FRANCISCO BAUTISTA JR.

Francisco Bautista Jr., infant son of Francisco and Rosi Bautista of Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at the Columbia Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The infant died the day of his birth, Jan. 7, 1998, at the medical center.

In addition to his parents, his survivors also include his maternal grandparents, Cathy and Carlos Arregui; his paternal great-grandmother, Maria Rivera; his maternal great-grandmother, Maria Mata, all of Kansas City; and his paternal great-grandmother, Margarita Bautista, Mexico.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until service time at the chapel.

DOROTHY EDNA HIRE BELL

Dorothy Edna Hire Bell, 84, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Alvin, Texas. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery.

Mrs. Bellwas born in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne A. Hire, and her second husband, Arthur J. Bell.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Hire, and a special daughter, Lou Powell, both of Alvin, Texas.

Arrangements are at the direction of the South Park Funeral Home in Peraland, Texas.

WILLIAM RALPH BERTZ

William Ralph Bertz, 46, Oak Grove, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Bertz was born Sept. 10, 1951, in Lexington, Mo. He was a cable splicer for United Telephone and Sprint. He had attended the Christ Church-Episcopal in Lexington. He married Marla (Pollard) Bertz on July 15, 1995.

Mr. Bertz was preceded in death by his father, William Edgar Bertz.

Survivors include his wife, Marla Bertz of the home; two sons, Lyle Bertz, Kansas City, and Spencer Bertz of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Bertz, Odessa, Mo., and Kate Bertz, Higginsville, Mo.; four grandchildren; and his mother, Rosemary (Allen) Bertz of Lexington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Walker-Nadler Funeral Home, Lexington. Visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Lexington Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice.

MARY E. EMERY

Mary Elizabeth Emery, 78, Oak Grove, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Emery was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Cedar County, Mo. She lived in Nevada, Mo., most of her life until moving to Oak Grove in 1990. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Nevada.

Mrs. Emery worked in the family business, Vince Emery Marine Supply, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her son, Evan Emery in 1977, a sister, Lucille Boundy, and two brothers, Walter and Melvin Evans.

Her survivors include her husband, Vincel Emery of the home; a daughter, Judy Richard, Oak Grove; two sisters, Pat Hargrove, Nevada, and Gayle Hoge, Stockton, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ROBERT DEAN HOLLINGSWORTH

Robert Dean Hollingsworth, 58, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at the Lourdes Hospital, Paducah, Ky.

Mr. Hollingsworth was born May 23, 1939, in Mack`s Creek, Mo., and lived in Independence and Blue Springs for more than 38 years.He was a salesman for more than 30 years with Zephyr Awning Co. in Kansas City before retiring in 1966. He was a deacon at the Jericho Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janice of the home; two daughters, Cyndi Schulze, and Diana Waisner, both of Blue Springs; three grandchildren, Shelby, Landon and Tyler, all of Blue Springs; and his mother, Gladys Woods of Ozark, Mo.

Services will be 10 a.m. Sunday at the Jericho Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery, Mack`s Creek. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel.

WANDA R. LAWSON

Wanda R. Lawson, 58, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Lawson was born Oct. 31, 1939, in Independence and was a life-long resident. She was a homemaker and member of the Humane Society. Survivors include her husband, James H. Lawson of the home; two daughters, Janet Gee, Merriam, Kan., and Sharon Oldham, Overland Park, Kan.; four sons, Fred Foster, Lawrenceburg, Ind., Roger Foster, Raytown, Dwayne Foster, Sedona, Ariz., and Steve Lawson, Grain Valley; a brother, Al Mawhiney, Blue Springs; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at George C. Carson and Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sundayat the chapel. Burial will be at Mt. Washington cemetery.

TROY A. THOMAS

Troy Alexander Thomas, 26, Indianapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Thomas was born March 4, 1971, in Kansas City, Mo., and lived in Independence from 1971 until moving to Indianapolis in 1993. He worked at the Palomino Bar and Restaurant and was a member of the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Independence.

His survivors include a son, Christian A. Thomas, Indianapolis; mother and stepfather, Muriel and Jerry Woodburn, Independence; father and stepmother, Robert and Barbara Thomas, Indianapolis; a brother, Travis Morris, Independence; grandmothers, Dorothy Rudd, Kansas City, Kan., and Audrey Thomas, Independence; and three aunts, Diana Rudd-Shaffer, Debbie Rudd-Lynch andBarbara Pendergraft.

Services were Jan. 5, 1998, at the church; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Christian Thomas trust fund, in care of Muriel Woodburn, 16700 Ellison Way, Independence, Mo. 64055. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

MARY A. ARTHUR

Mary Antoinette Arthur of Kansas City died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center.

Mrs. Arthur was born in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a medical records clerk for General Hospital and was a news script editor for WDAF TV, Channel 4, for 18 years. She was a Catholic.

Her survivors include one son, Gene Arthur, Independence; one daughter, Patricia Guinn, West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was today at the Jeanne Jugan Center, Little Sisters of the Poor. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

JACK M. BEHRINGER SR.

Jack M. Behringer Sr., 69, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Behringer was born April 3, 1928, in Tacoma, Wash. He owned and operated a gas station, Behringer and Sons, and retired from Jackson County as a building director of the Independence Courthouse. He had served in the U.S. Army, the National Guard and the Merchant Marines. He was baptized in June 1997.

His survivors include his wife, Deloras B. McVey Behringer; one daughter, Jacqueline Dorman; three sons, Jack Behringer Jr., Michael McVey and Patrick McVey; one brother, Warren Behringer, Big Bear Lake, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Kristen McVey, Christin McVey, Valle McVey, Amanda Dorman, Rachel Dorman, Jonas McVey, Christopher McVey and Lorenzo Dorman; and one great-grandson, Connor McVey.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

JACK V. COOK

Jack V. Cook, 88, Sugar Creek, died Thursday, Jan.8, 1998, at Research Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Cook was born April 29, 1909, in Macon, Mo., and was a lifelong area resident. He was a crane operator for Armco Steel for 38 years, retiring in 1976, and was a member of AFLCIO LocalSteel Workers 13. He was a member of New Haven Baptist Church. His wife, Delores Cook, died in 1992.

His survivors include two daughters, Janice Lawton, Sugar Creek, and Wanda Glines, Fair Play, Mo.; three brothers, Denver Cook, Buckner, Everette Cook, Brownsville, Texas, and Ernest Cook, Independence; one sister, Betty Pinkerman, Belleview, Mo.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

EDITH C. FERRELL

Edith Charlene Ferrell, 58, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Truman Medical Center East, Kansas City.

Mrs. Ferrell was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. Her husband, Willard Ferrell, also died Jan. 3, 1998.

Her survivors include three sons, Ernest Hamilton Jr., Matthew Hamilton and Thomas Hamilton, all of Independence; five daughters, Cecelia Hamilton, Ella Burgess, Melissa Cary and Ethel Hamilton, all of Independence, and Eva Hamilton, Gladstone, Mo.; three brothers, Jerry Nichelson, Dallas, Dwight Nichelson, Independence, and Ted Nichelson, Buckner; and 23 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center Chapel, 1509 W. Truman Road; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mortician`s Service, Kansas City.

WILLARD C. FERRELL

Willard Clyde Ferrell, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Ferrell was born June 16, 1919, in Appalachia, Va., and had lived in this area most of his life. He retired in 1984 from Hanna Rubber Co., Kansas City, with 12 years of service. He was a member of the Star Twirlers Square Dancers. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Ferrell, who also died on Jan.3, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Redina Martin on Nov. 19, 1997.

His survivors include four sons, Ron Ferrell, Grandview, Mo., Bill Ferrell, Creighton, Mo., Larry Ferrell, Columbia, Kan., and Frankie Ferrell, Claremore, Okla.; a daughter, Crystal Morris, Ironton, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Private services; cremation. Entombment will be in Lawrence, Kan. Arrangements are under the direction of Mortician`s Services, Kansas City.

MARY LYFORD

Mary Baker Lyford, 83, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, in Kansas City.

Miss Lyford was born Sept. 25, 1914, in Helena, Ark., and had lived in Osceola, Ark., before moving to Independence four years ago. She was a banker with the Union Planters National Bank in West Memphis, Ark., for 30 years, retiring in the late 1970s. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Her survivors include one sister, Dora Anderson, Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews, including Mary Nesselrode of Independence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

JOHN L. POLSTON

John L. Polston, 94, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Independence.

Mr. Polston was born June 6, 1903, in Arcadia, Kan., and moved to Kansas City in 1932. He was a business man in the Kansas City area for more than 40 years. Prior to that, he was a building contractor in the four state area. He was fiscal officer of Crawford County (Kan.) for six years, and served as county clerk of Crawford County from 1943 to 1949. Before moving to this area, he worked for C.H. Baker in Cherokee, Okla. He had been a member of the Mirza Shrine Temple in Pittsburg, Kan., for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Pittsburg and the Masonic Lodge of Girard, Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. Polston.

His survivors include three daughters, Jonnie Ruth Pollock, Independence, Fayanne Hoffman, Joplin, Mo., and Dr. Shirley Jo Miller, North Providence, R.I.; one son, Stephen Lee Polston, Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Lawrence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 815 Market St., Galveston, Texas 77550.

EVELYN H. TIPTON

Evelyn Henrietta Williams Tipton, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Tipton was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Tarkio, Mo., and lived in Chicago from 1964 to 1991. She moved to Independence six years ago. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Her husband, Elmer Tipton, died in1987.

Her survivors include two daughters, Patricia M. Marrison, Elkhart, Ind., and Sondra N. Klaft, Ocean Springs, Miss.; three sisters, Jewel Shingleton, Harrisonville, Mo., Juanita Villers, Liberty, Mo., and Laverne McNeil, Lee`s Summit; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6p.m. Sunday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.
