FLORENCE F. GILLHAM

Florence Frances Gillham, 77, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Gillham was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Kansas City. She was a teacher at Nowlin Junior High School for 12 years. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in education, and held a master's degree from UMKC. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Independence Young Matrons and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, James L. Gillham; a son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Beverly Gillham; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Lynn R. Solomon; three grandchildren, Scott and Jana Solomon, and Joshua Davis; a sister, Joan Carpenter; and a niece, Patricia Carpenter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

ARTHUR "PETE" POLLOCK

Arthur "Pete" Pollock, 84, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Pollock was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Nelsonville, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1950. He was a service foreman for the city of Independence Power and Light for 20 years, retiring in 1976, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 93. He was an Army combat veteran of World War II, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was also a member of Sterling Acres Baptist Church. His wife, Ruvie Pollock, died in June 1970.

His survivors include two sons, William H. Pollock and Guy R. Pollock, both of Independence; six grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Scott, Lewistown, Mo.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

WILLIAM H. SHAFT JR.

William H. Shaft Jr. of Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at the Regency Care Center.

Mr. Shaft was born May 19, 1929, in Cottonwood Falls, Kan. He retired in 1992 from Summit Structural Steel. He served five years in the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21. He was also a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a graduate of Wyandotte County High School and Kansas City Metropolitan Junior College.

His survivors include his wife of 36 years, Jerri Shaft of the home; and a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Marie and Tim Davis, and one granddaughter, Brianna, all of Lansing, Kan.

Private services and burial will be in Prairie Grove cemetery, Cottonwood Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Independence Regional Health Center Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown Bennett Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls.

LLOYD GRAY

Lloyd Gray, 77, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in El Dorado Springs, Mo.

Mr. Gray was born June 1, 1921, in Dewar, Okla., and had lived in this area for more than 49 years. He was a clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence.

His survivors include his wife, Ellen Gray of the home; two daughters, Mary C. Gray and Janice L. Gray, both of El Dorado Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Lobb cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

RUTH B. GREEN

Ruth B. Green, 88, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Green was born May 18, 1910, in Lee`s Summit. She was a member of the Lake Lotawana RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred T. Green in 1970, and an infant daughter.

Her survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

ORVILLE M. "JAY" BAKER

Orville Myres "Jay" Baker, 52, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Baker was born in Hallowell, Kan., and lived in Joplin, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1970. He had been a utility relief man at the Ford Motor Co. since 1970, and was a member of the United Auto Workers. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Baptist faith.

His survivors include three brothers, Glen L. Baker and Alfred E. Baker, both of Joplin, Freddie G. Baker, Reseda, Calif.; and two sisters, Joyce A. Crowder, Wyandotte, Okla., and Peggy F. Slankard, Joplin.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin. Burial will be in Seneca (Mo.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, the Good Samaritan Project, 3030 Walnut, Kansas City, Mo. 64108, or the Sister Servants of Mary, 800 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. 66102.

EDITH A. BEEDLE

Edith A. Beedle, 95, Lincoln, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, Mo.

Mrs. Beedle was born Nov. 28, 1902, in Winnebago, Minn., and had also lived in Renton, Wash., before living with her daughters in Eatonville, Wash., and Lincoln, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Living Word Assembly in Eatonville and the Abundant Life Church in Lincoln.

Her survivors include two daughters, Helen Fletcher, Lincoln, and Virginia Eastman, Eatonville; a brother, Lloyd Suhr, Bremerton, Wash.; two sisters, Helen Moore, Boise, Idaho, and Esther Toews, Rochester, Ill.; and seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Abundant Life Church, Lincoln. Burial will be in the Washington Memorial cemetery, Renton. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis-Miller Funeral Home, Lincoln.

GEORGIA E. STROUVILLE

Georgia E. Strouville, 85, Raytown, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Cedar Valley Health Center, Raytown.

Mrs. Strouville was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Coffeyville, Kan., and had lived in Independence before moving to Raytown. She had worked as a seamstress.

Her survivors include a daughter, June Knepp, Independence; five grandsons, Luther Floyd, John Floyd, Clyde Floyd, Fred Floyd, and Robert O. Williams Jr., Blue Springs; and three granddaughters, Shirley Floyd, Barbara Floyd and Ruth Ann Floyd, several great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

LORA PHILLIPS

Lora Phillips, 86, Oak Grove, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Phillips was born Jan. 13, 1913, in Lafayette County, Mo. She was a lifelong area resident and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Phillips in 1985, and a daughter, Sylvia Manuel in 1984, and two grandson, Roger Manuel and Ronald Manuel.

Her survivors include two sons, Martin Phillips, Oak Grove, and Jack Phillips, Houston, Texas; two daughters, Betty Elliott, Lone Jack, and Brenda McKinzie, Oak Grove; a brother, Delbert Williams, Blue Springs; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. Burial will be in Shore cemetery, southeast of Oak Grove. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. The family suggests contributions to the Shore cemetery Association.

GLADYS P. EICHENBERGER

Gladys P. Eichenberger, 85, Raytown, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Eichenberger was born March 27, 1912, in Denison, Texas, and had lived in this area most of her life. She moved to Raytown one year ago. She was an inspector at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 33 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Independence Boulevard Christian Church, chapter member of Lodge 329 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Independence. She was also a member of Assembly of 150 Beauceants, Royal Arch Widow and the Beau Knot Sunday School class of the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. George Eichenberger Sr. in 1971, and a son, H. George Eichenberger Jr., and adaughter, Ruth M. Townley, both in 1995.

Her survivors include two daughters, Margaret Hawkins, Gravois Mills, Mo., and Mary Luppens, Independence; a son, Harvey Townley, Springfield, Va.; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, where Eastern Star services will be held at 7 p.m.

BILLY G. LAUGHLIN

Billy G. Laughlin, 63, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Laughlin was born March 19, 1934, in New Madrid, Mo. He worked for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1988, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs.

His survivors include his wife, Betty Laughlin of the home; a daughter, Vicky Henson, Blue Springs; a son, Randy Laughlin, Baton Rouge, La.; two brothers, Jimmy L. Laughlin, Columbia, Mo., and Wayne J. Laughlin, O`Fallon, Mo.; four sisters, Betty Bosert, St. Charles, Mo., and Mildred Cain, Bonnie Merrett and Karen Williams, Eldon, Mo.; four granddaughters, Vanessa Callaghan, Deret Laughlin, Madison Laughlin and Sydney Laughlin.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

KARL W. MORGENROTH

Karl W. Morgenroth, 72, Kansas City, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Morgenroth was born April 5, 1925, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 33 years, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Donna Morgenroth of the home; two sons, Kurt William Morgenroth andKarl Wendell Morgenroth; a daughter, Rena Marie Morgenroth; two brothers, Max Morgenroth, California, and Paul Morgenroth, Grain Valley; four grandchildren;and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation, with private burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to Baptist Home Services, 6700 Troost, Suite 10, Kansas City, Mo. 64131. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carson & Sons Blue Ridge Chapel.

PAUL J. POLLARD SR.

Paul Joseph Pollard Sr., 60, Richmond, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Liberty Hospital.

Mr. Pollard was born Feb. 5, 1938, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a lance corporal in the Marine Corps, serving in Hawaii and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

His survivors include his wife of 38 years, Judy Pollard of the home; two sons, Paul Pollard Jr., Blue Springs, and Walter Pollard, Independence; two daughters, Shirley Pollard, Buckner, and Donna Treas, Kansas; a brother, Leland Pollard, Lee`s Summit; two sisters, Ruby South Independence, and Judy Richardson, Kansas; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 2p.m. Thursday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

PATRICIA "Bunny" CULBERTSON

Patricia "Bunny" Culbertson, 69, Kansas City, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998.

Mrs. Culbertson was an Army veteran of World War II. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 1829 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 386. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe D. Culbertson on Dec. 6, 1997.

Her survivors include five sons, John Michael Culbertson, Charles Patrick Culbertson and Louis Allen Culbertson, all of the home, Timothy D. Culbertson, Blue Springs, and Joe D. Culbertson II, Raytown; two daughters, Glenda S. Casey, Raytown, and Susie Farrell, California; 11 grandchildren, including Christy Keen and April Keen.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Charter Funerals, 5000 Blue Ridge Cutoff. Burial will be in Culbertson cemetery, Collins, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

COURTNEY J. JACKSON

Courtney James Jackson, 84, Bates City, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Jackson was born Oct. 2, 1913, in Sedalia, Mo., and moved to the Bates City area in 1971. He had been an assembly line worker for General Motors Fairfax Division for 19 years, retiring in 1965. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arla V. Jackson on May 30, 1992.

His survivors include a son, Courtney M. Jackson, Independence.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the gravesite. Donations to your favorite charity are optional to flowers.

ROY B. MILLER

Roy B. Miller, 73, Independence, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Miller was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Derby, Va. He was a World War II U.S. Marine veteran. He was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenter`s Union Local 61. He was a member of the Independence American Legion.

His survivors include a son, Alan Miller, Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter, Karen Wignall, Casey, Iowa; three brothers, Quentin Miller, Richmond, Va., Kyle Miller, Tucson, Ariz., and Jimmy Miller, Clintwood, Va.; a sister, Mary Jo Willis, Clintwood, Va.; and three grandchildren, Jason and Jessica Miller, and Samantha Wignall.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Christian Family Services.
