WILLIAM J. MAY

William Joseph May, 85, Oak Grove, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City.

Mr. May was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Ironwood, Mich. He was a 1930 graduate of L.L. Wright High School in Ironwood. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was discharged with the rank of Chief Boilermaker. He worked as a boiler inspector for many years until retirement. He was an active member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church for many years. He was also a member of the Grandview Masonic Lodge 618. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane Cartwright.

His survivors include his wife, Fayrene May of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Walsh, Shawnee, Kan., and Judith Longenberger, Granbury, Texas; a sister, Beth Kirby, Redford, Mich.; a brother, George May; six granddaughters, Cathy Reynolds, Erin Walsh, Michelle Metje, Kristin Kealy, Sandra Longenberger and Jill Dobelbower; a grandson, Brian Walsh; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

JAMES W. REX

James William Rex, 83, Raytown, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Cedar Valley Health Care Center.

Mr. Rex was born May 20, 1915, in Jasper, Mo., and had lived most of his life in the Kansas City area. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked as a railway mail clerk for the United States Postal Service before becoming a supervisor. He retired in 1976.

His survivors include his wife, Frieda G. Rex of the home; four daughters, Patricia Thum, Everett, Wash., Sandra Jean McCombs and Pamela Rex, both of Raytown, and Sharon Kay Martin, Blue Springs; a sister, Eugenia Baldwin, Lee's Summit; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Park Lawn Chapel. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

ANNA A. DENNIS

Anna A. Dennis, 71, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center, Kansas City.

Mrs. Dennis was born June 1, 1927, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She had been a real estate salesperson for Gaslight, Hardin-Stockton and Coldwell Banker. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, and served on the board of trustees. She was active in many civic organizations throughout her life, including the Junior Service League of Independence, president of the Jaycee Wives, state senator to the U.S. Jaycee Wives, and a docent at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Her husband, John W. Dennis Sr., died Dec. 4, 1995.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Alinda W. Dennis Jr., and a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine A. and Steven A. Brucker, all of Independence; two sisters, Lily Davenport and Katherine Caenepeel; a brother, John K. Lewis, and one granddaughter, Jordan Ann Dennis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, 100 N. Pleasant St., Independence, Mo. 64050. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel.

RACHEL S. GARDNER

Rachel Sheyenne Gardner, infant daughter of Michael D. and Sandra R. Gardner of Lake Lotawana, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Rachel was born Oct. 8, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center, Kansas City.

Her survivors also include her grandparents, Maj. Gen. John C. and Emily B. Raaen, Winter Park, Fla., and Melvin G. and Peggy Louise Gardner, Lake Lotawana; 12 aunts and uncles; and 15 cousins.

Services will be 8 a.m. Wednesday at Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Research Medical Center Foundation, 2316 E. Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, Mo. 64132. Arrangements are under the direction of the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit.

DAVID J. HANCOCK

David Jerome Hancock, 40, Tarkio, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Shenandoah (Iowa) Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Hancock was born April 9, 1958, in Springfield, Ill., and had lived in Tarkio since 1985. He was a 1976 graduate of Fort Osage High School, attended Central Missouri State University for two years, and in 1978, he transferred to Northwest Missouri State University, Mo. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1980, and began teaching accounting and business at the university. He received his master's degree in business administration in 1982, and from 1986 to 1990, he taught business and accounting at Tarkio (Mo.) College, and then returned to his position as instructor of accounting at Northwest.

He was a member and elder, as well as junior high Sunday school teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church, Shenandoah. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, Missouri Association of Accounting Educators and had served as director. He was a school board member of the Tarkio R-1 School District, a member of the Advisory Board for Tarkio Academy, a registered baseball umpire with the Missouri State High School Activities' Association, a member of the Northwest Missouri Officials' Association, was Umpire-in-Chief for the Continental Amateur Baseball Association, 11 and Under, and was a lifetime member of the Golf Society of the United States.

He spent countless hours volunteering as a coach for the youth baseball and basketball programs, served on numerous community, faculty and church activities, and was highly recognized as Counselor Advocate of the Year by the Northwest Missouri Counselor Association, and was honored at Northwest last year by receiving the Dean's Award for Service.

His survivors include his wife, Pamela Marie Crawford Hancock, a son, Derek, and a daughter, Angela, all of the home; his parents, Joan Hancock, Topeka, and Philip Hancock, Kansas City; two brothers, Peter Hancock, Topeka, and Ned Hancock, Overland Park, Kan.; and a sister, Amy Hancock, Bethesda, Md.

Services were today at the Tarkio High School Gymnasium. Burial will be in Tarkio Home cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the David Hancock Memorial Fund.

SGT. CLIFFORD POHLE

Sgt. Clifford Pohle, 72, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998.

Sgt. Pohle was born Feb. 11, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo. He retired in 1986 after serving 37 years with the Missouri Highway Patrol. He was twice a past commander of American Legion Post 499. He was a member of the Lexington Turner Society, ABC Bowling Association of Kansas City, and was a warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Ruth Pohle of the home; two sons, Connie A. Pohle and James C. Pohle, both of Lexington, Mo.; a brother, Carl Henry Pohle, Rolla; a sister, Lela Mae Steen, Rolla, Mo.; three grandsons; three stepgranddaughters; a great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; one stepgrandson; and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Walker-Nadler Chapel in Lexington with Mic-O-Say services at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Boy Scout Troop 318 in Lexington.

JOHN D. CANADAY

John D. Canaday, 69, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Canaday was born March 19, 1929, in Emporia, Kan. He was a foreman for Armco Steel for 19 years, and a risk control counselor for the Bituminous Insurance Co. in Kansas City for 15 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, and a 1946 graduate of Northeast High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence.

His survivors include his wife, Barbara Canaday of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, J. Douglas Canaday, Blue Springs, Kyle D. and Lynn Canaday, Lee's Summit, and Jamey J. and Pamela Lynn Canaday, Joplin, Mo.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Janice Plattner, Lenexa, Kan., and Jacquelin and Duane Russell, Olathe, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Beverly Pappageorge, Independence; a sister, Vee Gore, Lincoln, Mo./Dallas; and nine grandchildren, Tania, Angela, Erica, Jessica, Kylie, Kate, Carl, Jonathan and Alexander.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church or the Independence Regional Health Center Hospice.

IRENE E. GIFFIN

Irene Elizabeth Giffin, 87, House Springs, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Mrs. Giffin was born Feb. 18, 1911, in Ute, Iowa, and had lived in Independence until 1985. She was a registered nurse for the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital for 20 years, retiring in the 1980s. She was a Lutheran.

Her survivors include a son, Theodore James Giffin, San Angelo, Texas; a daughter, Janis Viessman, House Springs; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

FLORENCE A. HAMILTON

Florence Arlene Hamilton, 64, Raytown, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Cedar Valley Nursing Home in Raytown.

Mrs. Hamilton was born Dec. 19, 1934, and lived in Nebraska and South Dakota before moving to Raytown in 1996. She was preceded in death by her husbands.

Her survivors include five children, Linda "Lyn" Case, Kansas City, Jim Harder, Omaha, Neb., Deb Geier, Columbus, Neb., Lynn Geier, Norfolk, Neb., and Randy Prall, Alliance, Neb.; two brothers, Clarence Hansen, Napa, Calif., and Eugene Hansen, Miami; a sister, Shirley Crouse, Berthoud, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

Cremation, with burial in Alliance at a later date.

THOMAS R. PHIPPS

Thomas Richard Phipps, 54, Shawnee, Kan., died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Mr. Phipps was born Nov. 22, 1943, in Kansas City. He spent his teen-age years in Topeka, graduating from Topeka High School. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and had worked for Safeway/Food Barn/Cosentino's Sun Fresh for more than 30 years. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of Asbury United Mehtodist Church, Prairie Village, Kan., for more than 20 years, where he was actively involved as a United Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor.

His survivors include his wife of 32 years, Connie Margaret Moore Phipps of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Shelly and Steve Trenholm, Overland Park, Kan., and Christie Phipps, of the home; three sisters, Joyce Roberts, Leawood, Kan., Fritzi Hazelrigg, Independence, and Carol Gifford, Kansas City; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the church for the Special Youth Fund, however, flowers will be welcomed, no gladiolas please.

GUS SIRGINOUS

Gus Sirginous, 79, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at the Montery Park Nursing Center.

Mr. Sirginous was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He worked for Armco Steel for 32 years, retiring in 1978, and was a member of Steel Workers Union Local 13. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Tirey J. Ford American Legion Post 21. His wife, Audrey Sirginous, died in 1989.

His survivors include a brother, James Sirginous, Independence; three sisters, Viola "Vi" Compton and Marie Burns, both of Independence, and Teddy Ault, Stockton, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; and his private nurse, Vicky Tillman.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

LONA J. BAKER

Lona J. Baker, 84, Raytown, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Baker was born Aug. 31 1914, in Marion County, Ark., attended public school near Fritch, Ark., and moved to Kansas City as an adult. She was a retail clerk for Safeway Foods. She was an avid quilter and a longtime member of Calico Patches and Pieces Quilting groups. She was also a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple.

Her survivors include her husband of 64 years, Bennie L. Baker, Raytown; a daughter, Alice Jackie Baker Bell, Lake Quivera, Kan.; a son, Gary D. Baker, Lee's Summit; a brother, Con Shipman, Lincoln, Mo.; four grandchildren, Derek A. Herman and Tague A. Herman, Amy E. Trollinger and Seth M. Baker; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob A. and Colin S. Herman.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Crittenton.

MARY J. CLARK

Mary Jean Lentz Clark, 75, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, on the family farm in rural Independence where she was born.

Mrs. Clark was a teacher at Fort Osage junior and senior high schools, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Buckner Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, Ladies Aid and the Quilters group. She was also a member of the Independence Pioneer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as regent, first and second vice regent, secretary and chaplain. She served as the district director of the West Central division of MSDAR and awards chairman. She was a docent at Truman Library, having volunteered the past 12 years, giving tours to school groups and tourists. She was also a member of Osage chapter of AARP and the Friends of the Trails. She was a 4-H leader for 12 years, and had been active in Extension Service and Farm Bureau. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, and did further work at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, and UMC. Her husband, Alva "Pat" Clark, died in 1978.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and John Naples, Buckner, and Janice and Stanton Brown, Sibley; a brother, Roy Lentz, Raytown; and four grandchildren, Catherine and Anna Naples, and Patrick and Mary Brown.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Buckner United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church or the Kansas City Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

C. WARREN "PETE" HOLLOPETER

C. Warren "Pete" Hollopeter, 73, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Hollopeter was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Pratt, Kan. He was retired from the Vendo Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000 in Independence, and American Legion Post 499 in Blue Springs. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 3717, Independence, and Moose Lodge 10, Sugar Creek, where he held a merit degree of Pilgrim. He was preceded in death by a son, Garlin Hollopeter in 1986.

His survivors include his wife, Betty L. Hollopeter of the home;

a son, Michael Hollopeter, Missouri City, Texas; three daughters, Chleora Bergquist, Portland, Ore., Shirley Hayles, Las Vegas, Nev., and Kristy Eller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, Gary Wyatt, Independence; two sisters, Dorothy McGillivary, Ulysses, Kan., and June Schelhouse, Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may begin calling at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a Moose Lodge service will be held at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

MABEL JONES

Mabel Best Jones, 84, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 22, 1914, in Waukenda, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was the owner of a Tupperware distributorship, Best Friend Sales. She attended the Central Assembly of God Church, and was a member of the Soroptomist Club of Raytown, Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the American Business Women's Association.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Kay Best, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; three grandchildren, Christopher and Gregory Best, and Leighanne Ruby; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Chelsea, Nathan and Grace.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Park Lawn Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.
