Corp. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 659 of North Kansas City, the Scottish Rite of Kansas City, and the Ararat Shrine, Harem Unit. He had been a member of the Boy Scouts of American since 1939. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and was an Eagle Scout.

Mrs. Frizzell was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Windsor, Mo. She had worked as a sales clerk at the Gladstone Dollar General Store since 1995.

Mr. and Mrs. Frizzell had been members of the Linden Baptist Church for more than 35 years. They were original residents of Gladstone. They were involved in many charitable and community activities. For more than 25 years they opened their home and cared for physically and mentally handicapped children. During the operation of the Wee Care Group Home, Mrs. Frizzell was the home administrator.

They are survived by two sons, Richard Frizzell, Liberty, and Kurt Frizzell, Kansas City; two daughters, Kimberly Frizzell-Parente, Liberty, and Kelli Jo Frizzell, Gladstone; a foster child, Delina Trammell, Gladstone; and grandchildren, Brandon Trial-Frizzell, Justin Trial-Frizzell, Cody Frizzell, Peyton Frizzell, Ethan Frizzell, and Jackson Seth Parente.

Mr. Frizzell is also survived by a brother, Robert Frizzell, Indepeendence; and a sister, Doris Smith, Independence.

Mrs. Frizzell is also survived by a brother-in-law, Raymond Raines, Independence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Linden Baptist Church, 611 Northeast 69th Street, Gladstone. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Gladstone. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer's White Chapel, Gladstone. The family suggests contributions to the Linden Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel Funeral Home.

JESSE J. McGINNIS

Jesse James McGinnis, 16, Kansas City, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998.

Jesse was born May 17, 1982, in Sedalia, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area for 10 years. He was a sophomore at Van Horn High School. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America.

His survivors include his parents, Michael J. and Barbara J. McGinnis of the home; a brother, Jason McGinnis, Kansas City; a sister, Brenda Duncan, Kansas City; his maternal grandmother, May Evans, Sedalia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon until service time at the funeral home.
