MARY M. WHITESIDE

Mary M. Whiteside, 86, Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Whiteside was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Wakenda, Mo., and had lived in Blue Springs for 20 years. She had been the manager of Osco Drug Co., and she and her husband owned the Blue Ridge Cafe for 20 years. She was of the Methodist faith. Her husband, George P. Whiteside Sr., died in 1984.

Her survivors include two daughters, Margaret Ann Bicknell, Blue Springs, and Mary R. Owen, Bates City; one son, George P. Whiteside, Lee's Summit; four sisters, Geraldine Hogue, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Alice Barker, Raytown, Anna Lou Lewis, Independence, and Joe Helen Barnett, Torrence, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

RICHARD T. HALE

Richard Thomas Hale, 59, Amsterdam, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Hale was born in Independence and had lived in LaCygne, Kan., before moving to Amsterdam in 1992. He attended Fairmount Grade School and graduated in 1957 from VanHorn High School. He had worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad before working as a foreman for Kansas City Power and Light at the LaCygne Station.

His survivors include his wife, Leona Hale of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard T. and Shirley Hale, Ottawa, Kan., and Adam A. Hale, Amsterdam; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Raymond Beckman, Garnett, Kan.; his parents, Garlon and Mayvella Hale, Independence; a brother, Phillip Martin Hale, Lee's Summit; a sister, Faye Arlene Denman, Grain Valley; four grandchildren, Justin Ray Beckman, Garrett Richard Beckman, Haley Lynn Beckman and Abby Lynn Hale.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, Mo. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hale cemetery, Oak Grove, Ark. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JOHN C. KEELING

John Calvin Keeling, 72, Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of the

Kansas City area, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Kansas City. A 1996 graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary, he pastored Church of the Brethren congregations in Tucson, Ariz., Bakersfield, Hutchinson, Kan., and Empire, Calif., for more than 30 years. Before entering the ministry, he was a carpenter in Kansas City for 13 years. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Wesley Keeling in 1969.

His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Thelma Louise Keeling, Bakersfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin Montgomery "Monty" and Christine Keeling, Goshen, Ind., and John Richard and Janelle Keeling, Bakersfield; three sisters, Catherine Guyer, Beulah Norton and Elizabeth Baysinger, all of Independence; and grandchildren, Christel Gross, Erica Keeling, Nathan Keeling, Matthew Keeling, Katherine Keeling, Richard Keeling and Elizabeth Keeling.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Messiah Church of the Brethren, 1925 Hardesty, Kansas City. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia Society or the Church of the Brethren.

DAVID B. SHERPY

David B. Sherpy, 74, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Sherpy was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Nevada, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence before moving to Oak Grove nine years ago. He was a route supervisor for Bitterman and Son for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the National Secretary of SeBright Poultry Club of America. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Louise Sherpy in 1975 and Deborah Ruth Becker in 1985.

His survivors include his wife, Rosalie Sherpy, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roy B. Sherpy and David and Karen Christian, all of Oak Grove; a brother, Henry H. Sherpy, Wichita, Kan.; and three sisters, Mary Belle Little, Overland Park, Kan., Della Park, Westminister, Colo., and Margaret Sealy, Moberly, Mo.

Services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

FRIEDA L. GATES

Frieda Louise Gates of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Research Hospital.

Mrs. Gates was born in Kansas City, Kan., and moved to Independence 30 years ago. She was a bank secretary for 10 years, and prior to that, she had been an insurance agent. She retired in 1975. She was a member of Noland Road Baptist Church and Mount Washington Chapter 423 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by two sons, Howard Faerber and Dr. H. Jack Faerber.

Her survivors include one son, Kenneth C. Faerber, Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Dorothy Louise Smith, Battle Creek, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Private burial will be in Highland Park cemetery, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Noland Road Baptist Church, 4505 S. Noland Road, Independence, Mo. 64055.

VINCENT MOREELS

Vincent Moreels, 81, Independence, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Moreels was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Wettern, Belgium. He was a member of Brickmason Union Local No. 4, Kansas City, Mo., and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Louise Moreels of the home, a brother and sister-in-law, Lucian and Dora Moreels, Independence, Mo; three brothers and two sisters, who live in Belgium.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Support Center or the Alzheimer's Association.

THELMA "FAYE" WEBB

Thelma "Faye" Webb, 86, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Webb was born April 27, 1912, in Bismarck, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 47 years. She was an electronics assembler for Bendix Corp. for 23 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Webb Sr., on Aug. 10, 1988.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Doris and Lloyd M. Webb Jr., Independence; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marion S. and Charles Sherrer, Lafayette, Calif., Jane E. and John Robertson, Independence, and Darlene F. and Joe McNeil, Kenner, La.; two brothers, Dr. Lloyd Chance and Dr. Oscar Chance, both of Kansas City; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Heart of America Hospice, 155 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. 66102

M. VERNON "VERN" BENDET

M. Vernon "Vern" Bendet, 75, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Bendet was born July 26, 1923, in Newark, N.J., and lived in Newark until moving to Independence in 1947. He was a purchasing agent at Mid-American Bank, retiring in 1987. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a member and past president of The Declarations of Independence Community Chorus, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Post 21, American Legion Honor Guard, McDonald Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.

His survivors include his wife, Vernita Bendet of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Judith Bendet, and two grandchildren, Christopher and Jonathan Bendet, all of Omaha, Neb.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or the Declarations of Independence Community Chorus.

Peter D. Arvanitakis

Peter D. Arvanitakis, 56, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Nevada, Mo.Mr. Arvanitakis was born in Kansas City. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Kansas City.

His survivors include his sister, Sylvia Soulis and her husband, Dennis; two nephews, Dennis Soulis Jr. and John Soulis, all of Independence; and his aunt, Elizabeth Bunch, Carson, Calif.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Kansas City. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel, Interstate 435 and Holmes Road. A Trisagion Service will be at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the church, 12001 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo. 64145.

ANTHONY "GENE" MAYHUGH

Anthony "Gene" Mayhugh, 75, Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Mayhugh was born May 15, 1923, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a machinist for several companies in the Kansas City area, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marilyn Dolores Mayhugh of the home; two sons, James E. Mayhugh, Raytown, and John A. Mayhugh, Independence; one daughter, Debra M. Breeland, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

KENNETH L. JOHNSON

Kenneth Lee Johnson of Kansas City, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999.

Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Kansas City. He served on the LCT 465 during World War II from May 1944 until he was discharged February 1946. He was a self-employed carpenter and a member of the carpenters union in Kansas City. He was also a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Independence.

His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Edie Johnson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Aubrey Keeling, Independence; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth "Buz" and Sue Johnson, Moberly, Mo.; one sister, Jean Allen, Raytown; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were today at the church, 19901 E. Missouri 78. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family suggests contributions to the building fund at Eastside Baptist Church, 19901 E. Missouri 78, Independence, Mo. 64057. Arrangements are under the direction of Charter Funerals/ Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City.

FLORA O'DELL

Flora O'Dell, 91, Independence, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at Truman Medical Center-East.

Mrs. O'Dell was born Dec. 11, 1907, in Aullville, Mo., and had lived in Independence for more than 70 years. She was a member of the Carlisle Baptist Church, and taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton O'Dell, and a daughter, Rena Roberts in 1998.

Her survivors include one daughter, Virginia Scanlan, Independence; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, John Holtcamp, Higginsville, Mo.; and one sister, Elsie Woodward, Raytown.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Concordia Baptist cemetery, Concordia, Mo. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Carlisle Baptist Church.

RUTH E. BEATTY

Ruth Evelyn Beatty, 50, Independence, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, Kansas City.

Mrs. Beatty was born April 13, 1948, in Paris, Mo., and had lived in Blue Springs from 1975 until moving to Independence nine years ago. She was manager of the Crackerneck Golf Club for 13 years. She had also been a cook for the Rockwood Golf Club for three years and had also worked for Sunfresh bakery for a year. She was a member of the American Legion Women`s Auxiliary Post 499, Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary D. Beatty in 1973.

Her survivors include two sons, Scott Beatty, Kansas City, and Gary Beatty, Independence; three daughters, Crystal Fox, Blue Springs, and Misty Beatty and Katrina Beatty, both of Independence; a sister, Evelyn Hurshman, Blue Springs; and eight grandchildren.

No services. There will be a family wake in Kansas City. The body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

RUTH A. CURTIS

Ruth Aralein Curtis, 86, Lee`s Summit, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee`s Summit.

Mrs. Curtis was born in Astoria, Ore., and lived in Oregon City before moving to this area in 1991. She worked for United Grocers Inc. in Milwaukie, Ore., for 27 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Congregationalist Church and served in several volunteer civilian organizations during World War II.

Her survivors include her husband, George Curtis, Lee`s Summit; one son, George Harry Curtis, Blue Springs; one brother, Gerald A. Coates, Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

Inurnment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence.

DONALD E. JOHNSON

Donald E. Johnson, 65, Edwards, Mo., died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Boone County Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Independence, and moved to the Cable Ridge community of Edwards in 1971. He graduated from Blue Springs High School, received a bachelor`s degree from Ottawa (Kan.) University, and a master`s degree in education from

Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. He had taught school in several locations in Missouri and was currently the director of guidance at the Climax Springs (Mo.) R-4 School District.

His survivors include his wife, Margot DeAnn Rodgers Johnson of the home; two sons, Donald A. Johnson, Independence, and Duane A. Johnson, Kansas City; one daughter, Cynthia Tong, Louisiana; one stepdaughter, Margot J. Welch, Grain Valley; his mother, Mildred Johnson, Warsaw, Mo.; one brother, Duane Johnson, Edwards; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Cable Ridge cemetery, Edwards. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

BERNARD S. OSTROFF

Bernard S. Ostroff, 52, Blue Springs, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, in Blue Springs.

Mr. Ostroff was born July 6, 1946. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Ostroff on May 10, 1998.

His survivors include his son, Glen Ostroff; two sisters, Michelle Ostroff and Jacqueline Horowitz; a niece and nephew, Rachel and Robert, and many friends.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview cemetery, 12100 East 13th, Wichita, Kan. The family requests contributions to ICAN, 14300 East 32nd, Independence, Kan. 64055.
