FAVA D. PHILLIPS

Fava D. Phillips, 76, Independence, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Phillips was born June 16, 1921, in Coelleda, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 50 years. She had worked for 47 years for Langdon Supply Co. as an office manager and buyer. She was a member of the ABWA. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, where she was a member of the Lydia Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Phillips in 1979.

Her survivors include a daughter, Sandy Ollar, Columbia, Mo.; three sons, Jim Ollar, Columbia, Robert Phillips, Lee`s Summit, and Larry Phillips, Harrison, Ark.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

WENDY G. CARTER WATKINS

Wendy G. Carter Watkins, 34, Wintergarden, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at a hospital in Wintergarden.

Mrs. Watkins was born Dec. 12, 1963, in Independence, and had lived in Independence until moving to Floriday in 1997. She was a homemaker.

Her survivors include her husband, Kenny Watkins, two sons, Jeffrey Carter and Alex Carter, all of Wintergarden; her mother and stepfather, Pauline Schaller and Richard Schaller, both of Belton; four sisters, Tonnie Moore, Orlando, Fla., Diane Voyles, Fort Myers, Fla., Debbie Kolberg, Wright City, Mo., and Tammy Smith, Independence; and a brother, Farron Jones, Wright City, Mo.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Charity Missionary Baptist Church, 9300 Independence Ave., Independence. Cremation, with burial in Belton at a later date. Flowers will be accepted at the church Saturday morning. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

LEONA G. COLE

Leona Gentry Cole, 74, Clinton, Mo., died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton.

Mrs. Cole was born April 23, 1924, in Jackson County and had lived in Independence for most of her life until moving to Clinton six years ago. She worked for more than 10 years at Neevels Luggage in Kansas City. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by a son, George Dorland.

Her survivors include three sons, Tom Clark, Virgil Clark and Lonnie Clark, all of Clinton; four daughters, Helen Farris, Kansas City, Nancy Archaleta, Tampa, Fla., Betty Green, Buckner, and Vicki Uganski, Muskegan, Mich.; a brother, George Cole, Blue Springs; a sister, Juanita Clark, Odessa; and numerous grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Northeast Baptist Church, Clinton; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Consalus Funeral Home, Clinton.

PEARL GIBSON

Pearl Gibson, 78, Independence, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Barry Health Care Center, Kansas City.

Mrs. Gibson was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Arrow Rock, Mo., and had lived in Marshall, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1969. She was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Independence, and the Rebekah Lodge in Marshall.

Her survivors include her husband, Ed Gibson of the home; two sons, Clarence E. Gibson Jr., Kansas City, and Mark A. Gibson, Independence; a daughter, Carol A. Newman, Independence; a sister, Lou Ellen Rhoades, Marshall; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery, Marshall. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

BARBARA J. RYDER

Barbara J. Ryder, 61, Bates City, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Ryder was preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey Babcock.

Her survivors include her husband, Robert Ryder of the home; three children, Don McAlister, Bates City, Dan Noe, California, and Shelly Keehler of the home; four stepchildren, Donna Don, Dewey Babcock Jr., and Mary Gordon and Ruth Clark, both of Bates City; and her grandchildren, Ron Kamakeeaind, David Barnhart, Paia Schroeder, Lacey Babcock, Jason Babcock, Brandon McAlister, Aliesha Keehler, Bailey Gordon and Scott Clark Jr.

Her body was donated to Kansas University Medical Center.

SADIE O. SCOTT

Sadie O. Scott, 91, Odessa, formerly of Buckner, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at New Haven Nursing Home in Odessa.

Mrs. Scott was borm March 17, 1907, in Buckner and was a lifelong area resident. She was a telephone operator for several years in Buckner and Levasy, and had worked in the primer wing at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buckner.

Her survivors include a daughter, Betty Holt, Independence; four grandchildren, John Hedrick, Leavenworth, Kan., Connie Ryland, Odessa, Donna King, Grain Valley, and Carolyn Rowe, Independence; and seven great-grandchildren, Scott Newland, Cassie Box, Danny Newland, Brandon King, Tiffany King, Darian Rowe and Haley Hedrick.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HAROLD M. SINGLETON

Harold Merle Singleton, 93, Cross Timbers, Mo., died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, in the Clinton (Mo.) Hospital.

Mr. Singleton was born Jan. 10, 1905, in Abilene, Kan., and had lived in Fairmount from 1924 until moving to Cross Timbers in 1970. He was a member of the Baptist faith. He joined the Printing and Assistant`s Union of North America Local 16 in 1924 and received his Honorary Life membership in 1970. He served as chairman of the board for 20 years and was also secretary/treasurer from 1963 to 1970. He was the delegate to the international union and was one of the first lithographers in the Kansas City area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie May Singleton, and a son, Harold Merle Singleton Jr.

His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Elmer and Mathilde Singleton, Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fairview cemetery, Preston, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Cantlon Funeral Home, Urbana, Mo.

HELEN O. STEWART

Helen O. Stewart, 72, Buckner, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Stewart was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Belgreen, Ala., and was a lifelong area resident. She worked in the laundry department of ECM Hospital until she retired. She was an Air Force veteran and a Protestant.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Robert Bales, Buckner; a granddaughter, Jennifer Beauregard; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenview Memorial Chapel, Florence, Ala. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park, Florence. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Florence. Local arrangements are under the direction of Brown Funeral Home in Buckner.

OBIE O. HELTON

Obie Owen Helton, 69, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Truman Medical Center.

Mr. Helton was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Bells, Tenn., and moved to Independence in 1971. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000. He was the owner and operator of the Helton Tree and Lawn Care Service in Independence for 15 years, retiring in 1988.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy May Helton of the home; four sons, James Richard Helton and Robert Lloyd Blevins Jr., both of Independence, Bobby and Charles Helton; two daughters, Glenda Sue and Kathy Helton; a brother, Freeman Helton, Truman, Ark.; two sisters and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

RAFAEL C. COLMENARES JR.

Rafael C. Colmenares Jr., infant son of Rafael C. and Cara M. Colmenares of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital.

Rafael was born Dec. 7, 1998, in Kansas City.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

JOSEPH G. BROWN

Joseph G. Brown, 85, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at the Independence Health Care Center.

Mr. Brown was born July 3, 1913, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 58-year member of Pipefitters Local 533, and for eight years owned Brown Pneumatic Tube Service. He and his wife also owned a gathering place called Browns Bar for seven years. He attended the old St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kansas City for 35 years.

His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Olive Brown; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. and Vickie Brown, Blue Springs; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and Charles Bittel, and Vicki Ann Brown, all of Blue Springs, Teresa and Rusty Rhoads, Bates City, and Susie Shannon, Independence; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, William Brown, Independence, Donald Brown, Harrisonville, Mo.; two sisters, Joan Loy, Grandview, and Dorothy Skaggs, Gladstone, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Shiel Colonial Funeral Home, Raytown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice or Sisters of St. Francis.

FRANK KARNER

Frank Karner, 86, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Karner was born June 20, 1912, in Kansas City. He was a supervisor, and a lifetime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Independence.

His survivors include his wife of 28 years, Kathryn F. Karner of the home; one daughter, Margaret Jamar, Arnold, Mo.; one sister, Ann Freeman, and one brother, Joseph Karner, both of Kansas City; one stepdaughter, Meredith Montgomery, Independence; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were today at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown.

THOMAS H. "TOM" WRAY

Thomas H. "Tom" Wray, 50, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Wray was born July 27, 1948, in Tiptonville, Tenn. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, working for many years at the main branch in Independence. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of the D-Dudes Car Club.

His survivors include his wife, Martha Wray of the home; three daughters, Lisa Wray, Tami Hill and Kim Wray, and one grandson, Jacob Hill; and one sister, Janis Goodall of Turner, Kan.

Services were today at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Swan Lake cemetery, Grain Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Tom Wray Memorial Fund, in care of Independence Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 1094, Independence.

ELSIE M. BARROW

Elsie M. Barrow, 77, Grain Valley, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at the Santa Fe Trails Nursing Home in Lexington, Mo.

Mrs. Barrow was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Bonner Springs, Kan., and had lived in Eastern Jackson County most of her life.

Her survivors include her husband of 57 years, Albert C. Barrow of the home; four children, Susan Hall, Wichita, Kan., and Bob Barrow, Jerry Tubbs and Kay Burrus, all of Grain Valley; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the family home in Grain Valley. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice Preferred Choice. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.

ALLIECE "JACKIE" FRASHER

Alliece "Jackie" Frasher, 82, Wellington, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at the Life Care Center in Overland Park, Kan.

Mrs. Frasher was born Nov. 5, 1916. She had worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for many years, and was a member of East Gate Eastern Star Lodge 367 and the Wellington Methodist Church, and was active in United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Tom Frasher.

Her survivors include two daughters, Mary Ethel Frasher, Lee's Summit, and Linda Frasher Pointer, Independence; four grandchildren, Tom R. Frasher, Jim Frasher Pointer, Mendi Aleese Frasher-Borts and Matt R. Pointer; and two great-grandchildren, Laura Renee Frasher and Joshua Thomas Frasher.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Buckner Chapel. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Chapter, P.O. Box 8076., Prairie Village, Kan. 66208.

Jeanette M. Boyll

Jeanette M. Boyll, 94, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Rosewood Care Center.

Mrs. Boyll was born Sept. 22, 1905, in Varner, Ark. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence. Her survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, M.O. VanLandingham, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Ed and Edna VanLandingham, Silver Springs, Md.; Jason and Sonia VanLandingham, Duncan, Okla., and H. David and Suzanne Beckham, Evansville, Ind.; her daughters and sons-in-law, Colleen and Wayne Heckenlively, Independence, Jane and Charles Dale, Raytown, and F.M. VanLandingham, Independence.Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Lee's Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Independence.

Deborah 'Debbie' L. Fox

Deborah 'Debbie' Louise Fox, 46, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.

Mrs. Fox was born Jan. 10, 1954, in Tulsa, Okla.

Her survivors include her husband, Steven 'Ed' Fox of the home, a son, Jonathan 'Chad' Whiteman, a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie Dawn and Matt Cary, her parents, Mary and Clinton Morland, and two grandsons, Garret Whiteman and Landon Cary, all of Independence.

A Service of Remembrance will be 10:30 a.m. March 4 at the Waldo Avenue Restoration Branch, 810 W. Waldo Ave., Independence. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Center Place Restoration School (Tuition Fund), 810 W. Waldo Ave., Independence, Mo. 64050. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cremation Society of Kansas City.
