BLANCHE BARBARA HESS

Blanche Barbara Hess, 80, Smithville, Mo., died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at the Beverly Health and Rehab in Smithville.

Mrs. Hess was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Smithville, where she graduated from high school. She attended Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg. She worked at Spelman Memorial Hospital in Smithville and also sold real estate for ERA in the Smithville area. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star both in Smithville. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Mast Barber in 1946, and her second husband, George Hess in 1985, and a son, Gary Lloyd Barber.

Her survivors include three sons, Fred Barber, Atlanta, Ga., Kenny Barber, Smithville, and Jack Barber, Independence; a daughter, Marilyn Tyson, Smithville; a sister, Jane Wright, Arlington, Texas; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Cremation, with memorial services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Smithville. Inurnment will be in the IOOF cemetery, Smithville. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home of Gower, Mo.

VINCEL K. PEOPLES JR.

Vincel King "Vince" Peoples Jr., 53, Sugar Creek, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Peoples was born June 22, 1944, in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived most of his life in this area. He was Steward of Steel Workers, Local 1958. He was a member of St. Cyril`s Catholic Church.

His survivors include his wife, Marilyn Peoples of the home; two sons, Kenneth J. Peoples, Columbia, Mo., and Michael L. Peoples, Bucyrus, Kan.; a daughter, Diana M. Peoples, Bucyrus; three sisters, Iris Carolas, Portland, Ore., Sandra Jackson, Latour, Mo., and Judy Gentry, Aurora, Colo.; two brothers, Richard Peoples, Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Kevin Peoples, Kansas City; his mother, and Josephine Peoples, Kansas City.

Services will be at 7 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Shadow cemetery, Milan, Mo. Friends may call from 5 tonight until service time at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

FRIEND L. REEL SR.

Friend L. Reel Sr., 77, Independence, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Reel was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and had lived in Independence for 28 years. He retired as a chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service, having served during World War II. He then worked for Missouri Division of Employment as a job service representative for 20 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 1738 and the Bethel Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Jean Reel of the home; five sons, David Reel, Douglas Reel and Dwight Reel, all of Springfield, Mo., and Daniel Reel, Nixa, Mo., and Friend Reel Jr., Independence; two daughters, Dixie Cravens and Brenda Keith, both of Independence; four brothers, Robert Reel, Nebraska, Dwight Reel, New Hampshire, David Burbee, Lee`s Summit, and Roger Burbee, Springfield; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

MARGUERITE C. STEVENS

Marguerite C. Stevens, 87, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at the Blue Hills Health Care and Living Center.

Mrs. Stevens was born March 10, 1910, in Atherton, Mo., and had lived in Independence for most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ, Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Stevens on Feb. 20, 1996.

Her survivors include her son, Don Stevens, Overland Park, Kan.; a grandson, Michael Stevens; a granddaughter, Nancy Odle; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery.

VIOLET L. THORNE

Violet Lee Thorne, 38, Kansas City, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.

Ms. Thorne was born Sept. 27, 1959, in Springfield, Mass., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a licensed practical nurse for the Swope Parkway Health Center.

Her survivors include her mother, Beverly Thorne, Independence; two sisters, Mildred Thorne, Kansas City, and Joanne Simcoe, Independence; and a nephew, Chase Simcoe.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

POLLY A. TOLLIVER

Polly Ann Tolliver, 56, Independence, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.

Mrs. Tolliver was born July 5, 1941, in Kansas City and was a lifelong resident. She was a 1990 graduate of Avila College and had worked for the State of Missouri in the Division of Family Service and Aging. For the past several years she was a service coordinator with the Department of Mental Health Kansas City Regional Center.

Her survivors include two daughters, Lesley DiCarlo, Independence, and Stacey Donnici, Kansas City.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

DOROTHY M. BAZE

Dorothy Marie Baze, 77, Independence, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Baze was born June 17, 1920, in Kansas City. She worked at Crocke Pepper Box Co. for many years. She had been a volunteer for Salvation Army for approximately 20 years and had helped in the soup kitchen and other areas. She was a member of the Home League and was vice president of activities and was on the Board of Residents at Monterey Park Nursing Home.

Her survivors include a son, Harley Baze, Independence; a daughter, Dorothy Osborn, Nixa, Mo.; her companion, Frank Derkits, Independence; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army, 532 S. Main, Independence, Mo. 64057.

VIRGIL H. BRADSHAW

Virgil H. Bradshaw, 88, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at the Westwood Nursing Home in Clinton, Mo.

Mr. Bradshaw was born Oct. 5, 1909, in Benton County, Mo., and had lived in Warsaw, Mo., and Kansas City until returning to Warsaw after retirement in 1975. He was employed at Lake City Arsenal and worked as a machinist during the war years. In 1990 he moved to Grain Valley to live with his daughter and her family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Bradshaw on Aug. 31, 1996, and a daughter, Joyce Hodges on Sept. 27, 1997. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warsaw.

His survivors include a granddaughter, Tari Hodges, Independence; a son-in-law, Armand Hodges, Grain Valley; a sister, Wilma Barnhill, Independence; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Warsaw. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reser Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Warsaw.

GARY N. COE SR.

Gary N. Coe Sr., 45, Independence, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Care Center.

Mr. Coe was born July 27, 1952, in Kansas City and was a lifelong Independence resident. He worked for Overnite Merchandizer for seven years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence in 1973.

His survivors include his wife, Minnie Coe, Blue Springs; two sons, Christopher Kidwell and Gary Coe Jr., both of Blue Springs; two daughters, Stephanie Schroeder, Lexington, Mo., and Candace Coe, Blue Springs; his mother, Verda Wallace, Independence; his paternal grandmother, Bernice Scherlinger, Nevada, Mo.; eight sisters, Vickie Smith, Mary Hicks, Kathy Morris and Donna Wallace, all of Independence, Marie Cantrell, Blue Mound, Kan., Leslie Roberts, Maysville, Mo., Lori Smith, Nevada, and Suzanna Smith, Kirksville, Mo.; six brothers, Jimmy Wallace, Blue Springs, David Swan, Otto Modlin and Paul Modlin and Bill Modlin, all of Nevada, and Chris Birt, Kansas City; and five grandchildren.

Services were Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Brooking cemetery, Raytown.

JEWELL J. GAMMON

Jewell Josephine Gammon, 85, Odessa, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Gammon was born Aug. 20, 1912, in Odessa, and was a lifelong Odessa resident. She had worked for Pratt-Whitney during World War II and the Odessa Shoe Factory. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Martha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and past president of the Walnut Row Extension Club, and was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution Gilead Rupp Chapter and the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 286. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Odessa. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Roger Gammon on May 10, 1985, and a son, John William "Bill" Gammon on Oct. 31, 1991.

Her survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Keyserling, a son, Richard Gammon, a daughter-in-law, Elanore Gammon, all of Odessa; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

JACK C. HECKENDORN

Jack C. Heckendorn, 75, Kansas City, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center.

Mr. Heckendorn was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Seymour, Mo. He was a truck driver for Union Construction Co., retiring in 1980. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Hazelwood 459, Seymour, Kansas City Scottish Rites, Ararat

Temple, past president of Lake Lotawana Shrine Club and the Legion of Honor. He was a member of Teamsters Local 541 for 27 years. He was of the Episcopal faith.

His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Margaret Erb Heckendorn of the home; two daughters, Claudette Wilder, Blue Springs, and Roberta Charles, Flower Mound, Texas; two sisters, Janie Carpenter, Seymour, and Clarice Henderson, Arkansas City, Kan.; two brothers, Gordon Heckendorn and Cyrus Heckendorn, both of Seymour; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 today at St. Andrew`s Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City. Graveside services will be at 3 today at the Floral Hills cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Shriner`s Hospital, Children`s Mercy Hospital, St. Andrew`s Episcopal Church Music Program or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Carson`s Funeral Home, Blue Ridge Chapel.

JOHN J. KAYLOR SR.

John J. Kaylor Sr., 89, Blue Springs, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Kaylor was born July 24, 1908, in Marshall, Mo., and he had lived in the Nashville, Tenn., area until 1953, when he moved to Independence then to Blue Springs in 1993. He was a charter member of the former Rose Valley Deaf Church. He was a pilot instructor in the Army Air Force during World War II. He retired in 1969 from Ward Electrical in Kansas City. He was chief of security of Glendale Apartments from 1974 to 1991.

His survivors include his wife of 45 years, Willie Lacey Kaylor of the home; a daughter, Iris A. Harris, Smyrna, Tenn.; three sons, Donald L. Kaylor, Nashville, Tenn., John "Jerry" Kaylor Jr., Blue Springs; James Jeffrey Kaylor, South Lake, Texas; a brother, Samuel M. Kaylor, Nashville; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Royer Funeral home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the St. Mary`s Hospice.

ANDREW M. LADE

Andrew Michael Lade, infant son of Richard and Nancy Lade of Buckner, died Monday, March 16, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Andrew Michael is also survived by two sisters, Sarah and Amanda, and a brother, David, all of the home; his grandparents, Richard and June Lade, Independence, and Joseph and Nina Lewis, Independence; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mound Grove cemetery. A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the South Crysler Restoration Branch, 16101 Salisbury Road, Independence. The family will receive friends following the service.

FREDA L. CLOUGHLEY

Freda Lee Cloughley, 82, Independence, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Cloughley was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Louisville, Ky., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was a member of the Church of God International. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lawrence Cloughley in 1973.

Her survivors include three daughters, Suzann Settle, Atlanta, Ga., Julie Tuttle and Barbara Cloughley, both of Independence; a sister, Winnie Johnson, Seal Beach, Calif.; four granddaughters and a great-grandson.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
