ODIE "GENE" TATUM

Odie "Gene" Tatum, 75, Gallatin, Mo., died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at St. Luke`s Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mrs. Tatum was born March 17, 1923, in Higginsville, Mo. She was a graduate of the Higginsville High School. She was a homemaker. She attended nurses` school in Denver. She was a licensed practical nurse and had worked at several area hospitals including St. Mary`s Hospital in Kansas City, and Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Mo. She retired from nursing in 1995. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gallatin, where she had been active in the Sunday school department and choir. She was past president of the United Methodist Women`s organization; and a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Trenton, Mo. She was a former member of the Dockery Chapel Methodist Church, near Trenton, Mo.

Her survivors include her husband, Donald T. Tatum of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, James Edward and Alice Folsom, Chillicothe, Gerald and Diana Folsom, Independence, Danny and Jeanice Folsom, Kansas City, Kan., David and Alesia Tatum, Trenton, Mo.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Phyllis and Tony Rizzo, Independence, and Brenda Tatum, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; three sisters, Mary Jane Beretta, Lexington, Mo., Joanne Schumaker, Dover, Mo., and Wanda Faye Goedereis, Blue Springs; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Gallatin. Burial will be in Lake Viking cemetery, near Gallatin. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bram Funeral Home, Gallatin. The family suggests memorial contributions to the United Methodist Church, 111 S. Market, Gallatin, Mo. 64640; or American Diabetes Association, 801 Faraon St., St. Joseph, Mo. 64501; or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 30638, Columbia, Mo. 65205-3638.

CLAUDE E. "BUTCH" SPENCER

Claude E. "Butch" Spencer, 57, Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Spencer was born Aug. 19, 1941, in Omaha, Neb.

His survivors include his wife, Janice Spencer of the home; and two daughters, Pamela Hilbert and Melissa Spencer, and one son, Loyal Waitley, all of Lee`s Summit.

Cremation. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the home, 8932 E. Independence Ave. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kansas City Funeral Directors.

SUSANNE KAY HAMMER

Susanne Kay Hammer, 34, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at the Liberty Hospital.

Ms. Hammer was born Aug. 30, 1964, in Excelsior Springs and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was preceded in death by her father, Berger Popejoy, in 1994.

Her survivors include her mother, Zella Hammer, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, Jerry Hammer, California, and Jessie Hammer, Florida; two sisters, June McKnight, Independence, and Cheryl Pennel, Independence; and three nieces.

Graveside Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Crown Hill cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Prichard Chapel in Excelsior Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Royal Care Center.

JERRY MARKLEY

Jerry Markley, 77, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Markley was a lifelong Independence resident, and had lived at the Independence Health Care Center for two years. She was a homemaker and a member of the RLDS South Side Avenue Second Church.

Her survivors include five sons, Doyle D. Davidson III, Evansville, Wyo., John P. Phillips Jr., Norwalk, Iowa, Raymond L. Markley and Gary Wayne Markley, both of Independence, and Gerald C. Markley, Dothan, Ala.; one daughter, Jerry Lee Stark, Independence; one sister, Charlene M. Allen, North Kansas City; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be noon Monday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Diabetes Association of Jackson County.

LAVERNE MARTIN

Laverne Ashby Martin, Ed.D., Houston, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in Houston.

Mrs. Martin was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Warrick County, Ind., and moved to Kansas City at the age of six. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas City Teachers College in Kansas City

in 1942, a master's degree from Southwest Baptist Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, in 1946, and a doctorate degree in religious education from Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., in 1968. She began her career as Arkansas State Secretary of the Baptist Women's Missionary Union. In 1950-51, she was the Director of Religious Education at the Inskip Baptist Church, Knoxville, Tenn., and in April 1952, she became head of the Primary Department in the Church Training Union Department of the Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville.

It was during that time that she co-authored "The Primary Leadership Manual" and the "Primary Section" of The Baptist Training Union Magazine. In 1966, her first children's book, "The Bible is a Special Book, " was published. In the fall of 1969, she joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina as assistant professor of early childhood education.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harris Linly Martin.

She is survived by one sister, Barbara J. Scogin of Independence; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Nov. 19 in the Chapel of South Main Baptist Church, Houston. Private inurnment will be held Dec. 29 at Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City.

KERIN N. RATZLAFF

Kerin N. Ratzlaff, 61, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at the Cedar Valley Care Center in Raytown.

Mrs. Ratzlaff was born Dec. 5, 1937, in McCune, Kan., and lived in Independence most of her life. She was a housewife.

Her survivors include her husband, C. J. Ratzlaff of the home; two sons, Eddie J. Ratzlaff, Ava, Mo., and Mark R. Ratzlaff, Bates City, Mo.; two daughters, Brenda L. Meadows, Independence, and Jenise G. Pointer, Independence; two brothers, John M. Hiller and Galen E. Hiller, McCune, Kan.; two sisters, Wanda Houck, Dripping Springs, Okla., and Norita O'Toole, McCune, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimers Association, Heartland Chapter, P.O. Box 8076, Prairie Village, Kan., 66208.

EZRA F. "BUDDY" GULICK Jr.

Ezra F. "Buddy" Gulick Jr., 69, Independence, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Gulick was born May 25, 1929, in Flint, Mich., and had lived in Independence for 42 years. He worked for the General Motors Leeds Assembly Plant for 35 years, retiring as a millwright in 1984, and was a member of United Auto Workers 93. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Independence, Raytown Masonic Lodge, and an Army veteran. He was active in Cub Scouts, was a Boy Scout leader, and member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was a skilled carpenter, and an avid outdoorsman.

His survivors include his wife of 43 years, Helen Elaine Lee Gulick of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Pamela Gulick, Castle Rock, Colo.; one daughter, Gayle Gulick, Lake Lotawana; one brother, Jack L. Gulick, Raytown; one sister, Shirley Duncan, Lee's Summit; five grandchildren, Lance Cpl. Dustin Rabourn, USMC, Sara and James Gulick, and Carlee and Kelsey Harrison; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Graveside services and burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Pittsburg (Kan.) Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

WILLIAM C. HUTCHINGS

William Carroll Hutchings, 84, Grain Valley, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Hutchings was born Dec. 6, 1913, in Grain Valley. He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring in 1955, was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. He worked for the Grain Valley R-V Schools for several years before retiring from the Jackson County Engineering Department in 1976. He was a member of Grain Valley Masonic Lodge 644, past master; Blue Springs Chapter 48 of the Order of the Eastern Star, past patron; and American Legion Post 499 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2171.

His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Susie M. Hutchings of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Pam Hutchings, West Plains, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Ron Perry, Grain Valley; two brothers, Jim Hutchings, Grain Valley, and Richard Hutchings, Blue Springs; two sisters, Mary Skaggs, Blue Springs, and Doris Judd, Presque Isle, Wis.; two grandchildren, Monica and Travis Perry; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 6:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary's Hospice.

MALVERN L. MORRISON

Malvern L. Morrison, 73, Blue Springs, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Morrison was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Cameron, Mo., and lived in Kansas City for more than 20 years, moving to Blue Springs two years ago. He owned and operated Morrison Construction Co. for more than 30 years. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

His survivors include his wife, Muriel Morrison, and his mother-in-law, Luella Haynes, both of the home; one son, Stephen Norton, Euless, Texas; three daughters, Traci Morrison, Kansas City, Terri Lea Romack, Fort Worth, Texas, and Melinda Surbaugh, Coppell, Texas; one brother, Kenneth Morrison, Humansville, Mo.; two sisters, Norma Pitts, Flemington, Mo., and Mildred Floyd, Columbia, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Shannon Norton, Richard and Matthew Surbaugh, and Jessica Glauser.

Services will be at 7:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Humansville cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

GREGORY W. ANDERSON

Gregory Wayne Anderson, 42, Maryville, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Maryville.

Mr. Anderson was born Oct. 10, 1955, in Chicago. He was the dairy manager for Easter's Foods in Maryville. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Independence, a 1972 graduate of Central High School, St. Joseph, Mo., and attended Northwest Missouri State University. He was a carrier for The Examiner in his early years.

His survivors include his wife, Arlene Anderson, one son, Zane Schulte, and two daughters, Rachel Anderson and Jacklyn Anderson, all of the home; his father, Dr. Gerald W. Anderson, Independence; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were Monday at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Burial was in Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville. Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 4000 Lee's Summit Road. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

KEITH A. BOTTS

Keith A. Botts, 66, Independence, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Botts was born Nov. 27, 1931, in Tonganoxie, Kan., and lived in Lawrence, Kan., for several years, moving to Independence 20 years ago. He was apprentice coordinator for 12 years and active member of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 2 for 45 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the executive board from 1967 to 1970 and 1994 to 1996, and helped on various union activities, including golf and bowling tournaments. He was chairman and trustee of the Greater Kansas City Sheet Metal

Industries Safety, Research and Education Trust, and had been a board member of the National Safety Council, Kansas City Chapter. He worked on many Christmas in October projects and for Habitat for Humanity. His first wife, Irene M. Botts, died in 1979.

His survivors include his wife, Kaye Botts of the home; one son, Terry Botts, Kansas City; one daughter, Marsha Ulaby, Saudi Arabia; four stepdaughters, Kelly Thornbury and Kristi Hunt, both of Independence, and Dana Jolliffe and Tracy Gibson, both of Kansas City; one brother, Clarence Botts, Lompoc, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services were today at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to D.A.D. (Dollars Agaist Diabetes), in care of Sheet Metal Workers Local 2, 2902 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64129.

CHARLIE S. CERVANTES

Charlie Sue Cervantes, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Cervantes was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Whitewright, Texas. She had worked in the restaurant business for 62 years throughout the Midwest, including Texas, Oklahoma and on the West Coast. She was currently the senior server at the Colony Steak House and the Lobster Pot. She was involved in ownership and management at La Louisiane Restaurant, The Kontiki Room, and Jimmy and Mary`s Steak House.

Her survivors include a son, Billy Miller, Oak Grove; two grandchildren, Terrie Sue Miller of the home, and Richard Williams, Independence; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Miller.

Private services will be Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Longview Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Longview Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital.

EDNA N. COMER

Edna N. Comer, 87, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Comer was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Oklahoma and had lived in this area most of her life. She was an executive housekeeper of several Kansas City hotels for 30 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence.

Her survivors include a daughter, Norma J. Smith, Independence; two sisters, Elsie Shaffer, Marshall, Okla., and Juanita Holsinger, Perkins, Okla.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Pence, Blue Springs; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

JUDY K. WALLACE

Judy K. Wallace, 54, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998.

Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by one son, Larry Lane Wallace, Dec. 16, 1983.

Her survivors include her husband, Clyde Carol Wallace of the home; a son, Brian CarolWallace, Blue Springs; a brother, Larry Joseph Roberts, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hackleman & Sons Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs. Visitation will beginat 7 p.m. Thursday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home.
