RICHARD L. BETTS SR.

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard Lloyd Betts Sr., 67, Odessa, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at St.Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Lt. Col. Betts was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Kansas City, and had lived in Enid, Okla.; Montgomery, Ala.; Los Angeles and Pratville, Ala., before moving to Odessa. He was a 1947 graduate of Northeast High School, Kansas City. He earned a bachelor`s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri. He did postgraduate work in meteorology at St. Louis University and post graduate work in education at Auburn University. He retired from the Air Force with more than 20 years of service as a pilot and flight trainer. He had more than 6, 000 hours of flying time in the Air Force, including more than 600 combat missionsin Vietnam. After retirement he taught high school mathematics for 18 years, including 16 years at the Odessa High School, until retiring in 1992. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oak Grove.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Betts of the home; three sons, Richard L. Betts Jr., Ridgeland, Miss., Steven Michael "Mike" Betts of the home, and Dennis Wayne Betts, Blue Springs; a brother, Minford Betts, Lake Eufala, Okla.; and three grandchildren. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the building fund at the church.

SARA G. CRICK

Sara Grace Crick, infant daughter of Tom and Leisa Crick of Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Her survivors also include her brother, Jacob Thomas Crick of the home; her paternal grandparents, John and Shirley Crick, maternal grandparents, Joanne Royle, and John and Wanda Royle, and paternal great-grandmother, Margaret Moore, all of Independence; and her maternal great-grandmother, Helen McConnell, Kansas City.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark`s Catholic Church in Independence. Family graveside services will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the Infant Loss Program, St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs, or to the St. Mark`s Catholic Church, Independence.

MICHAEL A. HARRISON

Michael A. Harrison, 55, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, the at Truman Medical Center East Care Center.

Mr. Harrison was born Oct. 23, 1942, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident.

His survivors include his mother, Dorothy Harrison, Independence; two sisters, Cynthia Harrison and Nancy Kruger, both of Blue Springs; a son, Thomas Alexander Harrison, Moberly, Mo.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Private burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery, Independence.

BERNICE M. WOOD

Bernice Mae Wood, 68, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Wood was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Portland, Pa., and had lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., prior to moving to the Blue Springs area. She had worked as a residential and restaurant manager. She was a Baptist by faith. She was a member of the PGA.

Her survivors include two sons, Mark Monette, Blue Springs, and RogerWood, Oak Grove; a brother, Howard Ott, Bangor, Pa.; her mother, Marie A. Beck, Bangor; and four grandchildren, Sarah L. Wood, Vanessa M. Wood, Crystal E. Wood and Anna Marie Monette.

Services were Monday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial was in the Blue Springs cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Shriner`s Childrens Hospital.

EMMA M. LOEDING

Emma Marie Loeding, 82, Warrensburg, Mo., died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the Western Missouri Medical Center. Her survivors include four daughters, Joyce Heide and Marie Worden, both of Warrensburg, Dorothy Loeding, Dowagiac, Mich., and Karen Glasscock, Shelbyville, Tenn.; one son, Robert Loeding, Dowagiac; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services were Sunday at the Knob Noster (Mo.) Restoration Branch. Private burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg.

DORA B. BAKER

Dora Belle Baker, 93, Independence, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at the Pleasant Valley (Mo.) Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Baker was born July 21, 1904, in Buckner and had lived in Independence for approximately 40 years. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Capt. Charles Joseph Baker, died in 1972.

Her survivors include four daughters, Dorothea Joslin, Calhoun, Ga., Frances Walker, Liberty, Mo., Lillie Spieler, Kansas City, and Georgia Taylor, Raytown; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at D.W.Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

ANNA D. BANNISTER

Anna Drusella Bannister, 88, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at Truman Medical Center.

Mrs. Bannister was born July 23, 1909, in Orrick, Mo., and lived in this area until 1971 when she moved to Las Vegas, Nev. She returned to this area in 1983. She owned and operated Ann & Ethel`s Cafe in Kansas City, retiring in 1971. She attended Englewood Assembly of God Church.

Her survivors include four sons, Jim Bannister, Oak Grove, Steven Bannister, Gravois Mills, Mo., Warren Bannister, South Korea, and John Webb, Kansas City; three daughters, Marilyn Taylor and Cecelia Wakefield, both of Oak Grove, and Charity Cygal, Sedona, Ariz.; two brothers, James Roe and Tom Roe; 20 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Palm Memorial Park, Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.

TRAVIS J. RICHARDSON

Travis J. Richardson, 63, Independence, died Monday, July 28, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Richardson was born June 5, 1934, in Carbon Hill, Ala., and had lived in Independence for 34 years. He owned Independence Tow Service for six years.

His survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara J. Richardson of the home; one daughter, Sheila Drake, Blue Springs; his stepmother, Helen Richardson, Carbon Hill; three sisters, Betty Barnett and Louise Outlaw, both of Birmingham, Ala., and Gabriella Pierce, Carbon Hill; four grandchildren, Ryan Richardson and Brad Richardson, both of Independence, and Teisha Drake and Cara Drake, both of Blue Springs; and two great-grandchildren, Brian Richardson and Preston Richardson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

SUSIE YOUNG

Susie Rizor Young, 90, Independence, died Monday, July28, 1997.

Mrs. Young was born Sept. 4, 1906, in Marion County, Ohio. She had been a dental assistant in the office of Dr. B.D. Branstetter, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Village Heights RLDS congregation. Her husband, David Young, died March 17, 1996.

Her survivors include three daughters, Virginia Testerman, Faucett, Mo., Dolores Martin, Independence, and Jan Wilson, Lakewood, Colo.; two sisters, Lola Cosgrove, Battlecreek, Mich., and Mildred Ashley, Coldwater, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.

MILDRED A. BRECHT

Mildred Alice Brecht, 68, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.

Mrs. Brecht was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Kansas City, and had lived in this area her entire life. She was a homemaker. She was a devout Christian and a charter member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Peculiar, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Pauline Phillips and her brother, DonPhillips.

Her survivors include her husband, Lloyd A. Brecht of the home; a son, Rick Brecht, Independence; two daughters, Vickie Long and Brenda Slaughter, both of Lee`s Summit; four brothers, Al Phillips, Independence, Bob and Larry Phillips, both of Cross Timbers, Mo., Terry Phillips, Dover, Mo.; three sisters, Barbara McNurlin, Judy Shockey and Gail Franklin, all of Independence; nine grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills East.Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

JORDAN COX

Jordan Cox, 14, Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at his home.

Jordan was born Jan. 11, 1983, in Independence. He was a freshman at Blue Springs South High School, where he was a member of the Boys Concert Choir. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and a member of the youth choir. He was a member of First Priority and RADD at the church. He was a past member of the yearbook staff and the concert choir at Moreland Ridge Middle School. He was a former member of Cub Scout Pack 604.

His survivors include his parents, RonaldL. and Kathy Sue Cox of the home; two brothers, Brendon Cox, Warrensburg, Mo., and Jacob Cox of the home; his paternal grandmother, Virginia Cox, Spring, Texas, and his maternal grandmother, Mary McKinzie, Chilhowee, Mo.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Youth Department of the First Baptist Church.

ROBERT M. DAVIES

Robert M. Davies, 75, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, Kansas City.

Mr. Davies was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., and had lived in the Independence area since 1925. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was chairman and owner of Reed Oven Co. He was active in daily operations of the company until his death. He was a member of Bakery Equipment Manufactures Association, the American Institute of Baking and the Allied Trades of Baking Industry. He was a member of the Mic-O-Say and the Boy Scouts 229 of the First Christian Church. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence.

His survivors include his wife of 33 years, Kathryn W. Davies of the home; a daughter, Linda S. Crowder, Independence; a son, Timothy M. Davies, Kansas City; a brother, Edward H. Davies, Independence; five grandchildren, John R. Crowder II, Jennifer K. Crowder, Christopher R. Davies, Lauren T. Davies and Jonathan Hoyt.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at George C. Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund in care of the American Institute of Baking, 1213 Bakers Way, P.O. Box 3999, Manhattan, Kan. 66505-3999.

MARY E. GARRIGUS

Mary Ellen Garrigus, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Garrigus was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Foster, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Conn in 1990.

Her survivors include a son, Kenneth Conn, Macon, Mo.; four daughters, Nancy Orozco and Velma Jones, both of Independence, Evelyn Whittenburg, Harrison, Ark., and Linda Hubbard, Kansas City; 23 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

MELINDA I. CAYNOR HADDOCK

Melinda I. Caynor Haddock, 33, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at her home.

She was born July 18, 1964, in Kansas City and had lived in Independence the past 30 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School.

Her survivors include her two daughters, Heather R. Bailey and Sarah J. Haddock, both of the home; her mother, Ruby D. Sharp, her stepfather, Albert B. Sharp, and her grandmother, Coline M. Smead, all of Independence; two brothers, David A. Caynor, Omaha, Neb., and Steven R. Sharp, Blue Springs; and a sister, Barbara D. Caynor Deen, El Dorado, Kan.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Melinda I. Haddock Memorial Fund, in care of any Nations Bank.

GERTRUDE V. KOLOSICK

Gertrude Viola Kolosick, 93, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Kolosick was born June 7, 1904, in Spruce, Mo., and had lived 55 years of her life in Independence. In her early life she had been a school teacher for the Spruce School System and had also worked for the Lake City Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Independence and was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Engineers Auxiliary. Her husband, A.W. Kolosick, died in 1966.

Her survivors include a son, Robert Kolosick, Independence; a daughter, Lois Burton, Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Appleton City (Mo.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.

DONNER DELORIS R. KROESEN

Donner Deloris R. Kroesen, 95, Independence, died, Monday, Dec. 29, 1997.

Mrs. Kroesen was born March 16, 1901, in Woodbine, Iowa, and had lived in Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Independence. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a Blue Bird leader, an Oriole leader and had taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. In 1927 she was an assistant to Bertha Constance in writing stories and preparing material and teaching for the first vacation church Bible school on the RLDS campus. She worked as a nurse`s aide at the Independence Sanitarium and then at Sears and Roebuck Co. for 27 years as a cashier. She became a member of the Laurel Club in 1971. She was music coordinator for 10 years in the church congregation at Heritage House. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, George Kroesen in 1986 and a son, Jack Kroesen in 1992.

Her survivors include two sons, George D. Kroesen, Oak Grove, and Carlos R. Kroesen, Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Clarice L. McKay, Independence; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 until service time at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

WESLEY H. MARCKS

Wesley Herman Marcks, 84, Higginsville, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown.

Mr. Marcks was born Nov. 8, 1913, in Higginsville. He was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marietta Anna Marcks on Aug. 3, 1985. He was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ.

His survivors include his son, Louis Kent Marcks, Hingham, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Louise Schemmer, Independence, and Jeanette Edna Marcks, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; two sisters, Lorene Frevert, Concordia, Mo., and Meta Frevert, Richmond, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Salem United Church of Christ, Higginsville. Interment will be in Salem Church cemetery. Friends may call from one hour prior to service time in the church assembly room. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Church Memorial Fund.
