RUTH E. GALATIS

Ruth E. Galatis, 95, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at the Monterey Park Care Center.

Mrs. Galatis was born Sept. 16, 1903, in Wakenda, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She retired in 1972 from the Veteran's Administration Hospital, where she had worked since 1953. She was a member of the Sheffield Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Galatis in 1940, and a grandson, James Higgins in 1978.

Her survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Jackie and Bill Daniels, Oak Grove, and Lillian Pedersen, Kaufman, Texas, Vivian and Guy Slinker, Independence, and Thelma and Kenneth Farrell, Sedalia, Mo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Ruth Galatis, Oak Grove; nine grandchildren, John and Frank Higgins, Cynthia Sands, Deborah Oliver, John Galatis, Barbara Fried, Francis Cox, Guy Slinker Jr. and Tamara Kimball; 18 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

ELAINE D. McKARNIN

Elaine D. McKarnin, 62, Grain Valley, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. McKarnin was born March 8, 1936, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a merchandiser for the K-Mart stores, retiring in 1992.

Her survivors include her husband of 42 years, Ivan McKarnin of the home; one son, Mark McKarnin, Vincent, Ohio; three brothers, David Mills, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Don White, Greenwood, and Wayne White, Independence; and one sister, Wanda Green, Farmersville, Texas.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

LOE S. HIGGINS

Loe Smith Higgins, 76, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her home.

Her survivors include her husband of 53 years, Warren R. Higgins; four children, a son, Ron, and wife, Susan, a daughter, Ris, and husband, Joe, a son, Charlie and wife, Karen, and a daughter, Barb, and husband, Mike; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 4 today at the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 4 today at the church. A private unity service will be held at the home. The family suggests contributions to Cancer Action Inc., Cancer Institute of KC or to the Higgins Family Fund at the Truman Heartland Community Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sheil Colonial Chapel.

JOE ALLEN

Joe Allen, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor.

Mr. Allen was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a charter member pf the Blue Ridge Boulevard Christian Church. He was a cement contractor by trade. He was Past Master of Independence Lodge A.F. and A.M. No. 76, past High Priest of the Independence Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, past commander of the Palestine Commandery, Knights Templar, past Patron of the Independence Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and Knight Commander of Holy Royal Arch. He was a member of the Knights York Cross of Honor, Orcomot Club, Scottish Rite, Ararat Shrine and Nazarene Shrine No. 2.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia B. Allen, in 1982.

His survivors include two daughters, Betty Karr, Lincoln, Mo, and Norma Brents, Independence; two sons, Alvin Allen, St. Cloud, Fla., and Joe Allen, Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Jess Patterson, Independence; a sister, Pauline Graham, Independence; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A Masonic ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Monday followed by a Knights Templar Memorial Service. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City, Mo. Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, Independence.

GAIL H. WILKERSON

Gail H. Wilkerson, 89, Kansas City, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Wilkerson was born July 14, 1909, in Oak Grove and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a collector of Blue Willow china, and was a member of the Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Wilkerson.

Her survivors include one sister, Kathryn Reed, and one brother, Charles Scott, both of Kansas City; and three nephews, Charles C. Reed and Kenneth R. Reed, both of Independence, and Marvin Reed, Lee`s Summit.

Services were today at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial was in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City.

MARY L. CHOAT

Mary L. Choat, 81, Burkburnett, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at United Regional Hospital, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mrs. Choat was born April 9, 1917, in Clarkton, Mo., and had lived in this area for 40 years, moving to Burkburnett 18 months ago. She had been a cook for Hawthorne Restaurant for 20 years. Her husband, Marion Choat, died July 5, 1993.

Her survivors include one son, Bobby L. Choat, Burkburnett; one brother, Harrison McCoin, Aurora, Calif.; four sisters, Beulah Emmanuel, Lee`s Summit, Grace Biggs, Campbell, Mo., Hazel Smith, Holcomb, Mo., and Mozella Bosobitch, Independence; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial was in Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens, Lee`s Summit.

LORAIN L. "COTTON" MORGAN

Lorain L. "Cotton" Morgan, 71, Odessa, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence. Mr. Morgan was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Odessa and had lived his entire life in Odessa. He had worked for National Plastics from 1944 to1974, Townley Midland Hardware, North Kansas City from 1974 to 1988, Benson Lumber Yard in Odessa from 1964 to1984 and Mayflower School bus Service in Odessa from 1988 to 1994. He was a life member of the VFW Post 5675. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Odessa. His survivors include his wife, Jackie N. Morgan of the home; two sons, Eddie Barton, Independence, and Russell Branch, Holden, Mo.; two sisters, Laura Belle Filler, Odessa, and Kathleen Johnson, Higginsville, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your choice of charity.

LEONARD C. "LEN" LANGFORD JR.

Leonard Cecil "Len" Langford Jr., 75, Independence, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Langford was born July 22, 1923, in Kansas City and had lived in this area most of his life. He worked for the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City before retiring in 1990. He was in the Army Ordinance Corps during World War II, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000.

His survivors include his wife of 51 years, May Langford of the home; two sons, Paul Langford and Robert Langford, both of Independence; and two grandchildren.

Services will be from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New Salem Funeral Home, followed by a visitation from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

JAMES E. PETET

James E. Petet, 72, Independence, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Petet was born June 26, 1926, in Kansas City. He was retired from the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. He was a decorated Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines with the 1st Bomber Squadron 9th Bomber Group. He was past commander and current member of American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21, past commander of the Patriotic Council of Independence; and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000, 40 & 8, Honor Guard of Post 21, and the Independence Masonic Lodge 76 AF&AM. He was also a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

His survivors include his wife, Shirley Petet of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James David and Melinda Petet, Lee's Summit; two daughters and one son-in-law, Connie and Randy Ritchie, and Patricia Petet, Independence; two sisters, Dorthy Getz, Victorville, Calif., and Shirley A. Rist, Blue Springs; one nephew, Jack Getz; two nieces, Carole Argetsinger and LeAnne Getz; and three great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to ROTC scholarships, in care of American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21, 16701 East U.S. 40, Independence, Mo., 64055.

HUBERT T. ROACH

Hubert T. Roach, 80, Independence, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Roach was born April 23, 1918, in Atherton and was a lifelong area resident. He was an iron worker and a member of Local 10 for 55 years before he retired. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 76.

His survivors include his wife, Glenna Roach of the home; one sister, Lucille Roach, Independence; one brother, Norman Roach, Harrisonville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

ADAM T. GOFF

Adam Thomas Goff, 18, Blue Springs, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Liberty Hospital. Mr. Goff was born May 27, 1980, in Kalamazoo, Mich. He was a 1998 Blue Springs South graduate, and was attending Northwest Missouri State University, majoring in speech theater education. He was a member of Colonial Hills RLDS Church, as well as the Blue Springs South Drama Club, National Forensics League and the Blue Springs South Chamber Choir. He also was a member of the Falcon Club of America. He had performed in many plays and musicals, including most recently "The Works of Carl Sandburg, " "Aesop's Fallables, " and "Crazy For You." He was involved in numerous productions, including "Guys and Dolls." He had also directed a one-act play, "The Ledge, Ledger and Legend." His survivors include his parents, Gregory Thomas and Suzanne Rae Goff, and three brothers, Jason, Ryan and Nathaniel Goff, all of the home; maternal grandparents, Clifton and Leota Gillespie, Three Rivers, Mich.; maternal great-grandfather, John Francis Ross, Caseville, Mich.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the Adam Thomas Goff Performing Arts Scholarship.

WILLIAM 'IRL' WAGGENER

William "Irl" Waggener, 61, Independence, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, Kan.

Mr. Waggener was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Pittsburg, and lived in Pittsburg until moving to Independence in 1962. He was employed as a teacher for 10 1/2 years and later as an accountant in the Independence area. He graduated from local schools in Pittsburg and from the Kansas State Teachers College. He was of the Lutheran faith.

His survivors include his wife, Doris J. Carr Waggener of the home; one daughter, Lana Sue Fueston, Kansas City; one son, Kyle Eric Waggener, New Caanan, Conn.; his mother, Hilda Waggener, Pittsburg; one sister, Frances Boggs, Hendersonville, Tenn.; three brothers, Bob Waggener, Peoria, Ariz., Paul Waggener, Tempe, Ariz., and Jerry Waggener, Pittsburg.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery, Pittsburg.

MARION GREEN

Marion Green, 95, Richmond, Mo., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Ray County Memorial Hospital, Richmond.

Mrs. Green was born June 28, 1903, in Roads, Mo., and had lived in Millville, Mo., most of her life. She was a fraternity and sorority housemother at Washburn University, Topeka, and at the Kansas University and Missouri University before retiring at the age of 80. She was a member of the Millville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett M. Green in 1961, a daughter, Frances Ann Donovan, and a son-in-law, J.W. Clariday.

Her survivors include two sons, Mel Green, Richmond, and Bill Green, Shepherd, Mont.; one daughter, Jeanne Clariday, Independence; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the church.

IRVIN O. WURTZ

Irvin O. Wurtz, 75, Independence, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Wurtz was born May 22, 1924, in Mound City, Kan., moving to this area in 1952. He was a saw operator for the Standard Brass Foundry for 20 years, retiring in 1976. He attended the Rose of Sharon Church of God, Kansas City.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Wurtz of the home; seven sons, Robert I. Wurtz and Douglas Wurtz, both of Kansas City, Richard Wurtz and Gary Wurtz, both of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Jerry Wurtz and James B. Wurtz, both of Independence, and Dennis Wurtz, Blue Springs; four daughters, Idella Babee and Karen Berry, both of Independence, Connie Wiesner, Gladstone, Mo., and Loretta Hillyard, Bethany, Mo.; six brothers, Albert Wurtz, Eudora, Kan., Willie Wurtz, Pleasanton, Kan., Lester Wurtz, Napa, Idaho, Rosco Wurtz and Bob Wurtz, both of New Haven, Fla., and Virgil Wurtz, Olathe, Kan.; three sisters, Rozella Clemens and Lillie Jackson, both of Pleasanton, and Thelma Phillips, Fort Scott, Kan.; 29 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the church, 9621 E. 38th St. Terrace, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Liberty Hospital Hospice, 2525 Glenn W. Hendren Drive, Liberty, Mo. 64068, or to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of New Salem Funeral Home.

ROSE A. WADE

Rose Anne Wade, 73, Independence, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Wade was born April 21, 1925, in Westphalia, Kan., and had lived in Independence most of her life. After a few years of employment, she stayed home to raise her family. She was a graduate of Westphalia High School.

Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, Thomas M. Wade, known as "Joe" by the people he worked with at ADM; four children, Thomas L. Wade, Raytown, and Edward L. Wade, Helen K. Wade and Samuel K. Wade, all of Independence; five sisters, Dorothy Cox, Cecilia McQuinn, Clara Schmidt, Loretta Wernsman and Mary M. Call; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

R. LORETTA "TOOTIE" MIDDLETON

R. Loretta "Tootie" Middleton, 66, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Middleton was born Dec. 1, 1931, in Hodge, Mo., and lived in Richmond, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1957. She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Middleton.

Her survivors include her husband, John D. "Red" Middleton of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Drew Gordon, Independence, and Pam and Kevin Gross, Sibley; her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Belt, Richmond; two sisters, Dorothy Trout and Delores Bush, both of Rayville, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Shaun and Tiffany Gordon, and Matthew and Katie Gross.

Services were today at the Thurman Funeral Home. Burial was in Sunny Slope cemetery, Richmond. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

RUSSELL W. CHAPMAN

Russell Wallace Chapman, 80, Lee's Summit, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mr. Chapman was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Jack-son County. He was the owner/operator of Jackson County Implement in Lee's Summit since 1959, previous co-owned of Risinger Implement Co., and was a former owner of a restaurant. He was a farmer, served on the Blue Springs School Board, and was an entrepreneur, developing a subdivision and home building. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, where he served in several capacities, and did volunteer work for the Baptist Childrens Home. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Dorothy Chapman, and one daughter, Sharon.

His survivors include his wife, Vicki Chapman of the home; five sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Elaine Chapman, Lawrence and Chris Chapman, Lloyd and Pat Chapman, and Steven and Thomasa Chapman, all of Lee's Summit, and Everett and Barbara Chapman, Branson, Mo.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Gilbert Kelsey, Independence, Shirley and Bob Smith, Deepwater, Mo., and Nancy and Johnie Wright, Blue Springs; one brother, Ken Chapman, Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Lorene Frazier, LaHabra, Calif., and Lera Porter, Blue Springs; three stepdaughters, Debra L. Cox, Sebec, Maine, Robin L. Fleming, Milo, Maine, and Linda S. Washburn, Brownville, Maine; three stepsons, Alton J. LaPointe, Bradford, Maine, Manuel S. LaPointe, Melbourne, Fla., and Steven A. LaPointe, Dexter, Maine; 34 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the church library fund.
