RHODA M. JOHNSON

Rhoda M. Johnson, 86, Oak Grove, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.

Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Bates City, and was a lifelong Oak Grove resident. She worked in the cafeteria of Unity Inn of Kansas City, the Shoe Factory in Odessa, Jackson County Hospital and at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for more than 13 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary 499. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Johnson in 1972, a son, James D. Johnson in 1967, and a grandson, Steven Gallagher in 1995.

Her survivors include a son, Gerald Leon Johnson, Blue Springs; four daughters, Barbara E. Carlyle, Las Vegas, Nev., Marjorie M. Arth, Odessa, Sharla N. Romaker, Independence, and Shirley A. Stewart, Belton, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

RONALD E. MANUEL

Ronald Eugene Manuel, 40, Oak Grove, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Manuel was born Feb. 9, 1957, in Independence. He was a graduate of the Electronics Institute of Kansas City and was employed by the Greif Brothers Corp. He served in the Army for two years. He was a member of the Singles Department of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, and head of AA.

His survivors include two brothers, Dwight W. Manuel, Higginsville, Mo., and Dale W. Manuel, Mayview, Mo.; two sisters, Vickie D. Duren, Odessa, and Alice A. Manuel, Kansas City; his grandmother, Laura Phillips, Oak Grove; four nephews; and five nieces.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Shore cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Royer Funeral Home.

EUGENE E. SWANSON

Eugene Edwin Swanson, 74, Kansas City, Kan., died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at the Sharon Lane Nursing Center, Shawnee, Kan.

Mr. Swanson was born June 19, 1923, in Kansas City. He worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway for 31 years, retiring as secretary-treasurer of the board in 1974. He and his first wife, Marcia Lovie Coulter Swanson, owned and operated Raytown Catering Service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Crestview Assembly of God. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1982.

His survivors include his wife, Cora Reynolds Swanson, Kansas City, Kan.; a son, Eugene E. Swanson Jr., Raytown; four daughters, Beverly Goodrick, Independence, MelodyStacy, Overland Park, Kan., Gloria Cox, Lee`s Summit, and Verna Springer, Lee`s Summit; four stepchildren, Janet Williams, Shawnee Mission, Kan., Ray Reynolds, Germany, Dale Reynolds, Blue Springs, and Rick Reynolds, Independence; three brothers, George Swanson, Lincoln, Mo., Don Swanson, Independence, and John Swanson, Stilwell, Kan.; three sisters, Barbara Allen, Sedalia, Mo., Mary Swanson, Springfield, Mo., and Martha Warstadt, Strafford, Mo.; seven grandchildren;five step grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be 4 p.m. Thursday in South New Home cemetery, Cross Timbers, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Shatter the Darkness Ministries International, 2738 W. Cherokee, Springfield, Mo. 65807.

ELEANOR M. ALLEN

Eleanor M. Allen, 80, Kansas City, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Woodbine Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Allen was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Neosho, Mo. She worked for TWA for 32years in the payroll department. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 55 years and a member of Northgate Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her husband of 40 years, Aldella Allen, of the home; a sister-in-law, Margaret McSparren, Independence; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Mondy, at Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel, 10507 Holmes Road. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel.

RUTH M. GALLAGHER

Ruth M. Gallagher, 76, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Oct. 7, 1997, at Lee`s Summit Hospital.

Mrs. Gallagher was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Arma. Kan. She lived in Independence for 33 years before moving to John Knox Village in 1993. She was active in the Independence music club for many years and sang in the Messiah Choir for 15 years. She was a volunteer at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center and then at Lee`s Summit Hospital, until her death.

Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, John F. Gallagher, of the home; one daughter, Martha Carlton, Independence; one granddaughter, Dawn Hoyer, Independence; one grandson, Matthew Carlton, Atchison, Kan.; and one great-grandson, Zachary Carlton of Independence.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Village Heights RLDS Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

MILLARD C. HARMON

Millard Cole Harmon, 71, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Harmon was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Horton, Mo., and lived in Independence for 22 years. He retired as a truck driver from the Jack Cooper Co. in 1991. He was a Baptist and member of Teamsters Local No. 41. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Violet Harmon, of the home; one daughter, Leitha Wilford, Pomona, Kan.; two step-daughters, Linda Smith, Independence, and Sheila Engelbrecht, Oak Grove; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Garden. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital.

EVELYN M. HEAVNER

Evelyn May Heavner, 74, Buckner, formerly of Independence, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Heavner was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Freeman, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Heavner, in 1996.

Her survivors include three sons, Joseph L.Robinson, Overland Park, Kan., Arthur L. Robinson, Schell City, Mo., and Carl C. Robinson, Clinton, Mo.; three daughters, Sylvia M. Nichelson, Buckner, Patricia A. Reed, Independence, and Effie L. Johnson, Appleton City, Mo.; one brother, Thomas E. Hamilton, Osceola, Mo.; one sister, Catherine Heater, Independence; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

MARTHA A. JOHNSON

Martha Almeda Johnson, 84, Cole Camp, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct.15, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Redland, Okla. She was a housewife and a member of Ozark Tabernacle Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack E. Johnson, on May 3, 1997, by one son, Monroe, one sister and three brothers.

Her survivors include three sons, Carl T. Johnson, Cole Camp, and Edward L. Johnson and Willard Johnson, both of Independence; eight daughters, Gracie Johnson, Wanda Johnson, and Mildred Warrix, all of Urbana, Mo., Phyllis Boutross and Deanna Tiemey, both of Independence, Joyce Johnson, Cole Camp, Brenda Lindstrom, Riley, Kan., and Debra Wright, Olathe, Kan.; one sister, Rebecca Hamby, Sedalia, Mo.;two brothers, William Moore, Gravois Mills, Mo., and Oscar Moore, Kansas City;36 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Fox Funerl Home in Cole Camp. Burial will be in Memorial cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

LOIS L. KEMPLE

Lois L. Kemple, 74, formerly of Oak Grove, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Persian Memorial Hospital in Brookfield, Mo.

Mrs. Kemple was born in Macon County, Mo., and lived in Oak Grove for many years before moving to Marcelilne, Mo., 17 years ago. She worked as a hairdresser and restaurant owner in Oak Grove and was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Thomas Kemple, of the home; one step-son, Thomas E. Kemple of Redmond, Wash.; one sister, Virginia Manley of Oregon; 10 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove with burial in the Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.

GERALD L. KITCHEN

Gerald Lee Kitchen, 56, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mr. Kitchen was born Nov. 19, 1940, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong resident of Independence. He was a truck driver.

His survivors include one brother, Ronald Kitchen, Independence, and one sister, Carolyn Williams, Independence.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the chapel.

PALMER C. PHILLIPS

Palmer C. Phillips, 87, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997 at his home.

Mr. Phillips was born Nov. 20, 1909 in Dochester, Mass. and lived most of his life in Independence. He worked as a journeyman layout inspector for Ford Motor Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church.

His survivors include a son, Robert C. Phillips, Livingston, Texas; a daughter Donna G. Gallardo, Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Viola Maitland, Independence; Evelyn Hysell, Overland Park, Kan.; and Virginia Bryce, Merritt Island, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services are at 2 p.m., Monday at Rose Hill cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday at the chapel.

LELIA L. WALLER

Lelia L. Waller, 90, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at the Monterey Park nursing home.

Mrs. Waller was born Aug. 3, 1907, in Hutchinson, Kan. She was a homemaker and member of the Eastgate Christian Church in Independence, where she lived most of her life. She waspreceded in death by her husband Harvey E. Waller, in 1975.

Her survivors include two sons, Cecil Waller, Wheatland, Mo., and Delbert Waller, Independence; one daughter, V. Jean Schmitz, Raytown; three sisters, Lucille Freeman, Wichita, Kan., Ester Smith and Jeannie Bass, both of Hutchinson, Kan.; three brothers, Kenneth Chitwood, Henderson, Colo., Vernon Chitwood, Commerce City, Colo., and Warren Snyder, Audubon, Iowa; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery in Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel.

WANDA E. WILLIAMS

Wanda E. Williams, 72, Clinton, Mi., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Macomb Hospital Center in Warren, Mich. Mrs. Williams was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Detroit. She worked for the Chrysler Corp. for 25 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, enjoyed needlework, the piano and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delma O. Williams, in 1996.

Her survivors include one daughter, Karen F. Reinke, Huntington Woods, Mi.; one brother, Elwood E. Smith, of Independence; one sister, Helen Crooker, of Oak Grove; two grandchildren, Christopher and Patrick; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, in Royal Oak, Mi. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, and 2 to 9 p.m., Sunday. Interment will be in Oakview cemetery in Royal Oak, Mi.

SYLVAN T. WILSON, III

Sylvan T. "Tom" Wilson, III, 71, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at his home. Mr. Wilson was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Malta Bend, Mo. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. In 1948, he joined Trans World Airlines as a flight engineer. He retired, as a captain, in 186. He owned and operated the Raytown Hobby Shop from 1961-1965. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Kansas City hangar of the "Quiet Birdmen." He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn L. Wilson, in 1979.

His survivors include his wife, Patricia S. Wilson; one sister, Louise Blosser, Elizabeth, Colo.; four sons, Tom Wilson, IV, Mike Wilson, Steve Wilson, and Jerry Wilson; three daughters, Bunny Tuttle, Diane Kennedy, and Janice Schwartz; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., today, at Floral Hills Chapel.

JAMES M. "JIM" ALLEN

Retired Army Sgt. James Manning "Jim" Allen, 59, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997, at the V.A. Medical Center.

Mr. Allen was born Nov. 21, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., and had lived in the Kansas City area most of his life. He had also lived in Europe for a total of 12 years. He entered military service in 1956, and during his career, he served two combat tours of duty in Vietnam during 1965 and 1969, and was an Army sergeant. He was awarded two Bronze Star medals, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with four battle stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Foreign Expeditionary Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and nine other military awards. He attended Northeast High School.

His survivors include two sons, Charles A. Allen, West Columbia, S.C., and Paul M. Allen, Independence; his mother, Dorothy L. Cox, and a sister, Carolyn S. Laster, both of Oak Grove; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove.

HANNAH L. CRABB

Hannah Louisa Crabb, 95, Odessa, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at The Groves, Independence.

Mrs. Crabb was born April 3, 1902, in Denby, N.D., and had lived in Sand Point, Ida., White Fish, Mont., Dunceith, N.D., Ramonia, N.D., Independence, Atherton, Kidder, Mo., Wetherby, Mo., Indianapolis, Ind., and Odessa. She was a mother and homemaker. She owned Pa`s Fix It Shop. She was a member of the Weaver Club, Odessa, and the Odessa Restoration Branch Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Thomas Crabb on May 2, 1975, a son, Dale Crabb in 1995, and a daughter, Rachel A. Mullins in 1992.

Her survivors include three sons, William T. Crabb, Kidder, John A. Crabb, Indianapolis, and Newton D. Crabb, Independence; three daughters, Myrtle Friend, Odessa, Juanita E. Bessmer, Blue Springs, and Clara Kopp, Bishop, Calif.; a brother, Ben Stowell, Sibley; two sisters, Ladica Friend, Bates City, and Nevada "Dolly" Grubb, Odessa; 27 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 41 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Odessa Restoration Branch. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa. The family suggests contributions to the church or to Odessa Nutrition Center.

MILDRED L. MANESS

Mildred Lucile Maness, 89, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center. Mrs. Maness was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Waverly, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was a 64-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 29 and the Social Order of Beauceant Assembly 150. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Roy W.E. Maness in 1981, a son, Roy Maness Jr., and a great-granddaughter.

Her survivors include three daughters, Nora Frances Hall, Butler, Mo., Judith Ann Frye, Independence, and Donna Lou Borchart, Blue Springs; a son, James R. Maness, Blue Springs; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or the Federation of the Blind.
