EMMA PACK

Emma Pack, 96, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

She was born Oct. 19, 1901, in Independence. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a great-nephew, Darren C. Pack of Blue Springs.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery.

LOLA M. PARK

Lola Margaret Park, 94, Pleasant Valley, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at the Pleasant Valley Manor.

Mrs. Park was born March 11, 1904, in Kidder, Mo., and had lived in Wichita, Kan., for 17 years before moving to Independence in 1974. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence and Order of the Eastern Star Golden Gate Chapter 58. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eckles Park, and a son, James Edward Park.

Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and JoAnn Park, Weslaco, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Greenlawn cemetery, Kansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

MYRTLE H. PETERSON

Myrtle H. Peterson, 86, Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Peterson was born Feb. 6, 1912, in Bristow, Okla. She was a bookkeeper for Knoepkers Department Store for 30 years, retiring in 1977. Her husband, Claude F. Peterson, died in 1988.

Her survivors include one sister, Bunnie Richner, Kansas City; one brother, Albert Goodmon, Choctaw, Okla.; four nieces, Ora Mae Simpson, Virginia Eichenberger, Mary Erickson and Judy Wood; and three nephews, Jim Stewart, Lauren Jackson and Paul Jackson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

WILDA R. TORHAN

Wilda R. Kelly Torhan, 68, Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at her home.

Mr. Torhan was born in Donora, Pa., and had lived in Wilmington, N.C., most of her life. She moved to Independence 10 years ago. She was a school teacher in Wilmington for 15 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Cornerstone RLDS congregation. Her husband, John Torhan, died in 1988.

Her survivors include one son, John T. Torhan, Atlanta; one daughter, Terri Martin, Independence; one sister, Mary Frances Pasterick, Charleston, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the church; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

DONALD E. BARNETT

Donald E. Barnett, 77, Appleton City, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Barnett was born July 25, 1921, in Independence, and lived in Independence most of his life, moving to Appleton City two years ago. He was a chiropractor for 30 years in Independence and Clay County, Mo., until 1985, and had been a school bus driver for the past several years, with the Independence and Grandview school districts. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Appleton City. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 1st Infantry "Big Red 1, " and was a member of the Blue Springs American Legion. His son, Kevin E. Barnett, died in 1985.

His survivors include one daughter, Donalene M. Maynard, Orrick, Mo.; one sister, Violet Cole, Kansas City; and two granddaughters.

Cremation; with memorial services being held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel, Independence. The family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army.

RICHARD L. BUYS

Richard Lee Buys, 55, Independence, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Buys was born May 4, 1943, in Kansas City, and lived in Glennwood, Iowa, until 17 years of age. He lived in the Kansas City area most of his life, and in Independence for four years. He worked for Blue Hills Country Club for 20 years, and had taken early retirement. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward of the Independence Branch. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Sonja Sharpley in 1977, and a stepgrandson, Fain Reese in 1992.

His survivors include his wife, Dora Buys of the home; three stepsons, Richard Wayne Sharpley, Boulder, Colo., Shawn Jacob Sharpley, Blue Springs, and Dana Dewayne Sharpley, Euless, Texas; and one stepdaughter, Patricia Elizabeth Scott, Concord, Ark.

Services are pending. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the home, 819 S. Emery in Independence. Contributions are suggested to the family to help defray funeral expenses. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence.

BEVERLY J. COOP

Beverly Jean Coop, 62, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at the Life Care Center of Grandview.

Mrs. Coop was born July 3, 1936, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and lived in Camas, Wash., before moving to Independence in 1977. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Blue Springs Restoration Branch Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Jack Coop of the home; two daughters, Nancy Oakes and Patricia Burns, both of Blue Springs; and three grandchildren, Jacob and Timothy Oakes, and Nicholas Burns.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

J.B. DUNSON

J.B. "Buddy" Dunson, 72, Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998.

Mr. Dunson was born in Pine Spring, Texas, and had lived in Blue Springs for approximately 10 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. For 31 years, he was employed by Navajo/ABF Frieght Lines in Amarillo and Kansas City. He was a member of the auxiliary at High Plains Baptist Hospital for 15 years. He was a member and a deacon of Trinity Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Janie Dunson; a daughter, Linda Farmer, Blue Springs; a son, Dalan Dunson, Lone Jack; a sister, Doris Doak, Cleburne, Texas; and a brother, Kenneth Dunson, Cleburne.

Services were Aug. 14, 1998, at Trinity Baptist Church. Burial was in Memory Gardens cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Baptist St. Anthony`s Hospice and Life Enrichment Center, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, Texas 79176-0001.

GEORGE O. FRANKE

George O. Franke, 83, Blue Springs, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Blue Springs. He was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Ownesville, Mo.

Mr. Franke worked as an engineer/draftsman for the Federal Aviaition Adminsitration. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a liftime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6603, and a member of American Legion Post No. 499. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Blue Springs. He was also a member of the Blue Springs Historical Society.

Mr. Franke was preceded in death by his son, Greg Franke, in 1983.

He is survived by his wife Jean Franke, of the home; a son Jeff Franke, Blue Springs; and stepson John Cash, Springville, Tenn; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Friends may call beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery.

The family recommends memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs.

JOHN E. HERSHBERGER

John Everett Hershberger, 66, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998.

Mr. Hershberger was born May 7, 1932, in Gallatin, Mo. He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in Korea and Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Hershberger in 1993.

His survivors include his daughter, Toni Sayers, Lee's Summit; a son, Alan Hershberger, Warsaw, Mo.; a sister, Martha Kelley, Stover, Mo.; three brothers, Charles H. Hershberger Jr., Independence, Kenneth Hershberger, Gallatin, Mo., and James Hershberger, Jacksonville, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Katie and Annie Sayers.

Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the KC Hospice.

JUANITA L. MCLELLAND

Juanita McLelland, 74, Blue Springs, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998 in her home.

She was born Dec. 31, 1923 in Deepwater, Mo.

She worked for Allied Signal as an electronic assembler and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. After her retirement, she worked for Dollar General Store in Blue Springs. She was a member of the Duncan Road Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail McKay, Blue Springs; son Bruce McLelland, Blue Springs; brothers Charels W. Rice, Blue Springs; and brother Marshall E. Rice, Independence; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and last until the time of the service. The family recommends memorial contributions to the Heart of America Hospice.

AVA J. TODD

Ava J. Todd, 78, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 in the Independence Health Care Center. She was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Stella, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Todd, in 1977.

Mrs. Todd worked for Merchant's Bank for 32 years. She retired in 1984 when she was manager of the safe deposits area. She attended the Community Christian Church of Kansas City.

She is survived by her sons Charles Todd, Independence, and John Todd, Wichita, Kan.; one sister Alma Miller, Neosho, Mo.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in the D.W. Newcomers' Sons Noland Road Chapel, with burial to follow in Greenlawn cemetery, Kansas City. The family recommends memorial contributions to the Childrens Mercy Hospital.

EUNICE C. DAY

Eunice C. Day, 77, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, in Clarksville, Tenn.

Mrs. Day was born April 30, 1921, in Linn, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Paul E. Day, and one daughter, Patricia Warren.

Her survivors include one sister, Loretta Howard; four brothers; one son, Dennis V. Day, Clarksville, Tenn.; one daughter, Sandra Hilden, Independence; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call at 7 p.m., Sunday, at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.

LORA L. STRACHAN FLETCHER

Lora L. Strachan Fletcher, 82, Lee's Summit, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Fletcher was born July 2, 1916, in Youngstown, Ohio, and had lived in the Kansas city area since 1935. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Lee's Summit congregation. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Great Bend, Kan., Eagles Auxiliary. She was a 1934 graduate of William Chrisman High School. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Charles, in 1985, and her 14-month-old great grandson, Matthew, in 1997.

Her survivors include two sons and their wives; Clark and Dena Fletcher, Lake Lotawana, and Dick and Sharon Fletcher, Smithville, Mo.; five grandchildren, Bob and Mellody Fletcher, Rick and Tina Fletcher, Len Fletcher, Debbie and Gene Gilmore; 10 great-grandchildren and a sister, Louise Brooks, Cleveland, Ohio.

Services will be at 7 p.m., Monday, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, at the Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend, Kan. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to service time on Monday. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
