MARGARET HEALD

Margaret Heald, 79, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Heald was born June 23, 1919, in Kearney, Neb. She had lived in Tucson, Ariz., for many years until moving to this area in 1972. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had attended the Kentucky Hills Congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Heald in 1961.

Her survivors include her children, Robert Heald, Independence, Bartlett Heald, Merced, Calif., and Barbara Beal, Blue Springs; three brothers, Leonard Hartman, Kansas City, Lyle Hartman, Tucson, and Virgil Edward Hartman, Palm Springs, Calif.; a sister, Catherine Blasewitz, Mill Creek, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Midtown Chapel in Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

NORMA I. HOVATTER

Norma Irene Hovatter, 93, Lee's Summit, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at the Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mrs. Hovatter was born Feb. 20, 1905, in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in Bethany, Mo., and Joplin, Mo., before moving to Lee's Summit in 1977. She had been a high school English teacher in Bethany for 20 years and in Bethany for 23 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Her survivors include several cousins.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesdayat the St. Joseph (Mo.) Memorial Park cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence.

FREDDIE J. STEEN

Freddie Joyce Steen, 65, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at the Lifecare Center of Grandview.

Mrs. Steen was born in Kansas City. She retired in 1967 after 17 years as a pharmaceutical buyer for McKesson-Robbins. She was a Baptist.

Her survivors include her husband, Robert L. Steen of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin Lea and John Crick, Independence, and Rayna Collen and John Melvin, Blue Springs; and an aunt, Bertie Elder, Gladstone, Mo.

Graveside services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Muehlebach Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Chapter, 3846 West 75th St., Prairie Village, Kan.

BRIAN N. THOMPSON

Brian Neal Thompson, 30, Oak Grove, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998.

Mr. Thompson was born July 22, 1968, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong Oak Grove resident. He worked as a steel shop foreman for Luffland Industries.

His survivors include his father and mother, Charles and Betty Thompson of the home; a grandfather, Charles Allen, Buckner; a son, David Scott Thompson, Beardsley, Minn.; his companion, Patty Knowles, and children, Nicki, Bo and Luke, all of the home; a brother, Mark Thompson, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; and a nephew, Mark Thompson II; and two nieces, Nicole Thompson and Heather Thompson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Home, 300 Adams, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery.

KARL HOUSE

Karl House, 81, Buckner, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at his home.

Mr. House was born May 27, 1917, in Arroll, Mo., and had lived in this area for 56 years. He was an accountant for the Civil Service for 32 years. He served as a Sexton for Buckner Hill cemetery for several years, was active with the Senior Citizens Center of Buckner, was a member of the Buckner Lions Club and the Osage American Association of Retired Persons, and was a retired secretary/treasurer of the Buckner United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His son, Lloyd Edward House, died in 1985.

His survivors include his wife, Esther E. House of the home; a daughter, Linda Joyce Brooks, Colorado Springs; a brother, Donald Lee House, Lee's Summit; two sisters, Anna M. Sturgeon, Santa Maria, Calif., and Betty M. Wofford, Hesperia, Calif.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Kansas City Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

MARY N. McLAUGHLIN

Mary Norene McLaughlin, 84, Kansas City, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. McLaughlin was born in Bates County, Mo. She had been a bookkeeper for McLaughlin Plumbing Co. She had been a member of the Eastgate Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star for 49 years, and was a member of the White Avenue United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. McLaughlin in 1987, and a daughter, June Emery in 1961.

Her survivors include a daughter, Phyllis J. Edwards of the home; a son, Martin Hillebrand, Mancos, Colo.; a sister, Katy Gough, Harrisonville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

MILTON M. TAYLOR

Milton M. Taylor, 76, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at the Rosewood Nursing Center.

Mr. Taylor was born May 4, 1922, in Independence, Kan., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a forklift operator for Allis-Chalmers before he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Children's Memorial Lutheran Church, and a former member of the American Legion of Independence.

His survivors include his wife, Margaret Joyce Taylor of the home; a son, Dennis L. Taylor, North Kansas City; two daughters, Deborah J. Taylor, Kansas City, and Pamela S. Williams, Independence; two sisters, Donna Taylor and Doris Taylor, both of Harrisonville, Mo.; and three grandsons, Shane, Joshua and Gunnar Williams.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, 5001 Independence Ave. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City.

Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Park Lawn Funeral Home.

FRANCES E. HANAN

Frances E. Hanan, 74, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Truman Medical Center.

Mrs. Hanan was born April 3, 1924, in Kansas City. She was an office helper at Lake City Arsenal for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Hanan, in 1964.

Her survivors include two daughters, Jean Baker, Buckner, and Anita Richardson, Fort Wayne, Ind.; one sister, Betty Johnson, Kansas City; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kan. 66212.

JOHN L. EVANS

John L. Evans, 50, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Evans was born Aug. 30, 1948, in Brownwood, Texas. He was president of Patterson Oil Co., Lee`s Summit. He was a member of the Southwest Baptist College Alumni Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs.

His survivors include his wife, Yvonne Evans of the home; his mother, Eva Marie Evans, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Jim Evans, Blue Springs; two sisters, Janice Patterson, Adrian, Mo., and Ruth Rice, Kansas City; nine nieces and nephews and three great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist College Scholarship Fund or to the Greater Blue Springs Community Foundation, in care of the One Room Schoolhouse, Anna Margaret McGuire, 1801 W. Vesper, Blue Springs, Mo. 64015.

KATHLEEN M. ESSER

Kathleen M. Esser, Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999.

Mrs. Esser formerly worked for The Examiner and St. Mary`s Catholic Church. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church for many years, and in earlier years, she did volunteer work at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter J. Esser, former publisher of The Examiner, and a grandson, Paul T. Apprill.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Paul Apprill, Overland Park, and Margie and Greg Jecker, Stilwell, Kan.; one son and daughter-in-law, Pete Esser III, and his wife, Kathy, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Don Anderson, Phoenix, Ariz.

Services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church, immediately followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Entombment will be in the Mount Olivet Mausoleum, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Kansas City Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

Robert Spalding Farnham

Robert Spalding Farnham, 90, of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998.

He was born May 4, 1907, in Waterloo, Iowa. He first moved to Independence with his family in 1958, returning again in 1971.

He was married June 8, 1927, to Myrtle Gail Burnett.

Mr. Spalding was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1927. He was called into the priesthood as a deacon in 1932, and called to be a priest in 1936. In 1937, he was ordained a High Priest and Counselor to the Stake President, a position he held until 1944. He was also pastor of the First Church Congregation, St. Joseph.

While serving as a priest, Mr. Farnham continued to operate a successful service station, Bob`s Standard Oil, in St. Joseph.

He became the chaplain of the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital in 1958. He was the founder of the Volunteer Chaplain Service, which continues today.

In 1965, he was called to the St. Louis District of the church to prepare it to become a Stake. He was called to be a Patriarch in 1970, and returned to Independence in 1971. He retired in 1972. He was preceded in death by a son and a daughter.

He is survived by his wife, M. Gail Farnham, of the home; one son, Milo M. Farnham of Independence; one daughter, Roxana G. DeSelms of Independence; a sister, Helen Valentine, Walpole, Mass.; nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Friends may call from noon until the service begins. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, St. Joseph. Contributions may be made to the Center Place Restoration School.

BRUCE H. CORN

Bruce Henry Corn, 84, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Corn was born Dec. 5, 1913, in Sni Mills, south of Oak Grove, and he was a area resident for more than 80 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater from New Guinea to Manila. He was a life member of the Oak Grove American Legion Post 379 and VFW. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Davijean Corn of the home; a son, Ronald B. Corn, Overland Park, Kan.; a brother, Ray Corn, Lee`s Summit; and two sisters, Nadine Reiss and Lodemia Morris, both of Oak Grove.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the Royer Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Care, 201 W. R.D.Mize Road, Blue Springs, Mo. 64014, or to the United Methodist Church, Oak Grove.

AARON J. HARPER

Aaron J. Harper, 23, Independence, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998.

Mr. Harper was born May 20, 1974, in Kansas City. He was a construction worker.

His survivors include his mother and father, Patty and James Harper of the home; his wife, Katherine, Carthage, Mo.; a brother, Dyon Harper, Independence; a sister, Raquel R. Harper, Clovis, Calif.; his grandfather, Hershel Harper, Webb City, Mo.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Charter Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens, Independence. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at the chapel.

PAUL KELLEY

Paul Kelley, 85, Lee`s Summit, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Kelley was born July 1, 1912, in Goreville, Ill. He was a dairy farmer all his life and he was a bus driver for the Blue Springs School District for more than 20 years, retiring in 1977. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Kelley, on Jan. 1, 1990.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions be sent to the Arthritis Foundation.

BERTHA M. MOORE

Bertha M. Moore, 92, Independence, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

She was born Nov. 12, 1905, in Independence. She retired from the Co-Op Store in Atherton. She was a member of the Atherton RLDS Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Her survivors include two sisters, Mary L. Moore and Lenora E. Beebe, both of the home; two brothers, Charles Moore, Independence, and Fred Moore, Buckner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.
