DURWARD "HICK" KIRBY

Durward "Hick" Kirby, 80, Sibley, formerly of Grain Valley, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at the Veteran`s Administration Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Kirby was born May 11, 1918, in Grain Valley. He was the owner/operator of Kirby`s Garage in Grain Valley for 34 years. He was an Army and Air Force veteran, and a member of American Legion Post 379 in Oak Grove. He was a member of M.A.R.S, a ham radio operator with call letters of W0DLY.

His survivors include his wife, Helen N. King Kirby of the home; a son, Terry Kirby, Odessa; a daughter, Gay Lynn Heard, Blue Springs; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Swan Lake cemetery, Grain Valley.

MARY E. SEARS

Mary E. Sears, 71, Independence, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Sears was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Independence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Liberty Street RLDS congregation.

Her survivors include her husband, Roy H. Sears of the home; one daughter, Dianna Azbill, Independence; one son, David Echols, Lake Lotawana; two sisters, Katherine Thompson, Independence, and Mildred Simons, New York; and one brother, Luther Paschall Jr., Independence; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.

WASOLEE M. SEWELL

Wasolee M. Sewell, 63, Kansas City, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Sewell was born May 25, 1935, in Halfway, Mo. She worked for Jesco Lubricants for seven years, as well as Kendallwood Apartments for 10 years. She was a member of the Jerico Baptist Church in Independence.

Her survivors include her husband, Wilbur Sewell of the home; one son, David L. Sewell, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one daughter, Pamela Johnson, Blue Springs; his mother, Tennie Wrinkle, Springfield, Mo.; four brothers, Morgan Wrinkle, Bolivar, Mo., Carl Wrinkle and John Wrinkle, both of Springfield, and William Wrinkle, Fair Grove, Mo.; four sisters, Wanda Perkins, Kansas City, Dorothy Loftis, Ozark, Mo., and Janice Smith and Katherine Hanson, both of Springfield; three grandchildren, Cassandra Millington, Blue Springs, and David M. Sewell and Nicki Sewell, both of Excelsior Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Son White Chapel, Gladstone. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Gladstone. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

ALISON L. SMITH

Alison Lee Henson Smith, 36, Independence, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Smith was born June 12, 1962, in Flora, Ill., and had lived in Lamoni, Iowa, before moving to Independence 14 years ago. She was a homemaker and worked part time for the Mid-Continent

Library system. She was a member of the Zion`s Witness Restoration Branch.

Her survivors include her husband, Mark Smith, and a daughter, Lindsey, both of the home; her mother, Priscilla Henson, Flora, Ill.; three brothers, Mark Henson, Kansas City, Kan., and Todd Henson and Drew Henson, both of Independence; and her maternal grandmother, Marie Crowell, West Haven, Conn.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Zion`s Witness Restoration Branch building fund or the American Cancer Society.

MARTELLE E. SHOEMAKER

Martelle Elizabeth Shoemaker, 93, Independence, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Oakwood Manor.

Mrs. Shoemaker was born April 15, 1905, in Angola, Ind., and had lived in Independence for more than 44 years. She was an elementary school teacher in rural schools and had clerked in a dress shop. In later years, she was a secretary for the Benton School and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ South Crysler Restoration Branch.

Her survivors include her husband, Dale Shoemaker of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carmen Shoemaker, Raymore, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and William Ruoff, Independence; one sister, Rachel Holubetz, Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren, Steven, Mark, Jill and Timothy Ruoff, Lynnette Calder, Greg Shoemaker and Dana Shelton; and 11 great-grandchildren, Kimie, Chad, Jenna, Amy and Clairissa Ruoff, Cam and Caleb Calder, Aubrey and Curtis Shoemaker, and Ashley and Megan Shelton.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association.

WILMA J. ABBOTT

Wilma Jean Heath Abbott, 61, Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Abbott was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Independence. She had been an officer at Bannister Bank, and was a member of the Colburn Road Restoration Branch.

Her survivors include her husband, Cecil Abbott of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Maria Marble, Blue Springs; one sister, Sharon Hess, and one brother, Dwight Heath, both of Independence; two stepchildren, Angela Strickland, Independence, and Chrystal Stahl, Gladstone, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Gary and Darlene Hennrich, Malena Hernandez, David Strickland and Brian Tipton.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Indian Ministry Council of the Americas (IMCA).

DOROTHY D. FAIRBANKS

Dorothy D. Fairbanks, 80, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Fairbanks was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Lee Fairbanks in 1955.

Her survivors include one son, Kenton Fairbanks, Kansas City; two daughters, Pamela S. Zieger, Blue Springs, and Connie R. Treffer, Independence; two brothers, Leroy Davidson, Kansas City, and Murray Davidson, Waynesville, Ohio; two sisters, Catherine Heller and Frances Church, both of Kansas City; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

DEBORAH J. JOHNSTON-CASWELL

Deborah J. Johnston-Caswell, 45, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at her home.

She was born Aug. 2, 1953, in Jackson County, Mo., and lived in

Eastern Jackson County all of her life. She had worked as a plant helper for Kansas City Power and Light for six years. She attended the Assembly of God Church. She was a member of Local 412.

Her survivors include her mother and stepfather, Nellie and Orville Barker, Odessa; three sons, Richard Combs and Jarrod Caswell, both of Independence, and Brandon Caswell of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Joni Johnston, Oak Grove; a stepbrother and sister-in-law, Larry and Bonita Barker, Odessa; and her grandmother, Evelyn Johnston, Oak Grove.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. The family suggests contributions to a memorial fund for her children.

JAMES R. PAULSELL

James Raleigh Paulsell, 82, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at St. Luke's Northland Hospital.

Mr. Paulsell was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Dutch Mills, Ark.

His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Regine "Jean" Paulsell of the home; five children and spouses, David and his wife, Betty Paulsell, Donna and her husband, Harold Mason, and Shari Paulsell, all of the Kansas City area, Karen Paulsell, Oakland, Calif., and James H. and his wife, Carla Paulsell, Thornton, Colo.; four grandchildren; one granddaughter-in-law; one great-granddaughter; and a brother, Richard and his wife, Wanda Paulsell, Joplin, Mo.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1401 N.E. 42nd Terrace, Kansas City. Burial will be in Resurrection North cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at McGilley Antioch Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

ANNA P. ROBINSON

Anna Pauline Robinson, 71, Bates City, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Care Center.

Mrs. Robinson was born March 6, 1927, in Grain Valley, and had lived in the Grain Valley, Oak Grove and Bates City areas all her life. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Robinson.

Her survivors include six sons, Robbie Robinson, Odessa, Dale Robinson, Blue Springs, Jesse Robinson, Bruce Robinson, Gary Robinson and Joe Robinson, all of Bates City; a daughter, Nora Robinson, Bullard, Texas; a brother, W. Earl Brown, Grain Valley; a sister, Lorraine Hughes, Grain Valley; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home.

RICHARD L. RANDALL

Richard L. Randall, 73, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mr. Randall was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Lundington, Mich., and had lived in this area since 1944. He was a design engineer at Allis Chalmers for 32 years, retiring in 1983. He was active in the Blue Ridge Gem and Mineral Society, and had been a Scoutmaster for Troop 383. He served as a deacon at the Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch.

His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marie Randall of the home; three children, Lynn Link, Blue Springs, and Randy Randall and Rick Randall, both of Independence; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters, Eloise Testerman, Gower, Mo., Daniel Randall, Blue Springs, Calvin Randall, Karen Johnson and Cynthia Lamberty, all of Independence, and Lorena Wilcox, Sedalia, Mo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

GLENN SCHMIDT

Glenn Schmidt, 85, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999.

Mr. Schmidt was born June 25, 1913, in Lytton, Iowa, and moved to Independence after serving in World War II. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor as a Navy Petty officer and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Organization. He was employed as a machinist at Allis Chalmers for 20 years, retiring in 1977. He enjoyed making machines and tools, and was an inventor of gadgets. He was active with the Vesper Hall senior citizens group. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended Farview Heights Restoration Branch.

His survivors include his wife, Pauline Schmidt of Independence; a stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Robinson, Tampa, Fla.; a son, Paul Schmidt, California; a daughter, Mary Etheridge, Washington; six grandchildren, Deborah Dean, Denise Tolle, Deanna Ponessa, David Evans, Janice Taylor and Darren Evans; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were today at Speaks Midtown Chapel, Independence. Burial was in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Kansas Caity Hospice.

EARL G. SINCLAIR

Earl G. Sinclair, 100, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999.

Mr. Sinclair was born Dec. 10, 1898, in Bad Axe, Mich., and had lived in Independence since 1932. He was a carpenter and an automobile and electrical mechanic for more than 70 years, retiring in 1973. He was a member and deacon of Summit Grove Restoration Church, and a Merchant Marine veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Sinclair, and one son, Lawrence Sinclair.

His survivors include two sons, John Sinclair and Jerry Sinclair; two daughters, Carol Wieligman and Dorothy Handy; six grandchildren, Cheri, Larry, Loren, Sheldon, Gregg and Eddy; 11 great-grandchildren, Shelly, Aubrey, Sami, Erika, Nicole, Becca, Heath, Jacob, Cory, Kyle and Edward; and one great-great-granddaughter, Arizona.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Current Expenses Fund at the church.

GERTRUDE A. "BILLIE" SMITH

Gertrude Alice "Billie" Smith, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at the Rosewood Care Center.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 29, 1912, in the Mount Washington area of Independence and had lived in Independence most of her life. She had been a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Co. many years ago. She was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS congregation. Her husband, Harry K. Smith, died in 1996.

Her survivors include one son, Kelley Smith, Independence; one daughter, Sharon Lea Heigele, Colorado; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be noon Saturday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

DAVID A. SMITH

David A. Smith, 85, Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born July 17, 1913, in Independence and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was the owner/operator of Daves "66" Service in Independence and then Daves Oil Co. in Drexel, Mo., retiring in 1967 after 25 years in the oil business. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His survivors include his wife, Ethel Smith of the home; two sons, David A. Smith Jr. of the home, and Eric J. Smith, Pensacola, Fla.; and one grandson.

Entombment services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mound Grove cemetery mausoleum. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Liberty Hospital Hospice, 2525 Glenn Hendren, Liberty, Mo. 64069.
