EULIA A. GAST

Eulia Ann Gast, 82, Taylorsville, Ky., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Taylorsville Health Care.

Mrs. Gast was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Ottawa, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Gast in 1968.

Her survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, George E. and Connie Gast, Odessa, Gerald L. and Mary Gast, Blue Springs, and Thomas D. and Denise Gast, Oak Grove; a daughter and son-in-law, Georgia A. and Clem Koprowski, Taylorsville; four brothers, Donald Shulufas, Harrisonville, Mo., Robert Shulufas, Oklahoma, and Richard and James Shulufas, California; three sisters, Catherine Reddick, Muskegon, Mich., Dorothy Warr, Independence, and Jean Patterson, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at McGilley Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. at the chapel.

GERTRUDE G. MYERS

Gertrude Gwinn Myers, 92, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Myers, a lifelong resident of Blue Springs, had been a member of the First Christian Church since 1917. She belonged to the Blue Springs Historical Society and was a past member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She worked 25 years for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1971. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Virginia Myers Ellis.

Her survivors include two granddaughters, Vicki Ellis, Canyon Lake, Texas, and Joann Ellis, Houston.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the Blue Springs Historical Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Webb-Freer Funeral Home.

ANNIE B. POINDEXTER

Annie Byrl Poindexter, 84, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Poindexter was born near Plattsburg, Mo., and lived in Liberty, Mo., and Kansas City before moving to Independence. She was a registered medical technologist, working in her 50 plus career for St. Mary`s Hospital, numerous doctor`s offices, including Drs. Luke J. Dlabal Sr. and S.J. Kranson, then for the last 25 years at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, retiring in 1974. She was a certified M.T. (ASCP) and M.T. (ASCP) 3757, and was double registered in medical technology and X-ray. She founded a simple test for sickle-cell anemia, devised a way to determine blood loss in surgery, and started the blood banks at several hospitals, including Independence Regional. Her husband of 53 years, Clyde J. Poindexter, died in 1994. Her survivors include two daughters, Margaret L. Parker and Patricia A. England, both of Independence; two sons, Donald L. Poindexter, Blue Springs, and Michael G. Poindexter, Lee`s Summit; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to St. Ann`s Catholic Church.

CARL W. VUN CANNON SR.

Carl W. Vun Cannon Sr., 88, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Vun Cannon was born Sept. 13, 1909, in Randleman, N.C., and lived in Flint, Mich., before moving to Independence 21 years ago. He was a skilled tool grinder for General Motors for 47 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Blue Springs Restoration Branch Church. His wife, Stella Vun Cannon, died in 1997.

His survivors include three sons, Carl W. Vun Cannon Jr., Independence, Michael D. Vun Cannon, Wichita, Kan., and Thomas H. McKinney, Pebble Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Phillis Bailey, Odessa; two brothers, Jesse Vun Cannon, Independence, and Walter Gardner, Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Mary Wheeler, Miami Shores, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Private entombment will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

BETTIE L. BEATTY

Bettie Lou Beatty, 70, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Beatty was born Oct. 12, 1927, and lived in Joplin, Mo., before residing in Independence most of her adult life. She was a presser for Dobson Cleaners in Independence, and was a member of the Baptist faith. Her husband, Bill Beatty Jr., died in 1963.

Her survivors include two sons, George Hagerman, Grandview, and Jim K. Beatty, Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Cassandra Banks, Tacoma, Wash., and Linda Hupman, Benton, La.; a sister, Dela Ruth King, Joplin; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services are pending in Joplin; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of New Salem Funeral Home.

LOUIS F. MORGAN

LouisF. Morgan, 89, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Morgan was born Sept. 9, 1908, in Independence and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a pressman for Herald House from 1953 to 1973. He previously worked for General Motors and the Art Iron Works Co. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward. He was preceded in death by a son, Louis M. Morgan.

His survivors include his wife, Melba Morgan of the home; two grandchildren, Mark Morgan, Luttrell, Tenn., and Kathy Morgan, Germantown, Ohio; a great-grandson, Mark Morgan, Luttrell; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

REEVEL P. PIPER

Reevel P. Piper, 95, Bethany, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Bethany Hospital.

Mrs. Piper was born Dec. 21, 1902, in Brighton, Mo., and lived in Independence and Gallatin, Mo., before moving to Bethany in 1993. She was a member of the Independence Assembly 150 Social Order of the Beauceant and its Past Presidents Club for 50 years. She was also a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence and the 144 Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Independence. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Christie M. Waldridge in 1939, and Lindsay M. Piper in 1975.

Her survivors include a daughter, Darlene Heldenbrand, Coffey, Mo.; a stepson, Robert Piper, Independence; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be at 7 tonight at the Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to Shriner`s Hospital.

Annie Byrl Poindexter, 84, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

GILBERT L. STRANGE

Gilbert LeRoy Strange, 66, Independence, died Monday, Feb.23, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Strange was born Jan.14, 1932, in Kansas City, lived in the Greater Kansas City area most of his life, and moved to Independence in 1981. He worked in the maintenance department at the General Motors Leeds Assembly Plant for 30 years, retiring in 1985, and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 93. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

His survivors include two sons, Roy Joe Strange, Gladstone, Mo., and Doug Strange, Kansas City; three daughters, Marcella Goslee, Skidmore, Mo., and Nancy Jackson and Judith Strange, both of Kansas City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Cremation, with inurnment at Leavenworth National cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

CARL W. VUN CANNON SR.

Carl W. Vun Cannon Sr., 88, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

VIOLA M. WOOD

Viola May Wood, 77, Kansas City, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center.

Mrs. Wood was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Fortesque, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a member of the Blue Ridge RLDS congregation, and attended Unity Village Chapel. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Earle Wood.

Her survivors include two sons, Vernon D. Wood, Mineral Point, Mo., and Gerald W. Wood, Warrensburg, Mo.; a daughter, Sherry M. White, Lee`s Summit; two brothers, Earl Lochman, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Gene Dutton, Independence; a sister, Gladys Farnsworth, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Entombment will be in Garden of the Crosses Mausoleum, Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

THERESA M. NASH

Theresa M. Nash, 65, St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Nash was born April 19, 1933, in Kansas City, and had lived in the St. Joseph area most of her life. She was a homemaker and attended the Sparta United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Nash.

Her survivors include her husband, George Nash of the home; three sons, David Nash and John Nash, both of St. Joseph, and Mark Nash, Independence; one daughter, Margaret Ann Young, St. Joseph; one brother, Keith Hunter, Kansas City; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, St. Joseph. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

RAYMOND RITTMASTER

Raymond Rittmaster, 83, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Rittmaster was a lifelong area resident. He owned Ritt's

Drive-in at U.S. 40 and Crysler for many years and later was with Mid-America Cinema Corp. for 15 years. He retired in 1989. He served with the U.S. Army in central Europe during World War II.

His survivors include his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth (Ellen) Rittmaster of Independence; two sons, Louis Rittmaster, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and David Rittmaster, Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Vern Means, Blue Springs; three sisters, Blanche Marks, Kansas City, Yetta Spiegel, Overland Park, Kan., and Frances Gross, Leawood, Kan.; a brother, Ben Rittmaster, Camarillo, Calif.; grandchildren, Libby and Hugo Valiente, Daniel and Annette Rittmaster, Michael and Jennifer Means and Aaron Means; and a great-grandson, Cesar David Valiente.

Graveside services were today at Mount Carmel cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Diabetes Association or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Louis Memorial Chapel, Kansas City.

LOWELL "BUDDY" J. SAWYER

Lowell "Buddy" James Sawyer, 39, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in a Jefferson City hospital.

Mr. Sawyer was born May 2, 1959, in Houston, Mo., and had moved to Belle, Mo., with his family in 1991. He had a car dealership and auto sales establishment south of Belle. His survivors include his wife, Sophie, two sons, Tommy and Christopher, and two daughters, Julie and Laura, all of the home; his parents, Audrey S. Sawyer and Barbara Hubbard; a brother, Dudley Sawyer, Nevada, Mo.; two sisters, Connie Sommers, Nevada, and Cheryl Hippler, New Orleans, La.; and a half sister, Charlotte Sisco, Duenweg, Mo.

Services were today at the First Christian Church in Belle. Interment was in the Liberty cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Sassmann's Funeral Home, Belle.

HARRIETTE O. FROST

Harriette Olive Frost, 69, Odessa, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City.

Ms. Frost was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Odessa, and resided in Odessa until 1949 when she moved to Glenview, Ill. area, for a teaching career of 34 years. She returned to Odessa in 1990. She was a 1946 graduate of the Odessa High School. She earned a bachelor`s degree in education from Blackburn College, Carlinville, Ill., and a master`s degree at Colorado State College, Greeley, in 1963. She taught school from 1954-1988 including teaching fourth graders for three years at Lanark, Ill.; 31 years at Wilmette, Ill. as a fourth grade teacher in Avoca School and then to Library Reading Supervisor at Marie Murphy Junior High School. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Odessa. She was a member of the Christian Women`s Fellowship of the church, and past Grand Noble of the Rebekah Lodge. She was a 28-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and a member of the International Teachers Sorority for Key Women Teachers, Friends of the Library, Odessa; and Lafayette County Historical Society.

Her survivors include cousins, Dorothy Ferm, Kansas City, Mildred Summers, Lee`s Summit, Carl E. Webb, Joplin, Mo., and Dorthea Ferguson, Butler, Mo.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, Odessa. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church or to The Edna Mae Whitsitt Odessa Rotary Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home.

ROBERT G. LaRUE

Robert Gerald LaRue, 74, Kaneohe, Hawaii, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Queens Hospital in Honolulu.

Mr. LaRue retired from the military at Hickman Air Force Base in Honolulu. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gael.

His survivors include his wife, Mildred; stepdaughter, Cheyene; two daughters, Pat and Michelle; two sisters, Geraldine J. LaRue, Lowry City, Mo., and Rena Frances Robbins, Blue Springs; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Cremation. Arrangements were under the direction of the Luana Mortuary.
