PEARL L. SEARLE

Pearl L. Searle, 76, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Searle was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Independence, and was raised in the Atherton area. She was retired from J.C. Penney. Her husband, John R.Searle, died in 1982.

Her survivors include a son, Charles K. "Pete" Chappelow, Olathe, Kan.; a daughter, Carole "Sue" Wilson, Independence; a brother, Jimmy E. Curtis, Bloomington, Ind.; three sisters, Pauline Dike, Ellettsville, Ind., Bettie Handley, Clinton, N.Y., and Lynne Mullen, Blue Springs; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the New Salem Funeral Home. Cremation with private burial at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Sunshine Center, 607 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Mo. 64050.

DONALD E. SPEASE

Donald E. Spease, 85, Plattsburg, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at St. Luke`s Northland, Smithville, Mo.

Mr. Spease was born April 25, 1912, in Lancaster, Wis., and lived in the Independence and Kansas City areas before movingto Grayson, Mo., in 1955. He moved to Gower, Mo., in 1961, and to Plattsburg in 1993. He was an independent truck driver all of his life, and a member of the Trimble (Mo.) RLDS congregation. His wife, Mary R. Alliet Spease, died in 1996.

His survivors include three sons, Donald Spease, Independence, and Willard Spease and Charles Spease, both of Plattsburg; four brothers, Carson Spease, Wendell Spease and LaVerne Spease, all of Independence, and Clifford Spease, Courtside, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Plattsburg. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

EVERETT L. KELLER

Everett Leigh Keller, infant son of Eric and Cindi Keller of Independence, died on the day of his birth, Thursday, March 18, 1998, at Truman Medical Center-West.

Everett Leigh is also survived by two sisters, Erica Betty Jo and Kayla Dawn, also of the home; his maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Ray and Joan Miller, Independence; his maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Peg and Don Whelchel, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; his paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Stuart and Donna Keller, Kansas City; and his paternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Debbie and Vince Morrissey, Kansas City.

Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel.

WILLIAM O. LANGTON

William O. Langton, 86, Independence, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Langton was born Feb. 29, 1912, in West Webster, N.Y., and had lived in Independence for most of his life. He was a welder for 36 years for Ford Motor Claycomo Plant, retiring in 1967. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local 249. He was a member of the Fairmount United Methodist Church, Independence. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada Emily Langton in 1985.

He is survived by a daughter, Eva M. Dye, Ballwin, Mo.; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Fairmount United Methodist Church Children`s` Fund, 2119 Holke Road, Independence, Mo. 64057.

E. MERLE LARSEN

E. Merle Martin Larsen, 74, Independence, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Larsen was born March 31, 1923, in Salem, Ark. She was owner of the Cafe at 47th Street and Raytown Road for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William P. Martin in 1972, and by her second husband, Myles A. Larsen in 1981.

Her survivors include a son, Bill T. Martin, Harrisonville, Mo.; two brothers, Norman Goodwin, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Perry Goodwin, Little Rock, Ark.; two grandsons, Jerry Martin, Independence, and Jeff Martin, Raytown; a granddaughter, Jackie Martin, Independence; two stepgranddaughters, Donna Hoover, Liberty, Mo., Diana Thornhill, Independence; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Sheil Colonial Funeral Home. Burial will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Salem (Ark.) cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the children`s unit of the Ararat Shrine.

JULIA M. CARTER

Julia May Carter, 91, Independence, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Carter was born Sept. 13, 1907, in Independence and had lived on the family homestead on East U.S. 24 until 10 years ago. She was a clerk for the Jackson County Courthouse for 14 years, retiring in 1963. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, the Knife and Fork Club and the Salvation Army, and a charter member of the Northeast Morning Extension Club. She was the granddaughter of the late M.W. Anderson, a native of the county who was an early county official, landowner and stockman, who had owned the Glendale herd of shorthorn cattle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Raymond Carter, and a great-granddaughter, Julie Douglas.

Her survivors include a granddaughter, Joyce Driskell of Independence; three great-grandsons; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to The Salvation Army.

TERESA M. CHAFFEE

Teresa M. Chaffee, 83, Raytown, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Chaffee was born Feb. 27, 1916, in Kansas City.

Her survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles L. Chaffee Jr., Raytown, and Donald and Patricia Chaffee, Independence; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Jack Williams, Kansas City; grandchildren, Sandra Bowlus, Raytown, and Sheryl Riley, Kristine Ogan, David Chaffee and Charles M. Chaffee, all of Independence; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Hinton-Gibson Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

MABLE F. EASON

Mable Florence Eason, 99, Independence, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Eason was born Dec. 10, 1900, in Chillicothe, Mo. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence. Her husband, Leonard Eason, died in 1989.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Charles Ross, Overland Park, Kan.; one sister, Dorothy Jacobs, Northeast Kansas City; grandchildren, John Ross, and his wife, Lisa of Merriam, Kan., Sue Ross, Merriam, and Joyce Ross, Roeland Park, Kan.; and one great-granddaughter, Caley Ross.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at the chapel.

JOHN G. SCHOPF

John G. Schopf, 51, Independence, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mr. Schopf was born Dec. 22, 1947, in Joplin, Mo. He was a 15 year veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his father, John R. Schopf in 1978.

His survivors include three daughters, Christy Byers, Kansas City, and Katie Schopf and Samantha Schopf, both of Independence; one son, Matt Schopf, and his mother, Mary Sue Schopf, both of Independence; and four grandchildren

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

ELMER E. OLSON

Elmer E. Olson, 79, Independence, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Regency Care Center in Independence.

Mr. Olson was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Silverton, Ore., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was the owner/operator of Olson Plumbing for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Gudgell Park RLDS congregation, KC Flyers Club and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Olson in 1997.

His survivors include his wife, Mardell Olson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Al West, Holden, Mo., and Twyla Olson-Hahn and Michael Hahn, Independence; one brother, Ole V. Olson, Independence; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Gudgell Park RLDS Church Memorial Fund, 500 E. Gudgell, Independence, Mo. 64055.

JOSEPH W. FRENCH SR.

Joseh W. French Sr. of Garland, Texas, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Garland, Texas.

Mr. French was born July 10, 1919, in Independence. He was a senior design engineer for the Oilwell Supply Division of the U.S. Steel Co. for 36 years. He was on the board of directors of the Southwest Water Color Society and a charter member of Garland Sam's Travel Club. He was a submariner for the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was very active as a Boy Scout leader.

His survivors include his wife, Lois E. French, Garland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard C. and Janet French, Plano, Texas, Chuck and Mary Lu French, Garland, and Joseph W. French Jr. and Colleen, Dallas; one sister, Mrs. Robert Brown, San Diego, Calif.; three grandsons, Bobby, Grant and Joel French; and one great-granddaughter, Erin French.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the St. James Episcopal Church, Dallas. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the Restland Funeral Home, Dallas. The family suggests contributions to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsey, Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, Md. 21208, or the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 282, 409 N. Liberty St., Independence, Mo. 64052.

ELMER S. PEARSON

Elmer St. Clair Pearson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Havasu Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Pearson was born Jan. 27, 1916, in Kansas City, moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1954, and to Lake Havasu in 1979. He worked for the city of Tucson, retiring after 21 years in the electric department.

His survivors include his wife, Grace Pearson of the home; one son, Michael Pearson, Sheridan, Ore.; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and David McClain, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; four grandchildren, Sarah Bensen, John Pearson, Shannon Baker and Timothy McClain; and six great-grandchildren, Anna, Clara, David, Constance and Naomi Bensen, and Nathaneal Pearson.

Services and burial will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Memorial services will be held at Calvary Church in Lake Havasu City at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church building fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home, Lake Havasu City.

JOSEPH VASKO

Joseph Vasko, 79, Buckner, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Vasko was born May 16, 1919, in Porter, Ala., and had lived in Buckner for approximately six years. He worked for Interstate Brands for more than 30 years, retiring in 1975. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Oma Vasko of the home; four sons, Ken Vasko, Oak Grove, Donald Vasko, Dayton, Ky., Gary Vasko, Battlefield, Mo., and Charles Vasko, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

FORREST A. WILSON

Forrest A. Wilson, 77, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Wilson was born April 27, 1921, in Independence, and lived in Buckner for 12 years before moving to Independence. He worked in the maintenance department for the Independence School District, retiring in 1986, and for the Campbell Oil Co. on Missouri 291 until 1997. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe in the 100th Evacuation Hospital, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000. He was also a member of the Atherton Restoration Branch.

His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doreen Wilson of the home; three children and their spouses, Isabella and Jim Smith and Fred and Susie Wilson of Independence, and Elizabeth and Skip Farmer, Great Falls, Mont.; one brother, Dale Wilson, Montreal, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cremation; memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice, 1625 W. 92nd St., Kansas City, Mo. 64114.

BILLIE J. DOBYNS

Billie June Dobyns, 68, Las Vegas, Nev., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Columbia Sunrise Hospital.

Mrs. Dobyns was born June 10, 1930, in West Franfort, Ill. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Beyer.

Her survivors include her husband, Richard L. Dobyns, Las Vegas; a daughter, Vickie L. Buzek, Las Vegas; a son, David L. Dobyns, St. Peters, Mo.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the church.

JAMES I. "JIM" KEAL

James I. "Jim" Keal, 72, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Keal was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a Navy veteran of World War II. In 1960, he founded and owned Jim Keal Insurance Agency Inc. in Independence. He had served on the board of directors of Independent Insurance Agents of Missouri, was past president of Suburban Jackson County Independent Insurance Agents, was a member of the Society of Certified Insurance Counsellors, and a member and past membership committee chairman of the Independence Chamber of Commerce.

His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Janice Keal of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Fran Keal, and Jeff and Laura Keal, all of Blue Springs; one sister, Velma Jones, Florida; and four grandchildren, Rachel, Trent, Taylor and Curtis.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
