VELMA A. TOMS

Velma A. Curtis Toms, 81, Atherton, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Toms was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Webb City, Mo., and moved to Atherton in 1929. She was a certified nursing assistant, retiring in 1984, and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Nephi C. Curtis in January 1978.

Her survivors include her husband, Howard Toms of the home; two sons, Lester C. "Bud" Curtis, Independence, and M. Gene Curtis, Blue Springs; three daughters, Clara M. Bailey and Maudie Curtis, both of Independence, and Linda Curtis, Durant, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

ROY R. BECKMAN

Roy R. Beckman, 87, Independence, died Friday, June 19, 1998, at Independence Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Beckman retired from Burd and Fletcher after 35 years of service. He was an army veteran of World War II. He was past president and past commander of Past Commanders Club of the American Legion Post No. 21. He was a service officer and past president of Last Man`s Club Disabled American Veteran`s Queen City Chapter No. 10, past commander of the Independence Patriotic Council, past chairman of the Selective Service Board, a member of the Polar Bear Association Combat Team No. 9 World War II, and a member of the Golden Rodent of International Order of Trench Rats Dugout No. 44.

He is survived by his wife Lena Beckman, of the home; a nephew and a grand niece and grand nephew.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Burial is at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

MABEL V. JORDAN

Mabel V. Jordan, 91, Independence, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Faucett, Mo. She worked as a school teacher in the Kansas City School District. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Christian Church. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Malcom Jordan in 1975.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. today at Muehlebach Funeral Home. Graveside services are 1 p.m. today at Memorial Park cemetery, St. Joseph, Mo. Memorials may be given to the Blue Ridge Christian Church.

ALAN E. LEWIS

Alan E. Lewis, 51, Kansas City, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 21, 1946, in Kansas City, Kan. He was an artist, guitarist and songwriter. He worked for Dearborn Midwest Conveyor.

His survivors include his wife, Riva Lewis, of the home; one son, Erik, and one daughter, Shelly Lewis, both of Kansas City; two brothers, John Lewis and James Manes, both of Independence; five sisters, Liz Lewis, Michelle Harris, Christy Grado and Jenny Manes, all of Independence, and Phyllis Tracy, Kansas City; and one grandchild.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Monday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. at the chapel.

EVLYN M. SHOTTON

Evlyn M. Whiting Shotton, 87, Oak Grove, died Tuesday, June 16, at her home.

Mrs. Shotton was born May 8, 1911, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and grew up and resided in Washington before moving to this area in the late 1970s. She served as Royal Matron of Amaronth and Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Washington. She was an active member of the Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ, serving as a teacher, counselor and musician.

Her survivors include her husband, James A. Shotton of the home; two daughters, Ralyn J. Baird, Seattle, Wash., and Sandra L. Davis, Syracuse, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Friday at the Mound Grove cemetery. The family suggests donations to the Independence Regional Health Center Hospice, 5105 Blue Ridge Blvd., Suite 101, Raytown. Arrangements were under the direction of Reppert Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

ALICE C. LILES

Alice C. Liles, 85, Independence, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Life Care Center, Grandview.

Mrs. Liles was born Oct. 8, 1912, in Jennings, Okla. She was a homemaker and a member of the Eastgate Assembly of God Church.

Her survivors include a son, Dean Liles, Odessa; four daughters, Joan Hartford, Grove, Okla., June Nelson, Belton, Mo., Peggy Weeks, Grandview, and Gloria Hoggatt, Shawnee, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services were today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

KARA E. DOTY SAY

Kara Elizabeth Doty Say, 23, Bates City, died Friday, June 26, 1998, in Oak Grove.

Mrs. Say was born Jan. 8, 1975, in Independence. She had been employed by Quicktrip Corp. in Oak Grove for the past five years, having recently been promoted to management. She was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple.

Her survivors include her parents, Clark and Laurie Doty, Bates City; her husband, Matthew Say, Independence; a brother, Troy Doty, Odessa; a sister, Lana Doty, Independence; her paternal grandmother, Virginia Doty, Kansas City; and her maternal grandfather, Lloyd Lightfoot, Oak Grove.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kansas City Baptist Temple. Burial will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the temple. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

WILLIAM S. STARKE JR.

Retired Army Col. William S. Starke Jr., 80, Blue Springs, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Starke was born May 18, 1918, in Lexington, Mo., and lived in Lexington before moving to Blue Springs six weeks ago. He retired as an Army colonel in 1970. During World War II, he was a tank commander in France, Germany and Austria. He also saw combat in Korea and did special military tours in Turkey, Alaska and Iran. After his retirement, he worked for Boatmen`s Bank and in real estae development in Dixon, Mo. He was a member of the Elks Club and several military service organizations, including the Heartland Chapter of the 11th Armored Division. He was preceded in death by a son, William S. Starke III in April 1998.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Heidi Starke, Blue Springs; four children, Linda Occhipinta, Raleigh, N.C., Thomas Peter Starke, Los Alamos, N.M., Patrick B. Starke, Blue Springs, and Lia Ream, Philadelphia; one brother, Robert Starke and one sister, Mary Ay, both of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were today at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lexington. Burial was in Machpelah cemetery, Lexington, where military graveside services were provided by the Fort Leavenworth Military Honors Team. Arrangements were under the direction of the Walker-Nadler Funeral Home, Lexington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.

JOE E. TOPI

Joe E.Topi, 79, Sugar Creek, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at the home.

Mr. Topi was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Sugar Creek, and was a lifelong resident. He attended Sugar Creek school and was a graduate of Northeast High School. He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he worked throughout Missouri. He joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant of Battery 127 Field Artillery, 35th Division during World War II. Following the war, he was a chief operator at Standard Oil Refinery in Sugar Creek where he was a member of the OCAW Union for 33 years. He was a Scout master and Assistant District Commissioner in the Boy Scouts of America, where he worked with youth for more than 30 years. He attained the rank of Sachem in The Tribe of Mic-O-Say and also earned the Wood Badge Award.

He was a lifelong member of St. Cyril`s Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of Jednota, the First Slovak Catholic Union. He was also a member of the American Legion, Conboy-Nichols Post 340 and the AMOCO Oil Refinery Retirees` Club.

His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Topi; a brother, John A. Topi, Kansas City; five sons, Stephen E. Topi, Sugar Creek, Michael A. Topi, Kearney, Mo., Joseph E. Topi Jr., Blue Springs, John T. Topi, Independence, and Martin A. Topi, Davenport, Iowa; three daughters, Elizabeth S. Pugh, St. Peters, Mo., Linda L. Heman and Mary Ann Wegener, both of Lee`s Summit; 23 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cyril`s Catholic Church, Sugar Creek. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m.

ROBERT M. APPLEBERRY

Robert M. Appleberry, 81, Independence, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Appleberry was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Springfield, Mo. He was a business representative for Local 820 and was a former sign painter. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Boulevard Christian Church and Masonic Temple Lodge 299.

His survivors include his wife, Wilma Appleberry of the home; one son, Robert M. Appleberry, Independence; two grandchildren, Susan Widick and Robert Appleberry; and one great-granddaughter, Abbey Widick.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m.

DONNA R. BYRD

Donna R. Jewett Byrd, 49, Independence, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Byrd was born March 5, 1949, in Butler, Mo. She was a sales clerk for Sears & Roebuck.

Her survivors include two daughters, Diana M. Byrd and Denise L. Byrd, both of Independence; one son, Daniel S. Jewett, Kansas City; two sisters, Sue A. Sullivan, Buckner, and Linda N. McChan, Independence; two brothers, William F. Jewett Sr. and Donald W. Jewett, both of Kansas City; and three grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

BETTY J. COTTEN

Betty Jo Cotten, 66, Weatherby Lake, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at St. Luke`s Northland Hospital.

Ms. Cotten was born May 1, 1932, in St. Joseph, Mo. She was a marketing and sales manager for Sheffield and Armco Steel, retiring after 30 years of service.

Her survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Pamela Jo

Winkler, Kansas City, and Laurie Beth and Trey Nelson, Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Frances Stansbury, Springfield, Mo., and Patty Fleming, Kearney, Mo.; three brothers, Kenneth Fleming, Kearney, Jack Fleming, Marina Del Ray, Calif., and Dr. Lawrence Fleming, Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Beth Winkler and Patrick Daniel Winkler.

Memorial services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

JAMES C. "JIM" FORBES

James Carl "Jim" Forbes, 68, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Forbes was born Feb. 5, 1930, in Independence. He formerly owned Custom Restoration in Westport, and had been vice president of the 911 Center and the Mid-America Distribution Center. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and was a former regional vice president of the Easter Seals Society. He served as president of the Citizen Crusade Against Crime S.P.D., and was a member of the Missouri and National Crime Prevention associations. He was a lifelong supporter of the Kansas City Police Department, where he received numerous commendations from Bomb and Arson, Tactical, C.S.I., Canine, and the Police Academy. He was awarded the Missouri Crime Prevention Volunteer of the Year in 1997, and was a Navy veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Phyllis Forbes of the home; four sons, Michael Forbes, Carl Forbes and Robert Forbes, all of Mission, Kan., and Steven Forbes, Gravois Mills, Mo.; one daughter, Jacanna Maloney, Ventura, Calif.; three sisters, Helen Beck, Frances Herald and Annabelle Wrigley, all of Independence; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the All Saints Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mount Moriah & Freeman Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the church or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Robien was born in Pierce City, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two husbands and one son.

Her survivors include two sons, Robert Johnson, Kerrville, Texas, and Raymond Johnson, Green Valley, Ariz.; two sisters, Blanche Parker, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Emma Orr, Cherryvale, Kan.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
