BERNARD F. "BEN" ALLEN

Bernard Floyd "Ben" Allen, 74, Lake Lotawana, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mr. Allen was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Little Rock, Ark., and lived in California and Kansas City before moving to Lake Lotawana 25 years ago. He retired from Western Electric after 22 years of service, and owned and operated Independence U-Cart.

His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty A. Allen of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carol Allen, Maysville, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Bob Shields, Kansas City, North, and Sue and Tim Renfroe, Oak Grove; a brother, Boyd Allen, La Mirada, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Carson Funeral Home, Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

LEONA F. BARWISE

Leona F. Barwise, 82, Stratford, Conn., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Barwise was born June 25, 1916, in Commerce, Okla. She was a 1939 graduate of the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing. She was a teacher in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a Hospice volunteer, and a contributing writer for the Daily Bread and the Saints Herald.

Her survivors include her husband, Frank W. Barwise of Independence; a son, Bill Barwise, and his life partner, Alan Busek, both of Stratford; and a sister, Inez Smith, Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Outreach International.

JOHN H. CASTLE

John H. Castle, 94, Pleasant Hill, Calif., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, in Pleasant Hill.

Mr. Castle was formerly of Independence and a native of Chicago, Ill. He had lived in Pleasant Hill for 37 years. He was a news agent for the Santa Fe Railroad, and after his retirement, he and his wife owned and operated the Antique Warehouse in Pleasant Hill for 28 years.

His survivors include his wife of 39 years, Blanche O. Castle; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Joyce and Ralph Haskins, Independence, Shirley and Bob Weaver, Sugar Creek, and Barbara and Joe Cali, Carrollton, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Castle was cremated and his ashes were recently returned to Independence. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills cemetery, Raytown. Graveside services will immediately follow the memorial services at Floral Hills cemetery.

PATRICIA J. MANSUR

Patricia Jo Mansur, 52, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Mansur was born Nov. 20, 1945, in Osage City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Greenway, and her grandmother, Dessie Runyon.

Her survivors include her husband of 36 years, Richard Mansur of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Steven Dennis, Oak Grove, and JoAnna and Scott Morris, Independence; her mother, Betty Greenway, Kansas City; a sister, Connie Welsh, Independence; four grandchildren, Jason and Amanda Dennis, and Kristen and Michelle Morris; and three nieces.

Services will be 9 a.m. Friday at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Osage City cemetery, with commital services at 1 p.m. Friday at the cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

WILBURN H. THIEN

Wilburn Henry Thien, 65, Deepwater, Mo., formerly of Oak Grove, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at the Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Thien was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Knippa, Texas, and had lived in Lee`s Summit and Oak Grove before moving to Deepwater a year ago. He was the assistant superintendent of a fish hatchery for the Oregon State Game Commission and had been a custodian for the Lee`s Summit and Grain Valley school districts before retiring in 1996. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was an elder in the Restoration Branch church.

His survivors include his wife, Pearl Thien of the home; a son, Michael H. Thien, Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Patsy Marie Vaughn and Julie Ann Guichot, both of Oak Grove; two sisters, Arvilla Snoddy, Lebanon, Ore., and Ruby Weiss, Dallas, Ore.; and five grandchildren, Aaron and Sarah Hammar, Becky, Jessica and Michelle Thien.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

MARY A. CARR

Mary A. Carr, 97, Creighton, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Carr was born Aug. 10, 1901, in Jackson County. She was a homemaker, and a Christian by faith. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren.

Her survivors include four daughters, Mary B. Banks and Diane Krause, both of Independence, Virginia L. Crowder, Leeton, Mo., and Ann Friend, Creighton; three sons, Daniel D. Carr and John Carr, both of Independence, and William L. Carr, Gravois Mills, Mo.; 15 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

NEVA M. ELLIOTT

Neva M. Elliott, 96, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.

Mrs. Elliott was born Feb. 13, 1902, in Pleasant Hope, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She moved to Blue Springs four months ago. She was a member of the Nazarene Church. Her husband, Zillman Elliott, died in 1991.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Vernae L. and Olga Eliott, Independence; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the American Red Cross. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.

DAVID L. HAGERTY JR.

David L Hagerty Jr., 70, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mr. Hagerty was born Sept. 4, 1928, in Higginsville, Mo., and had lived in Blue Springs since 1979. He was a salesman and businessman in Higginsville and Blue Springs, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. John LaLande Catholic Church, Blue Springs, and the Country Club of Blue Springs, and a former member of the Rotary Club, American Legion, Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was an Army Signal Corps veteran of the Korean War, and a graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, where he lettered in golf.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy I. Barnes Hagerty of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David T. and Linda Hagerty, Pennington, N.J., and Matthew B. and Pam Hagerty, Blue Springs; a brother, John A. Hagerty, Higginsville; and three grandchildren, Megan, Beth and Patrick Hagerty.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary`s Catholic Church, Higginsville. Burial will be in Higginsville City cemetery. Friends may begin calling at 7 tonight at St. John LaLande, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, or the St. John LaLande building fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wiegers Funeral Home, Higginsville.

DONALD R. HORNE

Donald Raymond Horne, 82, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Horne was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Almora, Minn. He was a sheet metal journeyman for Juliff & Horne for 18 years until his retirement. He was a farmer in the 1940s and a supervisor for General Mills for 12 years. He was a volunteer for the Independence Regional Health Center Hospice from 1988 to 1994, was ordained a deacon at the Gudgell Park RLDS Church in 1940, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Blue Springs Restoration Branch. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marabeth Rose Leibold Horne, on Oct. 18, 1985.

His survivors include his wife, Sue Collier Horne of the home; four children and their spouses, Gerald and Julie Horne, and Nancy and John Ince, all of Independence, and Sharon Nimmo, and Gwen and Bob Morlang, all of Blue Springs; two sisters, Lillian Leibold, Independence, and Myrtle Pauley, Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Verne Horne, Liberty, Mo., and Lyle Horne, Independence; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mound Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs Hospice or the church.

EARL I. MONTEER

Earl Ira Monteer, 69, Bates City, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Monteer was born Aug. 7, 1929, in Morgan County, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City northeast area and Florence, Mo., before moving to Bates City two years ago. He had been employed as a welder for Cramer Industrial in Kansas City, Kan., for 27 years, retiring in 1980.

His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David and Terri Monteer, Bates City; a daughter, Leta Monteer, Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandsons, Michael Monteer and Jake Monteer; and three granddaughters, Dawn Harris, Nicki Monteer and Miranda Monteer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Bates City cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Chapel.

RUSSELL J. BECKMAN

Russell James Beckman, 73, Kansas City, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Beckman was born in Dakota City, Iowa, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a broadcast engineer with various radio stations, including KMBZ and WDAF, was a Kansas City Reserve Police Officer for 30 years, and owned and operated Russell Beckman Reality in Kansas City and Independence for many years. He was a Methodist by faith, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrial Workers Local 1259.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Beckman of the home; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Vanessa Ainsworth, Independence, and Mable and Errett Russell, Sebring, Fla.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

LLOYD J. HAMILTON

Lloyd J. Hamilton, 77, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Hamilton was born April 21, 1921, in Independence. He was a mechanic for the Centroplis Transfer Co., retiring in 1974. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Betty L. Hamilton of the home; four daughters, Lloydita Thurber, Blue Springs, Diane Stroop, Raytown, and Vicky Blevins and Lois McDonald, both of Neodesha, Kan.; four sons, LeRoy Hamilton, Blue Springs, Larry Hamilton, Kingsville, David Hamilton, Warsaw, Mo., and Johnny Hamilton, Euphaula, Okla.; two sisters, Margaret Davis, Gassville, Ark., and Carol Conway, Wichita, Kan.; a brother, Richard Hamilton, California; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

MARY R. MATURO

Mary R. Maturo, 86, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Maturo was born Jan. 9, 1912, in Baton Rouge, La. She was a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church and lived in Independence most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Maturo, in 1981.

Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Nancy Maturo, Grain Valley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Carl Neidig, Gladstone, Mo., and Jacqueline and Chris Sager, Kansas City, North; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mass will be at 10 a.m., Monday, at St. Mark`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at Speaks Suburban Chapel. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude`s Children`s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105-1905.

VIRGIL JUNIOR OLESE

Virgil Junior Oles, 48, Independence, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Oles was born Jan. 24, 1950, in Kansas City. He was a laborer and worked for Bill Reser Construction for the past 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jo Oles, on Jan. 15, 1990.

His survivors include: one son, Stanley Oles, of the home; two daughters, Mary Oles, of the home, and Ruth Ann Fletcher, Independence; three brothers, George Jackson, Holden, Mo., and Charlie and Ben Oles, both of Sibley; two sisters, Linda Harmon, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Judy Fannin, Lee`s Summit.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Buckner cemetery. Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday, at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel.

WALTER E. POWERS

Walter E. Powers, 82, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Powers was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Kansas City. He retired from Bendix after 20 years of service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was recalled into active duty in 1950 to serve in the Korean War. He was a member of Independence Masonic Lodge 76.

His survivors include his wife, Marian I. Powers of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Jeannette Powers, Kansas City; two grandchildren, Carey Reinsch and Corbett Powers; a niece, Helen Chorak and a great-niece, Sherri Chorak, both of Blue Springs.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.

TONY R. SINNARD

Tony Ray Sinnard, 27, Fairbanks, Alaska, formerly of Independence, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, near Anchorage.

Mr. Sinnard was born May 22, 1971, in North Kansas City, and lived in Independence until moving to Fairbanks three years ago. He had lived in Houston three or four times, a few months at a time.

His survivors include his fiance, Rita Louise Saylor of the home; his father and stepmother, Larry and JoAnn Sinnard, Sanderson, Texas; his mother, Dorothy VanLanker, Independence; a sister, Holly Kamal, Houston; two brothers, Tim Sinnard, Independence, and Travis Sinnard, Houston; two stepbrothers, Brian Lumpkin and Wayne Lumpkin, both of Houston; his maternal grandfather, Abe Nichelson, Independence; and five nephews, Ryan Sinnard, Nazeem Kamal, Wesley Lumpkin, Christopher Lumpkin and Johnathan Lumpkin.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
