ADA MARIE E. SMITH
Ada Marie Ellis Smith, 89, Independence, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Smith was born July 23, 1908, in Boyne City, Mich., and had lived in Florida before moving to Independence 10 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Ellis in 1985.
Her survivors include two sons, Bruce B. Ellis, Sun City, Ariz., and Paul E. Ellis, Englewood, Fla.; a stepson, Robert Smith, Lowell, Mich.; two brothers, Howard Lalone, Ferndale, Mich., and Floyd Lalone, Alto, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel.
NICKI CASTEEL SNORGRASS
Nicki May Snorgrass, 51, Olathe, Kan., died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at her home.Mrs. Snorgrass was born Oct. 9, 1946, in Independence. She worked for Sears Roebuck and Co., in the law offices for 13 years. She was a member of the Johnson County Board of Realtors, the Heartland MLS, a broker/owner of Somerset Realtors in Olathe and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She received an associate`s degree from Johnson County Community College.
Her survivors include her husband, Jack Snorgrass; a daughter, Catherine Lozano, Ridgefield Park, N.J.; her mother, Dorothy Casteel, Independence; and two brothers, Gerald W. Casteel, Albuquerque, N.M., and Duane O. Casteel, Grain Valley.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Johnson County Chapel. Inurnment will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Olathe. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kendallwood Hospice, 10015 N. WILBERT N. BAKER
Wilbert Nelson Baker, 85, Independence, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, in North Fort Myers, Fla.
Mr. Baker was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Fargo, N.D. He was owner/operator of Baker Flying Service at the downtown airport in Kansas City, until retiring in 1972. He had been a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was one of the founding members of the Independence Flying Club and OX5 Club Aviation Pioneers. He had been a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by a son, James N. Baker in 1997.
His survivors include his wife, Ida Mae Baldus Baker of the home; a daughter, Martha Murawski, St. Charles, Mo.; a brother, Arthur Baker, Centerview, Mo.; a sister, Betty Williams, Raytown; and four grandchildren, Deborah Winner, Steven Murawski, Christopher N. Baker and Mark William Baker, Independence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Diabetes Research Institute, 3440 Hollywood Blvd., Suite 100, Hollywood, Fla. 33021.
LAVERNE W. KELLY
Laverne Worrell Kelly, 88, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at the Blue River Care Center.
Mrs. Kelly was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Higginsville, Mo. She retired from the Kansas City Water Department. She was a member of Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church.
Her survivors include a son, Bill Worrell, Kansas City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Carson Funeral Home, Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Machpelah cemetery, Lexington, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
STANLEY E. PARSONS
Stanley Earle Parsons, 76, Raytown, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Parsons was born in Gloucester, Maine, and had lived in Riverside, Calif., before moving to this area in 1970. He had
served in the U.S. Air Force from 1938 until his retirement in 1959. During his career he had earned several awards and honors, including American Defense with Foreign Service Clasp, American Theatre Ribbon, European Theatre Ribbon, The Asiatic-Pacific Theatre with two stars, the Good Conduct with three loops, and the Victory World War II Ribbon. He had attended the Adjutant Generals School in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and had served during World War II and the Korean War. He also retired from the Independence Police Department where he was instrumental in the reorganization of the property room. He was a member of the VFW Post 3976 and the American Legion Post 340, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.
His survivors include two daughters, Shirley Parsons of the home, and Barbara Jean Murkle, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
MONETTA T. POTTER
Monetta T. Potter, 87, Independence, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Potter was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Independence, and was a lifelong resident of Independence. She had been a sales clerk for Betts Jewelry for 20 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Women`s Civic Club of Independence. She was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Potter in 1960.
Her survivors include an aunt, Flora Luther, Independence; and 10 cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
S. BERNIECE POWELL
Stella Berniece Wendel Powell, 78, Grain Valley, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Mariner Health of Olathe, Kan.
Mrs. Powell was born in Kansas City and had lived in Grain Valley for the past 54 years. She had worked at Lake City Arsenal and at Black, Sivalls & Bryson before retiring in the 1970s. She was a member of the Grain Valley Christian Church and the Blue Springs Chapter 428 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gordon Powell on June 27, 1995.
Her survivors include a daughter, Orita Kirkman, Olathe; four granddaughters, Debbie Barnes, Lois R. Kirkman, Dawn Kirkman and
Elizabeth Kirkman; two grandsons, Paul Hunt and Neal Jeffers; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Buckner cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Heart Surgery Fund for Needy Children, in care of Children`s Mercy Hospital, 23rd and Gillham, Kansas City, Mo.
GERALDINE L. SYKES
Geraldine Louise Sykes, 56, Kansas City, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Sykes was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Kansas City. She was a member of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri. She attended the New Walnut and Peace Chapel of the RLDS Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Roland Sykes of the home; a son, Gregory Sykes, Kansas City; a sister, Connie Zuber, Warsaw, Mo.; her mother, Thelma Kester, Independence; and a granddaughter, Sidney Sykes.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Midtown Chapel.
DELLA M. BLASCO (DRAKE)
Della May Blasco (Drake), 71, Independence, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Blasco was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 846 Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary 0370, both in Overland Park, Kan., and Fraternal Order of Eagles 3717 Auxiliary in Sugar Creek.
Her survivors include a daughter, Carole Blasco Cooper, Newborn, Ga.; a sister, Catherine McPherson, Cottage Grove, Mo.; a half brother, James George; two grandchildren, Brian Patrick Cooper and James Franklin Cooper, both of Newborn; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Kansas City Funeral Directors, Kansas City, Kan., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. NANCY B. CRABTREE
Nancy Crabtree, 68, Independence, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Crabtree was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Topeka, Kan. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Bible Church and the Gideon Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Research Medical Center from 1979 to 1990.
Her survivors include her husband, Don Crabtree of the home; four sons, Phillip Crabtree, Lake Winnebago, Mo., Paul Crabtree, Kansas City, Mark Crabtree, Springfield, Mo., and Matthew Crabtree, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, 8524 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the Gideon Memorial Bible Fund.
EDITH M. LYLE
Edith Margaret Dayton Lyle, 74, Independence, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Lyle was born June 17, 1923, in Urich, Mo., and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a retired legal secretary.
Her survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Lyle, Independence; a daughter, Nancy LeAnne Price, Medford, Ore.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Robert and Linda Susan (Knipp) Lyle, Republic, Mo.; a brother, Robert Donald Dayton, Kimberling City, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Todd Michael Lyle, Eric Robert Lyle and Dustin Lee Lyle.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Urich cemetery. JESSE A. OSOWSKI
Jesse Austin Osowski, infant son of Ed and Debbie Osowski of Independence, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
His survivors also include his paternal grandparents, Chester and Ella Osowski, and maternal grandparents, Jim and Janice Cottrell, and Robert and Barbara Lane, all of Independence; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Wiercinski, Kansas City; and his maternal great-grandmother, Nellie Poole, Odessa.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
FLORENCE M. SWIHART
Florence M. Swihart, 90, Independence, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Maywood Terrace Nursing Home.
Mrs. Swihart was born Sept. 17, 1907, in Atchison, Kan., and was a lifelong area resident. She had been a clerk at J.C. Penney`s, and was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Swihart, and a son, Ralph Swihart Jr.
Her survivors include two sons, Gene Swihart and Donald Swihart, and two sisters, Gladys Caviness and Edna May Stark, all of Independence; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
RICHARD F. BURNS JR.
Richard Fred Burns Jr., 30, Independence, died Monday, March 8, 1999. Mr. Burns was born Aug. 9, 1968, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a 1986 graduate of Fort Osage High School and a member of the Blue Springs Fitness Club and the Village Heights RLDS congregation. His survivors include his wife, Cheri Burns, one son, Richard Fred Burns III, and his parents, Fred and Sharon Burns, all of the home; his grandmother, Clarice Yost, Holden, Mo.; one brother, Sean Burns, Independence; one sister, Melissa Burns of the home; and an aunt, Sandy Salley, Independence. Ernie Cruickshank, 86, Cameron, Mo., died Monday, March 8, 1999, north of Cameron. His survivors include his wife, Twyla Cruickshank of the home; one son, Lonnie Cruickshank, Taipi, Tawain; two daughters, Elaine Mauzey, Denver, and Alice Cruickshank, Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, Frank Cruickshank, Turney, Mo., and Curtis Haslee and Leland Haslee, both of Englewood, Colo.; two sisters, Eva Neal, Orlando, Fla., and Ethel Martin, Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Bernice Peckenpaugh Jelley, 85, Paris, Mo., died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor of Blue Springs. Mrs. Jelley was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Tabor, Iowa, and lived in Paris until moving to Blue Springs in 1996. She was a graduate of Paris High School, and a member of the Paris Presbyterian Church, PEO and Chapter Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon C. Jelley on Dec. 7, 1969, and a son, Vernon Lee Jelley on Aug. 20, 1949. Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. V. Carl and Betsy Jelley, Blue Springs; and one granddaughter, Cantrell Jelley of Blue Springs, currently attending college at Tulsa University. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Marywood Page, 92, Slater, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the Big Bend Retreat Nursing Home in Slater. Mrs. Page was born Mary 14, 1906 in Odessa, and had lived in Independence most of her life, moving to Slater in 1995. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, a 50-year member and past regent of the Independence Pioneers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Greater Kansas City Art Association and the Mary Paxton Study Class. Her survivors include her husband, Herbert A. Page of the home; one son, Charlie Page, Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Weiker Funeral Home, Slater. Burial will be in Slater City cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. ROY F. "SAM" HOUSTON
Roy F. "Sam" Houston, 70, Buckner, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Houston was born June 11, 1927, in Grain Valley. He had worked as a foreman for Olin Lake City Ammunition Plant for 30 years, until retiring in 1989. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Buckner. He was a member of the VFW Post 8101, Buckner, and the Planning and Zoning Board in Buckner. He was preceded in death by a son, William F. "Bill" Houston in 1982.
His survivors include his wife, Rosalee Houston of the home; three sisters, Viola Thomas, Buckner, Thelma Johnson, Kansas City, and Phyllis Wallace, Independence; and two grandchildren, Nathan Houston and Jennifer Houston.
