MIZE

Hettie Lurlene Mize, 78, Portland, died Nov. 2, 1999, at her home.

She was born March 14, 1921, in Taones, Tenn., a daughter of Carlos and Rosa Fry. She was married Oct. 8, 1938, in Lepinto, Ark., to Chester Malone Mize, who preceded her in death.

She worked for Florsheim Shoe Factory and was a member of the Portland Baptist Church.

Survivors include: three sons, Travis Paul Mize, Portland, Arvie Lee Mize, Memphis, Tenn., and John David Mize, Tebbetts; one daughter, Nina Faye Wright, West Memphis, Ark.; four brothers, Carlos L. Fry, state of Arkansas, Edward Wilson, state of Mississippi, Elbert Wilson, Naylor, and Jerry Wilson, Leechville, Ark.; one sister, Bonnie Kenny, Marshall, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Her stepfather, Charlie Wilson, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home, Holts Summit. The Rev. Terry O'Brien will officiate. Burial will be in Portland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

WITTHAUS

Vic Witthaus, 96, Centertown, died Nov. 3, 1999, at Oak Tree Villa,  Jefferson City.

Arrangements are incomplete at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California.

WELLS

Sydney Luther Wells Sr., 84, Chamois, died Nov. 4, 1999, in Chamois.

He was born Oct. 12, 1915, in Chicago. He was married to Virginia Kmiec, who survives.

He attended schools in the Chicago area. He owned and operated the FM Radio repair shop in Chicago, and was a building engineer at the Ohio East Hotel in Chicago until his retirement. He was a Lutheran.

Other survivors include: two sons, Sydney Luther Wells Jr., Chamois, and Michael Wells, Addison, Ill.; one stepson, Carl Kmiec, Chicago; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home, Chamois. The Rev. Gary Ruff will officiate. Private family graveside services will be held.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Memorials are suggested to Option Home Health Care.

HUNLEY

Louis Henry Hunley III, 54,  Jefferson City, died Nov. 2, 1999, at his home.

He was born May 8, 1945, in Sedalia, a son of Louis H. II and Nettie Belle Simms Hunley.

A 1963 graduate of Lincoln Lab School, he received a bachelor's degree in education from Lincoln University in 1967. He earned a master's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1977. He was a teacher in Missouri and Arkansas and served as principal at the Missouri Department of Corrections in  Jefferson City.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart.

He was a member of Quinn Chapel AME Church, Tony Jenkins American Legion Post 231 and  Jefferson City Lodge 9, Free and Accepted Masons.

Survivors include: one daughter, Angela S. Hunley, Dallas, Texas ; one son, Steven D. Rachel, Dallas; one half sister, Nina Hewitt, Champaign, Ill.; three half brothers, Arnold Hunley, Andre Hewitt and Julius Hewitt, all of Champaign; and two granddaughters.

One son, Bryan Christopher Hunley, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. The Rev. Marion Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in Longview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Monday.

HAWKEN

Andrew E. Hawken, 84, Tuscumbia, died Nov. 3, 1999, at his home.

He was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Miller County, a son of Louis and Rose McGowan Hawken. He was married April 7, 1951, in Lake Ozark, to Alice M. Keeth, who survives at home.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked 16 years at Anchor Mill in Tuscumbia and Eldon, and at Tuscumbia R-3 school.

Other survivors include: one son, Louie Dale Hawken, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; one daughter, Cheryl Gladback, Eldon; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Louis Hawken, one daughter, Anita Lynn Hawken, and one grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rekus Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Gene Edwards will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

COON

Pauline Iula Coon, 79, Eldon, died Nov. 4, 1999, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Kokomo, Ind., a daughter of Myron M. and Dorthy Mae Brown Moore. She was married Oct. 31, 1942, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Owen Lavon "Bud" Coon, who died Jan. 3, 1996.

She was an Army veteran of World War II and a machine operator at Chesebrough Ponds. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church, Enon, Ladies Auxiliary, V.F.W., and American Legion.

Survivors include: one daughter, Donna Jean "D.J." Busch Woods, Eldon; three sons, Michael Owen Coon, Grove, Okla., Charles J. Coon and M.M. "Buz" Coon,  Jefferson City; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The body will be cremated under direction of Philips Funeral Home, Eldon. No services are planned.

Memorials are suggested to Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, 800 Hospital Drive, Columbia, Mo. 65201.

RENTSCHLER

Carl Hadley Rentschler, 89, Fulton, died Nov. 5, 1999, at Fulton Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Fulton, a son of Fredrick and Minnie Bonard Rentschler. He was married Jan. 26, 1935, in Mexico, to Stella Katherine Chism, who survives at home.

He was a farmer and operated a cattle trucking business. He was a member of the Carpenters' Union and a deacon and elder of Central Christian Church.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Kay Pingleton, Columbia; one son, J. Rentschler, Fulton; one brother, Howard Rentschler, Fulton; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Randall Germann will officiate. Burial will be in Central Christian Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

SMITH

Pauline Smith, 101, Glen Carbon, Ill., formerly of Dixon, died Nov. 2, 1999, at Eden Village Care Center, Glen Carbon.

She was born Dec. 27, 1897, in Brinktown, a daughter of Francis and Theresa Viessmann Duffin. She was married May 5, 1916, in St. Louis, to Elmer H. Smith, who died Dec. 14, 1978.

A homemaker, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Granite City, Ill., Holy Family Prayer Line, St. Ann's Sodality, St. Mary's Church, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include: three sons, Chester Smith, Denver, Colo., Elmer Smith, Staunton, Ill., and Paul Smith, Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Leonora Akers, Bloomington, Minn., Cecelia Owens, Denver, and Gertrude Petty, Granite City; 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Dixon Cemetery.

Arrangements are under direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, Dixon.

WIEBERG

Gladys M. Wieberg, 71, Argyle, died Nov. 4, 1999, at home.

She was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Westphalia, a daughter of Lawrence and Helen Scheulen Temmen. She was married Oct. 15, 1947, in Westphalia, to Frank Wieberg, who survives at home.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Aloysius Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8045, both of Argyle.

Other survivors include: three sons, Jerome Wieberg, Vienna, Ralph Wieberg, Koeltztown, and Ruben Wieberg, Argyle; three daughters, Irene Buechter, Brinktown, Ruth Redel,  Jefferson City, and Sandra Backes, Argyle; four brothers, Lawrence Temmen,  Jefferson City, William Temmen, Westphalia, Bernard Temmen and Walter Temmen, both of Folk; two sisters, Mildred Wieberg and Alice Markway, both of Westphalia; 11 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at St. Aloysius Church. The Rev. Mike Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, Vienna, with a rosary service at 6 p.m. and a vigil service at 8:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 9-10:30 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

GRIFFIN

Orville Floy Griffin, 86, Iberia, died Nov. 7, 1999, at Miller County Nursing Home, Tuscumbia.

He was born June 15, 1913, in Miller County, a son of William "Bill" and Emma Gibson Griffin. He was married May 8, 1937, in Tuscumbia, to Mary E. Jones, who died Sept. 24, 1987.

He retired in 1974 after 25 years as a construction lineman foreman for Gascosage Electric Co-Op in Dixon. He was a member of Iberia United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Emogene McDonald and Connie Hammack, both of Iberia; one brother, Hubert Griffin, Grandview; three grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. RoseEllen Hoff and Wayne Vaughan will officiate. Burial will be in Iberia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.
