PHILLIP J. BAKER

Phillip James Baker, 70, Independence, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Truman Medical Center.

Mr. Baker was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. He was an assistant prosecutor for Jackson County and a member of the Missouri Bar Association. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Kansas City and Phi Kappa Alpha. He was a graduate of Central High School, the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and the UMKC School of Journalism. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

His survivors include a stepson, Hudson Luce, Kansas City; two aunts, Muriel Farmer, Lee`s Summit, and Leota Nixon, Kansas City; and numerous cousins. He is also survived by the Waits family of the home, Charlotte, Dennis, Terry and Jim and their families.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

ESTHER M. BATEMAN

Esther M. Bateman, 72, Buckner, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Bateman was born March 13, 1926, in Frankford, Mo., and moved to Buckner in 1982. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald L. Bateman in 1997.

Her survivors include her husband of 53 years, Leon Bateman of the home; three brothers, Glen Ruby, Frankford, Lester Ruby, Holden, Mo., and Richard Ruby, Hannibal, Mo.; four sisters, Ruth Perkins, Frankford, Shirley Hamm, Louisiana, Mo., Charlotte Kerns, Curryville, Mo., and Zola Ellis, Frankford; one grandson, Bill Bateman; and one great-grandson, Dylan Bateman.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

THELMA C. HAWKINS

Thelma Carrie Hawkins, 93, Odessa, died April 20, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Home.

Mrs. Hawkins was born March 28, 1905, in Brookfield, Mo. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but recently attended the Odessa Restoration Branch

Church. She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and was a charter member of the Odessa Nutrition Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, George W. Hawkins on May 20, 1996.

Her survivors include a son, George Hawkins, Independence; a daughter, Norma Jean Kelly, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Dorothy Trent, Tulsa, Okla.; grandchildren, Tom and Michael Hawkins, Beth Hankins, Jennifer Warnock, and Scott Kelly; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hawkins, John Roach, Tyler and Sara Hankins, Joel and Erin Hawkins, Colin, Katie and Michael Warnock, and Sonny and Adam Kelly; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Husman-Sparks-McDowell Funeral Chapel, Odessa. Graveside services and burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.

ANDREW "BOSCO" LUKOMSKI JR.

Andrew "Bosco" Lukomski Jr., 80, Independence, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Lukomski was born Dec. 7, 1917, in Cement City, Mo., and was a lifelong Independence resident. He retired from General Motors Leeds Plant with 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Luke`s Byzantine Catholic Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II, earned four Bronze stars, a Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000.

His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Helen Lukomski of the home; a daughter, Mary Kathryn Teegarden, Sugar Creek; a brother, John Lukomski, Independence; six sisters, Ellen Novak, Sugar Creek, Anna Camerlinck, Clinton, Mo., and Katie Shalton, Martha Edmondson, Susie McMullen and Rose Spahr, all of Independence; two grandchildren, David Teegarden and Christie Goff; and five great-grandchildren.

Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Luke`s Byzantine Catholic Church, Sugar Creek. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, where graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 1000. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.

PATSY J. RICHEY

Patsy J. Richey, 59, Independence, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Richey was born Feb. 19, 1939, in St. Louis and had lived in this area since 1960. She worked for the Independence School District for six years, retiring in 1997. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Her survivors include her husband of 39 years, Rex Richey of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Darrell Schwalbach, Omaha, Neb., Terry and Gary Cleary, Holt, Mo., and Tammy and Tom McMahan, Independence; six brothers, Ralph, Doyle, William, Bob, Wilbern and Ronald McQuay; three sisters, Violet Adams, Mary Needham and Sharon Martin; and seven grandchildren, Travis, Kyle, Carson, Randi, Shane, Stefan and Rachel.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be 3 p.m. Friday at Whitecloud (Kan.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the Kansas City Hospice.

ZELLA F. RIPPEY

Zella Frances Rippey, 76, Independence, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital.

Ms. Rippey was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Independence. She retired from Kmart in 1989.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Cedric and Lydia Rippey, Independence; four grandchildren; four nieces; three nephews; seven great-nieces; 10 great-nephews; eight great-great-nieces; and nine great-great-nephews.

Services were today at the Second Baptist Church. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.

MICHAEL D. WELDON

Michael David Weldon, 52, Boulder, Colo., died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Weldon was born Oct. 22, 1945, in Warrensburg, Mo. He was a graduate of Bloomington, Minn., High School, and attended the University of Minnesota. He was a finance manager in automobile sales. He was preceded in death by his birth father, Naval Air Corps Lt. David Warren Allen, on May 29, 1945.

His survivors include two daughters, Sandra and Jerilyn; his parents, Fern and Chester Weldon, New Port Richey, Fla.; and a half brother, Stephen Weldon, Burnsville, Minn.; an uncle, Edmund Allen, Independence; and an aunt, Connie Heatherly, Warrensburg.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mound Grove cemetery.

JOHN H. JOHNSEN

John H. Johnsen, 83, Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Johnsen was born in Chicago, Ill., and had lived in Independence before moving to Sun City in 1974. He had been employed for 30 years for Amoco Refinery in Sugar Creek, retiring as manager in 1974. He was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church, Sun City. He was a member of Rotary and was president of the Boys Club in Independence. He also played trumpet in numerous orchestras.

His survivors include his wife, Gertrude Johnsen, Sun City; three daughters, Nancy Good, Joplin, Mo., Sandra Gramling, Overland Park, Kan., and Marty Belknap, Sterling, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

Services were today at the Faith Presbyterian Church, Sun City. The family suggests contributions to the Communtiy Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Avenue, Estes Park, Colo. 80517. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lundberg Mortuary, Youngtown, Ariz.

WILBURN W. "CHIEF" CREED

Wilburn W. "Chief" Creed, 60, Bates City, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center, Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Wilburn was born May 29, 1938, in Mt. Vernon, Mo., the son of Bruce and Rita (Biellier) Creed. He married Johnnie Sageser May 12, 1962. They lived in the Kansas City area before moving to Bates City in 1981. He was a retired road crew foreman with the Jackson County Public Works Dept.

He was preceded in death by his brother, David Creed.

He is survived by: his wife, Johnnie Creed, of the home; three sons, Bruce Winn, Mt. Vernon, Doug Winn, Mt. Vernon, and Terry Creed, Independence; two daughters, Kelly Austin, Manhattan, Kan., and Tracy Jackson, Kansas City, Mo.; his mother Rita Creed, Mt. Vernon; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Chapel.

JOSEPH DOUGLAS DYER

Joseph Douglas Dyer, infant son of Donald and Angela Marie Dyer, Independence, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

He is survived by his parents; grandmothers Harriet Patricia Gibson of Olive Branch, Miss., and Rebecca Buhrer, Independence; grandfathers James Dyer, Lee`s Summit, and Rocky Cantwell, Chickasha, Okla; grandparents Vera and Harold Cantwell, Oak Grove; great-grandparents John and Loval Dyer, Lee`s Summit; and great-great-grandmother Mary Firkins, Sibley.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 1998, in Speaks Suburban Chapel, with burial in Floral Hills East cemetery.

The family suggests contributions to the Independence Christian Center, 20201 E. Valley View Road., Independence.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

EVERETT H. PITTS

Everett H. Pitts, 78, Independence, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at his home, after a struggle with cancer.

Mr. Pitts was born June 5, 1919, in Marceline, Mo. He attended the Univeristy of Kansas where he joined the Theta Tau Fraternity. He worked for 31 years as a chemist for the Williams Co. and as an insurance agent for American Family.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine E. Pitts, of the home; sons Lawrence T. Pitts and Corry E. Pitts, both of Olathe, Kan.; a sister, Virginia Algaier, Marceline; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 8, 1998 at the Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice of the Northland. Arrangments are under the direction of the Carson and Son`s Independence Chapel.

HATTIE PRIDDY

Hattie Priddy, 91, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, June 3, at St. Mary`s Manor, Blue Springs.

She was born Sept. 8, 1909 in Nocona, Texas, the daughter of John C. and Margaret Ellen (Leonard) Weaver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Lee Priddy.

Mrs. Priddy was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by her sister, Lida Priddy, Nocona, Texas; sons David Priddy, Blue Springs, and Kenneth Priddy, Bowie, Texas; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are 1 p.m today in the Scott Morris Chapel, with burial in Nocona cemetery, Nocona, Texas.

DOROTHY M. RITSCHEL

Dorothy Mae Ritschel, 85, Independence, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Independence Health Care Center.

Mrs. Ritschel was born on May 31, 1913, in Oskaloosa, Kan. She was a homemaker.

Her survivors include a son, Jerome Ritschel, Stockton, Mo.; two daughters, Lauralee Daniels, Raytown, and Jacqueline Laughlin, Independence; a brother, Donald Maier, Texas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery, Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of New Salem Funeral Home.

HARVEY H. STEPHENS

Harvey Henry Stephens, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at the Rosewood Care Center, Independence.

Mr. Stephens was born May 4, 1912, in Puryear, Tenn., and had lived in Paris, Tenn., before moving to Independence. He was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of the Hico Church of Christ, Paris. He was preceded in death by his wives, Opa Stephens and Irene Stephens.

His survivors include two sisters, Violet Tyler, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Loetta Tyler, Independence; and four brothers, Lloyd Stephens and James W. Stephens, both of Paris, Williams V. Stephens, Florissant, Mo., and K. Johnson Stephens, Liberty.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the McEvoy Funeral Home Chapel, 507 W. Washington, Paris, Tenn. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Paris.

PATRICIA A. ADAMS

Patricia A. Adams, 54, Buckner, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Adams was born Feb. 27, 1944, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She was the cafeteria manager at Blue Hills School for the past 25 years. She was a graduate of East High School in Kansas City, was a member and secretary of the Kansas City Regional Fox Trotting Association for several years, and has shown her horse and won many ribbons and awards.

Her survivors include her husband of 36 years, Richard Adams of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Rusty and Joyce Adams, Oak Grove; a daughter and son-in-law, Dena and Mark Whitworth, and her mother, Marcella Roberts, all of Buckner; and two grandsons, Andrew and Anthony.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 2200 N. Blue Mills Road. Burial will be in Six Mile cemetery, Sibley. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the New Salem Funeral Home, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or Blue Hills School.
