CHRISTINE A. SULLIVAN

Christine A. Sullivan, 85, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Sullivan was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Tina, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Emmett M. Sullivan in 1985.

Her survivors include two daughters, Patricia J. Mallory, Independence, and Marlene Gordon, Kansas City; six grandchildren, Dennis Mallory, Michael Gordon, Jerry Mallory, Karen Bushner, Patty Anderson and Kelly Peden; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Terrack Park Internment Chapel, Kansas City; cremation.

FLOSSIE F. TWEEDY

Flossie Fern Tweedy, 89, Buckner, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Truman Medical Center East.

Mrs. Tweedy was born Jan. 24, 1908, in Wier City, Kan., and moved to the Buckner/Independence area in the early 1930s. She was a member of the Buckner Restoration Church and was active in the Women`s Department and Quilting Group at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Tweedy in 1957, a daughter, Virginia McDaniel in 1989, and a grandson, Leon Tweedy in 1995.

Her survivors include two sons, Charles H. Tweedy Sr., Flemington, Mo., and Clifford L. Tweedy Sr., Buckner; a sister, Edith Tweedy, Sibley; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

RICKEY E. COLEMAN SR.

Rickey Eugene Coleman, Sr., 28, Kansas City, died Friday, July 25, 1997, at the Kansas University Medical Center.

Mr. Coleman was born Aug. 9, 1968, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. He was a truck driver for the Richardson Hauling Co. and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, L.C.M.S.

His survivors include his wife, Pennie L. Coleman, three sons, Rickey Eugene Coleman Jr., Ryan Timothy Coleman and Shawn Thomas Coleman, and one daughter, Charlotte Hailey Coleman, all of the home; his mother, Margaret Lucille Coleman, Independence; one sister, Florence Lawyer, Liberty, Mo.; and three brothers, Melvin Purdy, Kansas City, and Ronnie Coleman and Dennis Coleman, both of Independence.

Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Contributions are suggests to his wife and children.

DOROTHY I. CRAVENS

Dorothy Inez Cravens, 78, Independence, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at the Blue Springs Care Center.

Mrs. Cravens was born July 21, 1919, in Sibley and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James Marvin Cravens, died in 1974.

Graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

VADIA Y. GOYER

Vadia Yvonne Goyer, 75, Independence, died Friday, July 25, 1997. Mrs. Goyer was born in Nebraska City, Neb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Goyer.

Her survivors include two sons, Gary King, Independence, and Robert King, Plattsmouth, Neb.; one daughter, Sharon Schrier, Independence; one stepdaughter, Cathy Giovannin, Riverside, Calif.; one brother, Russell Babcock, LaGrange, Ky.; two sisters, Betty Schlotfield, Omaha, Neb., and Clara Williams, Lamar, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to Hospice Preferred Choice, 115 S. Main St., Liberty, Mo., 64068.

ETHEL K. KENDALL

Ethel K. Kendall, 92, Independence, died Monday, July 28, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Kendall was born Nov. 13, 1904, in Smallett, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She had been a telephone operator and a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was an active member of Maywood Baptist Church. Her husband, A.S. "Butch" Kendall, died in 1978.

Her survivors include one son, Bill Kendall Sr., Independence; three brothers, Vance Bunyard, Independence, Basil Bunyard, Kansas City, and Mark Bunyard, Chillicothe, Mo.; two sisters, Eula Brown, Atchison, Kan., and Chloe Woody, Independence; eight grandchildren, Bill Kendall Jr., Bob Kendall, Linda Viana, Mike Pemberton and Patrick Pemberton, all of Independence, Cynthia Fuller, Toronto, Canada, Jane Ralston, Rich Hill, Mo., and Denise Hosack, Blue Springs; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

M. TOM WILLIS

M. Tom Willis, 62, Concordia, Mo., formerly of this area, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at the Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo.

Mr. Willis was born Oct. 31, 1934, in Turner, Kan., and grew up in Olathe and Overland Park in Kansas. He worked for Allied-Signal Inc. in Kansas City for 35 years, retiring as an electrical engineering supervisor in 1992. He was a 1952 graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School and a graduate of the Aircraft and Mechanics School at Municipal Airport in Kansas City. He was an evangelist in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was active in the Holden (Mo.) congregation.

His survivors include his wife, Alberta "Bert" Douglas Willis of the home; one daughter, Debbie Dreeszen, Concordia; two sons, Mike Willis and Neal Willis, both of Liberty, Mo.; one sister, Louie Mae Steffens, Lenexa, Kan.; and 12 grandchildren. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Warrensburg RLDS Church, Jefferson and Mitchell streets. His body was donated to medical research at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Holden RLDS Church.

LOTTIE M. BALDUS

Lottie Mae Baldus, 80, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at the Jefferson Health Center.

Mrs. Baldus was born July 27, 1916, in Joplin, Mo., and had lived in Independence for the past 25 years. She was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation. Her husband of 60 years, Joseph E. Baldus Sr., died in 1994.

Her survivors include two sons, Joseph Baldus Jr., Lancaster, Calif., and Michael Baldus, Raymore, Mo.; a daughter, Carol Smith, Raymore; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer`s Association, 3846 W. 75th St., P.O. Box 8076, Prairie Village, Kan. 66208.

E. EMMA BRABY

E. Emma Braby, 93, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at the Rosewood Care Center. Mrs. Braby was born in Birmingham, England, and moved to Independence in 1910. She spent most of her adult life in various Iowa communities, including Tracy, Menlo, Jefferson, Ames, Mason City and Des Moines. She returned to Independence in 1976. She taught music and elementary school in Iowa. She was a 1922 graduate of William Chrisman High School and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, the Mother`s Club at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and had been a volunteer at the hospital for many years. She was a charter member of the Independence Music Club (1920), and in her younger years, she was an accomplished violinist and frequently played in recitals on radio and at many church functions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hugh Braby. Her survivors include two sons, Howard Braby, Independence, and Richard Braby, Franklin, N.C.; a sister, May Ashcraft, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, William Howard Snead, Springfield, Mo., and Edwin Snead, Longview, Wash.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Mound Grove cemetery. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Outreach International, P.O. Box 210, Independence, Mo. 64051.

CHARLES E. BRANSON

Charles E. Branson, 70, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mr. Branson was born April 14, 1926, in Maryville, Mo., moving to Independence in 1946. He was a self-employed carpenter in the Independence area. He was a member of the Praise Tabernacle Church in Independence and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Coffelt in 1993. His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margie Branson of the home; two daughters, Betty Steinmeyer, Sugar Creek, and Diane Spitler, Clinton, Mo.; a brother, Ted Branson, Warsaw, Mo.; a sister, Pearl Hamilton, Independence; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, 900 Bly Road. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at New Salem Funeral Home.

MARC W. DOMVILLE

Marc William Domville, 38, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital.

Mr. Domville was born March 7, 1958, in Kansas City. He was a 1976 graduate of Truman High School. He was an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 228 in Independence and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

His survivors include his parents, Patrick and Patricia Domville of the home; two brothers, Matthew Domville of the home, and Michael Domville, Roach, Mo.; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Townley, Oak Grove; nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Newcomer`s Blue Springs Chapel. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. His body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for Diabetic Research. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.

VIRGINIA DRAKE

Virginia Drake, 91, Oak Grove, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Drake was born in 1905 in Kiowa, Colo., and lived in this area before moving to San Antonio, Texas, in 1969. She returned to this area in January 1997. She was a seamstress for the Lee Mendel Co. in Kansas City for 13 years, retiring in 1969. She was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Drake in 1963, and two sons, Donald in 1933 and Wayne in 1984.

Her survivors include three sons, Thomas Lee Drake, Broken Arrow, Okla., James Michael Drake, San Antonio, and Edward Drake, Independence; three daughters, Betty Jean Willey, Shallowater, Texas, Mary Virginia Hearn, Donna, Texas, and Muriel Titus, Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Dr. Francis James, Cerritos, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Lawn cemetery, Emporia, Kan. Arrangements are under the direction of Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.

JUANITA J. GRINER

Juanita J. Griner, 85, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Griner was born April 22, 1911, in Stewartsville, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Van Nuys, Calif., moving to Independence four years ago. She was an accounting clerk for the May Co. in California for 20 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Griner in 1971, and two sons, Richard Paul Griner in 1952 and David Griner Sr. in 1992.

Her survivors include a son, Ronald Griner, Lee`s Summit; two grandsons, David Griner Jr., Blue Springs, and Tim Griner, Lee`s Summit; and two great-granddaughters, Stephanie Griner and Rachel Griner.

Services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

JEAN L. HURSHMAN

Jean Lenore Hurshman, 66, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Hurshman was born July 8, 1930, in Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa, and lived in Independence, Columbus, Ohio, Anchorage, Alaska, Portland, Ore., and Guatemala, Central America, before returning to Independence 19 years ago. She was public relations director of the Anchorage Community Choir from 1964 to 1967, for Park College, Parkville, Mo., from 1968 to 1978, and Outreach International in Independence from 1991 to 1994. She was a volunteer assistant chaplain at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center from 1992 to 1994 and pastor at the Sterling Avenue RLDS congregation. Her daughter, Linda Kay Thatcher, died in 1989.

Her survivors include her husband, Lloyd B. Hurshman, Independence; two daughters, Becky L. Savage, Tampa, Fla., and Lu Rene Tyree, Lee`s Summit; a son, Al Bruce Hurshman, and her mother, Mary Gwen Amsberry, both of Independence; two sisters, Lou Phelps, Independence, and Gwenyth Cordova, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the RLDS Stone Church; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at her home, 403 W. Walnut St. The family suggests contributions in her name to Outreach International, P.O. Box 210, Independence, Mo. 64051, or the Keith Worthington Chapter, ALS Association, 8340 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan. 66206.

KEN L. SEE

Ken Lloyd See, 49, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at his home.

Mr. See was born March 4, 1947, in Kansas City, and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked in the marketing department of Culinary Concepts Ltd. He attended Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, was in the restaurant business there, and later worked at Westin Crown Center and Adam`s Mark. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Independence.

His survivors include his companion, J.B. Greer; his parents, Don and Beverly See, Independence; three brothers, Leslie See, Parkville, Mo., Bradley See, Independence, and Jeffery See, Blue Springs; two nieces; and three nephews.

Memorial services were today at the McGilley Midtown Chapel, Kansas City; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the Good Samaritan Project.

HELEN VAN EATON

Helen Van Eaton, 73, Butler, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Van Eaton was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Bates County, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 15 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her children, Rickie Van Eaton and Dyann Van Eaton.

Her survivors include two brothers, J.B. Smith, Kansas City, and Johnnie Smith, Independence; and a sister, Richard Swehla, Butler.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Underwood-Steinbeck Funeral Home, Butler. Burial will be in Crescent Hill cemetery, Adrian, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Bates County Senior Center.

FLO D. WILLIAMSON

Flo Dimple Williamson, 86, Grandview, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1996, at Grandview Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Williamson was born July 22, 1910, in Collins, Mo., and lived in Independence for 63 years before moving to Grandview 44 years ago. She worked in food service for the Kansas City School District for 12 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Maywood Baptist Church. Her husband, Vivian Williamson, died in 1992.

Her survivors include a daughter, Jane Pierce, Blue Springs; a sister, Julia Phipps, Shawnee, Kan.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be 9:30a.m. Friday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Girl Scouts of America.
