INA P. MARKLAND

Ina P. Markland, 88, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Markland was born Jan. 4, 1910, in Moberly, Mo., and lived in Mount Airy, Mo., before moving to the Independence area 60 years ago. She attended Birchwood Baptist Church. Her husband, John V. Markland, died in 1972.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Jerry Bloemker, and one grandson, Michael Bloemker, all of Independence; and several cousins.

Services will be at 8 tonight at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown. Burial will be in Huntsville (Mo.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

CARY J. CAMPBELL

Cary Joseph Campbell, 21, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998.

Mr. Campbell was born April 9, 1977, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident.

His survivors include his father, Terry Campbell and his fiance, Janet Birkenmeier; his mother and stepfather, Mary and John Middleton, Kearney, Mo.; two sisters, Kristin and Cassie Campbell of the home; a stepsister, Katie Middleton; grandmothers, Lola Campbell, Harlingen, Texas, and Ethel Quinn, Shawnee, Kan.; an uncle, LeeRoy Campbell; aunts, Terri Quinn and Joanie Moritz; and five cousins.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Arley cemetery, Kearney. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Gracious Promise Foundation, 10644 West 87th St., Overland Park, Kan. 66214; or to the family in care of the funeral home.

EUNICE V. ROSE

Eunice V. Rose, 72, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Rose was born March 12, 1927, in Abilene, Texas. She was a member of Mount Washington Baptist Church.

Her survivors include five sons, William Robert Rose, Kansas City, Thomas Glenn Rose, Chicago, James Marion Rose and Peter Wayne Rose, both of Independence, and Roy Leon Rose, St. Louis; one daughter, Linda Helen Rose, Independence; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

DAVID E. FARRELL

David Earnest Farrell, 73, Lee's Summit, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee's Summit.

Mr. Farrell was born in Wilderville, Ore. He retired from TWA after 18 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, and an elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His survivors include his wife, Ruby; three daughters, Vickie Ramirez, Yvonne Kramer and Valerie Coffey; four grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lee's Summit RLDS Church, 1101 N.E. Independence Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church's sign fund.

WILLIAM A. BINK

William A. Bink, 63, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998.

Mr. Bink was born Feb. 19, 1935, in Kansas City, and had lived his entire life in the greater Kansas Ciaty area. He was a codes administrator for the City of Kansas City until his retirement in 1994. He was co-founder of Bink's Truck and Auto in Grain Valley. He was a member of the Missouri Valley Arms Association.

His survivors include his wife, Laura A. Bink; six children, Linda C. Ackerman, Denison, Texas, Catherine L. Younger, Kansas City, Michelle S. Bink, Duluth, Minn., Penny M. McGan, Belton, Teresa A. Loch, Belton, and Joseph A. Bink, Blue Springs; a brother, Joseph A. Bink, Kansas City; a sister, Judith M. Pemberton, Riverside, Calif.; a half sister, Rebecca West, Kansas City; his stepmother, Millie Bink, Raytown; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were today at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were under the direction of the Park Lawn Funeral Home.

RODNEY A. HARTSELL

Rodney Allen Hartsell, 15, Weaubleau, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Independence.

Rodney was born in Kansas City and had lived in Osceola, Mo., six years before moving to Weaubleau in October 1999. He was a ninth grade student at Weaubleau High School, where he was an honor student. He had been elected as a master counselor for the Sac-Osage Order of DeMolay in Eldorado Springs, Mo.

His survivors include his mother, Donna Benton of Garden City, Mo.; his maternal grandmother, Dorothy M. Hartsell, with whom he made his home; a brother, Chad Eugene Benton of the home; his maternal grandfather, George C. Hartsell, Garden City; maternal great-grandparents, Bertha Thomas, Lee's Summit, Allen Vernon Lee, Clinton, Mo.; two aunts, Georganna Graham, Liberty, Mo., and Sherlyne Hickerson, Drexel, Mo.; and uncle, Robert Hartsell, Green Forest, Ark.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Blackman Chapel, Kansas City. Interment will follow in the Crescent Hill cemetery in Adrian, Mo. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time at the chapel.

ARNOLD J. SOUDERS

Arnold J. Souders, 69, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Souders was born July 10, 1929, in Cameron, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked in the automotive parts department for several auto dealerships and service industries for more than 40 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

His survivors include his wife, Pauline M. Souders, Independence; one son, Michael Souders, Lathrop, Mo.; one daughter, Lorrie Maggard, Independence; one sister, Nancy Howard, Liberty, Mo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prairie Ridge cemetery, Polo, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

CHARLES B. MOORE

Charles Brockwell Moore, 81, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Moore was born May 3, 1917, in Atherton, and was a lifelong area resident. He was an archives technician for the Federal Records Center before he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member and elder in the Church of Jesus Christ Atherton Restoration Branch.

His survivors include his wife, Evelyn Moore of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Kitty Moore, one daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Larry Keeran, and one sister, Mary Moore, all of Independence; one brother, Fred Moore, Buckner; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

GEORGE E. PENLAND

George E. Penland, 69, Manhattan, Kan., died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in the Mercy Health Center, Manhattan.

Mr. Penland was born July 21, 1929, in St. Joseph, Mo., and grew up in St. Joseph and attended the local public schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served as an honor guard and paymaster at Spokane and Fort Lawton in Washington state. After the war, he worked for the Norton Ice Cream Co., St. Joseph, and spent 14 years with the Guys Nut & Chip Co., Topeka, first as a route salesman and then as a supervisor and branch manager. In 1961, he transferred to Manhattan to work for the Wonder Bread and Butter Krust Bread Co., and in 1967, he started Cinderella Cleaners in Manhattan and, along with his family, has owned and operated the cleaners for many years. He was a member of the Manhattan Lions Club and the Men of ESA. He was an avid bowler, and in the early 1960s, was an assistant baseball coach for the little league. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark E. Penland in 1996.

His survivors include his wife, Evelyn L. Neal Penland of the home; three sons, Nicholas L. Penland, Independence, Gregory N. Penland, Colorado Springs, and Darrel K. Penland, Manhattan; two daughters, Janice K. Hinman and Nancy L. Moss, both of Manhattan; two brothers, Thomas L. Penland, Gladstone, Mo., and Robert C. Penland, St. Joseph; one sister, Shirley Burlingame, Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan. Cremation will follow the services with inurnment at a later date. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. The family suggests contributions to the George E. Penland Memorial Fund; Konza Prairie; Center or Basic Cancer Research-KSU; St. Jude's Childrens Hospital; or Heartsprings, Wichita, Kan. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

SOLOMON D. HENRY

Solomon Davis Henry, 70, Kansas City, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Henry was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Idabel, Okla. He attended Kensington Avenue Baptist Church and Haskell High School, and was a member of the Heart of America Indian Center. He was a member of Local 61 Carpenter District Council and 1521 Millwright. He retired from the city of Kansas City in 1991 after 12 years of service. He was preceded in death by two sons, Randall and Terry in 1980.

His survivors include his wife, Ethel Peppers Duncan Henry of the home; four sons, Paul Henry, El Cajon, Calif., Bruce Henry, Springdale, Ark., David Henry, Garfield, Ark., and Darrell Duncan, Rogers, Ark.; two daughters, Rhonda McLeod, Rogers, and LaDonna Duncan, Kansas City; two brothers; three sisters; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City; cremation. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.

WILLIAM L. "BILL" GOEBEL

William L. "Bill" Goebel, 78, Independence, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at his home. Mr. Goebel was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Kiowa, Kan., and lived in Leroy, Kan., where he graduated from high school. He attended Central Business College in Kansas City, and after graduating, served for three years as a sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. He worked for the Amoco Oil Co. in Sugar Creek for 28 years, retiring in 1979, was a member of the Amoco Retirees Club, and was on the Board of the Standard of Sugar Creek Credit Union for 18 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 499 in Blue Springs, Masonic Lodge 76 in Independence, and the Eastgate Christian Church Disciples of Christ. His survivors include his wife, Marian Goebel of the home; two children, David Goebel, Independence, and Lisa Taylor, Lee's Summit; three grandchildren, Keaton McRay, Jessica Goebel and Bobby Taylor; his mother, Eunice Goebel, Iola, Kan.; and one brother, Ralph E. Goebel, Shawnee, Kan. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

RUTH A. BANKS

Ruth A. Banks, 80, Independence, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Banks was born April 27, 1918, in Ottumwa, Iowa, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a medical assistant for several area doctors for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Blue Ridge RLDS congregation.

Her survivors include her husband, Francis M. Banks of the home; one son, Steven M. Banks, Independence; one daughter, Jane D. Watkins, and one sister, Margaret E. Brown, both of Kansas City; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to Graceland College, 700 College Ave., Lamoni, Iowa 50140.

EDWARD L. "EDDIE" THOMAS

Edward Leroy "Eddie" Thomas, 35, Independence, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999.

Mr. Thomas was born Dec. 18, 1963, in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. He graduated from William Chrisman High School and had served in the Army. He worked for Raytown Dodge for several years, and was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ.

His survivors include his mother and stepfather, Juanita and Carman Dunnam; four brothers, Brian Dunnam, Charles Dunnam, Thomas Dunnam and Robbie Dunnam; four sisters, Lisa Weeks, Tracy Cederstrom, Barbara Williamson and Hope Hanna; two stepsisters, Lisa Wilgers and Kelly Goodman; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Espy; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, 727 N. Main St. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family to help defray funeral expenses, in care of the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

WILLIAM C. PETERS

William Charles "Pete" Peters, 85, Kansas City, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Peters was born Sept. 2, 1913, in St. Joseph, Mo. He lived in Kansas City for 55 years and was retired from Gene Cable Chevrolet as a body technician. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge #659.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary O'Connell; brother, Milton Peters; and sister, Mildred Mann.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Louise Vestal Peters; son, Marvin Peters and wife Pat of Belton, Mo.; step-son, Richard Wells of Salisbury, Mo.; sisters, Cora Minor of Westminster, Co., and Helen Smith of St. Joseph; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; niece, Doris Linneman of Blackwater, Mo., and many more friends and relatives.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, July 26, at Mount Moriah & Freeman Home. Funeral services will follow at Mount Moriah cemetery.

ADELLE O. GORDON

Adelle O. Gordon, 85, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Care.

Mrs. Gordon was born March 10, 1913, in Davis, S.D., and been an area resident since 1924. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Gordon in 1994.

Her survivors include three nephews, Scott Gage, Jeffrey Gage and Matthew Stucky; and three nieces, Pamela Hopp, Melissa and Maura Stucky.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Moriah Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

PHYLLIS CORNISH

Phyllis Davies Cornish, 79, Holt, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at the Clinton County Care Center, Plattsburg, Mo.

Mrs. Cornish was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Evsham, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Canada, and lived in Canada until moving to Independence in 1959. She moved to Holt in 1988. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Iral Cornish, who died in 1996.

Her survivors include a daughter, Heather Vawter, Prince George, British Columbia, Canada; one son and daughter-in-law, Kirby and Carla Cornish, Holt; two brothers, William V. "Bill" Davies, Oak Grove, and Maurice Davies, Independence; three sisters, Vida Cummings, Chris Anderson and Doris Ball, all of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Fry Chapel, Kearney, Mo. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Kearney.
